Official Release, UVa Athletics Media Relations

Former Virginia golfer Steve Marino finished tied for 14th in his first appearance at The Masters. Marino finished at 2-under 286. He had rounds of 71, 73, 69 and 73. As one of the top 16 finishers at the event, Marino meets the criteria to receive an invitation to the 2011 tournament. • Colonial Forge QB Blake Frohnapfel (no offer yet)
  • Colonial Forge TE Eric Frohnapfel (no offer yet)
  • Hermitage LB Curtis Grant

An EDGE article was posted Sunday night on 6-5, 290-pound offensive lineman Ross Burbank, who is a heavy lean to the Cavaliers after earning an offer on April 3. Burbank, who also has an offer from ODU, could commit as early as this week.

This week, we'll have articles out on Landon Turner and Curtis Grant. Turner discusses whether or not Virginia was able to get seriously in the race for his signature, while Grant, TheSabre.com's No. 1 prospect in the state in 2011, reflects on his latest visit to Charlottesville. I hope to catch up with all confirmed visitors this coming week or next, so stay tuned for continuous updates from the Spring Football Festival.

Updates on the EDGE subscriber message board have already been posted on Burbank, Grant, Caleb Taylor, Turner, Watford and Whitmire.

DE Chris Brathwaite, QB/TE Jake McGee, RB Kevin Parks Jr., OL Morgan Moses and OL Cody Wallace are the 2010 signees we confirmed to be in attendance on Saturday. I plan to catch up with FUMA head coach John Shuman for the latest on Moses and Wallace. I also hope to reach KP Parks for his take on the Spring Game, so stay tuned later this week for more from the 2010 front.

2010 class commitment Kyrrel Latimer, a standout out of DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD), attended on Saturday as well. The talented safety prospect planned on attending Fork Union at last check, but I hope to catch up with him for the latest this week. The 5-11, 190-pound senior was accompanied by DeMatha junior DL Kendall Patterson on Saturday.

Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Virginia Beach OL Leaning To UVa
A week after scoring a scholarship offer from head coach Mike London, 6-5, 290-pound offensive lineman Ross Burbank returned to the University of Virginia, visiting for the third time this year. Burbank, a junior out of Cox High School in Virginia Beach (VA), had a good experience at Saturday's Spring Football Festival.

Dunbar WR Has UVa Offer
Dunbar (Washington, D.C.) head coach Craig Jefferies stopped by the University of Virginia on Saturday to watch a spring practice, but he was not alone. He was accompanied by one of his newest players in wide receiver prospect Daniel Adams, a 6-3, 200-pound junior who transferred from Northwest High School (Germantown, MD) to Dunbar several months ago. Virginia has offered Adams, a player Jefferies is very high on.

Blog Banter: Baseball Coverage

The Good Ol Blog had lots of baseball news this week. Here's a portion of the latest update:

The biggest difference between Virginia's 9-7 loss Saturday afternoon and the Hoos' 9-1 thrashing of Georgia Tech on Sunday were the little things. But as the song goes, "Little things mean a lot."

Saturday Virginia did not do the little things.

"We just didn't do the small things that it takes to beat a really good club," O'Connor lamented. "A couple of times we had a runner at third base and less than two outs and didn't get the run home. We didn't make a play or two defensively that led to a couple of runs and those two runs proved to be pretty pivotal in this ball game. We didn't execute some pitches on the mound that we needed to to win."

Clearly Sunday was a different day as the Cavaliers did all of the little things that lead to 9-1 blowouts of No. 2 opponents.

   SabreMail History

Issue No. 401 - July 6, 2009

Former Virginia baseball star Ryan Zimmerman has earned his first Major League Baseball All-Star nomination as a member of the Washington Nationals. Zimmerman is the first UVa player to ever make the All-Star team. Read the Virginiasports.com release.

The Washington Post has this story about Zimmeran's selection; he earned his spot on the team through balloting from players, managers, and coaches. Here's an excerpt:

For several years now - but especially since he signed a five-year, $45 million contract extension in April -- Zimmerman has stood as the central piece of the Nationals' rebuilding plan. Zimmerman's status as an all-star, the organization feels, helps validate his worthiness of that role.

"The kid has been recognized now, and I hope this is the start of a stretch of maybe 10, 15 years for him," Nationals Manager Manny Acta said.

Mission Spring Cleaning Wraps Up
Image: Mike LondonThe final public outing of the spring for Virginia's football team has come and gone after the annual Spring Game clicked off the calendar on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon in Charlottesville. Plenty of questions remain. All of those questions and limited answers, frankly, don't mean much though. As is the case with many of our own households, this spring phase was all about doing the chores that hopefully lead to enjoying better days ahead.

Defense Highlights Spring Game
Image: Marc VericaFrom the perspective of a Virginia fan, the best part of the Spring Game is that there's always a positive way to look at the outcome. Such was the case on Saturday at Scott Stadium, as the first-team offense was bottled up by the first-team defense for much of the controlled scrimmage segment of the Spring Football Festival. The orange team, consisting of the first-team defense and reserve offense, blew out the blue team, consisting of the first-team offense and second-team defense by a score of 30-3.

5 Things To Watch At The Spring Game
With Saturday's Spring Game on the docket this Saturday, the Virginia football team will debut many things - even if the full playbook isn't one of them. A new coaching staff, a new defensive alignment, and new pro combat series uniforms are just some of the intriguing factors for the weekend. With so many new aspects of the team to keep track of, here are five things to watch on Saturday at this year's Spring Game.

Bruno Making Early Impact For Hoos
Image: Stephen BrunoStephen Bruno Jr. is on his knees, with a ball and glove in hand. His father, Stephen Bruno Sr., stands 10 feet away. The younger Bruno turns so that his left shoulder points toward his father, cocks, and fires, and the ball smacks into Bruno Sr.'s glove directly in front of his chest. The elder Bruno moves back a few feet; again, his son hits the target. Back and back goes Bruno Sr., until his son can no longer hit the glove with pinpoint accuracy. At that point, the elder Bruno begins to move in, and the drill is repeated until he is back at the starting distance. For the 6-year-old Bruno Jr., it was the beginning of a baseball career that has only gotten brighter.

UVa Corners Could Lead Defense
Image: Chase MinnifieldSeveral times during spring practice, new Virginia coach Mike London has mentioned playing more bump or press coverage with the cornerbacks. Of course, in order to deploy this strategy, a team better have corners that can handle the challenges. Fortunately for London and cornerbacks coach Chip West, the Cavaliers have a great pair of corners ready to lead the way.

Shining Through: The History Of UVa's Colors
Image: 1900's UVa Football UniformTheSabre.com is pleased to introduce a new series on the history of UVa football. Writer, director, and alumnus Kevin Edds is currently in production on the upcoming documentary Wahoowa: The History of Virginia Cavalier Football and will highlight some of the most interesting moments in the more than 120-year history of the South's oldest football program.

Inman Preps For Final Run
Image: Dontrelle InmanThe Virginia football team wraps up spring practice this week with its annual Spring Game on Saturday. The scrimmage part of the afternoon's festival activities begins at 2 p.m. For receiver Dontrelle Inman, believe it or not, it will be his final Spring Game with the Cavaliers - "I feel like I just got here," he said recently. The Sabre caught up with Inman after an open practice for a "Quick Take" so read about the senior wideout, Bill Schautz, and more in this notes package.

Linebackers Part Of Speed Shift
Image: Ausar WalcottWith a new coaching staff in town with a 4-3 defense being installed, some players are making shifts around the defense and there's a common theme among many of the moves: the need for speed. That's why former safeties in the secondary are lining up at outside linebacker this spring, including Ausar Walcott and LaRoy Reynolds. Senior linebacker Jared Detrick says the more speed, the better.
