This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

The NBAPA Top 100 Camp has come and gone, but we'll have many updates throughout the week on University of Virginia 2010 and 2011 class targets that were in Charlottesville last week. A handful of rising senior standouts planned to stay in Charlottesville for at least Sunday before heading home, giving the prospects a chance to meet with head coach Tony Bennett and company. They include ...

  • 6-9, 210-pound Palo Duro (Amarillo, TX) forward Michael Cobbins
  • 6-9, 225-pound Morse (San Diego, CA) forward James Johnson
  • 6-8, 190-pound Middlesex School (Concord, MA) Rod Odom
  • 6-8, 220-pound Nichols School (Buffalo, N.Y.) forward/center Will Regan
  • 6-4, 170-pound Greenfield (Wilson, N.C.) guard Brian Richardson

TheSabre.com will catch up with each of these prospects for further reports. Prior to Sunday, Cobbins and Johnson were the only two prospects to hold official offers from the new staff, but Regan, who has narrowed his list of schools to five, expected to score an offer from the staff.

EDGE subscribers can check out an initial update on Regan in last Friday's "NBAPA Day One" report. Also included in that feature is an update on Miller School (Charlottesville, VA) guard Mychal Parker, who is looking to narrow his list of schools to 10 on July 15. A heavy favorite under head coach Dave Leitao, Virginia is working to make Parker's initial cut.

New Trier (Winnetka, IL) guard Alex Rossi attended Virginia's Elite Camp as well last week, but the 6-4 rising senior did not leave Charlottesville with an offer from the staff. Rossi plans to decide by the end of the month, so he certainly will not wait to see if an offer comes from the Cavs.

Stay tuned for more from last week's events later today and throughout the week.

TheSabre.com will also continue its coverage of Virginia's Future Wahoo Day, as there are several prospects we hope to contact this week. Also, UVa's summer camp takes place this week, so we'll be sure to check in on any new prospects to jump on the radar. UVa hosted a 7-on-7 tournament and linemen camp on Saturday.

UVa football currently has five commitments for the 2010 class, including Tuscola (Waynesville, N.C.) quarterback Tyler Brosius, West Rowan (Mount Ulla, N.C.) running back Kevin Parks, Good Counsel (Wheaton, MD) wide receiver E.J. Scott, Don Bosco Prep (Wykoff, N.J.) linebacker Ryan Cobb and DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD) defensive back Kyrrel Latimer.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. To sign up for an Edge subscription, please check out the Sabre Edge Sign Up and Information Page. If you're already on board as an Edge subscriber, click the links below to catch up on recruiting.

Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

TheSabre.com's Pre-Summer Top 30
Image: Phillip SimsA class I consider to be one of the best in the state of Virginia's history, the 2009 class featured outstanding depth. The 2010 class doesn't measure up to last year's group in terms of depth, but there are high quality talents in the Top 30, including an especially large group of talented linemen.

NBAPA Top 100: Day One Updates
Image: Mychal ParkerA number of University of Virginia men's basketball targets are in Charlottesville participating in the NBAPA Top 100 Camp. One of the more familiar 2010 class targets to Cavalier fans is Miller School (Charlottesville, VA) guard Mychal Parker, and the 6-5 prospect updated his recruitment following Thursday's morning games. Also check out the latest on UVa 2010 targets Will Regan (F/C), Alex Rossi (G) and Ben Brust (G).

Quick Take: Tony Bennett Talks Recruiting
Image: Tony BennettUniversity of Virginia head coach Tony Bennett is the latest subject of "Quick Take." Coach Bennett, who has been the Cavaliers head man for over two months now, talks recruiting and specifically discusses his recruiting philosophy, what he looks for in each player he recruits, incoming freshman Jontel Evans and Tristan Spurlock, the NBAPA Top 100 Camp and more.

Track & Field, Cross Country Program Ranked Among Nation's Best

Virginia Athletics Media Relations
Official Release

Virginia's men's track and field and cross country program finished 11th in the final standings of the inaugural NCAA Division I John McDonnell Program of the Year Award, as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

The Cavaliers finished 14th at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships, before finishing tied for 47th at the indoor national meet and tied for 48th at the outdoor NCAA Championships, collecting 113 total points in the standings. Oregon, which won the cross country and indoor track and field men's national titles, finished with five points to win the inaugural John McDonnell Program of the Year Award, while Stanford finished runner-up with 21 points and Florida State was third with 32.5 points.

Virginia's men wrapped up the year with two Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, including its second-straight cross country title and first-ever outdoor title, while the Cavaliers finished in a program-best third place at the indoor meet. Four Cavaliers won individual conference titles throughout the year, including senior Ryan Foster - who earned the program it's first-ever individual cross country championship, sophomore Ryan Collins - who won the 5,000-meters indoors, sophomore Adams Abdulrazaaq - who claimed the program its first-ever 110m hurdles title, and senior Yemi Ayeni - who won his third-straight discus title outdoors. Head coach Jason Vigilante was named the ACC Coach of the Year for both cross country and outdoor track and field in just his first year at Virginia.

On the national scene, six Cavaliers earned All-America honors. Sophomore Emil Heineking earned his second-consecutive national honor, becoming Virginia's first-ever two-time All-American in cross country, while the Cavaliers' DMR team of freshman Lance Roller, sophomore Meikle Paschal, freshman Sintayehu Taye and senior Andrew Jesien broke the school record and earned All-America honors during the indoor season. Ayeni finished fourth at the outdoor championships to earn his third All-America distinction.

Ayeni also earned the program its first-ever NCAA East Region title, as he won the discus this year. Vigilante was named the NCAA Southeast Region Head Coach of the Year for leading the men's team to its best-ever finish, sixth-place, at the regional meet.

The John McDonnell Program of the Year Award is named after USTFCCCA Hall of Famer and former Arkansas head coach John McDonnell. McDonnell's Arkansas teams won a combined 40 National Championships and finished in the top ten in cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field in 24 of his 36 seasons in Fayetteville. Five of his teams won the NCAA Triple Crown.

The award is given annually to the most outstanding NCAA Division I men's cross country/track & field program. The award honors the institution that has achieved the most success in each academic year (spanning the cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field seasons) based on the institution's finish at the NCAA Division I Championships.

In order to be eligible for the award, teams must qualify for the NCAA Championships. Scoring is based on the team's finish at each NCAA Division I Championship in cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field (i.e. 1st = 1 point, 2nd = 2 points, 31st = 31 points) with the lowest total score for all three championships combined determining the award recipient.

Virginia and Florida State were the only two ACC programs in the top-16 of the final award standings.

  • Cavaliers' Record Season Comes to End in CWS Epic: Virginia's record-setting season came to an end Wednesday night as Arkansas scored a run in the 12th inning to eliminate the Cavaliers, 4-3, in the College World Series in front of 21,383 spectators at Rosenblatt Stadium. UVa finished its season with a 49-15-1 record, setting a school record for wins while making the program's first ever trip to the CWS.
  • Greenlief Wins Virginias Women's Stroke Play Title: For Oakton's Lauren Greenlief, the heartbreak of watching UVa's extra innings loss in this week's College World Series might now be a little easier to take. Winning a VSGA title while in the process of retooling one's swing will do that to a young golfer. The 18-year-old rising redshirt freshman at UVa shot a final round 1-under 70 to register a two-stroke victory at the 32nd Virginias Women's Stroke Play Championship. The only competitor in the field to deliver two subpar rounds over the three-day competition, Greenlief concluded the championship at 3-under 210 (72-68-70).
  • Incoming UVa Golfer Qualifies for U.S. Women's Open: Incoming Virginia freshman women's golfer Brittany Altomare has qualified for the 2009 U.S. Women's Open. The native of Shrewsbury, Mass. won the sectional qualifying tournament held at Neshanic Valley Golf Course in Neshanic Station, N.J. last Monday.
  • John Walker Named Assistant Lacrosse Coach: University of Virginia men's lacrosse coach Dom Starsia has announced the hiring of former Army attackman John Walker as an assistant coach on his staff. Walker replaces Hannon Wright who resigned following the season to join the Marine Corps as a judge advocate. "I am very pleased to announce John's hiring as an assistant coach," said Starsia. "From a comprehensive search process, John emerged dramatically from a deep pool of talented, familiar candidates. Known only by reputation beforehand, he impressed the committee with each contact. This is an impressive young man who will bring energy, personality and a fresh perspective to our program. He will be a strong role model and a positive influence on our players, on and off the field."
  • Somdev Devvarman Qualifies for Wimbledon Doubles: Former Cavalier tennis player Somdev Devvarman will make his Grand Slam debut after qualifying for the doubles main draw at Wimbledon. Devvarman teamed with Kevin Anderson to win two matches in the qualifying draw to advance to the main draw field of 64.
  • Anding and Smith Named to ACC All-Academic Teams: Junior Ayla Smith and freshman Kevin Anding have been named to the inaugural All-ACC Academic Indoor Track and Field Teams, the conference office announced Wednesday. Smith was among 43 student-athletes to be named to the first-ever women's team, while Anding was named to the first 41-member men's team.
  • Cavaliers Release 2009 Volleyball Schedule: Eight matches against 2008 NCAA Tournament participants and four pre-conference tournaments, including two at Memorial Gymnasium, highlight the 2009 Virginia volleyball schedule released last week. The schedule will feature 14 home matches, including contests against NCAA Tournament participants Clemson, Duke and North Carolina, and will provide numerous tests for the Cavaliers, as they look to use nine returners and the 15th-ranked recruiting class in the nation to improve on last season's 17-15 record .

  • Matt Ward Wins Tewaaraton Trophy: Virginia attackman Matt Ward was named the winner of the 2006 Tewaaraton Trophy, given annually to the top lacrosse player in the nation. A team captain for the second year in a row, he led the Cavaliers with 42 goals, 25 assists, and 67 points. This is the third consecutive year he led the team in goals and total points.
  • Three Cavaliers Selected in First Round of Major League Lacrosse Draft: Five members of the Virginia's national champion men's lacrosse team were selected in the 2006 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Collegiate Draft. Midfielder Kyle Dixon, attackman Matt Ward, and defenseman Michael Culver were among the first seven players selected in the first round. In Case You Missed It ...

Sabre articles since the last SabreMail

Cavaliers Exit In Frustrating Fashion
Image: Brian O'ConnorOMAHA - The Cavaliers were one strike away in the top of the ninth inning Wednesday night from prolonging a dream. And that's just the beginning. In one of the wildest finishes in College World Series history, the Cavaliers were eliminated from their first ever College World Series with a 4-3 loss. From the ninth to the 12th innings, Virginia stranded nine runners while loading the bases twice without scoring a run. At game's end, numerous Cavaliers - Franco Valdes and Andrew Carraway included - were in tears.

Leaning On O'Connor
Image: Brian O'ConnorIf anyone knows how this feels, it's Brian O'Connor. A 4-3 extra innings loss at the College World Series? Brutal in every way. In any way. And that's why Virginia - players, coaches, and fans alike - is lucky he's our coach.

JHoo's Summer Reading '09: Tweeners
Last week, I discussed the wide receivers. This week, I will discuss the guys that could have been listed as receivers ... but really cannot be listed as receivers ... but may well play like receivers ... except that they really aren't receivers ... except that we need receivers ... and they can contribute as receivers ... but ... and ... unless ... perhaps ... In other words, the tweeners.

Analyzing What Went Right With Arkansas Up Next
Bouncing back has been the Cavalier mantra all season. After a dismal performance Saturday night at the plate and on the mound at critical junctions in Virginia's loss to LSU, UVa found a way to bounce back against No. 2 national seed Cal State Fullerton to remain alive in the 2009 College World Series.

Big Fan Of Big Werm
Image: Keith WermanLet's see, he's around 5'8" with the initials KW. Is there any question who one of my favorite Virginia players has become during this run to the College World Series? Of course after another rock solid performance Monday on the big stage in Omaha, it's safe to say that Keith Werman is probably on a lot of people's favorites lists right about now.

UVa Stays Alive With First Ever CWS Win
Image: Andrew CarrawayOMAHA - Andrew Carraway is Virginia's only senior who contributes on a regular basis - in the regular season, it has been mainly as a starter. In the postseason, though, he has often assumed the role he had as a sophomore: middle relief. And, as was often the case two years ago when he was scored on in just seven of 22 appearances, Carraway has been nearly untouchable. He helped Virginia earn at least 48 more hours in Omaha during a 7-5 victory Monday.
