Recruiting News | |||||
This Week In Recruiting Virginia had a huge weekend on the visit front. No prospect was bigger - literally and figuratively - than 6-7, 340-pound Meadowbrook (Richmond, VA) star Morgan Moses, who is one of the top offensive tackle prospects in the country. Moses, who has also taken official visits to North Carolina and West Virginia, made an official visit to UVa over the weekend. This was Virginia's chance to impress the U.S. Army All-American Bowl selection, who is also considering Alabama, Ohio State, Tennessee, and Virginia Tech. TheSabre.com will have more on the big-time prospect this week and possibly as early as today. Virginia certainly has a solid chance in this race, but we'll find out where the Cavaliers may stand following the weekend trip. Moses was not the only uncommitted prospect in Charlottesville this weekend. He was joined by 6-5, 285-pound Hun School (Princeton, N.J.) recruit Nolan MacMillan, who is also considering Boston College, Georgia Tech, and Iowa. MacMillan made official visits to Georgia Tech and Iowa prior to this weekend and we'll check in on his reaction to his time in Charlottesville. On the commitment front, most of Virginia's 2009 class was in town as well to make official visits. The list included New Jersey wide receiver Tyree Watkins, a 6-2, 185-pound prospect out of Camden High School. The weekend was huge for Watkins, who is also considering an official visit to Duke before Signing Day. Early indications are very positive when it comes to Watkins, but we will check in with the talented prospect to discover whether or not Virginia was able to ease any potential concerns. We will also check in with other commitments to discuss their experiences in Charlottesville. Other notes ... Lafayette (Williamsburg, VA) defensive end Will Hill enrolled at the University of Virginia last week. The 6-4, 260-pound prospect earned mid-year admission at UVa, choosing the Cavaliers over Maryland, Penn State, and Tennessee. Hill's scholarship spot could count toward the 2008 or the 2009 class. Also, former UVa linebacker target Luke Kuechly has committed to Boston College. The 6-3, 215-pound recruit chose the Eagles over Duke, Stanford, and Virginia.

Post of the Week Tennis season is ready to get rolling and a tennis message board post - see below - provides some great information on the men's team. Read the the entire thread here.
Subject: Men's team notes Treat Huey has been practicing with the team for a couple of week. He said he is going to Mexico on Wednesday to play singles qualifying for a Futures tournament there, along with doubles. He is debating how much singles to play vs. being a doubles specialist. Depends on whether he can get enough singles points to stop having to do qualifying, which would ease the schedule. He is also going to play some Davis Cup for the Philippines, where his parents are from and where he has dual citizenship. I think they play Hong Kong in the first round in their group this spring. So, the matches were: Houston Barrick vs. David Nguyen. Houston keeps getting better, much more power in his game than just last year, lots of fitness work. David has as much talent as anyone but has to catch up on strength training to avoid getting overpowered by these older guys who have been in the program longer. Houston won 6-2, 6-0, then the coaches told them to play another set because there was time, and David won that set 6-4. Drew Courtney vs. Santiago Villegas: First time I had seen our Colombian recruit. He is a good baseliner as you would expect, but also sneaks into the net a little more than you might expect, when the time is right. Very solid off the ground and on the return of serve. Had a real battle with Drew Courtney. Drew is much lighter and fitter than in the fall and won 6-4, 6-4. Michael Shabaz vs. Leif Sunderland: Michael looked good and won about 6-0,6-4. Leif did a good job holding serve in the second set. Not sure how intense Michael was after winning 6-0 in the first. Michael looks fit and good as we saw him this fall. Treat Huey vs. Steven Eelkman-Rooda: Steven has made amazing progress in just 5 months. Treat is fit and in form, but Steven had him 6-3, 2-0 before Treat made a comeback to win a tiebreaker and then a super-breaker. Steven has STILL not been cleared by the NCAA, but supposedly we are hopeful that it could happen as soon as this week. Not in time for William and Mary, but maybe in time for Illinois. Lee Singer vs. new guy from the Netherlands: The new guy is not cleared yet by the NCAA. He did not have his own rackets and did not like the tension on the racket he was given, so he was quite distracted. However, Lee was really hitting the ball. Just as with Houston, his progress and increase in power over the last two years have been impressive. Lee won about 6-3, 6-2 or 6-3, 6-3. He will be tough to keep out of the lineup. The Dutch guy has a big serve. He might have to redshirt if the NCAA takes as long as they did with Steven. Dom Inglot vs. Reese Milner: Dom's shoulder is 100% and he is fully fit and healthy for the first time since he has been here, according to Coach Boland. Reese has settled down emotionally on the court since the fall, gotten steadier and does not beat himself anymore. He put up a good fight but Dom won 6-4, 6-4. It was really encouraging to see how some of the guys have improved. I think it will be hard to keep Houston, Lee, and Steven from being the bottom half of our lineup, after Steven is cleared. As good as the other first years are, Houston and Lee have really worked hard and gotten very powerful games. The depth on this team is incredible. Once again, we will be VERY tough at 4-6 in singles. Advertise With The Sabre! TheSabre.com has come a long way since its conception in 1996. Issue No. 314 - October 22, 2007
This Week In Recruiting Basketball recruiting ... Two down, two to go. Virginia head men's basketball coach Dave Leitao has landed two of his top targets in the 2008 recruiting class in 6-6, 195-pound Holy Cross (Flushing, N.Y.) guard Sylven Landesberg and 6-11, 235-pound DeSmet Jesuit (St. Louis, MO) center John Brandenburg. Now, Virginia's head man will wait for two more decisions to be made. 7-0, 230-pound center Assane Sene, a Senegal native who attends South Kent School in Connecticut, made an official visit to Syracuse this past weekend. It was the third official visit for Sene, who had already made official visits to UVa and U-Conn, respectively. According to South Kent head coach Raphael Chillious, Sene is expected to "evaluate where he is" in the recruiting process. Stay tuned, as we will follow up with Coach Chillious this week for more on this situation. There is a possibility that Sene could decide very soon. While it is not known when Sene could make a decision, the date for 5-star guard Elliot Williams' announcement is set. According to multiple reports, the 6-4 St. George (Memphis, TN) senior will announce his decision next Friday, Nov. 2. The finalists include Duke, Memphis, Tennessee, and Virginia. Williams made official visits to each of the four finalists and is now taking a few weeks to make up his mind. According to sources, Virginia would accept commitments from both Sene and Williams.
