UVa Wins 2, Loses 1 In Canada

The Virginia basketball team's three-game weekend trip to Canada produced two wins and a close loss. The Cavaliers defeated defeated St. Lawrence College 107-60 and Concordia University 85-70 in exhibition games on Saturday before fallling to McGill University 88-83 on Sunday.

UVa coach Dave Leitao believes the experience from practice and games in August will help his team.

"Any time you compete, the object is to win," Leitao said in a news release. "McGill played well and I congratulate them on the victory. Over this weekend we'd obviously rather win than lose, but in the case of this trip, I probably coached a little differently. I was coaching to get better as a team and to find some things out. As a result of this game, we can identify areas we need to work on and when we get started in October work on those areas to be sure by the time we get to the season we've shored those things up."

The plan included strategies like sharing minutes and mixing line-ups. For instance, most of the "minutes played" numbers fell in the low 20's and no one played more than 29 minutes all weeked, a number Jeff Jones reached in the finale. That was one of three instances in three games where someone surpassed 25 minutes - Jamil Tucker played 27 against McGill and Jerome Meyinsse logged 26 against St. Lawrence.

The production was spread out as well. Against McGill, Calvin Baker and Jones each had 18 points to lead the way. Against St. Lawrence, Sylven Landesberg and Baker put up 18 each and Landesberg's 16 was the high amount against Concordia. In total, 13 players (Mike Scott, Baker, Jones, Meyinsse, and Landesberg vs. St. Lawrence; Scott, Landesberg, Baker, and Jones against Concordia; Meyinsse, Baker, Jones and Sammy Zeglinski against McGill) scored in double figures at least once in three games. The statistics were similarly spread in rebounds where 11 players grabbed at least six rebounds once in the three-game run (Landesberg, Meyinsse, and Scott against St. Lawrence; Landesberg, Scott, Meyinsse, Zeglinski, Tucker, and Tunji Soroye against Concorida; Zeglinksi and Meyinsse against McGill).

In the end, Leitao seemed pleased with the trip and it's purpose.

"I think with just about every team that takes a trip like this there's as much off the court that you want to do," Leitao said. "It was good to get the guys in situations where they bonded and to understand the meaning of living outside of their box a little bit more. In any team structured atmosphere you have to be able to give and get. I think as much as anything, having these 10 days of practice and a weekend trip, away from what happens on the court was very beneficial and something that will hopefully carry over into the season."

Box scores: St. Lawrence | Concordia | McGill

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

A large number of recruits turned out for Saturday's loss to USC, but right now most of the response has been positive. In talking with Sherando (Stephens City, VA) quarterback Ross Metheny, a number of Virginia's commitments continue to be excited at the prospect of being at UVa next year. They were also impressed with the game atmosphere.

"All the guys and I were talking about how neat the opening was, with the fly over and the adventures of Cavman," Metheny said. Specifically, the 6-3, 190-pound senior signal caller spoke with outside linebacker recruit Tucker Windle, offensive lineman Luke Bowanko, linebacker Connor McCartin, running back Dominique Wallace, safety Corey Lillard and quarterback/wide receiver Quintin Hunter.

"We can't wait to be a part of it," he said. "It is always a neat experience [at Virginia]. It was also kind of neat to see new wrinkles and new changes to the offense."

We'll have more on Metheny later today, including his take on his upcoming senior season - he has fully recovered from the broken fibula he suffered in the final game of last season and he is looking forward to the season opener this Friday.

Much can be made about how a recruit will react to one game in particular. I think most realize that it is just one game, against one of the top teams in the country no less, and will look to see how the team reacts the rest of the way this season. I would be very surprised if the outing has a big impact on commitments especially, most of which seem very solid in their commitment to the University of Virginia.

One prospect who was not solid heading into the game was Camden Catholic (N.J.) wide receiver Tyree Watkins, who was expected to be in attendance on Saturday. Watkins told TheSabre.com last month that he would watch carefully with a decision on if he would make official visits to other schools coming afterwards.

We'll also catch up with 2009 and 2010 class targets that have not committed. Top in-state 2009 recruits Morgan Moses and Logan Thomas were in attendance and we plan to talk to both of these kids this week if possible. 2010 prospects were in attendance as well, including already offered Zack McCray, a tight end/defensive end out of Brookville, and Madison County offensive lineman Caleb Farris.

In case you missed it, TheSabre.com's Preseason Top 40 was posted on Friday. Check out where each of Virginia's 11 in-state commitments are ranked in this latest edition ...

Chancellor (Fredericksburg) RB Dominique Wallace - #6
Orange QB/WR Quintin Hunter - #9
Deep Run (Glen Allen) DE Jake Snyder - #14
Liberty (Bealeton) S Corey Lillard - #19
Oscar Smith (Chesapeake) DB Perry Jones - #21
Sherando (Stephens City) QB Ross Metheny - #22
Harrisonburg RB Alex Owah - #25
Centreville (Clfiton) OL Luke Bowanko - #30
Fauquier LB Connor McCartin - #39
Maury (Norfolk) S/LB/WR Laroy Reynolds - #40
Phoebus (Hampton) S/LB LoVante Battle - Others to watch

Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Top Recruit Wallace Ready for Senior Season
Image: Dominique WallaceThe night before he heads to Charlottesville to check out his future team in action, UVa running back recruit Dominique Wallace will be in action as Chancellor (Fredericksburg, VA) takes on Turner Ashby in what will be the Chargers season opener. Wallace is anxious to start what will be his fourth straight season on the varsity level, being apart of a team that lost only five seniors from last year's team and is returning nine starters on the defensive side of the ball.

TheSabre's 2009 Preseason Top 40
Image: Morgan MosesThere aren't too many significant moves from the Pre-Summer Top 30 to the Preseason ranks, though there are some changes. The overlying story of this class continues to be it s exceptional depth, which is why I expanded the list to a Top 40 instead of a Top 30. That is the first change. The other is the fact that there is a new name atop the Top 40 list.

2010 Profile: John Marshall Forward Travis McKie
Image: Travis McKieA top rising junior, John Marshall (Richmond, VA) product Travis McKie has earned six official scholarship offers to this point in his recruitment. Boston College, Clemson, Maryland, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest have offered the 6-6, 185-pound forward, a first-team Richmond Times-Dispatch all-metro selection last season as a sophomore.

UVA Bookstores Lends A Hand

UVA Bookstores, the official Wahoo gear sponsor of TheSabre.com, is lending a hand to two Virginia non-profit organizations this fall. In Richmond, Meals on Wheels Serving Central Virginia is the sponsored group and in Waynesboro, the Waynesboro YMCA is the featured organization. Both groups will be raising funds by selling the 2008 UVA Bookstore Football Fan T-shirt as well as the 2008-2009 UVA Bookstore All-Sports T-shirt for just $10 each. Every t-shirt sold will help defray the costs for the more than 80% of Central Virginia clients unable to fully pay for nourishing home delivered meals (Meals on Wheels Serving Central Virginia) or will help go towards youth basketball scholarships as the YMCA turns no one away due to the inability to pay.

In order to support these great causes by buying T-shirts, you'll need to make the purchase through specific channels. To support Richmond's Meals on Wheels Serving Central Virginia, T-shirts need to be purchased at the Meals on Wheels Office (1600 Willow Lawn Drive, Richmond, Virginia 23230, Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Call Kristin Stokes or Kathleen Seal at 804-673-5035) or online at www.uvabookstores.com/mow. Renovations Planned at The Park

Virginia Athletic Media Relations
Official Release

The Virginia Athletics Department has announced plans to enhance and renovate The Park, home of the Cavalier softball team. Construction is under way and the second phase of this project is expected to be completed this fall. The goal of the project is to create a top-level playing field and facility.

"This project is in keeping with the athletics department's goals to provide high quality facilities for our teams," said Executive Associate Director of Athletics Jon Oliver. "The work being done at The Park and in the softball locker room is designed to provide the team with improved facilities in which to prepare for competition and play games."

Upgrades at The Park include a new playing surface consisting of Patriot Bermuda grass. Renovations will also create a new drainage and irrigation system. The dimensions of the field will also be slightly altered and increase to 210-220-210.

Other renovations include new dugouts, bullpens and a second batting cage. Additionally, a new scoreboard and fence will be added. The Virginia softball team will also see its locker room, housed in University Hall, undergo a facelift. The locker room renovation includes new custom lockers and audio-visual capabilities.

"The renovations at The Park are a sign of the administration's strong commitment to Virginia softball," said Eileen Schmidt, head softball coach. "The enhancements that will be complete by the 2009 season will help our student-athletes on a daily basis and improve the spectator experience at the Park."

The first phase of the project was the installation of lights at The Park. This phase was completed prior to the 2008 season.

Blog Banter: On secret starters and other decisions

Peter LalichRight now, nobody outside the Tribe really knows who Groh is going to pick as his starting quarterback for this Saturday against USC. In fact, everyone is pretty much expecting Groh to keep his starting quarterback a secret until game time.

And what's the benefit of this? Pete Carroll is planning for Peter Lalich. That makes sense because (1) Lalich is the presumed front runner given his experience and (2) Carroll doesn't have any game tape on anyone else anyway and (3) his defense is so good it doesn't really matter which inexperienced quarterback gets to hold the red cape. So, I don't think that Groh is going to be able to pull some amazing surprise out that will throw Carroll's game plan into chaos. Since the element of surprise is weak sauce here, then maybe this drama is because Groh isn't sure who to start. Or, more likely, it's because he's planning on running multiple quarterbacks regardless and figures that the starter won't be as significant as a traditional starter might be.

Baseball Fever strikes Charlottesville

Coach Brian O'Connor
Coach Brian O'Connor
Until recently, the notion of a UVa baseball sellout seemed pretty preposterous. But Davenport Field already has had a capacity crowd of 2,000 on hand twice this season -- first for a doubleheader sweep of Clemson on April 10, then for a 21-10 rout of Virginia Tech two days ago.

"We've talked about what we're trying to build here," first-year head coach Brian O'Connor said after Wednesday's game. "A night like tonight is what it's all about."

The victory over the Hokies was Virginia's 14th straight, surpassing the previous school record by two. The 15th-ranked Cavaliers (34-7) will take that streak to Florida, where they will play No. 4 Miami in a three-game series this weekend.

"This is going to put us on the map," said senior pitcher/DH Joe Koshansky.

In Case You Missed It ...

Sabre articles since the last SabreMail

View From The EDGE: USC Postgame
Image: Southern California TrojansVirginia's season-opening tilt with Southern California certainly stings a little. After all, a 52-7 demolition to start the 2008 schedule isn't a rosy outcome. The Sabre is enlisting an EDGE member every week to provide a look back at the weekend's opponent. Grimlock takes the snap this week for the postgame take of USC.

Lalich's First Start Both Good & Bad
Image: Peter LalichThe Virginia football team finally announced a starting quarterback on Saturday. With about 10 minutes remaining on the pregame clock, the starting line-ups flashed across HooVision. No. 7 Peter Lalich received the starting nod and all but a handful of snaps late in the fourth quarter. Quarterback controversy? Apparently not. Now that the spotlight shifts squarely on the shoulders of the sophomore, the focus will be on what he did well, what he didn't, and where the Hoos go from here.

Trojans Steamroll Cavaliers
Image: TrojanForget about an upset. It was all Virginia could do to play on the same field as No. 3 Southern California. And even that was a struggle at times. With a record-setting crowd of 64,947 looking on, USC - led by quarterback Mark Sanchez's precision passing and 3 touchdown tosses - scored early and often en route to a 52-7 romp over the Hoos.

Quick Take: Clint Sintim On USC
Image: Clint SintimAfter the departure of Chris Long, it quickly became evident that someone on the defense needed to step up to keep the energy, to be both a vocal leader and difference-maker. Everyone looked to senior linebacker Clint Sintim. Drawing on his competitive nature, Sintim answered the challenge, being named a team captain and displaying a definite leadership of the defense during camp but he says he hasn't felt any more pressure than before last season. In the latest "Quick Take", Sintim answered a few media questions about the upcoming test against the Trojans.

On The Right Path: Ogletree Set To Return
Image: Kevin OgletreeEven in his seventies, Lawrence Rossianno walked from Belmont Park to the Little League field to watch his grandson play. He wouldn't miss it. The truth is it brought pride and joy to his heart to see Kevin Ogletree perform on an athletic field. Every single time. Ogletree, now without his grandmother and grandfather for nearly two years, still speaks with great respect and reverence toward Lawrence and Patricia Rossianno, the paternal grandparents who helped raised him as a child. They are a part of who he is. And of who he wants to be.

Blog Banter: Conquest Chronicles Q&A
The Good Ol' Blog is bringing back last year's tradition of doing Q&A exchanges with bloggers or reporters that cover our rivals during game week. This week, we've got the fine USC blogger at Conquest Chronicles answering some questions here, and I'll be returning the favor on his site later today or tomorrow. See what USC thinks of the match-up with the Cavaliers.

View From The EDGE: USC
Image: Southern California TrojansThe countdown clock is rapidly approaching an all zeroes reading, which means it's time for football season at Virginia! The Sabre is enlisting an EDGE member every week to provide a pre-game look at the upcoming opponent. HooSingleBarrel is up first with a look at the Southern California Trojans, who visit Scott Stadium on Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.

The Hawk's Nest: Pulling Upsets
Image: Ahmad HawkinsThe time has come for the Virginia Cavaliers to start yet another quest toward attaining an ACC Championship. What better way to prove their worth than facing Pac-10 powerhouse USC. What can the Hoos do to overcome the underdog role? I'm glad you asked that question because I have a few keys I think will help an underdog shock the audience when it comes to bettering their chances for pulling off an upset.

USC Scouting Report: Defense & Punting
Image: Southern California TrojansLast year USC was the consensus No. 1 team in the nation entering the season, a ranking that relied heavily on the fact that the Trojans returned 10 veteran starters on a defense that head coach Pete Carroll called the fastest defense he had ever coached. Though not No. 1 entering 2008, USC is still rated among the top three teams in the nation by most services and with seven returning starters, Carroll may again have the fastest defense of his coaching tenure.

Q&A With Zak Stair
Image: Zak StairThroughout his career as a Cavalier, senior Zak Stair has faced a multitude of challenges, battled for playing time all over the offensive line, and filled a variety of positions in different capacities. Tackle, guard, center? He's played them all, missing only the right guard slot along the way. The Sabre caught up with Stair this week to get to know the 300-pound lineman a little better and find out how the line is preparing for USC.

Tuesday Press Conference Notes '08 - USC
Let's get the question on everyone's mind out of the way. No, Virginia still hasn't named a starter at quarterback. Not that anyone really expected something different at UVa's weekly press conference Tuesday. The good news? The Cavaliers have become a lot more entertaining with their answers to the inevitable quarterback questions.

USC Scouting Report: Offense & Kicking
Image: Southern California TrojansRegarding the USC offense Pete Carroll regularly states, "We are a balanced pro style offense employing multiple formations, motion, and personnel groupings". Simple right? Maybe, but stopping it is another matter. The high-powered Trojan offense has posted 30 points or more in 53 of its last 71 games and averaged a measly 32.6 points per game in what was considered a down year offensively in 2007.

Cavalier Call-In Highlights '08, Show 1
Image: Dave KoehnThe first edition of this year's Cavalier Call-in show definitely had a different feel to it. This year marked the first time in years that long-time play by play man Mac McDonald did not host the show. Enter Dave Koehn, the new "Voice of the Cavaliers". He welcomed coach Al Groh to the show and commented on how much anticipation there seems to be regarding the home opener against football powerhouse USC; UVa faces Southern California on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Scott Stadium.

Best Seat In The House: Welsh & Carroll
Image: Coach George WelshThe Best Seat in the House's bracket-style competition to determine the best Virginia football player ever has reached the finals where Anthony Poindexter and Shawn Moore are the two contestants. Former Hoo coach George Welsh joined the show recently to talk about some of the great players in the brackets. Also, check out free audio from USC coach Pete Carroll as the 2008 Hoos gear up for the season opener against the Trojans.
