This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Stay tuned for a series of updates from this past weekend, which included the successful "Future Wahoo Day" on Saturday. EDGE subscribers can now read updates on most of the recruits that visited Charlottesville over the weekend by clicking on the EDGE message board. I'll have more updates on each of these prospects and more throughout the week.

The weekend went very well for Al Groh and company, who reeled in two commitments on Saturday and added another Sunday. As expected, Don Bosco Prep (Wykoff, N.J.) linebacker Ryan Cobb pledged to the Cavaliers on Saturday. The 6-1, 220-pound rising senior made no secret of his affection for UVa two weeks ago and followed through with a commitment. Cobb, a versatile and athletic prospect, projects as an inside linebacker.

Hopes were high that Good Counsel (Wheaton, MD) wide receiver E.J. Scott would commit as well. The 5-11, 175-pound prospect did just that, pledging to Al Groh on Saturday afternoon. A terrific athlete, Scott runs the 40 in less than 4.5 seconds, the 20-yard shuttle in less than 4.3 seconds and posts a 35-inch vertical leap. A big-time playmaker, he averaged close to 30 yards per catch last season as a junior.

UVa stayed in the WCAC conference for Sunday's recruit, scoring a commitment from 5-11, 192-pound defensive back Kyrrel Latimer. DeMatha head coach Bill McGregor has said that Latimer reminds him of current UVa standout and former Stag Rodney McLeod and believes the Hoos may have found a big-time sleeper. Latimer plays receiver, safety and punt and kick returner for the Stags; he initially is being pursued by the Cavs as a safety.

Virginia now has five commitments in the 2010 class. The second commit came the previous weekend, when 6-3, 230-pound quarterback Tyler Brosius committed to the Hoos following an unofficial visit. EDGE subscribers can check out last week's update on Brosius and we hope to reach Tyler for more comments this week.

In addition to the commitments, the weekend overall was very positive for the Virginia staff.

On the basketball front, head coach Tony Bennett will hold his first UVa Elite Camp today and tomorrow. We'll be sure to follow up with some of the participants this week and into the weekend, including talented New Trier (IL) shooting guard Alex Rossi. But the basketball recruiting action doesn't stop there. Stay tuned for a "Quick Take" feature with Virginia head coach Tony Bennett, who goes in-depth on recruiting, as well as more on the NBAPA Top 100 Camp, which comes to Charlottesville this week. TheSabre.com will have coverage of the NBAPA Top 100 Camp beginning Thursday, so stay tuned to the EDGE for updates on 2010 (and maybe 2011) recruits.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

UVa Coaches Make the Difference for Scott
Good Counsel (Wheaton, MD) rising senior E.J. Scott, one of three players to commit to Virginia this past weekend, has always thought highly of UVa. "Virginia has always been on top for me," said the 5-11, 175-pound wide receiver prospect. "They offered me real early. A lot of schools came later. I liked Virginia before I received any offers. I've always felt like it would be a good fit. They play in the ACC and I like that. I've just always felt like it fit. I visited other schools and Virginia was still the best fit."

DeMatha Standout Headed to Virginia
Virginia has scored its third commitment on the weekend and the fourth in a week's time. Today, 5-11, 192-pound DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD) defensive back Kyrrel Latimer pledged to the Hoos over an offer from New Mexico and interest from Maryland and Pitt, among others.

Don Bosco's Cobb Pledges to UVa
Image: Ryan CobbClick here to view the recruiting card of Ryan CobbThe University of Virginia has come away with at least one commitment from today's "Future Wahoo Day." As expected, 6-1, 220-pound linebacker prospect Ryan Cobb pledged today to head coach Al Groh and company. The Don Bosco Prep (Wykoff, N.J.) standout becomes the third recruit to commit to Virginia's 2010 class.

   News, Notes, and Fan Discussion

Message from President Casteen

From The Office Of The President

Dear fellow members of our University community:

For several months, the Rector and Visitors and I have discussed how best to manage my retirement from the position of President. The issues are complex, both because I have served longer than most presidents do and because the Board will eventually need also to find successors for several of our senior administrators and managers who have worked with me, some since as early as the late 1960s.

As a result of these discussions, and with full support for the Board as it prepares for and conducts the search for my successor, Betsy and I have decided, and I have informed the Rector and Vice Rector, that I will stand down at the end of July 2010, somewhat more than a year from now. I am now 65. When the time comes for me to go, I will be 66, and I will have served as president here for fully 20 years, and previously at Connecticut for five years -- a quarter century, all told.

These 19, soon to be 20, years feel today like a very short time. My work and friendships with the University's faculty and staff, students (and their parents), alumni, and other supporters are as energizing today as when I took on these duties in August of 1990. These years have been magical times for me -- years of supporting and admiring excellence in faculty work, of rediscovering the University's original mission as we have come to understand it for our time, and perhaps also for the next generation, of hard and exciting work full of satisfactions that have come of observing the maturation and then the adult successes of well over 100,000 new Wahoos, young and old.

It has been our privilege as a family to live in and watch our children grow and reach adulthood in what I have come to see as the grandest and happiest of American homes in the most exciting and inspirational of all American villages -- this one conceived as America's center for learning. Relationships with women and men who believe in and sustain our students and their University have been at the center of my and our lives. And the greatest of all these privileges has been planning and building what I believe is one of the world's great universities, a university that was in its beginning and is now one of our Republic's cornerstones.

I came here as a student in 1961 filled with awe that this majestic place would accept and teach me. Despite adult occupations that showed me other places and other forms of the opportunities that learning opens up, my thoughts and aspirations always returned to the Rotunda, the Lawn, the Library, to the sounds of students singing and laughing and chattering while walking along the Corner, across the Grounds toward libraries and dorms and up and down Rugby Road, of crowds at football and basketball (and suddenly now baseball!) games, to the calming murmurs that one hears in the reading rooms and lounges where faculty members and students carry out the work of learning -- a special pleasure that belongs to persons who lead their lives within the University.

To come here as president, to work these 20 years in good times and bad, to be surrounded by family and friends and many generous colleagues, to have a part in making our University the global force that it now is, to share this work and place with Betsy and our children -- these have been the substance and privileges of my life here. Ending this chapter of our lives is not an easy thing, and yet a time to step aside to make way for others comes for all of us, and to me. I am profoundly grateful for these years.

I look forward to this next year of work with the University's women and men, and to exchanging greetings with all who come to the alumni, parent, and other events that have been such agreeable parts of my life since 1990. Thank you for your many kindnesses during the last two decades, for your generosity to the University and to my family and me, and for your commitment to the well-being of the young women and men who come here to "drink the cup of knowledge and fraternize with us."

With you, I look forward to applauding and greeting the University's eighth president when she or he is selected, and then I shall look forward also to returning to the life and work of a faculty member.

John Casteen

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

UVa ended the week with a bang, getting a verbal commitment from 5-10, 195 pound William Campbell running back Cedric Peerman. Peerman becomes the second verbal commitment of the 2004 class, joining St. Anne's Belfield defensive tackle Chris Long. Both prospects are ranked in the top 10 overall in the state of Virginia, giving the Cavaliers a great start in in-state recruiting.

As a junior, Peerman rushed for 2,048 yards. He scored 50 total touchdowns. Peerman has the breakaway speed needed for Division I running backs and also possesses great hands, which are necessary to be a running back in Al Groh's system.

In Case You Missed It ...

Analyzing What Went Wrong With CSF Up Next
Image: Brian O'ConnorOne doesn't need to look far to figure out why the Cavaliers lost Saturday night to favorite LSU. Virginia coach Brian O'Connor said it succinctly and best, "It comes down to what we do. We didn't make the pitches when we needed to make them and we didn't get quite enough clutch hits."

UVa Drops CWS Opener To LSU
Image: Brian O'ConnorOMAHA - Maybe the performance of the Virginia pitching staff Saturday night can be attributed to nerves of a young group debuting at the College World Series. Or maybe after posting an absurd 1.13 ERA previously in the postseason, the Hoos' hurlers were due to get knocked around. Whatever the case may have been, when the Cavalier pitchers gave the Tigers an opportunity, they answered the challenge en route to a 9-5 win.

Missed Chances Cost Cavaliers
Image: Phil GosselinWhile Virginia's first ever game in the College World Series had some highlight moments - solo home runs, strikeouts, a brief lead - the short-term memories likely will be of the 'what might have been' variety. After all, the Cavaliers couldn't consistently come through with runners on base as LSU pulled out the 9-5 victory on Saturday night.

Q&A - Andrew Carraway, Robert Poutier
Image: Andrew CarrawayLast summer, Virginia baseball co-captains Andrew Carraway and Robert Poutier both elected to stay at UVa for one more year. This summer, their decision has proven to be a wise one. Carraway, a fourth year, and Poutier, a fifth year, are leading this year's team to Virginia's first ever appearance in the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. Each of the right-handed pitchers contributed valuable innings in the Super Regional series against Ole Miss this past weekend. The victories give the team 48 wins, the new UVa single-season record.

JHoo's Summer Reading '09: Receivers
Image: Jared GreenI am finally changing the line-up, folks. Every year during this "Summer Reading" series, it has been quarterbacks first, running backs second. This year, it was quarterbacks first but this time, the wide receivers are up next. Why? With the ball likely to be in the air quite a bit more for the Hoos next year, it just seems right to focus in on the receivers.

Best Seat In The House: O'Connor, Littlepage
Image: Brian O'ConnorThe Virginia baseball team takes flight for Omaha this afternoon, but coach Brian O'Connor caught up with fans and The Best Seat in the House before leaving Charlottesville for the College World Series. The show also caught up with UVa Athletics Director Craig Littlepage. Check out the FREE audio interviews! As always, The Sabre archives select Best Seat interviews for Cavalier fans - other recent updates include Debbie Ryan and Wendy Palmer as well as Jon Copper, Voice of the Cavaliers Dave Koehn, and more!
