UVa Picks Up Pair Of ACC Titles

The Virginia men's tennis team, expectedly, and men's track and field team, unexpectedly, claimed ACC Championships over the weekend. Brian Boland's No. 1 ranked tennis team topped Wake Forest 4-0 on Sunday, while Jason Vigilante's track and field squad tied Florida State with 141 points.

For the men's tennis program, the win marks the third consecutive ACC Tournament title and the fifth in the past six years. With the victory, the Cavaliers have won 45 straight matches against ACC opponents. Dominic Inglot, who plays at the No. 1 singles spot for UVa, took home ACC Tournament MVP. The Cavaliers receive the ACC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament; the field of 64 will be announced on April 28.

"I am really proud of this championship," Boland said in a news release. "We lost three of the best players in the country last year in Somdev Devvarman, Treat Huey and Teddy Angelinos. It says a lot about the young men on this team that they were able to step up this season. They saw it as an opportunity to play higher in the line-up. They worked harder in the offseason and the results showed that. We have won five of the last six ACC Tournaments, but this one is really special."

The men's track and field program, meanwhile, recorded its best-ever finish and the first-ever men's conference title in an outdoor season. Sophomore Adams Abdulrazaaq won the ACC title in the 110m hurdles by running a personal-best time of 14:16 and senior All-American Yemi Ayeni captured his third-straight conference title in the discus with a throw of 189'7" to lead the Cavalier charge. In total, UVa posted 11 all-conference performances throughout the weekend.

"Our conference championship has a proud tradition of great performances and we're honored to be champions with such a tremendous program as Florida State," Vigilante said in a news release. "Our team competed with integrity and with heart, and I'm so proud to coach all of these young men. It's a great day for our University and for the track and field program."

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

The best news from this past week came from the men's basketball program, which retained both of its 2009 class recruits despite the coaching change. Attempts to reach Word of Life (Springfield, VA) 4-star forward Tristan Spurlock have been unsuccessful, and while we certainly hope to reach the talented senior soon, we were able to catch up with his counterpart in Virginia's 2009 class, point guard Jontel Evans.

Evans, a 5-11, 190-pound senior out of Bethel (Hampton, VA), says a meeting with Virginia head coach Tony Bennett and assistants Ritchie McKay and Ron Sanchez sealed his decision to stick with the Virginia Cavaliers.

"The whole meeting was good," Evans said. "Coach Bennett is a real, real nice guy. You can tell he is a real good person. I knew Coach McKay from Liberty and Coach Sanchez was cool, too. I felt comfortable with them."

Peninsula District Co-Player of the Year in 2008/2009, Evans discusses much more about new UVa head coach Tony Bennett. Stay tuned for more earlier in the week, when we release and EDGE article on Evans' decision. In addition, TheSabre.com hopes to have more from Tristan Spurlock as well as updates on 2010 targets Travis McKie, Mychal Parker and Brian Richardson.

McKie, a 6-6 forward out of John Marshall (Richmond, VA), expected to see Coach Bennett and assistant coach Jason Williford at a workout last Friday. Parker and Richardson were two top backcourt targets of the previous staff and both were high on Virginia prior to the coaching change. We'll check in on the latest with those prospects.

Spring Game ...

Top 2010 class targets did turn out for Virginia's Spring Game on Saturday, so stay tuned this week for reports on those visitors and more.

Today, check out an EDGE article on Deep Run (Glen Allen, VA) offensive tackle Conner Davis. We'll also have updates on Fork Union Military Academy offensive lineman Russell Bodine and Good Counsel (Wheaton, MD) wide receiverE.J. Scott, each of whom came away impressed by Saturday's event.

TheSabre.com will also have an article on 6-7, 345-pound Linganore (Frederick, MD) offensive lineman Robby Havenstein, who received an offer from the Cavaliers last week. Havenstein was informed of the offer while visiting UVa last Monday.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Davis Comments on Spring Game Visit
Image: Conner DavisDeep Run (Glen Allen, VA) offensive tackle Conner Davis will be able to more closely compare Virginia and Virginia Tech by next weekend. The 6-5, 270-pound junior attended the University of Virginia's Spring Game yesterday and he'll be in Blacksburg for Tech's Spring Game next Saturday.

Offer Profile: LB/DE Kareem Martin
Image: Kareem MartinPrior to the 2007 season, Roanoke Rapids (N.C.) head coach Russell Weinstein envisioned Kareem Martin as a wide receiver. It didn't take long for Martin to impress on the defensive side of the ball, though, and now the 6-6, 220-pound junior has become one of the top defensive prospects in the state of North Carolina's 2010 class.

UVa Contacts McKie
Image: Travis McKieJohn Marshall (Richmond, VA) standout junior forward Travis McKie has been in contact with UVa's new coaching staff, specifically new assistant coach Jason Williford. The 6-6, 190-pound prospect recalled a conversation with the newly appointed Coach Williford, who played high school basketball at John Marshall before moving on to the University of Virginia to play under then head coach Jeff Jones.

Vote For Glading

Danny GladingVirginia senior Danny Glading has put together a fine career for the men’s lacrosse program. Entering 2009, Glading had posted 160 career points (87 goals, 73 assists). Last season, he was one of only six players in the country with 30 goals and 30 assists. In three seasons on the team, Glading earned the ACC Rookie of the Year Award and back-to-back All-American honors (third team in 2007 and second team in 2008).

Glading is also the model student-athlete that University of Virginia fans love. An Economics major, he currently boasts a 3.4 GPA in the subject. Glading studied abroad in Spain last summer. Plus, his family has strong UVa ties - older brother Billy was an All-American midfielder on the Hoos’ 2003 National Championship team.

Make sure to cast your vote for Glading in the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award poll (click here). Read more about why Glading is a top candidate for the award.

UVa Announces Rock Weir Award Winners

Virginia Athletic Media Relations

Prior to the start of Saturday’s annual Spring Football scrimmage, Virginia coach Al Groh announced the 2009 recipients of the Rock Weir Awards representing the most improved players during spring drills. This year’s winners were sophomore cornerback Dom Joseph (Philadelphia, Pa.) and sophomore offensive tackle Lamar Milstead (Washington, D.C.).

Last season Joseph appeared in the first four games of the year and the finale against Virginia Tech. He missed seven games due to a shoulder injury. Joseph played primarily on the Cavalier special teams. His only appearance at cornerback was at Connecticut. He did not record any tackles during the season.

Milstead did not see any game time last season.

Football recruiting...

According to Mission Bay (San Diego, CA) assistant coach Rolando Garcia, Darren "DJ" Childs has signed and delivered his letter of intent to UVa. He is now officially the 23rd member of the 2005 recruiting class.

In addition to averaging close to 12 tackles as a senior last season, the 6-0, 224-pound Childs was a force on special teams. He blocked two kicks his senior year after blocking five kicks/punts in his junior season. We hope to get video on Darren very soon and will post highlights on his profile as soon as we do.

Notes: Milstead, Joseph Receive Rock Weir Award
Image: Cam JohnsonTwo sophomores that were prized recruits in the 2007 class of signees received the Rock Weir Award on Saturday. Lamar Milstead, a 6'5", 290-pound tackle, and Dom Joseph, a 6'1", 195-pound cornerback, picked up the most improved honors for their work through the spring. UVa coach Al Groh said both players had worked to earn a viable position on the depth chart heading into the fall.

Spring Game Provides Peek At Hoos
Image: Vic HallAll eyes were on Virginia’s newly installed spread offense at Saturday’s Spring Game, which officially wrapped up the end of spring practice. The game kicked off with a series of field goal attempts followed by an offense vs. defense scrimmage intermixed with punt team work. The offense vs. defense set-up provided a chance to gauge the entire depth chart in a stadium game-like situation, UVa coach Al Groh said.

Best Seat In The House: Spring Football 2009
Image: Coach Al GrohThe Virginia football team suits up on Saturday for the annual Spring Game, which will be the only time Cavalier fans can see the team in action this spring. To get you ready for the weekend, The Best Seat in the House - a Sabre audio partner - caught up with several Hoos to talk about spring practice, Saturday's game, a new offense, and more. Check out the FREE audio with Vic Hall, Jameel Sewell, Denzel Burrell, and coach Al Groh!

Chicago Hope? Kelly Capitalizes On Lax Chance
Image: Matt KellyIt took Dom Starsia five minutes to form an opinion on Matt Kelly. As snap decisions go, it was an incredibly good one. Starsia slipped into an All-Star Game at the end of Kelly's junior year, saw five minutes of lacrosse, and called the Chicago recruit the next day. In the nearly five years since that fateful day, Kelly has become the first Virginia lacrosse player from Illinois and a key piece of the puzzle on this year's 12-1 squad.

QBs Ready To Gauge Progress
Image: Vic HallThe open of spring practice this season represented a fresh start for the Cavaliers' three quarterback candidates. Marc Verica is searching for redemption on his performance late last season. Vic Hall is looking for his lost shot at playing quarterback in college. Jameel Sewell is back after being forced to take last season off due to academic reasons. And for the second year in a row, the identity of the starting quarterback is unknown as the conclusion of spring practice nears.
