This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

At the beginning of each month, TheSabre.com will release another edition of "Countdown to Signing Day," an in-depth, overall look at Virginia football's recruiting class. A new "Countdown" will be released later this week, so stay tuned for the latest on Al Groh's 2010 football recruiting class.

In the meantime, today you can check out the latest on 6'3", 220-pound outside linebacker target Jeremiah Attaochu. The Archbishop Carroll (Washington, D.C.) standout rising senior includes Virginia in the top group of schools he's considering. He attended Virginia's "Future Wahoo Day" and enjoyed the experience.

Illinois, Kansas State, Maryland, Minnesota, Syracuse and Virginia are among the programs that have officially offered Attaochu, a standout defensive end in high school. With his athletic ability, though, he projects as a linebacker by many schools on the next level. UVa likes him as an outside linebacker.

Currently, Virginia only has one outside linebacker commit in the 2010 class. That is 6'1", 250-pound Chris Brathwaite, who earned an offer from Al Groh after excelling at camp in June.

Another Cavaliers outside linebacker target, Kareem Martin, is fresh off a visit to Virginia Tech and plans to reveal a final five this week. The 6'6", 230-pound rising senior, one of the top defensive prospects out of North Carolina, hopes to commit somewhere by the end of the month.

The Roanoke Rapids star has received double-digits offers. He has visited Virginia twice this year and enjoyed both experiences, so there is a solid chance Virginia makes the initial cut. Clemson, Duke and Virginia Tech are other programs the big-time athlete has seemed particularly fond of, but we'll find out for sure this week.

Basketball recruiting-wise, the Joe Harris watch continues. Harris, a 6'6", 200-pound guard out of Lake Chelan (WA), may be closing in on a decision, so stay tuned this week to see if he does commit. UVa, Washington State, and perhaps Washington are the primary contenders here.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Profile: UVa QB Commit Tyler Brosius
Image: Tyler BrosiusHead coach Donnie Kiefer arrived at Tuscola High School (Waynesville, N.C.) in 2007. One year later, he guided the varsity football squad to an 11-2 record and a conference championship. The team was led that season by University of Virginia quarterback recruit Tyler Brosius, a rising senior prospect who has developed nicely throughout his high school career.

Andrew Tallman a Top Target for the Hoos
Boston College High (Boston, MA) rising senior Andrew Tallman, one of the fast rising prospects this spring, will be the third of three Tallman brothers to move on to play college football. The eldest brother played at Bucknell. Alan, who is a teacher and assistant football coach at BC High, played for New Hampshire. The latter, who Andrew currently resides with, has given his younger brother advice on the recruiting trail.

UVa's First 2011 Commit an Athletic, Speedy WR
Recruiting in the 2010 football recruiting class continues, but it's never too early to get a head start on the next class. The University of Virginia football program did just that earlier this week, securing a verbal commitment from 6-2, 180-pound rising junior wide receiver Adrian Gamble.

Hall As Holder Creates Options

Vic Hall

Virginia fans watched Vic Hall make a difference on special teams last season as a gunner on the punt coverage team. Hall, along with fellow defensive back Mike Brown, lined up on the edges and their speed upgraded that unit. The duo often sprinted downfield and disrupted the punt return game by arriving so soon - the punt returner didn't even have a chance to juke and run in many cases.

Hall may be able to make a similar impact on other special teams units this fall. The Gretna star is making more appearances on special teams this spring as a punt returner (competing for time) and as a holder (first string). That could give Hall an opportunity to showcase some of the high school heroics that earned him so many fans. The electric playmaker rolled up 13,770 career yards of offense at Gretna, breaking Ronald Curry's record. He passed for a state record 8,731 yards and 104 touchdowns in his career and rushed for 5,039 yards and 66 touchdowns. Hall's 170 total TDs rank second in Virginia high school history.

While Hall was the back-up holder last season, Groh said the coaches never really saw an opportunity to use him in games, mainly because it would set off the alarm for the opposing sideline. Plus, Groh said it would have been a one-time deal and that one special occasion never presented itself.

This season may be a different story.

"Now that Vic is there on an ongoing basis, clearly he's somebody we can utilize or he's a threat to be utilized at all times," Groh said.

Hall tossed a touchdown pass to Jeffrey Fitzgerald during spring drills last season. In other words, there are some wrinkles in the playbook.

JHoo's Summer Reading '09: Safeties
Image: Rodney McLeodFinally, we get to the end of summer and thus the end of the line for summer reading. So in honor of this being the concluding column, let me get right to the conclusion: I am pretty excited about the prospects for UVa at the safety position going into 2009. Are there questions? Sure ... but for all the questions, there is something about the talents at the position - and the attitudes - that really make me think things might click in a big way this year.

So Far, So Good For Bennett
Image: Tony BennettIt's been almost four months since Tony Bennett took the reins at Virginia. While Bennett has not coached nor won a single game in that time, he has methodically put together a strong first quarter for his first year on the job. In fact, I'm not sure Bennett could have crafted a better offseason than what he's done to date.
