Virginia Continues Busy Schedule

UVa Athletics Media Relations, Official Release

The Virginia men's basketball team continues its busy stretch of games on Monday (Feb. 15) when the Cavaliers play an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Maryland.

Monday's game is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. It will be available live on the Internet at ESPN360.com and will be broadcast by the Virginia Sports Radio Network.

The game at Maryland is the second of a stretch of three games in five days for Virginia. The Cavaliers began that stretch with a 61-55 loss at Virginia Tech Saturday night (Feb. 13). Monday's game at Maryland is the game postponed from Feb. 10 because of unprecedented winter weather conditions and historic snow accumulations in the College Park, Md., area.

UVa enters Monday's game with an overall record of 14-8 and a 5-4 record in the ACC. The Cavaliers have lost their last two games.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

I posted the "2011 Class Needs: Offense" piece last Thursday. By position, I broke down which positions new coach Mike London and staff are likely to focus on in the 2011 class. Here is a sample from that article ...

    WR

    2011 Roster Projection - 8

    - Kris Burd, Senior; Jared Green, Senior

    - Javaris Brown, Junior; Quintin Hunter, Junior; Tim Smith, Junior

    - Kevin Royal, Sophomore; Bobby Smith, Sophomore

    - EJ Scott, R/S Freshman or Sophomore

Virginia has a nice group of young prospects in the program and is already on the board in 2011 with a commitment from Independence (Charlotte, N.C.) speedster Adrian Gamble, but I look for the staff to try and add at least another receiver in the class. Gamble is a nice way to start the class, though.

Dominique Terrell, an outstanding athlete, could be a big-time playmaker for London and company ... or anybody else for that matter. There is top competition, but London has made it known how highly he thinks of the Osbourn Park (Manassas, VA) star. Other prospects to watch out for include Oscar Smith's (Chesapeake, VA) Quinta Funderburke (no offer) and Gilman's (Baltimore, MD) Darius Jennings (reported offer).

The "Defense" piece likely will be posted on Monday evening. Defensive line, linebacker, defensive back ... there are needs in all three areas in 2011, but we'll break down each position and take a look at the early targets in all areas.

Also on Monday, check out a feature profile on Green Run (Virginia Beach, VA) defensive tackle David Dean. A 2009 first-team all-Tidewater selection, Dean received an offer from Virginia earlier this month. The 6-2, 285-pound junior has three official offers in total now. He discusses the offers, favorites and when he may be ready to make a decision.

Dean plans to visit Virginia for a junior day on March 6. We'll work to confirm other names for the event in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for more info there.

Also this week, we'll check in with FUMA head coach John Shuman for the latest on Morgan Moses' academic situation. And I hope to reach DeMatha head coach Bill McGregor for the latest on his junior class and the Kyrrel Latimer situation.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Terrell A Big-Time Athlete
College coaches from all across the country are interested in the speed and quickness of 5-10, 165-pound Osbourn Park (Manassas, VA) junior Dominique Terrell. Coaches differ in terms of how they would like to use Terrell, who has big-time potential on offense, defense and special teams.

2011 Class Needs: Offense
Image: Mike LondonWith 2010 recruiting complete, the Virginia staff now fully turns its attention to the 2011 class. UVa is already off and running with three verbal commitments including WR Adrian Gamble, LB/S Matt Bailey and S Kyrrel Latimer. What other positions may the staff focus on in 2011? In this piece we examine the possible needs on offense, breaking everything down by position. On Monday, we'll take a look at the defensive side of the ball.

Slotting The 2010 Class
Image: Mike LondonSigning Day has come and gone. Next on the calendar is my favorite holiday: Slotting Day. (Can't find it on your calendar? Maybe we can get Wahoo Bill to write it in on one of his.) This year's recruiting class is a particularly difficult one to slot because we don't know how Mike London and his new staff will adjust the roster for depth at certain positions. So for now, I will just look to slot the incoming class based on the positions that I believe are the best fits for their respective skill sets, the depth chart notwithstanding.

Blog Banter: Men's Lacrosse Q&A

By Blair Capps

Last week, some of you posted questions for coach Dom Starsia and the men's lacrosse team. After several re-schedules, cancellations, and one trek through the snow, I finally have your answers.

HoozZAt asked : "Very young attack. Do you anticipate running an "attack by committee", with 3-4 players rotating through 2 spots (I'm assuming Stanwick will be always on the field) throughout the season or would you prefer to settle on a more regular line-up as the season progresses?"

Dom Starsia: "I think we're clearly going to be looking at a work in progress for a while [so] I would describe the situation as fluid especially early in the season. Maybe not in too much of a guarded way, I'm confident that we're going to get better as the season goes on. We have some young guys that have some work to do and it's going to take a little bit of time for that to come together as much as we would like it to. So clearly early in the season we're going to run some people through and let things kind of play out and it will probably take shape as the season goes on."

HoozZat also asked: "How have some of the highly hyped freshmen acclimated to the D1 level of play based on practice/scrimmages?"

Starsia: "I think all the attackmen are sort of in play and doing a nice job. Harry Prevas on defense has been a surprise, but freshman middie Chris LaPierre is going to do a little bit of everything for us. We've asked a lot of him and just in what we've done so far, and he seems up to the task in every situation. I think the entire team has some confidence that he's going to make plays for us."

1moreUVAfan: "I'd like to ask Captain Ken Clausen if the defense is going to be more physical this year. I believe that is our key to winning a [National Championship]."

Ken Clausen: "I've heard about people commenting on that. I think we have a more physical unit than we've had in the past. We want to play that way, we want to defend Adam better. If teams are going to force it inside, we're going to make them pay for it. It's been a focus to be more physical. It's something we have been working on a great deal. Having someone like Bray [Malphrus] playing midfield for us, he brings a big physical side to that. Matt Lovejoy brings a big physical presence as well."

laxhoos, I asked your question about rides and recovering. I don't want to say that Coach Starsia "sidestepped" the question, but he ended up telling me a lot about the depth at midfield instead.

Starsia: "I think midfield is one of the positions we are the deepest and the most experienced. Right now, especially, it's the midfield that drives this team. I think we can get the ball quickly from defense to offense. I also think we should be very good getting back on defense."

wahoowa9, look for the answer to your question in my season preview on the EDGE.

Thanks for your questions everyone! Get excited for the Georgetown scrimmage this Saturday!

  • Unfinished Business - 2010 Men's Lacrosse Season Outlook: Boasting eight NCAA Final Four appearances in the past 11 seasons, including two straight, reflects the elevated measure of the team's annual goals and the narrow perspective that defines success. There is an acute feeling of unfinished business going in to the 2010 season and a heightened sense of urgency for a senior class searching for its first national championship.
  • Clausen Named as a Candidate for the 2010 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award: Virginia men's lacrosse player Ken Clausen has been recognized as one of 20 NCAA men's lacrosse student-athletes who excel both on and off the field and were tabbed as candidates for the 2010 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. Virginia (16-5, 3-1 ACC) won 38-3 Friday at Duke - its largest margin of victory in an ACC dual since Jan. 21, 1984 (44-3 vs. Georgia Tech). UVa topped that with its 39-point win Saturday.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Football recruiting ...

Once again, Virginia's June Elite Junior Day was a big success. This time around, head coach Al Groh and company reeled in four commitments, doubling their 2008 class total to eight commitments. The newest additions to the class include ...

Stratford (CT) RB Torrey Mack
DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD) CB/WR Rodney McLeod
Hackensack (N.J.) ATH Ausar Walcott
Friendly (Fort Washington, MD) DB Devin Wallace

The 6-0, 190-pound Mack rushed for close to 1,700 yards and 21 touchdowns in his junior season. A speedy back, he has been timed in the 40 at 4.48 seconds.

McLeod, a 5-10, 180-pound prospect, has run in the 10.9 range in the 100 meters and also claims 40-yard dash times in the 4.4s. A very good overall athlete, he also performs well in the long jump in track and field. He plays cornerback and wide receiver for one of the top high school football programs in the state of Maryland and feels like he will end up at cornerback at UVa.

The 6-3, 210-pound Walcott is a versatile player with very good all-around athleticism. He likely projects as a safety or outside linebacker at Virginia.

Wallace, a 5-11, 200-pound prospect, plays safety for Friendly High School but is being recruited by Virginia as a cornerback. He has good speed and is a physical specimen according to Friendly assistant coach Marcus Berry.

Stay tuned throughout the week as we follow up with more prospects who made the trip to Charlottesville last Saturday. Today, we will produce updates on top Eleanor Roosevelt (Greenbelt, MD) safety recruit Okechuckwu Okoroha and UVa tight end commit Colter Phillips. Okoroha is considering Virginia as well as -15 other Division 1A programs that have extended official offers.

Hoos Falter Late Again Against VT
Image: Sylven LandesbergIt's beginning to become something of a pattern. On the road against Virginia Tech, the Virginia men's basketball team - already the losers of five games by five points or less - dropped yet another tight contest in which it struggled to score down the stretch. Leading by three with two minutes remaining, the Hoos went cold as the Hokies reeled off eight unanswered points. That spurt propelled Virginia Tech to a 61-55 victory and a sweep of the season series with Virginia.

Hoos Top Alabama In Opener
After the Virginia men's tennis team lost its first regular season match in nearly three years last Saturday against Kentucky, many followers may have wondered how the squad would bounce back. Cavalier coach Brian Boland, however, ensured reporters Thursday that his team would be fine, even as he completely revamped his doubles line-up for Virginia's opening-round match of the ITA National Team Indoors tournament. The Cavaliers were more than fine - they were utterly dominant in a 4-0 win against Alabama.

Host Hoos Seek Third Straight Indoors Title
Virginia has the honor of hosting the National Team Indoors tournament - which annually features the top 16 teams in the nation - for the first time in school history. The Hoos took home the last two titles in Seattle in 2008 and Chicago in 2009; with a tournament title in Charlottesville, the No. 2 seed Cavaliers would three-peat for the first time since Stanford took home three titles in a row in the mid-1970s. The tournament features eight matches from Friday-Sunday and the final on Monday at noon, all at the Boar's Head Sports Club.

Breaking Down The N.C. State Win
Image: Jerome MeyinsseFollowing a performance for the ages in Chapel Hill, UVa returned to the John Paul Jones Arena for a rematch with N.C. State. While the UNC game was an exhibition for the offense, the second half of the State game was a defensive showcase by the Cavaliers. The game could have been dangerous - State had kept the first contest close and had the inside presence to cause UVa some trouble but Virginia was up to the challenge and dominated the last 20 minutes to come away with a comfortable 59-47 victory.

Starsia's Squad Gears Up For Season
Image: Steele StanwickThe winter weather in Charlottesville makes it kind of hard to believe, but the Virginia men's lacrosse team is hard at work preparing for its season opener at Drexel on Feb. 20. The Cavaliers are ranked a preseason No. 3 in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse and Lacrosse Magazine polls. This time last year, Virginia was ranked No. 1, and a heavy favorite to capture a national title. With several key departures, coach Dom Starsia's team has some big shoes to fill across the field, and a whole host of young talent is ready to uphold Virginia's fine lacrosse tradition.

Lazor Brings Excitement To OC Role
Image: Bill LazorNew Virginia offensive coordinator Bill Lazor's play-calling resume is rather thin. Another way to get a job, however, is with good recommendations, and that may be the biggest reason for Lazor's hiring as UVa's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the age of 37. Lazor, who was announced as the new offensive coordinator on Jan. 28, arrives in Charlottesville with endorsements from former employers Joe Gibbs, Dan Reeves, and Mike Holmgren, among others, according to multiple reports.

Schaub's Success At QB Continues
Image: Matt SchaubMatt Schaub is one of the greatest quarterbacks ever to play for the University of Virginia. He holds nearly every passing record at UVa and is beginning to make his mark in the NFL as well. TheSabre.com caught up with Matt to discuss a range of topics including his time in the NFL as well as at UVa, Virginia's recent coaching situation, and a few other odds and ends.

Breaking Down The UNC Win
After back-to-back ACC losses, Virginia bounced back in a big way on the road at North Carolina to close out the January schedule. How did the Hoos dominate - yes, dominate - in the Dean Smith Center? Let's take a look at the Cavaliers' game plan and execution in the breakdown of that 75-60 win.

Photo Gallery: UVa 59, NCSU 47
Image: Jerome MeyinsseVirginia picked up another ACC win when it knocked off N.C. State, 59-47. That gave the Hoos the season sweep of the Wolfpack. Check out 88 images from the victory in the John Paul Jones Arena, including photos of senior post player Jerome Meyinsse, Mike Scott, Mustapha Farrakhan and more!
