Imovbioh Commits To Women's Basketball

The Virginia women's basketball team received good news over the weekend when Sarah Imovbioh, a junior at St. Anne's-Belfield in Charlottesville, gave a verbal commitment to the program. Imovbioh helped STAB reach the VISAA Division I Semifinals this season where the Saints fell 64-60. Imovbioh scored 53 points in the loss, making 22 of 26 field goals, to go with 21 rebounds, 5 steals, and 4 blocks.

Imovbioh averaged 32.2 points, 20.0 rebounds, 4.9 blocked shots, 4.3 steals, and 1.1 assists per game this season.

Imovbioh is the style of post player often needed in ACC play. An athletic 6'2" junior forward, she plays with a lot of energy and is noted for her work ethic beyond games as well. Imovbioh is a relentless rebounder and gets off the floor quickly; she shows solid touch around the rim and has worked to add a face-up jumper throughout her junior season as well..

Sabre Editor Kris Wright's take: As someone who coached against Imovbioh and the Saints this season, I know all too well how good of a player Imovbioh is. She poured in 34 points in her team's 5-point victory and added 19 rebounds as well (story here). We surrounded her with a zone to limit her touches but still couldn't take her out of the action because she remained so active on the floor. She also hit at least three face-up jumpers from 15+ feet in the game. A very nice pick-up for the Hoos, who need a rebounder and worker of this style.

This Week In Recruiting

Football recruiting

Menchville (Newport News, VA) athlete Clifton Richardson spent Saturday in Norfolk, watching Virginia football's scrimmage at Old Dominion University. The 6-1, 195-pound junior remains a soft commitment to the Cavaliers, but he came away pleased by the experience.

"It was great," he said. "I like how the practice went. There were a lot of Virginia fans there, which I didn't really expect."

Richardson wasn't allowed to converse with the coaches per NCAA rules, but he did spend some time with Virginia players after the event was over. He did notice "a lot of players recruited by Virginia" in the stands as well.

For more from Richardson, check out the EDGE later this week.

Also this week, I hope to catch up with some of the high school coaches in attendance for Saturday's scrimmage. I want to discuss the potential impact, recruiting-wise, of the event and what it could mean as far as potential Virginia success in the Tidewater area. I also hope to track down more recruits in attendance.

Basketball recruiting

I was in Cary, North Carolina, Saturday for Dave Telep's Carolina Challenge, an event that features the Top 80 high school basketball players in the Tar Heel state. I'll have reports on Virginia targets throughout the week, including 2011 and 2012 class recruits. Guard Demarcus Harrison (UVa offer), forward Bernard Sullivan (UVa offer), and wing forward Aaron Roundtree will be featured from the 2011 class, while forward Montrezl Harrell and point guard Tyler Lewis will be featured from the 2012 class. Harrell, a 6-7 sophomore, has been offered by Virginia and South Carolina and visited Virginia earlier this year.

I'll also have more with Virginia 2010 class signee K.T. Harrell this week. After a big-time senior season, the 6-4 senior was a finalist for Mr. Basketball in the state of Alabama. He fell short of attaining that goal, but he did earn Gatorade Player of the Year recognition in Alabama.

Fellow Virginia recruit Will Regan had 21 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks in Nichols' (Buffalo, N.Y.) Federation Cup Class A Championship win over Jamesville-Dewitt. The 6-8, 220-pound forward earned tournament MVP honors, capping off a big-time high school basketball career. As a senior, he helped Nichols to three championship titles including league, Catholic division and state.

Regan Capping Off Career In Style
Image: Will ReganNichols School (Buffalo, N.Y.) will continue what has been a terrific 2009/2010 season this weekend, when it faces Long Island Lutheran in the semifinals of the Federation state playoffs. Helped by senior forward and Virginia recruit Will Regan, Nichols already has the Manhattan Cup (league championship) and a Catholic Class A championship under its belt and is looking for more.

Blog Banter: FB Recruiting Notes - Latest On Moses

I caught up with Fork Union Military Academy Postgraduate head coach John Shuman today. Shuman, fresh off of FUMA's Spring Break, says 6-7, 340-pound Morgan Moses continues to work towards qualifying.

"He took the latest SAT last Saturday. He is scheduled to take the ACT on April 10," Shuman said.

Moses will finish up a course at Fork Union in early April. He will then take one more course. Shuman is hoping for top grades in those two courses, as two top grades would help Moses in his attempt to qualify.

"He is doing real good in the classroom, so we feel he is moving forward," Shuman said.

Moses will take all standardized tests.

"He is anxious to get over to UVa on April 10 after the SAT," Shuman said. "I told him to get this done, get the points, and he'll be over there all year next year."

Check out these samples:

  • Of course, Marc Verica isn't the lone wolf in the QB sessions - there's a whole pack of players working there this spring with some freshman recruits on the way this fall as well. In other words, Verica is in another spring practice where a quarterback battle is in play - "I think it's right that we're all starting from square one," Verica said.

Among the players joining Verica Monday in red quarterback jerseys were Ross Metheny (6'2", 195), Quintin Hunter (6'1", 195) and Michael Strauss (6'2", 205), a Florida freshman that enrolled in January. UVa coach Mike London, who joined reporters on the practice field for a face-to-face interview prior to the start of practice, said he wants the best man to win the job.

"I want to see the best quarterback earn the job and take it and run with it, whether it's Marc or anybody else," London said. "It's a wide-open approach. He's been a guy who has taken snaps and we'll see what happens. All of those quarterbacks know they'll be evaluated daily and we'll see how you perform."

  • Elsinore (Wildomar, CA) senior forward James Johnson saw Virginia in action last week against Boston College and Duke and came away impressed with the team's performance.

"I like the team, watching them play," he said. "I can't wait to be apart of it. At the same time, it was hard watching because I want to be there so bad. It is my dream to play college basketball and it's so close. I've watched it for so long, but now it'll finally be my time to be in the spotlight."

A consistent worker, Johnson is lifting four times a week, running and putting up shots consistently in the gym. Otherwise, he is just awaiting the time when he can arrive at the University of Virginia.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Football recruiting

The University of Virginia enjoyed a successful Spring Game on Saturday, scoring its fifth commitment in the 2009 class in Liberty (Bealeton, VA) safety Corey Lillard. Lillard, a 5-11, 208-pound prospect, chose Virginia over offers from Arkansas, Boston College, Duke, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Rutgers, and West Virginia.

All five of Virginia's 2009 commits hail from the state of Virginia. Lillard is the only prospect designated for defense, as he is a hard-hitting safety who tallied 67 tackles, including 52 solo efforts, last season as a junior for head coach Tommy Buzzo.

"He is a very physical kid," Buzzo told TheSabre.com in an earlier interview. "He has the gift of knowing how to hit. Everybody he is in contact with goes backwards."

UVa's Practice Hits The Road
Image: Coach Mike LondonNORFOLK - The Virginia football team's sixth practice could have gone better Saturday. The offense could have looked sharper. Both the offense and defense were flagged a few times too many. The special teams' units could have been cleaner, from the kickers on down to the long snappers. On the other hand, it could have gone a whole lot worse, too. Based on a rough head count, an estimated 3,000 Wahoo fans showed up to S.B. Ballard Stadium at Foreman Field on Saturday to watch the Cavaliers' sixth open practice and the first away from Charlottesville in recent memory.

Photo Gallery: 2010 Practice Part II
Image: Corey MosleyThe Virginia football team's spring practices keep rolling along in preparation for the April 10 Spring Game. With the offense in blue jerseys and the defense wearing white, the Hoos worked through drills and battled in team competitions. Check out some of the action with this EDGE photo gallery that features 80 images of the Cavaliers.

Hoos Handle Hopkins
When you have as many weapons offensively as the Virginia men's lacrosse team, the secret to success is truly an elementary concept: share. On Saturday, the Cavaliers showed just how dangerous they can be by being patient and unselfish on offense in a 15-6 demolition of visiting Johns Hopkins. In the end, the Hoos had three players with hat tricks and eight different players in the scoring column thanks to 8 assists on the day.

Consistent Cannon Keeps Producing
Image: Tyler CannonDuring his tenure at Virginia, senior shortstop Tyler Cannon has emerged as one of the pillars of the program. His consistency and durability are truly remarkable; last season he played in 64 of 65 games played by the Cavaliers, and he is on track to repeat this feat of endurance in 2010. Cannon has played and started in 20 of 21 games thus far this season, making valuable contributions on offense and defense. Even though Major League Baseball came calling this summer, he decided to finish what he started here at Virginia.

Johnson Adjusts With Move To End
Image: Cam JohnsonWhen new Virginia coach Mike London came to town, it was obvious that that there would have to be several position changes on the defensive side of the ball to accommodate the scheme change from a 3-4 alignment to a 4-3. Before spring practice began, figuring out who those players would be might have involved planting a microphone in London's office as he met with players - with the exception, perhaps, of Cam Johnson.

Q&A - Coach Scott Wachenheim
For as long as Anthony Poindexter was on former Virginia coach Al Groh's staff, Poindexter clearly led the coaches in the number of times that onlookers commented with thoughts like, "What a character!" With the new staff that Mike London has brought in, Poindexter has some competition, including tight ends coach Scott Wachenheim. After Wednesday's practice, TheSabre.com conducted a question-and-answer session with the exuberant tight ends coach.

J. Snyder Working Hard At D-End
Image: Jake SnyderWhile many of his classmates saw varying degrees of action last fall as true freshmen, defensive end Jake Snyder did not take the field for the Hoos. With four years of eligibility ahead under new coach Mike London, however, Snyder is happy to have a preparation year under his belt and excited about the opportunity to play as an aggressive lineman for the Cavaliers.

Mihota Hopes To Take Center Stage
Image: Anthony MihotaWhen Jack Shields opted to leave the Virginia football program during the offseason, it left a starting job open at the center position on the offensive line. And much like quarterback, the Hoos only have one player on the roster with in-game experience at the position. Junior Anthony Mihota isn't taking anything for granted, however, as he works through the team's first spring with new coach Mike London.
