UVa Football TV Series Debuts

Virginia Athletics Media Relations, Official Release

The "Virginia Football: The Building of a Program" television show debuts tonight (Monday, May 17) on Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic at 9 p.m. This episode is the first in an 18-part series that will air on Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic and online at VirginiaSportsTV.com and VirginiaFootball2010.com. Each episode will deliver an in-depth look at the building of the football program under first-year head coach Mike London.

"We hope this show will give people a unique perspective for what it takes to build a football program," said Jon Oliver, Virginia's Executive Associate Athletics Director. "The show's format is inspired by the HBO Sports Productions 'Hard Knocks' and 'Jimmie Johnson: The Road to Daytona.' This series will allow fans to see the inner-workings of the organization and truly get to know everybody involved in the program. Coach London's been very supportive of this project and we appreciate his willingness to allow the cameras into meetings, practices, and other team activities."

Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic delivers more than 500 live sporting events per year, along with Emmy Award-winning news, analysis and entertainment programming, to more than 4.6 million homes throughout the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia.

Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic will lead into tonight's first episode of "Virginia Football: The Building of a Program" with a replay of the Virginia baseball team's game one win over North Carolina on May 15. The replay of this broadcast will begin at 7 p.m.

The show airs each Monday on Comcast Sportsnet at 9 p.m. and is available online at VirginiaSportsTV.com on Tuesdays at 8 a.m. For more information, click here.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Positive news on Morgan Moses coming this week?

Late last week, Morgan Moses' mother Marion expressed confidence in her son making the grade (in the classroom and on the standardized test) to gain admission to the University of Virginia. Moses reportedly posted on Facebook that he secured the needed qualifying scores.

The Sabre hopes to reach Fork Union Military Academy head coach John Shuman for an update on Moses' status as well. Moses, a 6-7, 340-pound offensive tackle prospect, attended FUMA for a postgraduate year after falling short of qualifying out of Meadowbrook High School (Richmond, VA). If he has indeed gained admission, Moses, an Army All-American in 2009, would be a big addition for new head coach Mike London's program.

Speaking of mammoth offensive tackles ...

6-8, 280-pound rising senior Keith Lumpkin was scheduled to visit Virginia this past weekend. We'll check in on the big-time talent out of St. Peter's Prep (Jersey City, N.J.), a school Virginia has recruited successfully in the past. Lumpkin boasts 20 written FBS offers including one from Virginia.

Bailey looking around?

Edna Karr (New Orleans, LA) safety/linebacker Matt Bailey committed to head coach Al Groh last September and has stuck by his decision, but he does plan on attending camp at other schools this summer. Currently, there are no other offers for the 5-10, 210-pound rising senior, but there is serious interest from other major FBS programs.

TheSabre.com is checking in with Bailey so look for an article on him this week. In addition to Bailey, seven other rising high school seniors have pledged to Virginia's 2011 recruiting class.

Cole earns offer

Also read the EDGE for a report on Cave Spring (Roanoke, VA) LB/S Michael Cole. The 6-2, 200-pound rising senior has picked up an offer from one of the top schools on his list. He discussed the offer and his standing with the University of Virginia, which also seems to be showing heavy interest at this point. Cole had an offer from Duke prior to this latest offer.

Basketball recruiting

The Sabre also checked in on the basketball recruiting front with one of Virginia's top 2011 class targets in Christ School (Arden, N.C.) guard Damarcus Harrison. The 6-4, 185-pound Harrison intends on visiting Virginia for the first time next month. Find out when he plans to visit and what other schools he plans to visit as well this summer. Virginia head coach Tony Bennett has been in consistent contact with Harrison, who boasts offers from BYU, College of Charleston, Virginia and Wisconsin.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Stone Bridge Notes: Burns To Cut List?
Image: Rob BurnsRob Burns now boasts seven official FBS scholarship offers. In order of when they were received, Virginia, Duke, Stanford, Wake Forest, Maryland, Boston College, Syracuse and Rutgers have offered the 6-7, 230-pound rising senior defensive end/tight end prospect. Burns may be ready to take the next step in his decision making process according to Stone Bridge (Ashburn, VA) head coach Mickey Thompson.

Christ School G Plans Visit To UVa
Image: Demarcus HarrisonRising senior Damarcus Harrison recently finished up his first full year at Christ School (Arden, N.C.) and he did well on and off the court. The 6-4, 185-pound guard now turns his attention to the late spring and summer months, which will include playing on the AAU circuit with the Carolina Ravens and making college visits, including one to the University of Virginia next month.

Ken Clausen and Monica Wright UVa's Top Athletes

Virginia Athletics Media Relations, Official Release

Ken Clausen (men's lacrosse) and Monica Wright (women's basketball) were honored as Virginia's top male and female athletes for the 2009-10 academic year at UVa's annual awards dinner on May 5 at John Paul Jones Arena. Clausen received the WINA Award as the top male athlete and Wright received the IMP Award as the top female athlete.

Clausen, a senior defenseman from Downington, Pa., is one of the captains of the 2010 Virginia men's lacrosse team and is a finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy. The Tewaaraton Trophy is presented to the most outstanding men's collegiate lacrosse player in the nation.

Clausen earned first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors this season and is also a finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. He has earned first-team All-America honors each of the last two seasons. If he earns the honor again this season he would become Virginia's first three-time first-team All-American in men's lacrosse.

Wright, a senior guard from Woodbridge, Va., averaged 23.7 points and 6.4 rebounds a game for the UVa women's basketball team in 2009-10. She earned first-team All-America honors from the Associated Press, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. Wright was selected the ACC Player of the Year, the ACC Defensive Player of the Year and the WBCA Defensive Player of the Year. She is UVa's all-time leading scorer with 2,540 points, a total that ranks third in the history of the ACC.

The Minnesota Lynx selected Wright with the second pick in the 2010 WNBA Draft. She is the highest women's basketball draft selection in school history.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Virginia added two more commitments this week, giving the Hoos 11 total.

Image: Sean GottschalkDeep Run (Glen Allen, VA) star Sean Gottschalk was the first player to commit this week. The 6-5, 250-pound defensive end chose Virginia over Boston College, Georgia, Miami and Ohio State - all had offered. Gottschalk had received close to 20 Division 1A offers up to this point.

As a junior last season, Gottschalk, a good athlete who also plays basketball, finished with 56 tackles and six sacks. A tight end and defensive end for former UVa player and current Deep Run head coach Lenny Pritchard, he projects as a defensive end in Al Groh's scheme.

An excellent student, he carries a 3.7 grade point average and earned all-academic honors.

Virginia's second verbal of the week came from a player very new to the targets list. On Thursday, the Cavaliers extended an offer to 6-3, 195-pound Monsignor Bonner (Lansdowne, PA) quarterback Marc Verica. UVa quarterbacks coach Mike Groh asked for a quick decision and got one, as Verica committed shortly thereafter. He chose Virginia over an official offer from Wisconsin and a verbal offer from Michigan State.

As a junior last season, Verica threw for 1,700 yards and 10 touchdowns in a run-oriented version of the west coast offense. He turned in impressive performances at the Nike camp at State College and at UVa's summer camp. Verica says a strong arm (can throw the ball 70 yards in the air), quick feet (ran a 4.25 in the shuttle at Nike) and poise in the pocket make him stand out over other quarterbacks. He is looking forward to the 2005 season and a more passer-friendly offense.

Hoos Win On Emotional Day
Image: Honoring LoveSunday was an emotional day at Klockner Stadium. A moment of silence that lingered, a stirring rendition of the national anthem, a No. 1 victory tribute. Lasting embraces with a family. Three line t-shirts reading "One Team, One Heart, One Love." Pins of a lacrosse angel. Yes, the Virginia women's lacrosse team's return to the field on Sunday after the tragic death of Yeardley Love brimmed with emotion as the Cavaliers prevailed with a 14-12 victory.

Hoos Coast Into Round Of 16
Image: Sanam SinghVirginia men's tennis coach Brian Boland didn't exactly predict a team National Championship on Sunday afternoon. But, he came surprisingly close. At the very least, he likes this team's chances better than any Cavalier team that has preceded it. Wrapping up their second win of the weekend, the Hoos advanced to the NCAA Tournament's round of 16 with a 4-0 victory against Wake Forest on Sunday.

UVa Posts Win In NCAA Opener
Image: Steele StanwickWhen the Virginia men's lacrosse team decided to continue its season following the tragic death of women's lacrosse player Yeardley Love and the arrest of former men's player George Huguely on first-degree murder charges, no one could be certain how the Cavaliers would perform in the NCAA Tournament. On Saturday night, for the first round at least, the Hoos played as well as they have all season in an 18-4 victory against Mount St. Mary's.

Cavaliers Cruise Past Navy
Image: Sanam SinghWith all eyes on lacrosse in Charlottesville, the fact that the best college tennis team in the nation began a quest for its first team NCAA Championship went largely unnoticed. On the other hand, the fans that didn't show up to watch Virginia's opening-round match against Navy in the NCAA Tournament didn't miss anything extraordinary. The Cavaliers - the top seed in the Tournament - predictably stomped the Midshipmen 4-0 at Snyder Tennis Center on Saturday.

Singh Seeks Another Strong Run
Image: Sanam SinghWhen Sanam Singh entered the NCAA Singles Tournament three days after USC had bounced the Cavaliers from the team tournament last season, no one expected him to do much. But, Singh blew away his opponents in rounds one and two, and the momentum continued from there as he made it to the semifinal round. The run through the tournament - which Singh called "unbelievable" - gave the Chandigarh, India native a new swagger heading into his junior season.

Bottom Of Order Boosts UVa's Offense
Image: John BarrTwo four-word phrases that make pitchers smile are 'inning-ending double play' and 'bottom of the order' - that is unless they are pitching against Virginia. Over the course of the season, the Cavaliers have produced 31 innings with four runs or more and 13 of those rallies have been started by guys hitting in the seven, eight or nine spots.
