Wright Near All-Time Scoring Mark

The Virginia women's basketball team hosts Maryland on Monday night for a 7:30 p.m. ACC showdown. Hoo fans should journey over to the John Paul Jones Arena or tune in on ESPN2 to see the contest because senior guard Monica Wright is on the cusp of history.

Wright needs just 16 points against the Terps to take over the No. 1 career scoring spot for the Cavalier program. She is set to surpass Wahoo legend Dawn Staley in that category; Staley logged 2,135 points in her career. Jay Jenkins over at The Daily Progress profiled Wright's pursuit of the record in Monday's paper. Check it out.

VirginiaSports.com also has a preview article for the game with Maryland, which includes some information on Wright's run to the record. Here's an excerpt:

  • In the history of ACC women's basketball, Wright currently ranks No. 14 and is three points away from surpassing Monique Currie's career total of 2,122 points. Currie played at Duke from 2002-06.

Wright leads Virginia by averaging 20.9 points per game, which ranks second in the ACC and 10th in the nation. Her steals per game average, 4.0, ranks first in the league and second in the nation. As a team, Virginia averages 13.2 steals per game, which ranks seventh in the nation.

Good luck to Wright and the Cavaliers in the game with the Terps!

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Virginia guard recruit K.T. Harrell scored at least 40 points in a game for the third time this season, helping Brewbaker Magnet (Montgomery, AL) defeat Montgomery Academy 76-66. The 6-4, 205-pound senior called the game against Montgomery "one of the toughest challenges" of the season.

"Our team is doing really well," Harrell said. "We're 10-3. We're definitely playing like we pretty much expected. We have a lot of talent on our team and we've played together."

Harrell continues to establish himself as one of the top senior backcourt prospects in the country. Stay tuned for more from him later this week, when we post an EDGE update on one of UVa's top recruits in the 2010 class.

On the football recruiting front ...

Star 2009 offensive lineman signee Morgan Moses has yet to qualify and therefore will not enroll anywhere this month, PalmettoSports.com reported last week. The 6-7, 340-pound prospect signed with UVa in February of 2009 but failed to qualify and enrolled at Fork Union. We hope to have more on his status later this week.

Check out a feature profile on Hermitage (Richmond, VA) linebacker Curtis Grant on Monday. Grant, one of the top overall prospects in the state's 2011 class, has been offered by Mike London. He discusses London's impact and looks ahead to his recruitment.

New assistant coach Chip West notified Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach, VA) head coach Chris Scott that UVa was extending a scholarship offer to junior quarterback Lafonte Thourogood. The 6-2, 215-pound prospect has also received offers from East Carolina, North Carolina, N.C. State, Stanford, Tennessee, Virginia Tech and West Virginia.

One of the state's top athletes in the 2011 class, Thourogood is being pursued by all programs as a quarterback but has the athleticism to play other spots if necessary. Other top Ocean Lakes juniors include offensive linemen Josh Mann and Chaz Lowery and cornerback Reginald Owens.

We'll have more from Ocean Lakes later this week, and we'll also check in with Dinwiddie (VA) defensive lineman Corey Marshall. The 6-2, 260-pound junior prospect has been offered by Mike London and discusses what impact, if any, London has on his decision.

Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Checking In With UVa Recruit Joe Harris
Image: Joe HarrisLake Chelan (WA) guard Joe Harris earned Class A player of the year honors last season as a junior. So far this season, the 6-6, 200-pound senior has kept up his high level of play. Harris didn't match his 27.5-point per game average in last Thursday night's win over Adna, but he turned in an outstanding all around game - 17 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, four blocks and two steals - in the 79-41 win.

Shepherd Anxious To Prove Self At UVa
Gwynn Park (Brandywine, MD) running back Khalek Shepherd ended his high school football career in strong fashion, rushing for 1,348 yards and 21 touchdowns as a senior in 2009. The 5-8, 170-pound Virginia commitment now looks forward to an opportunity to showcase his abilities on the major FBS level.

Recruiting Notes: Strauss Looks Good to Go
Image: Michael StraussVirginia QB commitment Michael Strauss appears set to enroll at the University of Virginia this month. RB recruit KP Parks continues his gridiron success and we take a look at three potential 2010 class targets of head coach Mike London in this edition of "Notes."

London Names Reid DC, Associate Head Coach

UVa Athletics Media Relations, Official Release

Virginia head football coach Mike London announced Jim Reid has joined the Cavalier football coaching staff. He becomes the sixth member of London's staff and will serve as the defensive coordinator and associate head coach.

"I am very pleased to announce that Jim Reid will be the defensive coordinator here at Virginia," said London. "He is a former head coach and is a well respected person throughout the state of Virginia. Coach Reid brings passion and energy to the program, and is an excellent 'people person' guy. I feel confident our defensive players will come to love and respect him.

"In addition to his defensive coordinator position, Jim Reid will also serve as the associate head coach. My relationship with Coach Reid goes back to my early coaching career and I am excited about what he will bring to the entire organization."

London served as the recruiting coordinator and outside linebackers coach at Richmond during Reid's first two seasons as the Spiders head coach (1995-96).

"The first attraction to any job is who you work for," Reid said. "Coach London and I go back to when I first worked at Richmond. He was on my staff and did an unbelievable job of organization and of coaching the players and showing interest in their academics and did a marvelous job in recruiting with his high energy and his personality.

"I've been around the University of Virginia for a long time and I have an idea of what the University is about," said Reid. "Recruiting in-state, you see the type of special player that comes here for the great football experience and the great education Virginia offers. As a life-long football coach I believe in the principles and ideals of football. The University of Virginia stands out among the very best schools in the country at what football is meant to be. This is a challenge I wanted to accept. I am absolutely privileged to be a part of this staff."

Blog Banter: Shawn Moore Joining UVa Staff

Shawn MooreMultiple outlets are reporting and The Sabre has confirmed that Shawn Moore, former star quarterback at Virginia, is joining Mike London's football staff at UVa. Moore, of course, led one of the nation's top offensive attacks during his career and helped take the Cavaliers to the No. 1 ranking in the polls. After finishing at Virginia, he played in the NFL for the Broncos. Most recently, he's worked at St. Albans as a dean.

Moore, who is expected to coach either the quarterbacks or receivers pending further hires, had been a point of discussion on the EDGE (sub. required) this past week as murmurs begin to surface about him joining the Hoos as an assistant coach. Mikeysurf, one of The Sabre's long-time posters and respected voices, summed up why it would be a good move for the Cavaliers. Here's part of Mikeysurf's post:

I'm very cautious when it comes to taking risks with coaching hires. However, Shawn Moore is UVa football royalty - led our program to its only 10-win season, our first league title, only No. 1 ranking, only major bowl game, the highest Heisman Trophy finish of a UVa player in the last 50 years, etc. Whatever brand UVa football produced during its most successful period, Moore played the biggest role of any player.

If there is a former player deserving of a shot, it is Shawn. When I see UVa fans hand wringing over considering Shawn Moore for a coaching slot, it is quite frankly, surprising to me. Among UVa football alums, Shawn is "the man." His shadow still cast wide among former players and it would undoubtedly help reconnecting many of them to the program. The benefits of such should be obvious. ...

But of most importance, if Shawn joins the UVa staff, he would be a real asset in terms of recruiting the powerful Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) and the Interstate Athletic Conference (IAC). Having a coach who can recruit the power schools in the DC area is just as important has putting coaches on the squad that can hit the ground running in the 757. If we can establish a strong footprint in both locations, UVa football success will return. It's not rocket science!

Moore has joined the Sabre in the past as a guest for an "Ask The Experts" series. EDGE subscribers should check it out from the archives at this link! The Sabre also caught up with Moore this fall for a "Catching Up With ..." feature.

Hoos upset Maryland for second time this season

Virginia was on a slide of unimaginable proportions, losing seven straight, but pulled out of it when they defeated Maryland at home last Sunday in overtime, 80-78. The win gives UVa a winning regular season record and keeps their hopes alive for a berth in the upcoming NIT.

Seldom-used senior center Jason Rogers got his first start of his career and had everyone scratching their heads why he didn't get much playing time during his Virginia career. Rogers busted out of the gate early, blocking several shots, changing the direction of many others, snagging rebounds and contributing some points in the paint as well. While the Cavaliers struggled on offense and turned the ball over 21 times, Rogers' presence inside kept Maryland from getting into their offense. The defending national champion Terps shot a poor 38 percent from the field.

The Hoos can secure a place in this year's NIT if they can win against Duke tonight in the quarterfinal round of the ACC Tournament. UVa has never won a postseason game under Coach Pete Gillen, so a win tonight would be a positive step for this club.

Virginia will play Duke at 9:00 PM tonight. The game will be televised by the Jefferson-Raycom Sports Network. In Charlottesville, the game is scheduled to be shown on ESPN2, WDCA, WVIR and WTVR.

Hoos Rally To Down Pack
Image: Mike ScottOvercoming a 10-point second-half deficit. Taking care of the ball, knocking down free throws, and making the opponent earn points down the stretch. Getting the ball to Virginia's stars and having them convert. Winning the turnover and rebounding battles. Overall, taking a win on the road at a place Virginia had won only twice times in the previous 11 trips. Not a bad conference debut for Virginia coach Tony Bennett.

ACC Scouting Report: N.C. State
Image: Tony BennettThe Virginia men's basketball team opens ACC play on Saturday at noon at N.C. State. It's the first conference game in coach Tony Bennett's tenure. The Sabre has asked Cvillehoops13 to bring back scouting reports for ACC opponents so that you know the strengths, weaknesses, and potential gameplans for the Cavaliers to beat league teams. He gets things started with a look at the Wolfpack.

Zeglinski Draining 3's, Soaking Up Coaching
Image: Sammy ZeglinskiIn late October, several weeks before the men's basketball season started, Sammy Zeglinski stood courtside at the team's practice court in John Paul Jones Arena, unavailable to participate due to a sprained ankle. Standing next to him was Tony Bennett - the new Cavalier coach, and a four-year point guard with the Charlotte Hornets. Side-by-side, they observed five-on-five drills. Every so often, Bennett turned to Zeglinksi to offer a tidbit of advice, and the younger point guard soaked it in.

Hoos Win Despite 'Lackluster' Outing
Image: Mike ScottIf there was any non-conference opponent on Virginia's schedule that wasn't supposed to get even a whiff of an upset, it was Texas Pan-American, a school that sits fewer than 20 miles from the border into Mexico. The Broncs carried a 1-14 record going into their game against the Hoos, with the only win coming against Chattanooga. And so, even as the Cavaliers took home a 72-53 win to improve to 8-4 on the season, Virginia coach Tony Bennett had little positive to say about his team as it prepares for its upcoming conference opener this weekend.

In all, there are 49 images to get you ready for Tuesday night's contest with Texas-Pan American as the Hoos go for their fourth straight victory.

That will be Sylven Landesberg's first look at conference defenses this year, one season after being named the ACC Rookie of the Year. Is Landesberg, who struggled at times against some league teams as a freshman, ready for the challenge? This week's musings take a look at that and more.
