Blog Banter: Sweep! Baseball Rolls Again

The No. 1-ranked Virginia baseball team swept Duke over the weekend with three ACC victories - 12-3 on Friday, 11-1 on Saturday and 10-6 on Sunday. UVa (39-9, 18-6 ACC) has won 10 straight games (6 straight in the ACC). Against the Blue Devils, the offense found a groove while the pitching was superb. The Hoos finished with 33 runs and 49 hits in the series, the first time Virginia has scored in double figures of all three games of an ACC series since the league went to the three-game series format in 1990.

Long-time poster and friend of The Sabre carolinawahoo took in the action Saturday at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, N.C. and he sent along some photos for Hoo fans. Thanks carolinawahoo! Here's one along with some links (1, 2, 3, 4) ...

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

The University of Virginia hosted a potential addition to the 2010 basketball recruiting class this past weekend, when 6-7, 210-pound St. Peter's Prep (Jersey City, N.J.) forward Ronald Roberts visited Charlottesville.

Roberts signed with St. John's last November. After Norm Roberts' dismissal and Steve Lavin's arrival, the talented senior asked for and was granted a release from the letter of intent he signed with the Red Storm. Besides Virginia, other schools in contention include Georgia Tech, Indiana, Oklahoma and St. Joseph's. Roberts has now taken three official visits (St. John's, St. Joe's and UVa) and could take two more if he should choose to do so.

Roberts has only played two seasons of varsity basketball. He averaged 19 points and 12 boards per contest this past season and is a "late bloomer" according to St. Peter's Prep head coach Mike Kelly.

"He transferred to St. Peter's Prep after his sophomore year, having not played any varsity games," Kelly said. "He is an absolute freak athletically. He is 6-7, 215 pounds. He has all the dynamics to be a pro someday. All of the coaches that have seen him play say the same thing. He just signed early and wasn't on the radar."

Roberts is a tremendous leaper who improved his face-up game this past season. At this point, defense is a big strength according to Coach Kelly.

I'll post an initial EDGE update on Roberts and his visit to UVa. Coach Kelly expects to speak further with Roberts about the visit early on in the week, though, so I'll follow up for more later on in the week.

Virginia currently has signed six high school seniors.

Playing in his second postseason all-star game, 6-9, 230-pound forward James Johnson scored 22 points in the 2nd Annual High School Academic All American Classic this past Saturday. Johnson, who starred at Elsinore (Wildomar, CA) this past season, signed with Virginia in November.

On the football recruiting front, the Cavaliers gained another commitment last Friday. 6-8, 285-pound offensive tackle Kelby Johnson is high school junior commitment number eight for Virginia, which also has a commitment from current senior Kyrrel Latimer, a safety prospect who intends on attending prep school before arriving at UVa.

Like Latimer, Johnson hails from DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD), which boasts one of the top high school football programs in the country. The program is deep and talented, so, in many instances, players have to wait their turn to start. This is no different for Johnson, who served as a top back-up last season and will start for the first time in his senior year.

Johnson chose Virginia over an offer from New Mexico and interest from Maryland, Michigan and Rutgers.

Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Parks, 2011 Recruits Visit UVa
Image: Kevin ParksWest Rowan (Mount Ulla, N.C.) running back Kevin Parks Jr. attended the University of Virginia's Spring Football Festival on April 10, but he wasn't done seeing his future school this month. Last Thursday, the 5-8, 195-pound senior returned to Charlottesville for another visit.

UVa's Latest Commit: OT Kelby Johnson
DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD) continues to be good to the University of Virginia. Last night, 6-8, 285-pound offensive tackle Kelby Johnson became the second 2011 class prospect to commit to the Cavaliers from the nationally regarded program.

A Potential In-State Race For Taylor?
Image: Caleb TaylorPhoebus (Hampton, VA) linebacker prospect Caleb Taylor spoke with several Virginia Tech coaches last Saturday. He got a somewhat better feel for where he stands in terms of a scholarship offer, but for now he is holding steady at four official offers - Louisville, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.

More Blog Banter: No Leader At Kicker

The Good Ol Blog featured a thought on football kickers this week. Check it out ...

As many fans already know, the Virginia football team released a post-spring depth chart Monday afternoon (click here for the PDF link). I put together this EDGE article on the offense and I'll have something on the defense soon as well. But I thought I'd share some special teams thoughts on the blog. As in, the Hoos didn't release a post-spring depth chart for special teams!

I don't think it was necessary to post the pecking order for all of the specialists (Jimmy Howell at punter and Danny Aiken at long snapper - yep, those seem fairly obvious), but the absence of a two-deep at kicker is troublesome simply because we all know just how shaky the kicking situation may be again this season if things don't improve. After all, the kickers combined to go 2 of 6 in the Spring Game on field goals. That's from three guys who have all kicked in real games before - unfortunately! Coach Mike London joked this spring that UVa might be the only team in NCAA history to have three different kickers returning that handled the three different duties (field goals, kickoffs, extra points). While that strategic blunder from the previous regime is a problem in and of itself, the bigger issue may be that no one in that trio (Robert Randolph, Chris Hinkebein, Drew Jarrett) has separated himself yet. Someone needs to win the field goals/extra points job and take almost all of the reps this fall so that the Cavaliers hopefully can develop some consistency there.

If not, that's one more piece of the puzzle to file under 'concerning' this fall. That and the 'if Aiken gets injured' card ... but let's not go there right now.

Cavaliers win on Hughes' and Winborne's late-game heroics

Connor Hughes kicks the winning FG with less than 10 seconds remaining.
Wake Forest gave Virginia quite a fight last Saturday, but the Hoos dug down deep and were able to pull out the win. While there were many heroes on the day, no one shined more than sophomore placekicker Connor Hughes. With the game under two minutes, Hughes connected on a booming 53-yarder field goal to tie the game. After a remarkable interception by Jamaine Winborne to get the Hoos into field goal range, Hughes nailed another one with less than 10 seconds remaining to win the game.

As mentioned above, there were quite a few heroes on the day for the Hoos. Matt Schaub returned to action for the first time since the opening drive against Duke over a month ago. Schaub came out hot, completing 30 of his 45 pass attempts for 326 yards and two touchdowns. Schaub also showed some guts, breaking free from an apparent sack and diving into the end zone for a crucial two-point conversation to tie the game at the start of the fourth quarter.

Virginia's defense should get some credit as well. While they did give up 47-yard touchdown pass to Wake in the third quarter, they dug down deep when the team needed it the most. When Virginia was coming back, Schaub threw two interceptions late in the game. Wake was unable to capitalize on either turnover. On a game-deciding 4th and 2 on UVa's 8-yard line, the Cavalier defense stopped Wake Forest to give Schaub a chance to move the team down the field for the tying score. And let's not forget Winborne's interception that put Virginia in field goal range to win the game, rather than going to overtime.

This was a character-building win for the Hoos over an improving Wake Forest team. The win puts UVa at 2-0 in the conference and 3-1 overall, which puts them off to a better start than last year's 9-5 bowl-winning team (the 2002 team started 2-2).

Fuchs Finds Home At Virginia
Image: Tim FuchsFor Tim Fuchs, it was one dream shattered, then another realized. As a high school senior in Merrick, N.Y., Fuchs longed to attend and play lacrosse at the Naval Academy. But, just when he thought he was set to enroll, there was one minor detail that got in the way: Fuchs is red-green color blind. The Naval Academy caught Fuchs' color blindness in a physical exam, and his admission to the school fell through at the last minute. Already late in the admissions process, Fuchs - still with the desire to play college lacrosse - emailed some 15 college coaches. Only one responded.

Depth Chart Discussion Spring 2010: Offense
Image: Marc VericaThe Virginia football team released a post-spring depth chart Monday afternoon, giving fans their first glimpse of who made good impressions during Mike London's first practices at UVa this spring. Oh, it also gives football diehards something to talk about while sitting through the long wait for fall practices! So let's do just that and take a look at the offensive side of the depth chart.

Softball Team Eyes NCAA Bid
Image: Abby SnyderWhen coach Eileen Schmidt arrived a little less than three years ago, not only did the Virginia softball team fail to win on a consistent basis, it didn't even seem like it wanted to. "They were looking for ways to lose," Schmidt said. "Everything was kind of doomsday." "Honestly, we had become used to losing," senior Abby Snyder said, "if that's even possible." Now, the Hoos are winning like they've been doing it all along. With just one win at home against Florida State this weekend, Virginia can clinch second place in the conference, and put itself in position to make the first NCAA Tournament appearance in program history.
