Former Lacrosse Player Barrow Has Died

Image: Will BarrowWill Barrow, a recent standout defender and captain on the men's lacrosse team, has died. Barrow, 22, passed away Saturday in Charlottesville, University of Virginia spokeswoman Carol Wood confirmed to The Daily Progress and The Cavalier Daily. A cause of death has not been disclosed at this time.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Will Barrow's family," athletic director Craig Littlepage said in a news release, according to The Richmond Times-Dispatch. "Will was a valued member of the University of Virginia community and of our athletics department family. His loss is difficult for all who knew him -- his teammates, coaches, teachers, friends and department staff members. All are grieving for Will and for his parents and his sister and his brother."

Barrow was on of the country's top defensive midfielders throughout his career. He was selected with the first pick in the second round (11th overall) by the Chicago Machine in the 2008 Major League Lacrosse Draft. Barrow played in five games for the Machine, scoring three goals.

"Everyone associated with Major League Lacrosse is saddened over the untimely loss of Will," MLL Commissioner David Gross said in a statement. "During this difficult time, we would like to offer our condolences to his family, his friends, and to everyone else whose lives he touched."

Arrangements for a memorial service have not yet been made. UVa's Offices of Student Affairs and Dean of Students are offering counseling for those who need it.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Football recruiting

St. Xavier (Cincinnati, OH), one of the top prep programs in the state of Ohio and typically in the country, had two senior prospects visit the University of Virginia this past weekend. 6-3, 215-pound linebacker prospect Luke Kuechly and 6-4, 250-pound defensive end Patrick Muldoon were the only official visitors on UVa's grounds this past weekend and TheSabre.com hopes to reach both players for comments on the experience this week.

Muldoon, one of Virginia's top defensive end targets, is also considering Boston College, Cincinnati, Duke, and Wisconsin. He has now taken official visits to Boston College, Virginia, and Wisconsin. Kuechly, an athletic prospect who played safety this past season for head coach Steve Specht, is considering Boston College, Duke, Stanford, and the Cavaliers. He made an official visit to Boston College prior to this weekend's trip and has scheduled officials to Duke (December) and Stanford (January).

Kuechly and Muldoon may have been the only official visitors this past weekend, but they certainly weren't the only other prospects in attendance. UVa commitments confirmed to have been in attendance included QB Ross Metheny, WR Kevin Royal, TE Paul Freedman, OL Luke Bowanko, OL Sean Cascarano, S Perry Jones, and S Corey Lillard. Cascarano's experience was his first ever UVa game experience and he discusses it in an article later this week.

Perry Jones starred for Oscar Smith on Friday night, scoring four touchdowns in leading the Tigers to a Group AAA, Division 6 Eastern Regional final win over Ocean Lakes. Jones, a 5-9, 185-pound prospect, is the starting tailback and linebacker for Oscar Smith but projects as a safety at UVa.

TheSabre.com was in attendance for Oscar Smith's win, so stay tuned for more from Jones later this week. With respect to other Cavalier commitments, we'll also check in with wide receiver Tyree Watkins. The 6-2, 180-pound Camden (N.J.) star was scheduled to make an official visit to UVa this past weekend but did not make the trip because of high school playoffs.

Also, a decision from Lafayette (Williamsburg, VA) defensive end William Hill is expected to come this week. The 6-4, 260-pound prospect, Defensive Player of the Year in the Bay Rivers District this season, has narrowed his list to Maryland, Penn State, Tennessee, and Virginia.

Hill has taken official visits to Maryland, Penn State and Tennessee. While he hasn't taken an official to UVa, he has taken numerous unofficial trips throughout this year. Hill's final official visit likely was to the University of Maryland, which is where he was this past weekend.

We'll check in with the in-state star for more soon, including more on when a college decision may come.

Basketball recruiting

Fairfax (Los Angeles, CA) 5-star center Renardo Sidney enjoyed his unofficial visit in Charlottesville by all accounts, but it does not appear as though the 6-10, 250-pound senior signed a letter of intent with any school in this early signing period. Virginia's staff is likely excited with the two prospects that did sign, though, in 6-8, 220-pound forward Tristan Spurlock and 5-11, 185-pound point guard Jontel Evans.

Spurlock, a highly rated recruit who chose UVa over Georgetown, is an athletic prospect who projects as a small forward for the Cavaliers. Evans, who made a name for himself with the tenacious defense he demonstrated this past AAU circuit, is a tough, hard-nosed floor general. Both prospects play for Boo Williams on the AAU circuit.

UVa Recruiting Notes
Image: Dominique WallaceTheSabre.com catches up with top running back recruit Dominique Wallace for a "Q&A" prior to Chancellor's (Fredericksburg, VA) regional final match-up against Powhatan. We'll also update this weekend's official visitors and take a look at some of the top playoff match-ups for Virginia commitments.

Jontel Evans Signs with UVa
Image: Jontel EvansBethel (Hampton, VA) point guard Jontel Evans signed a letter of intent with the University of Virginia last week, becoming an official part of Cavaliers 2009 men's basketball recruiting class. Signing on the dotted line certainly was a special occasion for the 5-11, 185-pound senior.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

George Welsh
John Phillips
With two more commitments this week, UVa is now up to seven verbal commitments for the 2005 recruiting class. Five of those commits are in-state, with the others being from Pennsylvania (The Haverford School OL Will Barker) and North Carolina (Southern Durham WR/OLB Maurice Covington). This week the Cavaliers landed commitments from Bath County HS (VA) tight end John Phillips and North Stafford HS (VA) offensive lineman Patrick Slebonick.

Phillips, a 6-6, 240-pound prospect, chose the Hoos over an offer from Virginia Tech. William & Mary, which his brother Jacob will attend next year on a football scholarship, also was seriously in the running. UNC was heavily recruiting him as well.

Patrick Slebonick
Patrick Slebonick
Slebonick gave his verbal this morning to Coach Groh and company. At 6-4, 290 pounds, he is a prototypical offensive line prospect who could end up anywhere on the line. He boasted offers from Virginia Tech and N.C. State, with Maryland, Tennessee, and West Virginia among the other schools giving him serious looks.

The weekend of April 17th and 18th promises to be a big weekend for the Hoos. The 17th is the Spring Game, followed by the Nike Camp on the 18th. Don't be surprised if UVa pulls out another commitment after that weekend.

In Case You Missed It ...

Sabre articles since the last SabreMail

Quick Take: John Brandenburg
Image: John BrandenburgThe Virginia men's basketball team is off to a 3-0 start this season after topping Radford on Friday. The 68-66 victory over the Highlanders provided the first look at true freshman center John Brandenburg in a regular season game. The Sabre caught up with him after the game for a "Quick Take" about his college debut with the Cavaliers.

Turnovers Plague Cavs In Loss To Clemson
Image: Marc VericaUnlike some of Virginia's head-scratching losses this season (i.e. Miami, Duke, etc.) the reasons for Saturday's 13-3 loss to Clemson were relatively simple. Turnovers, give-aways, and missed opportunities existed on both sides of the ball for the Cavaliers and those half dozen plays were ultimately too much for Virginia's sluggish offense to overcome.

Defense's Day Not Enough To Top Tigers
Image: Clint SintimShortly after the clock hit zeroes on Saturday, a senior accepted a few pats on the back from the Clemson coaching staff for a game well played. He slowly turned and looked around at the cold, unforgiving, and, by then, near empty concrete. He took a knee for a moment, then walked slowly toward the locker room. Lingering. Lingering. Lingering. And finally he lowered his head just a little and ducked into the tunnel. That's how linebacker Clint Sintim spent his last few moments at Scott Stadium in a Virginia uniform. Completely spent. Disappointed. With a disheartening 13-3 loss to Clemson.

Hoos Eke Out Win Against Radford
Image: Sylven LandesbergThe Cavaliers' state-flavored introduction to the 2008-09 men's basketball season certainly has not been devoid of drama. First, the VMI Keydets brought a run-and-gun spice to the John Paul Jones Arena and then Radford followed with a pinch of post-powered seasoning on Friday night. Fortunately for Virginia, it escaped the most recent contest without the proverbial bad taste it its mouth, defeating the visiting Highlanders 68-66 to improve to 3-0 on the season.

Time To Take Notice Of Tucker
Image: Jamil TuckerShortly after Virginia's 77-75 win Wednesday night, South Florida coach Stan Heath remarked, unprompted mind you, that UVa' Jamil Tucker was the "biggest surprise" and did more than the Bulls "expected" in the Cavaliers' victory. Tucker posted a line of 15 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 1 block. And while Heath was not surprised, it may be time for opponents and fans to take notice of Tucker.

Clemson Scouting Report: Defense & Punting
Image: Clemson TigersWith eight returning starters on the defensive side of the ball for a team that only gave up 18.7 points and 306.8 yards per game, much was expected this fall. And while the Clemson offense has not lived up to its preseason billing, the defense has for the most part. The Tigers have given up 26 points on average in their five loses and only 11 points per game in five wins. The question for Saturday: Can the Hoos score over 20?

Seniors Set For Final Scott Showing
Image: Clint SintimClint Sintim simply doesn't know what will be running through his head when he runs through the tunnel and on to the field at Scott Stadium for the last time Saturday as the Cavaliers take on Clemson. "It's going to be a special day," Sintim said. "I don't know how I'll feel about it."

Cavaliers Charge Past Bulls
Image: Sylven LandesbergWhat did fans end up getting in the first ever meeting between South Florida and Virginia? A rugged, hard fought battle that frequently materializes when teams from the Big East and ACC get together. At the final buzzer, the Cavaliers had squeaked out a 77-75 victory thanks to balanced scoring, a little defense down the stretch, and enough free throws to get by - barely.

Clemson Scouting Report: Offense & Kicking
Image: Clemson TigersFor those of you that have been clamoring for a college football playoff, you've got your wish. Sort of. This week Georgia Tech and Miami will play a critical game Thursday night that will go a long way in determining who will represent the Coastal Division in the ACC title game. The Clemson Tigers and Cavaliers will face-off with bowl positions, and in the case of the Cavaliers, a possible shot at the ACC title on the proverbial line.

The Hawk's Nest - Bubble Screens
Image: Ahmad HawkinsAfter a much-needed week off, the Virginia Cavaliers look to get back on the winning track this Saturday when they face the Clemson Tigers. Both teams are 5-5 with hopes of becoming bowl eligible by season's end. The Cavs will have their hands full this weekend trying to contain the Tigers' spread offense. One element that has been successful for the Tigers at times is their ability to execute the bubble screen.

Photo Gallery: UVa 107, VMI 97
Image: Sammy ZeglinskiThe Virginia men's basketball team opened its season with a 107-97 victory against VMI on Sunday. Several players put up impressive statistics in the high-paced game, including freshman Sylven Landesberg and sophomore Mike Scott. Sammy Zeglinksi, Mamadi Diane, and Jamil Tucker all scored in double figures as well. Relive the exciting action from the game with this 85-image photo gallery!

Tuesday Press Conference Notes '08 - Clemson
Image: Clemson TigersAs one might expect from two 5-5 football teams, Virginia and Clemson have experienced an up-and-down ride this season. The Cavaliers opened 1-3 before winning four straight games and now they've lost two in a row. The Tigers opened the season ranked in the top 10 before losing a lopsided contest to Alabama in the first game. Since then, they've had a winning streak of three games and a losing streak of three games. Now, both teams are trying to finish on the upswing with an eye on bowl eligibility.

Animal Scott Helps Top VMI
Image: Mike ScottAn animal. That's what Sylven Landesberg called teammate Mike Scott following a 107-97 win against VMI on Sunday. It is a fairly accurate descriptor. Scott proved to be a dominant force in the paint in the victory, scoring 26 points to go with 18 rebounds, which included a school-record tying 10 offensive boards.
