Two Assistants Leave Women's Basketball Program

From UVa Athletics Media Relations' Official Releases

Jeff House and Curtis Loyd are leaving their positions as assistant coaches on the Virginia women's basketball staff. Head coach Debbie Ryan made the announcements over the weekend.

Loyd resigned to pursue other opportunities. Loyd has been a Virginia assistant for the last five years. He joined the UVa staff after six seasons as an assistant coach at Arizona.

"Curtis Loyd has helped us get to where we are today," Ryan said. "We are particularly thankful to him for his contributions in player development and strategies on the floor. We will miss him and wish him well for the future."

"I'd like to thank the University of Virginia, Debbie Ryan and the athletics administration for giving me the opportunity to work for such a prestigious program," Loyd said. "I have enjoyed my time here at the University and will greatly miss all of the things that make this program and University so unique. I'd especially like to thank the players, past and present, for their hard work and efforts. I wish them well in everything that they do both on and off the court."

House has been a Virginia assistant for the last four years. He joined the UVa staff after eight seasons in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). House was an assistant coach for one season with the Washington Mystics and spent seven seasons as a member of the New York Liberty staff.

"Jeff House has made significant contributions to our program, especially in the areas of recruiting and basketball strategy," Ryan said. "We are in a better place because of his tenure here and we will miss him."

"I am grateful for the wonderful opportunity afforded to me by the University's athletic department, and particularly by Debbie Ryan, Craig Littlepage and Jane Miller," House said. "Unfortunately, however, the time has come for me to move forward. A family emergency this past year presented difficult challenges. I leave at a time the program is in good condition, and I am extremely proud of its accomplishments during my tenure - returning to the NCAA Tournament with consecutive second round appearances and assembling the nation's third-ranked recruiting class will help continue the great legacy of this program. I will cherish fond memories of my time on Grounds, and will miss my colleagues, the student-athletes and their families, all of whom have played such a large role in my life and the lives of my family. I would also like to express my deep gratitude to Debbie Ryan, who has taught me so much about the world of women's college basketball."

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Spring practice is finished and the evaluation period is in high gear so this week we'll take a look at Virginia's overall needs for the 2010 football recruiting class. Al Groh and company currently have one commitment, 5-7, 190-pound West Rowan (Mount Ulla, NC) running back Kevin Parks, and we'll check in on him as well. Virginia likely would take another running back in this class, but we'll take a look at other needs the staff will try to fill before the February Signing Day rolls around.

As a junior last season, Parks rushed for 2,864 yards and 43 touchdowns in helping West Rowan to a Class 3-A State Championship. Making an early college decision enabled Parks to focus more on preparing for his senior season and helping his team reach another state title game.

Today, check out the EDGE for the latest on Good Counsel (Wheaton, MD) cornerback Louis Young. Young, a 6-0, 195-pound rising senior, committed early to Stanford but re-opened his recruitment. Virginia is one of about a dozen schools Young would like to visit before making a commitment, something he would like to do before the start of his senior season.

Virginia continues to court Good Counsel wide receiver E.J. Scott, who is considering offers from six other Division 1A programs as well. UVa is thought to be in good shape with Scott, who also would like to make a commitment before the start of his senior season.

Also this week, we'll check back in with Green Run (Virginia Beach, VA) defensive end/outside linebacker Jamal Wallace. Wallace, a 6-3, 210-pound prospect, attended the Nike Camp in Charlottesville last Sunday. He and his mother enjoyed what they saw and hoped to return soon. We'll check back in with Green Run head coach Shawn Wilson for the latest on his standout prospect, who already boasts an offer from Duke.

Basketball recruiting ...

TheSabre.com spoke with 2011 big man John Manning over the weekend so stay tuned for an EDGE article this week. The 6-11 center out of Chantilly High School (VA) averaged 13 points, 10 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game this past season. The rising junior standout is playing this summer with the Boo Williams AAU squad.

Manning, whose parents both attended UVa, says he has not received any offers to this point but is drawing ACC interest. Manning's AAU teammate, 6-5 rising senior guard Brian Richardson, was recently contacted by coach Tony Bennett and company. We hope to get back in touch with the Greenfield School (Wilson, N.C.) standout this week for the latest on his standing with the Cavaliers.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Top LB/DE Talks Nike Camp, UVa Visit
Image: Kareem MartinRoanoke Rapids (N.C.) defensive end Kareem Martin is one of the most athletic rising seniors in the Tar Heel state. Not only does he excel on the gridiron, but the 6-6, 230-pound prospect almost averaged a triple-double in basketball and is currently running track. Martin's athleticism was on display on Sunday at the Nike Training Camp in Charlottesville.

Collegiate QB Setting Camp Schedule
Collegiate (Richmond, VA) quarterback/athlete Jake McGee is certainly hoping to receive his first official scholarship offer soon, but for now he is also trying to determine which Division 1A programs are heavily interested. From there, he will figure out which camps he will attend this summer. So far, he knows two definitive camp destinations.

Issue No. 156 - Sept. 17, 2004

Brian Barthelmes
Brian Barthelmes is a big fan of TheSabre.com, a self-described Sabre junkie. That's one reason we like him. But there are better reasons.

Bart is also a helluva guy. This week Virginia's junior left guard was named to the 2004 American Football Coaches Association's Good Works Team. He was the only ACC player selected to the 11-man squad, chosen for their charitable contributions and service to the community.

Among the Cavaliers, Barthelmes stood out last year for his outgoing, upbeat personality and his long hair, which hung to his shoulders. No longer. In April he had his first haircut in 18 months and donated 10 inches of his once-shaggy mane to Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that gives wigs to children who have suffered long-term hair loss because of illness.

That's not all. Barthelmes also visits the UVa Children's Medical Center twice a month. It isn't required. He says he enjoys it. He also participated in the Little Siblings Program, similar to Big Brothers/Big Sisters, for a semester before his assigned sibling moved away. Back home in Ohio, he has been active in local organizations such as the Cleveland City Mission Outreach, Youth with a Mission Outreach and Youth for Christ Leadership.

Athletic ability was not a criterion for selection to the Good Works team, though Barthelmes has been part of a dominant offensive line for the Cavaliers. Neither was behavior on the field, which is probably a good thing. Because tomorrow when Virginia plays overmatched Akron, a team from his home state, don't expect Barthelmes to be feeling too charitable.

In Case You Missed It ...

Sabre articles since the last SabreMail

Hoos Slam Villanova
Image: Danny GladingFor most of April, Virginia had been lumbering through a T.S. Eliot style funk. A shaky start before rallying against North Carolina preceded a pair of Duke losses, which sandwiched a lackluster outing against Dartmouth. Apparently, the Cavaliers just needed May and the energy of the NCAA Tournament to snap them out of the fog. After all, UVa destroyed Villanova 18-6 in first round men's lacrosse action on Sunday at Klockner Stadium.

Duo Matches Record In Win Over Navy
Image: Houston BarrickA 30-win season for the third straight season, a doubles team matching a school record, and an NCAA Tournament win. Yes, Friday was a typical day at the office for the Virginia men's tennis team, which cruised past Navy 4-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Cavaliers paired the doubles point with singles wins from Sanam Singh, Michael Shabaz, and Drew Courtney to advance.

Williams: For A Limited Time Only?
Image: Coach Al GrohChange rarely occurs at breakneck pace, and it sure as heck doesn't like to set its watch to our timetable. The trusty adage "Rome wasn't built in a day" exists for a reason. It wasn't. And college football offenses usually require more than a few precious months to reinvent. That brings us to Virginia, which finds itself in a precarious, and potentially incorrigible, spot this season.

Q&A - Sylven Landesberg
Image: Sammy ZeglinskiVirginia's Sylven Landesberg had a rollercoaster first year with the Cavaliers - an explosive start, few ACC wins, ACC Rookie of the Year, and the departure of his coach Dave Leitao. Throw in a coaching search to bring in new coach Tony Bennett and there's plenty for Landesberg to talk about. Jed Williams caught up with the UVa standout for this Q&A session.

Boland's Team Eyes NCAA Run
Image: Michael ShabazAt this point last season, Virginia tennis coach Brian Boland was pretty confident. Entering Final Four play, his veteran nucleus surrounded by up-and-coming youngsters was a staggering 32-0, having ripped through opponents all season long. But the Hoos "little bit unlucky in the Final Four" and missed out on the title. Lesson learned. Entering the NCAA Tournament this weekend, Boland is plenty aware that anything can happen, even to the most talented of teams.

JHoo: 10 Things I Learned ... Spring 2009
Image: Jameel SewellThe Spring Game is in the rearview mirror ... and yet the start of the football season is not that far away, even less so when you think about the players still working out on a daily basis, the summer get-togethers starting right around the corner, and camp being just a matter of months away. But before we go forward, let's look back and see what - if anything - we learned this spring.
