Memorial Fund Established to Honor Yeardley Love
The Virginia Lacrosse Alumni Network has set up the Yeardley Love Women's Lacrosse Scholarship Fund through the school's Virginia Athletics Foundation. The goal for the VLAN fund is at least $500,000, which would fully endow one scholarship per year on a continuing basis, said Lo Davis, assistant director of the Virginia Athletics Foundation. Within three hours of being announced, he said the fund received donations and pledges reaching into six figures. "It goes to show that people really care and want to make a positive out of such a tragic event," he said. Most of the pledges, he said, are in the range of about $1,000. Drew Fox, a lacrosse player who graduated U.Va. in 1993, said the quick response shows the closeness of the Virginia lacrosse family, and its desire to do something for Love's family carrying into the future. Former players going back to the 1950s have called to make donations, he said. "It's significant for the family because all they want is a legacy for their beautiful, sweet daughter to go on forever, and that's what we're trying to do here," Fox said. The scholarship will be awarded each year to a deserving young female student-athlete within the University of Virginia women's lacrosse program. The scholarship will be funded in perpetuity once the initial sum is secured.

This Week In Recruiting The University of Virginia football program boasts eight high school junior commits for the 2011 class. Touted running back Clifton Richardson is not a solid commitment, but he continues to call himself a "soft" commit to the Cavaliers. The 6-1, 195-pound Menchville (Newport News, VA) star's recruitment likely won't "officially" be over until the fall or winter (he hopes to make official visits), but he remains high on the Hoos. "Nothing has changed," Richardson said. "I still love UVa. I like the future I'd have there. Mike London and the coaches are great." The University of Florida is certainly competition to watch. Richardson has not yet been offered by the Gators, but a Gators assistant has stopped by Menchville in the Evaluation Period. Florida could be close to offering and Richardson is considering attending camp in Gainesville this summer. For more from Richardson, check out the EDGE article I'll post this week. Also be sure to check out the EDGE for an article on top defensive end target Marco Jones. The 6-3, 250-pound rising senior attends Boys Latin School in Baltimore, Maryland, and is becoming a highly recruited prospect. "He has great stamina for a kid his size," said Latin head football coach Ritchie Schell, who played Jones at offensive tackle and defensive end last season. The team finished with a 10-1 record. "He doesn't let the fact that gets double and triple teamed frustrate him. For a kid his size, the way he changes direction is amazing. His initial 10 or 15 yards is really quick. He always finishes blocks. He tracks guys down from one sideline to the next. He understands the game and he's very coachable." Virginia is one of 11 schools to offer Jones, who visited Charlottesville this year. According to Schell, Virginia is high on Jones' list. Coach London is showing interest in another Boys Latin rising senior as well. 5-11, 190-pound cornerback/wide receiver Michael Turner, still looking for his first offer, has been invited to camp at UVa, Duke and Northwestern. We'll have more on him as well this week.
On the basketball front, I plan to check back with St. Peter's Prep (Jersey City, N.J.) head coach Mike Kelly this week for the latest on 6-7 senior forward Ronald Roberts. Roberts made an official visit to UVa the previous weekend, so we'll find out what is next for the athletic prospect.

NCAA Tournament Hosts Several UVa teams are hosting NCAA Tournament games this weekend. The men's and women's lacrosse teams, who both elected to continue their seasons after the tragic death of Yeardley Love, will host their opening round games on Saturday and Sunday. The men's team faces Mount St. Mary's on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. in a game that will be televised by ESPNU. The Hoos defeated the Mount on the road earlier this season, 15-7. The women's team plays on Sunday when it welcomes Towson to Charlottesville for a game at either noon or 1 p.m. The men's and women's tennis teams, meanwhile, host first-round NCAA action on Friday and Saturday. The women's team kicks the weekend off with a 2 p.m. match Friday against Princeton. The Hoos are hosting an NCAA match for the first time in program history. If the Cavaliers defeat the Tigers, they will face the Duke-Long Island winner on Saturday at 4 p.m. The men's team hosts Navy on Saturday at 1 p.m. If the Cavs prevail, they will take on the Wake Forest-Columbia winner on Sunday at 1 p.m. Stay tuned to The Sabre to follow all the action!

Issue No. 357 - Sept. 1, 2008
Renovations Planned at The Park The Virginia Athletics Department has announced plans to enhance and renovate The Park, home of the Cavalier softball team. Construction is under way and the second phase of this project is expected to be completed this fall. The goal of the project is to create a top-level playing field and facility. "This project is in keeping with the athletics department's goals to provide high quality facilities for our teams," said Executive Associate Director of Athletics Jon Oliver. "The work being done at The Park and in the softball locker room is designed to provide the team with improved facilities in which to prepare for competition and play games." Upgrades at The Park include a new playing surface consisting of Patriot Bermuda grass. Renovations will also create a new drainage and irrigation system. The dimensions of the field will also be slightly altered and increase to 210-220-210. Other renovations include new dugouts, bullpens and a second batting cage. Additionally, a new scoreboard and fence will be added. The Virginia softball team will also see its locker room, housed in University Hall, undergo a facelift. The locker room renovation includes new custom lockers and audio-visual capabilities. "The renovations at The Park are a sign of the administration's strong commitment to Virginia softball," said Eileen Schmidt, head softball coach. "The enhancements that will be complete by the 2009 season will help our student-athletes on a daily basis and improve the spectator experience at the Park." The first phase of the project was the installation of lights at The Park. This phase was completed prior to the 2008 season.
