UNC-Wilmington Game Rescheduled

Official Release, UVa Athletics Media Relations

The Virginia men's basketball team's game with UNC Wilmington originally scheduled to be played on Dec. 19 has been rescheduled for Jan. 18 at John Paul Jones Arena. A starting time will not be set until after it's determined whether the game will be televised. Original tickets for the game, including Family Package tickets, will be valid.

The UNC Wilmington-Virginia game was postponed on Dec. 19 because of hazardous travel conditions caused by the recent heavy snowfall in the Charlottesville area.

"We appreciate the UNC Wilmington athletics administration and men's basketball staff as well as our men's basketball staff working to get this game rescheduled," Virginia Athletics Director Craig Littlepage said. "We look forward to the game being played on Jan. 18."

Virginia hosts Miami on Jan. 16 and plays at Wake Forest on Jan. 23. UNC Wilmington plays at Northeastern on Jan. 16 and at Georgia State on Jan. 20.

   Recruiting News

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

We hope to hear more from Fork Union Military Academy (VA) offensive tackle Morgan Moses on Monday. There has been no word on whether the 6-7, 340-pound prospect will qualify, as he is awaiting the results of his latest standardized test. Virginia remains strong in the race along with Florida, but the latest developments with head coach Urban Meyer likely can only help the Cavaliers. Other schools such as LSU and Ohio State have not been ruled out, either.

As soon as we gather anything new on the Moses front, we'll be sure to post it on the EDGE message board.

TheSabre.com caught up with Virginia quarterback commitment Michael Strauss on Sunday night. The 6-3, 215-pound Gulliver Prep (Miami, FL) standout continues to wait word on whether he'll be accepted for January enrollment. He says he has completed his application and is simply waiting for a decision.

Strauss has indicated before that he will sign with Virginia regardless of when he enrolls. Strauss, who passed for close to 2,800 yards and 28 touchdowns this season as a senior, committed to the Cavaliers on Mike London's first day as head coach. He chose Virginia over a greyshirt offer from Alabama and offers from Florida International and Tulane.

In other Virginia commitment news, Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA) linebacker Henry Coley earned Associated Press Group AAA First-Team All-State honors. And West Rowan (Mount Ulla, NC) running back Kevin Parks Jr. was named to the Charlotte Observer state top 25. Parks, who is North Carolina High School football's all-time leading rusher, also earned Shrine Bowl offensive MVP honors earlier this month.

In more football news, a large number of commitments are scheduled to be in Charlottesville on the weekend of Jan. 22. They will be making their official visits, and one uncommitted prospect expected to join them is 6-5, 285-pound Maury (Norfolk, VA) offensive lineman Stephen Lawe. Lawe received an offer from Mike London the week London took over as head coach. He is also considering offers from Memphis and ODU and interest from Virginia Tech.

For more on Lawe, check out last week's article on the EDGE.

Ross Metheny

The competition for Virginia's quarterback position likely will be open in the spring with last year's starter, Jameel Sewell, running out of eligibility. TheSabre.com caught up with Sherando (Stephens City, VA) head coach Bill Hall, who comments on Ross Metheny's ability to compete for the starting job next season. Metheny, a 4-year starter for the Warriors, will be a redshirt freshman for the Cavaliers next season.

Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Coley Pleased with London's Hiring
6-2, 220-pound linebacker prospect Henry Coley was recruited by the University of Richmond when Mike London was head coach. The Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA) star senior was not only familiar with Virginia's hire, but he was impressed as well.

Maury OL Lands Offer, Sets Visits
Maury (Norfolk, VA) senior Stephen Lawe has earned a scholarship offer from the University of Virginia and plans to make an official visit to Charlottesville on the weekend of January 22nd. The 6-4, 285-pound standout started at offensive tackle and defensive tackle this season, in what was only his second year on the varsity level. He earned several FBS scholarship offers as a result.

Blog Banter: A Bennett Thought On Sene

By Kris Wright

Cvillehoops13 and I have both commented recently on the Hoos' struggles defending on-ball screens. Essentially, several players are over-playing the dribbler as the screener's defender. As a follow-up to those discussions, here's a thought from UVa coach Tony Bennett on Assane Sene, who started for the first time this season and played 28 minutes in the win over NJIT.

"He had probably his best practice of the year over the break where he really scored well, was catching everything," Bennett said. "He guards ball screens pretty well. A lot of teams look at your five man and they'll ball screen him a lot and he's been real good defensively with that."

As the season moves along, Sene's ability to continue to grasp some of the defensive nuances that Coach Bennett prefers could be a key to his playing time and the team's competitiveness in ACC play.

Appelt wins Tewaaraton Trophy

Amy Appelt is UVa's first female Tewaaraton recipient.
She led the nation in scoring. She led her team to the national championship. With those credentials, was there any doubt Amy Appelt would win the Tewaaraton Trophy?

Virginia's junior attacker claimed lacrosse's equivalent of the Heisman on Thursday night after putting together one of the best seasons in the history of women's lacrosse. She scored 90 goals and accumulated 121 points as the Cavaliers went 19-3, sweeping their final 10 games to win the ACC and NCAA titles.

Appelt became only the third player in history to record 90 goals in a season, and only the fourth to reach 120 points. She scored at least two goals in every game, notching a hat trick (three or more goals) in 20 of Virginia's 22 games.

Appelt also was named the Honda Sports Award recipient for lacrosse, the first Cavalier to earn that distinction. She is now a candidate for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the Honda-Broderick Cup, the top award for collegiate women athletes.

The Hoos dished out 22 assists on 30 field goals and held a 3-point shooting festival to boot in one of the most efficient offensive performances in recent seasons. In the end, UVa shot 50 percent and made 11 3-pointers in an 80-54 victory.

Hoos Knock Off NJIT
Image: Jontel EvansIt had been 21 days since Virginia fans had seen the men's basketball team in the John Paul Jones Arena. Two weeks since they had seen the Cavaliers period.
