Missing Element Key In Win The Virginia men's basketball team picked up an ACC road victory on Sunday by gutting out an overtime win at Georgia Tech. There were plenty of storylines in the 88-84 outcome, but an important 3-pointer by Jamil Tucker in regulation provides a glimpse at one of the Cavaliers' biggest keys to success. Coming into the game, Virginia averaged just 5.6 3-pointers per game while shooting 29.9%. Against GT, Tucker's 3 was one of 9 treys on the day and UVa shot 39.1% from downtown. Tucker made 3 of 3 from beyond the arc while Mustapha Farrakhan hit 2 of 3. Point guard Sammy Zeglinski, who tied his career high with 6 assists and set a new career high with 6 rebounds, made 3 of 9 trifectas. Taking it a step further, the Hoos hadn't hit the long ball with any consistency at any point this season ... until the last week that is. Against Hampton and GT, they made 16 3-pointers on 46 attempts, a 34.8% clip. Before that, the team made 43 of 144 treys, a 29.9% rate of success; 13 of the season's made 3-pointers came against Liberty on 32 attempts, meaning the Cavs shot 26.8% in the other 6 games. The updward trend in the last week is an important development. After all, UVa had set school records in made 3-pointers the last two seasons with 257 in 2006-07 (36.4%) and 274 in 2007-08 (36.6%). Combine that with an increased focus on feeding the post and finding points in the paint and UVa could be planting the seeds of an effective offensive attack. The 3-pointers made for the season:

This Week In Recruiting Xaverian (Brooklyn, N.Y.) offensive lineman Oday Aboushi told TheSabre.com on Sunday that he hopes to make his college decision soon. The 6-6, 305-pound senior is only considering Rutgers and Virginia at this time, and the Cavaliers appear to be in great shape. Aboushi, a standout two-way player in high school, committed to Boston College in late November but reneged several weeks later. He made an official visit to UVa the second weekend in December and then cancelled an official visit to Maryland scheduled for the third weekend in December. Aboushi has an official scheduled to Rutgers for the weekend of Jan. 24, but he would like to reschedule that trip for next weekend. Aboushi, who camped at UVa in June, is one of Virginia's top remaining offensive line targets. Though he played offensive tackle in high school, he has potential as an offensive guard or offensive tackle on the next level. TheSabre.com hopes to have more on the recruitment of 6-3, 244-pound DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD) defensive end Jeremiah Mathis early this week. Mathis, who is being recruited by UVa as an outside linebacker, seemed to have an offer - or at least had one coming soon - from the Cavs following a Dec. 20 unofficial visit. Sources indicated prior to Mathis' visit that Virginia likely would be the big favorite if an offer was extended, but as of yet nothing appears to have happened. Virginia would like to add at least one more outside linebacker prospect in this class, and Mathis is coming off of a senior season in which he racked up over 90 tackles including 13 sacks en route to earning first-team all-conference honors. A top student-athlete, Mathis has already earned scholarship offers from Kansas State, Maryland, New Mexico, North Carolina State, and Syracuse according to head coach Bill McGregor. Check out the latest today on 6-2, 185-pound wide receiver recruit Tyree Watkins. The Camden (N.J.) star updates his recruitment, including whether or not he will take an official visit to another school besides Virginia. Watkins will make an official scheduled to UVa for the weekend of Jan. 16. Also stay tuned for more from other Virginia commitments this week. The latest "Postseason Update" will feature Orange (VA) star athlete Quintin Hunter, who indicates that Virginia will give him a chance at quarterback on the next level. The 6-2, 195-pound prospect starred at quarterback for Orange each of the past two seasons but initially figured as a wide receiver at UVa. On the 2010 class front, stay tuned for the latest on Brookville (Lynchburg, VA) standout defensive end/tight end Zack McCray. McCray, who boasts eight Division 1A offers thus far, discusses his recruitment including where Virginia may stand at this point. On the 2009 class basketball recruiting front, we'll check in with 6-6, 190-pound John Marshall (Richmond, VA) small forward Travis McKie. McKie is one of Virginia's top overall targets in the 2010 class.

Issue No. 141 - June 4, 2004 Appelt wins Tewaaraton Trophy
Virginia's junior attacker claimed lacrosse's equivalent of the Heisman on Thursday night after putting together one of the best seasons in the history of women's lacrosse. She scored 90 goals and accumulated 121 points as the Cavaliers went 19-3, sweeping their final 10 games to win the ACC and NCAA titles. Appelt became only the third player in history to record 90 goals in a season, and only the fourth to reach 120 points. She scored at least two goals in every game, notching a hat trick (three or more goals) in 20 of Virginia's 22 games. Appelt also was named the Honda Sports Award recipient for lacrosse, the first Cavalier to earn that distinction. She is now a candidate for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the Honda-Broderick Cup, the top award for collegiate women athletes.
