More Hoos Drafted By NFL

Almost every spring, the Virginia football program witnesses several of its players join the pro football world as the NFL Draft takes place. 2009 is no exception. This past weekend, four Cavaliers were selected in the draft. Offensive tackle Eugene Monroe came off the board with the eighth overall pick when Jacksonville called his name. Linebacker Clint Sintim followed in the second round; the New York Giants picked him 45th overall. On Sunday, running back Cedric Peerman (Baltimore Ravens, sixth round) and tight end John Phillips (Dallas Cowboys, sixth round) also became draftees.

Of course, undrafted players can sign as free agents and a few Hoos have gone that route already. Wide receiver Kevin Ogletree, who left with one year of eligibility remaining, is also headed to Dallas while linebacker Antonio Appleby has settled in with New England. Defensive end Alex Field is joining Sintim with the Giants. For other unofficial free agent news, check out this Patriots' blog.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Spring Game ...

Virginia's Spring Game was successful in impressing recruits, so be sure to check out EDGE updates posted last week. Although there were no immediate commitments from the event, it was a success for the staff with several recruits at least.

Two junior offensive line targets prospects, Deep Run (Glen Allen, VA) tackle Conner Davis and Fork Union (VA) center prospect Russell Bodine, were at UVa last weekend and traveled to rival Virginia Tech this past weekend. TheSabre.com caught up with both prospects last weekend and this Sunday as well.

An article on Davis was posted Sunday night on the EDGE (the link is below). The race for the 6-5, 270-pound prospect could easily come down ultimately to the Cavaliers and Hokies, so check out where Davis stands right now. He is likely to make a commitment before his senior season and could do so soon after the Evaluation period, though there is no definitive timetable for the talented prospect.

UVa plans to host another junior day this Saturday, so stay tuned throughout the week for updates on which prospects may be in attendance. Last Friday on the EDGE, two articles were posted and both articles contain information on junior prospects that plan to attend Saturday's junior day.

On Sunday, the Nike Camp comes to Charlottesville and talented prospects are certain to be in attendance. We'll certainly follow up on this weekend's events throughout the weekend and into next week.

Prospects headed elsewhere ...

Former Virginia offensive line target Mark Shuman committed to Virginia Tech last Wednesday, while Rockbridge County (Lexington, VA) offensive guard prospect Caleb Farris committed to the Hokies on Saturday morning. Farris did not have an offer from the Cavaliers, but Shuman did. Shuman chose Tech over UVa and Tennessee.

Basketball ...

Stay tuned for more on the basketball recruiting front, as we'll follow up on prospects Coach Tony Bennett and company are pursuing. In what was surprising timing, John Marshall (Richmond, VA) forward Travis McKie verbally committed to Wake Forest last Wednesday. He had indicated just a day previously that he intended to wait at least until the summer. Virginia had just visited John Marshall on Friday and re-offered the 4-star junior.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

An In-State Battle for Davis?
Image: Conner DavisDeep Run (Glen Allen, VA) offensive tackle Conner Davis attended the University of Virginia's Spring Game last week, and yesterday the 6-5, 270-pound junior was in Blacksburg for Virginia Tech's Spring Game. Davis may very well end up deciding between the two in-state programs, so these past two visits certainly were very important.

Evans Reflects On Coaching Change, Decision
Image: Jontel EvansBethel (Hampton, VA) point guard Jontel "Bub" Evans and Word of Life (Springfield, VA) forward Tristan Spurlock decided last week that they would stick with the University of Virginia and new head coach Tony Bennett. Evans, a 5-11, 185-pound prospect who averaged 14 points, five assists and four rebounds per game as a senior, took some time to reflect on the Virginia coaching change and his ultimate decision.

Vote For Glading

Danny GladingVirginia senior Danny Glading has put together a fine career for the men's lacrosse program. Entering 2009, Glading had posted 160 career points (87 goals, 73 assists). Last season, he was one of only six players in the country with 30 goals and 30 assists. In three seasons on the team, Glading earned the ACC Rookie of the Year Award and back-to-back All-American honors (third team in 2007 and second team in 2008).

Glading is also the model student-athlete that University of Virginia fans love. An Economics major, he currently boasts a 3.4 GPA in the subject. Glading studied abroad in Spain last summer. Plus, his family has strong UVa ties - older brother Billy was an All-American midfielder on the Hoos' 2003 National Championship team.

Make sure to cast your vote for Glading in the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award poll (click here). Read more about why Glading is a top candidate for the award.

Torchia, Tight Ends Ready To Adapt
Image: Joe TorchiaWith the implementation of a new spread offense, Virginia's days of "Tight End U" might be coming to a rapid close. But you wouldn't know it from talking to junior Joe Torchia. The team-oriented Torchia remains ready to be a playmaker this season, no matter how his role has evolved.

New Offense? Spread Out, Move Fast, Make Plays
Image: Jameel SewellWhen Virginia hired Gregg Brandon this offseason as its offensive coordinator, the objective was to install a new spread system in Charlottesville and inject some much-needed excitement into the offense. Certainly there are questions on everyone's mind. What are some basic traits of this spread? What's different about this offense compared to last season's aborted attempt at spread sets? What types of plays are going to be used? The Sabre takes a look with five fast thoughts on the offense.

LB Corps To Feature New Faces
Image: Cam JohnsonWith all of the focus on the changes to the offense this spring, the defense hasn't gotten much attention. But the linebacker corps in particular is facing some major changes of its own. After losing three high-caliber players in Clint Sintim, Jon Copper and Antonio Appleby, there is as much uncertainty here as anywhere else on the field with unproven faces filling the spots.
