Help Support Philip Brown

Wahoo fans and friends of Philip Brown,

As many of you know, Philip was battling testicular cancer last year and had to undergo a series of tests, surgery and chemo to save his life. Well, papagator recently reported that Philip's cancer has returned, this time to other parts of his body. Again, Philip will have to fight to save his life by undergoing more surgery and chemotherapy.

There are two ways you can help Philip and his family, both you can apply by clicking the link below. First, you can post your prayers, well wishes or other comments to him in the guestbook. I will make sure that Philip and his family have the link to see your thoughts. Second, you can make a donation to help cover the enormous costs associated with his ordeal.

Thanks,

   Recruiting News

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

The big news of the weekend is on the men's basketball front; 5-star center/power forward Renardo Sidney is making an unofficial visit to the University of Virginia. The 6-10, 250-pound Fairfax (Los Angeles, CA) star, a senior, reportedly may sign in basketball's early signing period and Virginia is hoping to be the choice.

One of the top prospect's in the 2009 recruiting class, Sidney is a player who is not expected to stay long at whatever destination he chooses, but he would be a big-time get for the Cavaliers. In fact, he would be one of Virginia's basketball's most highly rated commitments ever.

UCLA and many other programs have also offered Sidney, but UVa's biggest competition may be USC according to sources. Reportedly, Sidney is also considering a year in Europe before heading to the NBA.

TheSabre.com will be sure to monitor Sidney's situation, and if anything breaks we'll be sure to follow up on it. Unless Sidney comes aboard, the Cavaliers will only sign two players in this early signing period. Word of Life (Springfield, VA) star Tristan Spurlock, a 6-8, 220-pound forward, and Bethel (Hampton, VA) point guard Jontel Evans, each of whom was expected to be in Charlottesville on Sunday, are expected to sign this month.

The early signing period for the 2009 class began on Nov. 12 and ends on Nov. 19 (this Wednesday).

In case you missed it, check out the latest on several of Virginia's 2010 class targets on the EDGE. Last week, we produced articles on John Marshall/Community School (Richmond, VA) forward Travis McKie and Greenfield School (Wilson, N.C.) guard Brian Richardson.

The 6-6 McKie is considering offers from Clemson, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest, among others. He also has interest from Florida and North Carolina. Richardson, a 6-5, 155-pound prospect, is an under-the-radar guard who can play the point guard and shooting guard spots. George Washington, UNC-Wilmington, Richmond and Virginia are among the early offers for Richardson.

Football recruiting ...

UVa has tried to score talent from talent-rich St. Xavier (Cincinnati, OH) over the past several years but has come up unsuccessful. This weekend, the Cavaliers will host two more St. Xavier seniors as linebacker Luke Kuechly and defensive end Pat Muldoon will be in Charlottesville on official visits.

Kuechly, a versatile and athletic prospect who played safety this past season, is also considering Boston College, Duke and Stanford. He has taken an official visit to Boston College and has visits scheduled to Duke and Stanford. Muldoon, one of Virginia's top targets at the defensive end position, is considering Boston College, Cincinnati, Duke and Wisconsin in addition to the Cavaliers.

Stay tuned for more with Kuechly and we'll be sure to follow up with both following their official visits.

Camden (N.J.) wide receiver Tyree Watkins, a current Virginia commitment, is also planning to make his official visit this weekend. We'll be sure to follow up with the 6-2, 180-pound prospect, who is one of Virginia's most highly rated recruits in the 2009 class. We'll also try to track down other potential visitors.

Watkins, who committed to Virginia in June, had wavered some on his decision but recently has seemed more solid. He will make a final decision on if he will take more visits after this weekend's trip.

Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Army All-American OL/DL Down to Four
Catholic Memorial (West Roxbury, MA) offensive lineman/defensive lineman Brennan Williams was a big University of Michigan fan growing up, so when he received an offer from the Wolverines that figured to be trouble for other potential suitors. However, the U.S. Army All-American Bowl selection now seems to have eliminated Michigan and instead will concentrate on four ACC programs.

Recruiting Notes
Image: Tristan SpurlockVirginia men's basketball has a huge weekend ahead. Coach Leitao and company not only will kick off the 2008/2009 season, but they are expected to host 5-star center Renardo Sidney on an unofficial visit. UVa commit Tristan Spurlock plans to be in Charlottesville on Sunday to help persuade the talented prospect. We check in with Spurlock and also look at the latest on UVa's 2009 class football commitments and what lies ahead on the playoff front.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Basketball recruiting ...

Half of UVa's current 2007 recruiting class was in action over the weekend. Last Friday, Mustapha Farrakhan led Thornton Township (Harvey, IL) to a Class AA sectional title championship. The 6'3" guard led Thornton with 15 points - 11 in the fourth quarter - in the 60-49 win over Thornwood.

Thornton, which is now 24-5 on the season, moves on to face Hillcrest tomorrow night in a supersectional. The winner of that game moves on to the state quarterfinals.

Hargrave Military Academy (25-5) traveled to Washington, D.C., for its final tournament of the season - the National Prep School Basketball Finals. Hargrave, one of four teams selected, fell in the opening round to Bridgton Academy by a score of 121-118 (2OT). UVa signee Mike Scott, a 6'8", 215-pound forward, finished with 21 points in a losing effort.

Sabre articles since the last SabreMail

UVa Upends VMI
Image: Sylven LandesbergWelcome to Virginia, Sylven Landesberg. Setting a UVa record for most points by a freshman in their debut (28), Landesberg crept his way to a monster night in the Hoos' opening 107-97 win over VMI on Sunday. In fact, he had one of those lines that will likely be talked about for quite some time. Landesberg tallied 28 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists, and 3 steals in a team-leading 36 minutes. Not a bad debut.

2008-09 Schedule Analysis
Image: Jeff JonesEntering the 2008-09 season, expectations aren't high for the Virginia men's basketball team. The Hoos have been pegged to finish 12th in the ACC. Most pundits would be surprised if they found their way into a postseason event like the NCAA Tournament or the NIT. After all, last year's Cavaliers only managed a spot in the CBI and lost their best individual player in Sean Singletary.

10 Questions For UVa In 2008-09, Part Two
Image: Dave LeitaoAs Dave Leitao and the Virginia men's basketball team get ready to kick off another season, questions exist on offense and defense. The Sabre.com has set out to answer 10 of the most salient questions to the Hoos' success in 2009. In this, the second of a two-part series, we examine some of the toughest questions that the Virginia men's basketball season will face this season. We'll examine the rebounding efforts and look at one of the major off-season focuses for the Hoos: defense.

Greg's Stock Report '08: Wake Forest
About midway through the third quarter of Saturday's game in Winston-Salem, amid the jeers of "fire this guy" and the frustrations of hundreds of disgruntled Wahoo fans sitting around us, my 5-year-old son came up with maybe the best cheer of the day. Raising his little fists in the air he shouted, "Do something better! Do something better!" From the mouth of babes comes so much truth. The fact is the Cavaliers did little right against Wake Forest and the grades and outcome are simply further proof of that truth.

10 Questions For UVa In 2008-09, Part One
Image: Sylven LandesbergIn a season where there may be more questions than answers, it seems particularly appropriate to kick things off with a round of 10 questions. On a roster that only has two seniors, Tunji Soroye and Mamadi Diane, performance is the great unknown. The questions facing this young squad are almost too many to tackle but we've given it our best shot here. Here is part one of 10 key questions facing Dave Leitao's squad.

10 Things I Learned ... Wake Forest
Image: Wake Forest Demon DeaconsComing off a difficult loss to Miami, UVa was in need of a bounce back performance against Wake Forest. Unfortunately, while Virginia did bounce back during the course of the Wake Forest game, it was bouncing back not from the Miami loss but from the 28-3 halftime deficit the team was facing. Not exactly the bounce back the team - or the Hoo fan base - was looking for. What did we learn from a road loss in Winston-Salem?

Photo Gallery: Virginia 87, Shepherd 52
Image: Sylven LandesbergVirginia fans got their first glimpse of the 2008-09 men's basketball team Sunday as the Hoos won an exhibition tilt against Shepherd. The game featured the debuts of Sylven Landesberg, John Brandenburg, and Assane Sene in the orange and blue. Check out 66 photos from the action in the John Paul Jones Arena!

Best Seat In The House: Moore, Littlepage
The Best Seat in the House has stayed busy this week even with the football team enjoying a bye on the schedule. Cavalier star Shawn Moore and Virginia Athletics Director Craig Littlepage joined the show recently covering topics ranging from the football team to the election. Check out the free audio files here on The Sabre!

Can Virginia Find The Accelerator?
Image: Jed WilliamsTo many purveyors of ACC hoops - casual and fanatical alike - Dave Leitao's fourth Virginia basketball outfit looks like a car in the midst of a 200-point inspection: new engine, adjusted features, and virtually no idea how that baby will handle on the open road. The question that naturally falls off the assembly line, then, is why is Leitao still test-driving? With three seasons and an NCAA Tournament in his rear view mirror, plus a sparkling palace to park the car in, why isn't UVa's chief mechanic at the wheel of a finely calibrated machine by now?

Take 5: Keys To Success In 2008
Image: Jamil Tucker I feel like I was cheated. Having spent the majority of last season abroad, I missed Sean Singletary’s farewell tour. I wish I had been here to see Singletary finish off his career leading the Cavs to the National Championship - what’s that? The CBI? Hmm. Oh well, with a new season on the horizon, I’ll follow the Cavaliers into the post-Singletary era.
