Sabre fans,

The Sabre covers the Hoos like no one else - analysis, columns, features, photos, recruiting coverage, and more on everything from football and basketball to No. 1 teams like baseball, men's lacrosse, and men's tennis. Join today with our "Put Spring In Your Step" new subscriber promotion (offer good through April 10, 2010)!

Check out these samples:

  • Of course, Marc Verica isn't the lone wolf in the QB sessions - there's a whole pack of players working there this spring with some freshman recruits on the way this fall as well. In other words, Verica is in another spring practice where a quarterback battle is in play - "I think it's right that we're all starting from square one," Verica said.

Among the players joining Verica Monday in red quarterback jerseys were Ross Metheny (6'2", 195), Quintin Hunter (6'1", 195) and Michael Strauss (6'2", 205), a Florida freshman that enrolled in January. UVa coach Mike London, who joined reporters on the practice field for a face-to-face interview prior to the start of practice, said he wants the best man to win the job.

"I want to see the best quarterback earn the job and take it and run with it, whether it's Marc or anybody else," London said. "It's a wide-open approach. He's been a guy who has taken snaps and we'll see what happens. All of those quarterbacks know they'll be evaluated daily and we'll see how you perform."

  • Elsinore (Wildomar, CA) senior forward James Johnson saw Virginia in action last week against Boston College and Duke and came away impressed with the team's performance.

"I like the team, watching them play," he said. "I can't wait to be apart of it. At the same time, it was hard watching because I want to be there so bad. It is my dream to play college basketball and it's so close. I've watched it for so long, but now it'll finally be my time to be in the spotlight."

A consistent worker, Johnson is lifting four times a week, running and putting up shots consistently in the gym. Otherwise, he is just awaiting the time when he can arrive at the University of Virginia.

   Recruiting News

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Prospects and high school coaches were encouraged to stop by the Virginia football's spring practice this past Saturday. As recruiting coordinator Jeff Hanson told TheSabre.com in last week's "Quick Take," the staff wants to create many opportunities for high school prospects to come on Grounds and get to know the staff.

Hanson said, "We want to try and get as many kids that we're recruiting on campus so they can meet the staff and get around us and get around Coach London and see our facilities and see our campus and just get around us and know what kind of people we are because we're very interested in the student-athlete here and the relationships we build with the kids we're recruiting are very, very important."

We'll follow up on last Saturday's visits with interviews and articles throughout the week. You can also read the EDGE board for the latest info.

Also this week, we'll have an update on Hampton (VA) quarterback David Watford, a junior who just received an official offer from UVa. Watford, a cousin of former Virginia quarterback Marques Hagans, also has interest from ECU and Virginia Tech.

Also this week, we check in with VirginiaPreps.com Editor Rod Johnson, who discusses the state of state of Virginia football recruiting. Rod will answer questions on the potential impact of Mike London, especially last month's scrimmage at ODU, and give perspective on the amount of talent in the state in the 2011 class.

On Saturday, Virginia men's basketball recruit James Johnson will play in the Jack Jones Shootout in Memphis, TN. For more information on the event, check out www.jackjonesshootout.com.

Johnson, a 6-9, 230-pound forward out of Elsinore High School in Wildomar, CA, averaged 22 points and 13 rebounds per game this past season. He helped the Tigers to a 22-5 overall record and an appearance in the state semifinals.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. To sign up for an Edge subscription, please check out the Sabre Edge Sign Up and Information Page. If you're already on board as an Edge subscriber, click the links below to catch up on recruiting.

Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Quick Take - Coach Jeff Hanson
Image: Coach Jeff HansonSpearheading Virginia's efforts on the recruiting trail, Jeff Hanson, UVa's Recruiting Coordinator and defensive line coach, took some time for a "Quick Take" with TheSabre.com. The prevailing message is obvious. It has been a theme since coach Mike London took over the Cavaliers' program. Without question, the state of Virginia is a priority for this football staff.

Signee Notes: Mitchell In Action
Image: Akil MitchellVirginia fans will get a look at one of its 2010 recruits this evening, when Charlotte Christian (N.C.) takes on Findlay Prep (Las Vegas, NV) in the quarterfinals of the ESPN Rise prep tournament. Charlotte Christian features 6-7 forward Akil Mitchell, who hopes to help his team to victory at 8:00 p.m. on ESPNU. Also read more on Will Regan and K.T. Harrell.

In Case You Missed It ...

Sabre articles since the last SabreMail

Young Hoos Making An Impact
Image: Keith WermanLast season, the Virginia baseball team made its exit from Omaha after three games. The Cavaliers, in their first-ever trip to the College World Series, lost to eventual-champion LSU, beat Cal State Fullerton, and lost to Arkansas to end their dream run. The Hoos were young, untested, and a newcomer to the national stage. There is no such anonymity this season for the Cavaliers. The entire college baseball world knows about Virginia. And perhaps the most amazing aspect of this No. 1 team is, in fact, it's relative youth.

Mattes Embraces Return To UVa
Image: Coach Ron MattesIn the pressroom at Scott Stadium, there is a large board pasted to the wall that showcases a blown-up article from The Daily Progress. The article, written by long-time UVa reporter Jerry Ratcliffe, is about the 1984 Peach Bowl, in which Virginia took down Purdue - a landmark victory for the program early in the tenure of then-Virginia coach George Welsh. The headline reads, "By George, Cavs win." Ron Mattes was an All-ACC defensive tackle for that team. Twenty-six years later, by Ron, the Cavs will attempt to reinvigorate the offensive line.

Singer Sets Good Example For Hoos
Image: Singer and Barrack hold the national championship trophyThroughout the past three years, the Virginia men's tennis team has had its fair share of superstars. Even the casual fan could name, or at least recognize, Somdev Devvarman, Dom Inglot, and, more recently, Michael Shabaz. If you have been only a casual follower of coach Brian Boland's successful team, one name might have eluded you thus far. This season, his last as a Cavalier, Lee Singer has stepped into an important role as a player and a leader both on and off the court.

UVa's Midfield Making Match-ups Difficult
Image: Shamel BrattonShamel Bratton's beat-the-clock goal in the third quarter Saturday is just one example of Virginia's dangerous 2010 midfield that can strike from anywhere at anytime. Without question, the depth and talent in the midfield causes quite a few problems for opponents. So far, the midfielders have helped catapult the Hoos to an undefeated record entering ACC play this weekend at Maryland and the nation's No. 1 ranking.

Bennett Seeks Big Things From Big Class
Image: Tony BennettWhen Virginia coach Tony Bennett secured a commitment from Billy Baron as the sixth player to the 2010 recruiting class on March 2, discussions began about how next season's men's basketball roster would be handled. At that point, Bennett appeared to have eight scholarship players returning to the squad; adding those to the six newcomers, there were a minimum of 14 candidates for 13 scholarships. Many wondered who would draw the short straw. Bennett, it turns out, was several steps ahead of those speculators. It was no accident that he landed one more scholarship-worthy player than he had scholarships available. Unexpected attrition, he figured, is a reality of college basketball, and likely would solve the problem for him. He was right.

Aboushi Auditions For OL Spot
Image: Oday AboushiIf a director is auditioning someone for a role as an offensive tackle, the desired character traits might read something like this: tall, strong, and athletic; intelligent and fast learner; personal experience preferred. That's exactly the task for Mike London and Ron Mattes as the Virginia football team continues its spring workouts - find an offensive tackle to fill the spot vacated by Will Barker. At least one player is getting a callback about the vacated role.

Photo Gallery: Baseball Sweeps BC
Image: Tyler CannonThe Virginia baseball team has won three straight ACC series, including a pair of strong weekend showings at Davenport Field. The Hoos swept Boston College and took 2 of 3 games against Clemson. Check out some photos of Tyler Cannon, Keith Werman, Robert Morey, and other Hoos in this EDGE gallery that features 71 images.
