Football Roster Loses Players

Jeff White over at VirginiaSports.com caught up with Mike London for an article at the end of last week. Unfortunately, some bad news came out in the story. Five players are no longer with the team at this time - Javaris Brown, Lamar Milstead, Tory Allen-Ford, Quintin Hunter and Javanti Sparrow are no longer on the roster for various reasons. Keith Payne, Raynard Horne and Darnell Carter are still on the fence as well.

On the good news side of things, Trey Womack and Mike Parker both have done what was needed to earn a spot on the roster as fifth-year seniors. Also, two walk-ons have been given scholarships - juniors Robert Randolph and Matt Snyder.

White also sat down with coach Tony Bennett to check in on the men's basketball program. Bennett talked about the importance of the players on the upcoming season's roster:

"Everybody who's here is extremely important," Bennett said. "This is the foundation. The guys who returned are here because they want to be here, and they want to be part of building this, and then certainly the [first-year players] who chose Virginia are here because they have a strong desire to be part of this turnaround. It's an important class for the future of Virginia basketball."

And if you still want to read more about the Cavaliers' six incoming basketball recruits, make sure to check out The Daily Progress, which is running a week-long series on the players. The articles started Sunday with three stories on the Hoos. You can read that trio of articles and keep up throughout the week on Sabre NewsLink!

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

TheSabre.com was at the NBPA Top 100 Camp this past week and we'll have much more coverage this week, including analysis and recruiting updates. I'll have updates posted on a pair of 2012 point guards, North Carolina product Tyler Lewis and Marcus Paige out of Iowa. I'll also have more on North Mecklenburg (N.C.) 2011 forward Bernard Sullivan, who enjoyed a terrific week last week. He attended Virginia's Elite Camp last Monday and Tuesday as well. No offer has come from Virginia at this point, but one could be close. Stay tuned for more on the 6-8, 215-pound prospect.

In case you missed it, Kris Wright posted an excellent report on Wisconsin SF Paul Jesperson last Friday. Jesperson, a 6-7, 185-pound rising senior, earned an offer on the second day of Virginia's Elite Camp. He participated in the NBPA Top 100 Camp as well and performed well.

The way the Virginia football program is accumulating commitments, head coach Mike London and company may be finished with its class by the summer. I'm kidding, of course, but Virginia is certainly on a roll, having scored six commitments in the month of June.

The latest prospect to verbal to UVa's 2011 class is 6-2, 205-pound Kevin Green, a quarterback/linebacker out of Petersburg High School (VA). Green is listed as an "athlete" because he has potential to play a number of different positions on the next level, including quarterback, wide receiver, safety or perhaps even linebacker depending on how he develops physically.

I hope to have more on Green this week. I hope to have more on the following prospects as well…

Rob Burns - The 6-7, 230-pound defensive end/tight end prospect was in Charlottesville on Saturday, participating with teammates in Virginia's 7-on-7 tournament. Burns has reportedly narrowed his list to four schools - Boston College, Penn State, Stanford and Virginia. I hope to reach the Stone Bridge (Ashburn, VA) rising senior for more on his recruitment this week.

Michael Cole - Cole, a 6-2, 200-pound weak-side linebacker prospect out of Cave Spring (Roanoke, VA), plans to camp at Penn State this weekend. Cole likely will make a college decision soon after the Penn State camp. Right now, he is considering offers from Duke, Maryland, Virginia and Virginia Tech. He had a great experience at UVa's one-day camp on June 12, so Mike London's program is right there at the top for the talented prospect.

Curtis Grant - TheSabre.com's No. 1 overall recruit in the state of Virginia's 2011 class, 6-3, 220-pound linebacker Curtis Grant was in Charlottesville with Hermitage (Richmond, VA) teammates for the 7-on-7 tournament. Grant doesn't plan on deciding soon, but he has now been on grounds twice this month. Like Burns, Grant attended Virginia's Blue Chip Recruiting Day.

Corey Marshall - Dinwiddie's (VA) star defensive lineman performed at Virginia's Big Man Camp on Saturday. He likely will make a decision soon and is considering offers from Michigan, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech and West Virginia. Virginia Tech remains the team to beat for Marshall, but UVa d-line coach Jeff Hanson worked closely with the 6-1, 255-pound prospect on Saturday.

Brandon Phelps - Phelps, whose parents both attended UVa, is a 6-0, 170-pound cornerback/wide receiver prospect out of Damascus (MD). The rising senior is considering a large number of offers, including Alabama, Penn State and Virginia. He plans to visit UVa this Friday and we'll have more on the visit over the weekend.

Also, check out a feature profile on 6-6, 200-pound QB/ATH Tanner McEvoy, a standout rising senior out of Bergen Catholic (Oradell, N.J.). McEvoy played wide receiver last season as a junior but is going to be Bergen's quarterback this upcoming season. Virginia is one of his many offers.

Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Caleb Taylor Discusses Commitment And More
Image: Caleb TaylorLast Saturday, Phoebus (Hampton, VA) star Caleb Taylor became the thirteenth rising high school senior to commit to the University of Virginia. Taylor, a 6-0, 230-pound linebacker, took some time to discuss the decision he made less than a week ago.

In-State Athlete Commits To Virginia
Virginia football keeps on reeling in the commitments in the 2011 class. Today, Petersburg (VA) athlete Kevin Green became commitment number 14 for UVa, which has secured six commitments this month alone.

The Latest With Marshall Plumlee
Image: Marshall Plumlee6-11, 215-pound rising senior Marshall Plumlee is in Charlottesville for the NBPA Top 100 Camp. TheSabre.com caught up with the Christ School (Arden, N.C.) standout, who has been pleased with the way his game has developed this spring.

This Week In Recruiting - Womack to decide early?
By Chris Horne

Another Virginia recruit who may decide soon is Trey Womack, a 6-1, 175-pound speedster out of Malvern Prep in Malvern, Pennsylvania.

Womack, who is being recruited primarily as a cornerback, is anxious to talk to several coaches in September and take a few official visits, but seemed very high on Virginia. He wants to take official visits to Nebraska for sure and possibly Michigan State. He has been to Virginia several times and feels he knows enough about the program and the school to make a decision, but wants to check out several other programs first.

Other notes

Highland Springs linebacker Jarrell Miller is down to 12. Miller, who very likely is one of the top targets on Virginia's list, has included the Cavs on his final list.

Forestville (MD) offensive lineman Antonio Logan-El will take an official visit to Virginia. He will also officially visit Oklahoma this weekend, as well as Penn State, Tennessee and Florida. Maryland still leads for the 5-star recruit, who feels he has been to Maryland enough times already.

JHoo's Summer Reading 2010: Tight Ends
Image: Joe TorchiaFirst up, the quarterbacks. Next, the running backs. Next ... let's jump to the tight ends. Why jump ahead to the tight ends? Because I really want to talk about the tight ends. Why? Because I do not think we are far away from the days when we again can talk about the tight ends as an important part of the UVa offense. Let's take a look in the latest chapter of Summer Reading.

Sooners End Cavaliers' Season
Image: Branden KlineThe scoreboard said it all - 11 runs and three Virginia errors. For the second consecutive day the Sooners pounded Cavalier pitching and Oklahoma's aggressive offense pressured the Hoos into defensive miscues and pitching mistakes that extended innings and led to add-on runs. In the end, OU claimed an 11-0 series finale win.

Frustrating Finale For Sweet Season
Image: Tyler CannonMonday night's heart-wrenching loss was not a nightmare. Well, it was, but not the kind you wake up from relieved it isn't real. So even though no one saw it coming, Oklahoma's dominating 11-0 victory did happen and it left a sour aftertaste following an otherwise sweet season for the Virginia baseball team.
