Virginia Wins Third Consecutive ACC Crown

UVa Athletics Media Relations, Official Release

The Virginia women's swimming team won its third consecutive and eighth overall Atlantic Coast Conference title and freshman Lauren Perdue was tabbed the meet's most valuable swimmer of the championships Saturday at Koury Natatorium in Chapel Hill, N.C.

It was the first time in school history Virginia has won three consecutive conference championships. Seniors Mei Christensen, Jenna Harris, Colleen Law, Katherine McDonnell, Jen Narum and Leslie Swinley make up the most successful class in UVa history.

"Winning never gets old," Virginia head coach Mark Bernardino said. "I am just thrilled for these kids; what a tremendous effort they have put in since last March. We beat some very talented teams at this meet. It's a special win for this group. The credit belongs to the seniors - their dedication and ability to keep this team together allows us to have the kind of chemistry to make special things happen."

The Cavaliers finished with 877.5 points en route to winning 14 of 18 swimming events, including all five relays, to finish ahead of second place North Carolina (642.5) and third place Florida State (545). It was the third straight year Virginia has tallied at least 800 points in the victory.

"This one means the most," Christensen said. "We broke the curse of only winning two - winning three in a row just sets us up for more success in the future. This being my senior year, I am glad this is something I will be able to look back on with pride."

Perdue won the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free and was a member of four of Virginia's five winning relay teams. It was the second year in a row a Cavalier has earned the honor; Christensen received the award as a junior in 2009.

"It is so well-deserved," Bernardino said of Perdue's award. "She is such a catalyst to our success. To win seven events, swim the kind of times and perform the way she did as a first year, she made great things happen."

Perdue also became the fifth person in school history to win all three of her individual events and the first since Mirjana Bosevska won the 200 fly, 200 IM and 400 IM in 2002. Perdue is just the second Cavalier to do it in her freshman year. Cara Lane claimed the 500 free, 1650 free and 200 fly as a freshman in 2000 and later went on to win two National Championships.

"It is so much fun to be a part of this team," Perdue. "We have come a long way and we are going to keep rising to the top. I am so thrilled to be part of this; we made history tonight and that is a great feeling. I am happy to be part of this team. That is all I can ask for."

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Men's basketball recruits enjoyed big games last week

UVa men's basketball recruits K.T. Harrell, Joe Harris, James Johnson, Akil Mitchell and Will Regan were in action last week and will be in playoff action this week.

4-star guard K.T. Harrell scored 24 points and added five rebounds, two assists and two steals as Brewbaker Tech (Montgomery, AL) defeated Andalusia in the Class 4A South Regional Championship. Brewbaker moves on to the 4A state semifinals for the first time in its 10-year history. The semifinal match-up against Columbia takes place on Wednesday.

Here is an article on Brewbaker's win.

6-5 guard/forward Joe Harris and the Lake Chelan (WA) Goats captured the Caribou Trail League District title with a win over Lake Roosevelt last Saturday. Harris, who scored 35 points in Lake Chelan's semifinal victory over Cashmere, will now lead the Goats into a District 6 Regional 1A playoff match-up against Freeman. The game takes place this Saturday.

Lake Chelan is 21-1 on the season.

6-9 James Johnson guided Elsinore (Wildomar, CA) to an easy second round victory over Magnolia on Saturday night, scoring 23 points in the 92-67 win. Johnson left the game mid-way into the third quarter, when the game was no longer in doubt. This article includes a great pic of Johnson slamming one home.

The Tigers will now face Santa Margarita on Tuesday night in the CIF Division III-AA Southern Section Quarterfinals.

6-8 forward Will Regan scored 24 points as Nichols School (Buffalo, N.Y.) defeated Cardinal O'Hara 70-44 in the Manhattan Cup Quarterfinals. Nichols will face Timon on Tuesday night in semifinal action.

For more on Regan, check out this piece by the Buffalo News.

Charlotte Christian was in action on Saturday. 6-7 forward Akil Mitchell pumped in 21 points in an 80-46 win over Charlotte Latin. Charlotte Christian is now 27-3 on the season and ranked No. 1 in The Charlotte Observer's "Sweet 16." Christian takes to the court again this Thursday in the NCISAA playoffs.

Football recruiting

Star wide receiver Quinta Funderburk has broken out in a big way recruiting-wise, reeling in seven official offers including SEC powers Alabama and Florida. Virginia is one of the more recent offers for the 6-2, 200-pound junior, who talks more about his recruitment in an EDGE article that will be posted this week. We'll also have more on Oscar Smith junior linebacker Raysean Richardson, who attended Virginia's junior day on Jan. 16.

Virginia Honors Barber, Long by Retiring Jerseys

Official Release
UVa Athletic Media Relations

Chris Long and his family during his jersey retirement ceremony.
During separate ceremonies at Saturday's home football game against Virginia Tech, the Virginia athletics department retired the jerseys of former standout tailback Tiki Barber and senior defensive end Chris Long. Both players' jerseys will be displayed in the future at Scott Stadium along with the numbers that have previously been retired by six former players.

Barber completed his career in 1996 as UVa's all-time leading rusher with 3,389 yards. He was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year and the ACC Offensive Player of the Year in 1996 after leading the conference in rushing, all-purpose yards and punt returns.

Long has been a mainstay of the Cavaliers' defensive line throughout his career. One of the most dominant defensive ends in school history, he is fifth in the country in sacks this season and third among defensive linemen in tackling. A two-time team captain, he ranks eighth in school history in sacks.

Jersey retirement is a new level of recognition at Virginia to honor players who have significantly impacted the program and Long and Barber are the first football players to be honored in this way. Individuals recognized in this way will have their jerseys retired, but their number will remain active. Last November the UVa athletics department retired the jersey of basketball player Curtis Staples during the halftime ceremonies of the opening of John Paul Jones Arena.

Six Virginia players have had their uniform numbers retired and those numbers will not be worn again. Those numbers honor the most decorated players in the program's history, including Jim Dombrowski (73), Bill Dudley (35), Gene Edmonds (97), Shawn Moore (12), Joe Palumbo (48) and Frank Quayle (24).

In Case You Missed It ...

Sabre articles since the last SabreMail

Caution: Entering D-Free Zone
During the second half of Virginia's game at Clemson, coach Tony Bennett switched to a zone defense. And make no mistake, Bennett hates a zone defense. After all, you should be able to accomplish the same goals - contain dribble penetration and create discomfort in the post - in his preferred Pack-Line man-to-man defense. Chances are, he finally got sick of watching his team ruin the beauty of the Pack-Line.

'Reeling' Hoos Drop Fifth Straight
Image: Sylven LandesbergAt the start of February, it appeared that the Virginia men's basketball team had proved that it belonged in the ACC race. Now, after five losses in a row, it has become evident that coach Tony Bennett's Cavaliers still have a long way to go. In the latest setback at Clemson, the Hoos trailed by 19 at the half, and ultimately fell 72-49 at Littlejohn Coliseum.

ACC Scouting Report: Clemson
Image: Mustafa FarrakhanFollowing four straight losses things don't get any easier for the Cavaliers on Saturday as they face another strong, athletic, defensive-minded team away from home. The Clemson Tigers present some rare match-ups and challenges and while they don't run the type of scheme that has given UVa difficulties lately, the Tigers do present a look and style that the Cavaliers haven't seen all season.

Kris: Embrace The Process
Image: Tony BennettEarlier this week, the Virginia men's tennis team won its third straight ITA Team Indoors National Championship. It's just the latest piece of success for Brian Boland and the Cavaliers. Of course, it hasn't always been that way, something that fans should remember as Tony Bennett's first season continues at Virginia.

Myers' Squad Looks Forward To New Season
While talking to coach Julie Myers and some members of the Virginia women's lacrosse team, I felt a curious sense of deja vu. Last week I was consumed by men's lacrosse, so covering the women's squad this week required a slight gearshift on my part. However, the similarities between the two 2010 lacrosse teams are striking.

Seminoles Shut Down Hoos Again
Image: Jeff JonesA little more than a year ago, the Virginia men's basketball team - fresh off a loss to Maryland in College Park - played Florida State at the John Paul Jones Arena, looking to snap a three-game ACC losing streak. Didn't happen. On Wednesday night, Virginia once again had just lost its third ACC game in a row on the road against Maryland, and looked for a better effort against the Noles in Charlottesville. Didn't happen. Virginia hit its low point of the season thus far, trailing by as many as 23 points in a humiliating 69-50 loss, its fourth straight since posting a 5-2 record to open ACC play.

ACC Scouting Report: FSU
Trying to turn around a three-game conference losing streak, UVa takes on the defensive-minded Florida State Seminoles at John Paul Jones Arena on Wednesday night. How will the Cavaliers attack the best defense they've faced all year? How will they attack FSU's limited offense? I will try to tackle these questions in this ACC scouting report.

5 Key Questions For O'Connor's Hoos
Image: Danny HultzenComing off a phenomenal postseason run with his team returning virtually intact, Brian O'Connor's Virginia Cavaliers are a consensus top three preseason selection and most college baseball talking (or blogging) heads have them as a lock for a return trip to the College World Series. What could keep the Hoos from returning to Omaha? As we look ahead to the 2010 season, we'll tackle that and four other important questions - once we know the answers, it likely will indicate how far this team can go in the 2010 campaign.

Terps Trounce Hoos
Image: Mike ScottEntering Monday night's make-up game with Maryland, the Virginia men's basketball team had allowed 61 points per game, which included an average of 63.1 in ACC games. Maryland had more than that with 12 minutes still to play. Yes, the results were as bad as that sounds. The Cavaliers fell in College Park 85-66, dropping the Hoos to .500 in the ACC for the first time this season.

Cavaliers Win Third Straight Title
Image: Drew Courtney and Brian Boland CelebrateWith Virginia on the verge of winning its third consecutive National Team Indoors Championship, coach Brian Boland couldn't help but let a grin creep on to his face, which only grew broader as he scanned the a sea of orange and blue on hand at the Boar's Head Sport's Club. Boland said he was "embracing the moment." And what a moment it was. With a 4-1 victory over Tennessee, the Cavaliers became the first team since the mid-1970s to win three straight National Team Indoors Championships.

ACC Scouting Report: Maryland
In these scouting reports there hasn't been much discussion of the flex offense. Virginia has faced teams that run a flex (N.C. State) and has seen teams that have worked in flex sets (Virginia Tech and Wake Forest) but the Hoos haven't faced an attack like they will see against the Terrapins. Let's take a look at that and more in this ACC scouting report.

Breaking Down The Hokie Loss
Image: Mike ScottThe first meeting between Virginia and Virginia Tech was a battle and matching the emotional tenor from that game seemed like a difficult task for both teams heading into their second contest in Blacksburg. Not only did the two teams match the intensity, they exceeded it in a game that was in doubt until the final 30 seconds. Neither team took a big lead and neither seemed to be able to pull away and take control. I'll do my best to explore what made this game so tight and the factors that swung the second game toward the Hokies.

Breaking Down The WFU Loss
Image: Tony BennettFollowing a run of two straight wins over North Carolina schools, Virginia took the court with a chance to get revenge on a third. Wake Forest had dealt UVa its first ACC loss earlier in the season in Winston-Salem where the Demon Deacons got the Cavaliers in early foul trouble and coasted to victory. The second contest mirrored the first in terms of strategy but not result. Virginia played an excellent game and adapted well to the issues from the first meeting. Let's take a look back at the contest.
