A Tribute To "Bullet" Bill

Bill Dudley, former Virginia and NFL football star, died last week at the age of 88. Dudley had a stroke and was admitted to Lynchburg General Hospital before passing away.

At UVa, "Bullet" Bill Dudley had a standout career. In his senior season, he contributed to 206 of the team's 279 points and the Hoos finished 8-1. Dudley was named an All-American and winner of the Maxwell Award (given to the nation's top player); he also placed fifth in the vote for the Heisman Trophy.

Dudley was the Pittsburgh Steelers' top draft choice in 1942, the 1946 NFL MVP, and a four-time All-Pro selection.

He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame (1956) and the Pro Football Hall of Fame (1966).

The Dudley Award, given to the state of Virginia's top college player of the year, started in 1990 with The Downtown Club of Richmond and was named for Dudley.

The Sabre set up a tribute page to "Bullet" Bill Dudley where you can read some of the stories last week and view photos and videos we've tracked down of the Cavalier star. Check it out.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD) Kyrrel Latimer did not sign a letter of intent, but he remains committed to the Cavaliers. The 5-11, 190-pound safety prospect likely will attend prep school and sign with Virginia in February of 2011. Latimer's situation was the only Signing Day surprise for Virginia, which signed 17 players last Wednesday.

Massive offensive tackle Morgan Moses is one of the 17 signees. The 6-6, 336-pound prospect re-signed with the Cavaliers after showing interest in Florida, LSU, Ohio State and South Carolina. Moses, who signed with Virginia last February but failed to qualify, will return to Fork Union Military Academy this week in hopes of attaining the necessary qualifying standards.

Be sure to check out last week's EDGE analysis on the class. On Monday, we'll take a look at the other classes in the ACC with the ACC Sports Journal's Jim Young. And, early this week, don't miss JHoo's take on where each prospect will eventually play for the Cavaliers. Here's a teaser section from JHoo's write-up ...

Ryan Cobb - Fullback. Cobb is one of the harder slotting decisions for me with linebacker being an obvious spot for him (and one that certainly would not upset me given what Cobb showed at the position for a quality high school program). But new offensive coordinator Bill Lazor will want a fullback, too, and Cobb being on offense allows him to be tried in an H-back role - something that I think may fit him well - as well being used as a traditional fullback. So think of slotting Cobb at fullback as getting two for one.

2010 recruiting has finished, so it's time to officially look ahead to 2011. TheSabre.com will take a closer look at Virginia's 2011 class, including which need areas Coach London might look to address, which prospects have been offered, and more. TheSabre.com will also release its early in-state Top 10 for the 2011 class.

Reflections And Analysis On The 2010 Class

2010 Class: The Players
Image: Mike London"It was to the great accomplishments of Anthony Poindexter and Bob Price to keep these commitments alive," London said in his introductory statement at today's Signing Day press conference. Indeed, helped by the efforts of Poindexter and Price, Virginia was able to keep its class together in the midst of a coaching change. As a result, new head coach Mike London had a solid foundation from which to build, ending up with a class of 17 prospects.

2010 Virginia Football Schedule Announced

UVa Athletics Media Relations, Official Release

The Atlantic Coast Conference released the 2010 football schedules for the league's 12 schools. Virginia's slate features 12 regular season games, including seven home contests. Starting times for all games will be announced at a later date.

First-year coach Mike London makes his debut when Virginia kicks off its campaign at home against Richmond on Sept. 4. The game will mark the 30th meeting between the Spiders and Cavaliers in a series that began in 1893. In the last meeting between the teams, the Cavaliers defeated Richmond 16-0 in 2008 at Scott Stadium when London was the Spiders' head coach.

The Cavaliers will open up the road portion of the schedule with their first-ever game in the state of California at USC on Sept. 11. The contest marks the first time UVa has played a game on the West Coast in exactly 34 years, celebrating the anniversary when the Cavaliers traveled to Seattle to play Washington on Sept. 11, 1976. The contest serves as a return game from the Trojans' 2008 visit to Scott Stadium and will be the program's third all-time contest against a Pacific-10 Conference member.

Virginia opens up ACC play on Oct. 2 when Florida State comes to Scott Stadium. The contest marks the 16th all-time meeting between the Cavaliers and Seminoles and the first since 2006. Led by first-year coach Jimbo Fisher, Florida State is coming off a 7-6 campaign in 2009 and a 33-21 victory over No. 16 West Virginia in the Gator Bowl. The last time the Seminoles came to Charlottesville in 2005, UVa topped No. 4 Florida State 26-21.

The Cavaliers wrap up the 2010 regular season in Blacksburg on Nov. 27 when they travel to Virginia Tech in the annual Commonwealth Cup contest.

Football season ticket holders from 2009 will receive renewal application information in mid-March. The season ticket order and seating priority deadline will be April 30. New buyers may also order starting mid-March and should likewise adhere to the April 30 deadline to maximize seating priority.

Blog Banter: Sidney Lowe On The Hoos

By Kris Wright

N.C. State Sidney Lowe shared the following thoughts after the game with UVa on Wednesday night. The Hoos won 59-47 to sweep the season series with the Wolfpack.

"I absolutely think that their win against us in the first game of ACC play on the road gave them confidence. Any time you win on the road it should give you confidence. They have the mental toughness, discipline and desire to win. They play with intensity, they don't make a lot of mistakes and are physically tough. They've had some great wins. Like I said, anytime you have a player [like Sylven Landesberg] that can do the things he can do with shooters all around him, it makes it tough. I also think that Mike Scott doesn't look like a physical presence but he's aggressive and active. He's going to bang you and push you and hold you but I mean that in a good way - I wish my guys would do more of it. They all play well together. They play with a swagger and an intensity that you like."

Roger Mason Jr. will not return to UVa

Virginia learned this week that rising senior guard Roger Mason, Jr. has elected to stick with his decision to go to the NBA and not return for his final year at UVa.

Mason was Virginia's top scoring threat from the perimeter during the 2001-02 season, averaging 19 points per game. Mason also led the team with four assists per game and shot a remarkable 88 percent from the free throw line. A natural two-guard, Mason was forced to play out of position at point guard for most of the season with the departure of Donald Hand to graduation and the injury to Majestic Mapp.

Cavs Suffer Second OT Loss
Image: Mike ScottThe crowd of 5,988 - which included a student section nearly filled to capacity - proved that they were desperate for a win against Wake Forest; the arena had scarcely been louder with twice the turnout. And had Virginia emerged with a victory, the vocal fans doubtless would have been one of the reasons. Though the fans certainly got their money's worth in a low-scoring yet thrilling affair, Virginia and its loyal core of fans came up empty. After leading for the majority of regulation, the Cavaliers lost their second consecutive overtime contest at home, falling 64-61 to the Demon Deacons in a game that featured stellar execution of the Pack-Line defense from both sides.

Rebounding Edge Lifts Wake Past UVa
When comparing the Virginia-Wake Forest match-up, a considerable advantage appears on paper - a clear mismatch on the front line for the Demon Deacons where a steady stream of tall and athletic players reside. In two contests this season, the apparent edge materialized on the court as well; on Saturday, the visiting Deacs again dominated the rebounding category to squeeze past UVa 64-61 in overtime.

Breaking Down The VT Loss
In the past week, Virginia recorded wins against UNC and N.C. State with a loss to Virginia Tech. With a snowy weekend on the horizon for the East Coast, this looks like a great time to take a look at those games. Unfortunately for Hoo fans, first up on the analysis block is the overtime loss to the Hokies.

Farrakhan Finds Stride Against Pack
Image: Mustafa FarrakhanThe Virginia men's basketball team had the day off on Monday. The players had the chance to kick back and relax other than class. Mustapha Farrakhan and Jeff Jones spent their day off shooting jumpers in the John Paul Jones Arena instead. The diligence paid off for Farrakhan, who scored 11 points, including 9 in 3 minutes, on Wednesday night to help the Cavaliers sweep the Wolfpack.

Hoos Soar Over State
Image: Jerome MeyinsseThe first three-quarters of the Virginia men's basketball team's game against N.C. State on Wednesday night was not a pretty affair. The pace was slow, and neither team could find an offensive rhythm as the referees called nearly every little push here or hold there. One fan posted on the In-Game Chat board, "This game is as fun as Mother's Day at an orphanage." Then, at the 6:57 mark of the second half, Mustapha Farrakhan brought the house down - and nearly the rim. After that, the modest crowd of 10,092 finally came to life and so did the Cavaliers as they went on to pull away to a 59-47 victory.

Moore Hopes To Help UVa Find More Success
Image: Shawn MooreWhen Shawn Moore decided to join the staff of new football coach Mike London, most Cavalier fans immediately felt a sense of excitement. At the very least, one of the program's most celebrated players was coming home to provide an immediate link to the success of the past. On the potential front, Moore could develop into a dynamic recruiter and key voice for the Hoos' coaching staff. One thing is certain, though. Moore is excited to be back in Charlottesville.

Restrepo's Road To UVa A Winding One
Image: Diego RestrepoAs Virginia goalkeeper Diego Restrepo sat in front of reporters on Dec. 13 after winning the College Cup Final in penalty kicks, he was asked what it felt like to be a National Champion. His response was perhaps a bit unexpected - he said that it had been a tough year. "A tough year?" one reporter inquired. "You just won a National Championship!" Indeed, it was an emotional moment for Restrepo, validating a career and a life that has consistently lacked stability and comfort.

Kris' Monday Musings: Better Basketball
Image: Jontel EvansThe Virginia men's basketball team matched its ACC win total from last season with a 75-60 victory at North Carolina on Sunday. At 4-2, the Cavaliers currently are in the thick of the conference race. That's with virtually the same cast of characters playing minutes this season, though you do have walk-on Will Sherrill logging more time and freshman Jontel Evans starting. So far, so good Coach Bennett.
