       Recruiting News

    This Week In Recruiting
    By Chris Horne

Virginia plans to host a number of recruits, including quite a bit of its 2009 class of commitments, for this Saturday's season opener. As far as the commitments are concerned, Tyree Watkins will be one whose reaction will certainly be important. The Camden Catholic (Camden, N.J.) star wide receiver will be in attendance and will be watching the game closely, monitoring Virginia's passing offense as well as how the Cavaliers fare against one of the nation's best programs.

Watkins, who committed to Virginia while visiting for the Elite Prospect Day in June, may decide to take a closer look at other programs if he does not see what he is looking for on Saturday. He specifically mentioned Stanford as a program he could possibly take an official visit to, although he did say he would take an official visit to Virginia regardless of what comes from this weekend's experience.

Image: Logan ThomasTyree is one of many prospects we will check in with following Saturday's game. Uncommitted top target Logan Thomas is another. For the latest on Thomas be sure to check out an EDGE article later today on him, which includes comments from Brookville's (Lynchburg, VA) 24-21 win over Amherst on Friday night. Thomas also discusses a potential new team in the running for his services, and should this team extend an offer they would likely be added to his finalists.

Thomas and top 2010 recruit Zack McCray plan to be in Charlottesville for Saturday's game. We will check around to see which other uncommitted prospects - both 2009 and 2010 - are likely to be there as well.

Also coming this week is a follow up article on Chancellor (Fredericksburg, VA) star running back/linebacker Dominique Wallace, who is one of Virginia's most highly rated commitments in the 2009 class. Wallace and his teammates open up the 2008 season on Friday when they take on Turner Ashby.

Firm in his commitment, Wallace will also be in attendance this Saturday. He reflects on his commitment, discusses what it will be like to play alongside friends Quintin Hunter and Corey Lillard at UVa and more in this latest article. A top prospect on both sides of the ball, Wallace is being recruited by Virginia strictly as a running back.

Wallace was ranked the fifth overall prospect in the state in TheSabre.com's Pre-Summer Top 30. Later this week we'll release the Preseason ranks, so stay tuned for the updated version of the state's best prospects.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

    Urban Reflects on Terrific Offseason
Just days until Lorne Park (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada) begins its preseason training camp and less than two weeks until the start of school, University of Virginia recruit Brent Urban, a 6-7 defensive end prospect, is putting the finishing touches on what has been a successful offseason. In addition to accepting a full scholarship offer to UVa, Urban has really developed physically and is very confident heading into his senior season.

Is Watkins a Solid Commitment to Virginia?
Recent reports indicated that University of Virginia wide receiver commit Tyree Watkins was now a "soft commit" and willing to look at other programs. UVa offensive coordinator Mike Groh, who also serves as the primary recruiter here, was able to communicate with the 6-2, 180-pound Camden Catholic (Camden, N.J.) standout this week. What came from those conversations?

    Q&A with Tristan Spurlock

Image: Tristan SpurlockLast Wednesday, the Virginia Cavaliers men's basketball program picked up a big commitment in 6-8, 216-pound guard/forward Tristan Spurlock. Spurlock, rated a 4-star prospect by Rivals.com and Scout.com, chose the 'Hoos over offers from Clemson, Georgetown, N.C. State and Wake Forest, with the final decision coming down to UVa and Georgetown. The Woodbridge, Virginia, native took some time to discuss his commitment in depth in this latest edition of "Q&A".

    UVA Bookstores Lends A Hand

UVA Bookstores, the official Wahoo gear sponsor of TheSabre.com, is lending a hand to two Virginia non-profit organizations this fall. In Richmond, Meals on Wheels Serving Central Virginia is the sponsored group and in Waynesboro, the Waynesboro YMCA is the featured organization. Both groups will be raising funds by selling the 2008 UVA Bookstore Football Fan T-shirt as well as the 2008-2009 UVA Bookstore All-Sports T-shirt for just $10 each. Every t-shirt sold will help defray the costs for the more than 80% of Central Virginia clients unable to fully pay for nourishing home delivered meals (Meals on Wheels Serving Central Virginia) or will help go towards youth basketball scholarships as the YMCA turns no one away due to the inability to pay.

In order to support these great causes by buying T-shirts, you'll need to make the purchase through specific channels. To support Richmond's Meals on Wheels Serving Central Virginia, T-shirts need to be purchased at the Meals on Wheels Office (1600 Willow Lawn Drive, Richmond, Virginia 23230, Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Call Kristin Stokes or Kathleen Seal at 804-673-5035) or online at www.uvabookstores.com/mow. Ackerman To Receive Lifetime Achievement Award

    Virginia Athletic Media Relations
    Official Release

    Val Ackerman

Val Ackerman, a two-time Academic All-American forward at Virginia, current President of USA Basketball and former and founding President of the WNBA, will receive the 2008 John W. Bunn Lifetime Achievement Award from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame during enshrinement festivities Sept. 4-6 in Springfield, Mass.

The Bunn Lifetime Achievement Award was instituted by the Board of Trustees of the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1973 and is the most prestigious award presented by the Hall of Fame outside of Enshrinement. Named in honor of Hall of Famer John W. Bunn (Class of 1964), the first chairman of the Basketball Hall of Fame Committee who served from 1949-1964, this award honors coaches, players and contributors whose outstanding accomplishments have impacted the high school, college, professional or international game.

"Val's contributions to the growth and development of the game of basketball on all levels embodies the true spirit of this lifetime achievement award. Her service and visionary work span her career, from early roles within the NBA legal department to her groundbreaking work in launching the WNBA to her appointment as the first female President of USA Basketball", stated John L. Doleva, Hall of Fame President & CEO. "Val is held with the highest regard among her peers as an attorney, sports executive and former player. Her forward thinking approach gives confidence to the basketball community that the game's potential will continue to grow and evolve."

"This is a tremendous and very unexpected honor, and I'm deeply grateful to the Hall of Fame for the recognition", said Ackerman upon receiving the news. "It has been a privilege for me to work in basketball and to witness many of the exciting developments in our game over the past 20 years, especially in women's basketball, which I know will only continue to grow in popularity in the years to come."

Blog Banter: Sorting through the pieces after Lars

So, looking at the roster, I guess we could assume that Lars for Tunji was a one-for-one trade. I think with Lars, we're losing a good deal of energy and hustle on both ends. And this is in exchange for someone who hasn't played for a year.

Personally, I don't think it's an even exchange on the floor, but it's close. Tunji is better shot blocker, so he brings a different dimension on the court on defense. I prefer Lars on offense - I've always thought that Tunji had hands meant for swatting and not catching. How many well-placed Singletary passes have you seen careen off Tunji's hands and out of bounds? In the end, I give a small edge to Lars because he held his own on defense while bringing hustle and better offense.

    • Cavaliers Top Loyola 4-0 in Season Opener: The No. 7 Virginia women's soccer team opened up its 2008 season with a 4-0 victory over Loyola (Md.) Friday night at Klöckner Stadium. Kelly Quinn had her first multi-goal game of her career, scoring twice to lead the Cavaliers to their ninth consecutive season opening win. "This was a good result for us," said head coach Steve Swanson. "Coming into the first game of the season, you are always a little concerned. We knew that Loyola had a good team with a lot of returning players and having played here in the NCAA Tournament last year that they wouldn't be intimidated by the environment. We controlled the game early but it took us a while to get the first goal. The second one, with 16 seconds left in the half, was big because it gave us a little bit of a cushion."
    • Hucles Wins Second Olympic Gold Medal: Former Cavalier women's soccer player Angela Hucles won her second career Olympic gold medal Thursday as the United States defeated Brazil 1-0 in overtime in the Olympic Women's Soccer Tournament final. Hucles was also a member of the gold medal winning American team at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Hucles started all six games of the tournament for the United States and led the team in scoring with four goals at the Olympics. She was the second leading scorer in the tournament behind Brazil's Cristiane, who had five.
    • Krzysik Named to Hermann Trophy Watch List: Virginia senior defender Nikki Krzysik was one of 47 players named to the preseason watch list for the Hermann Trophy, annually given to the nation's top collegiate male and female soccer player. It marks the second consecutive year that Krzysik was named to the preseason watch list.
    • Men's Soccer Shuts Out ODU, 3-0, In Exhibition: Playing in its final preseason exhibition, the Virginia men's soccer team shut out Old Dominion, 3-0, Saturday night at Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers now turn their attention to the regular season, which begins this weekend with the Virginia Soccer Classic.
    • Orange Defeats Blue 3-2 in Preseason Scrimmage: The Virginia volleyball team, under the direction of first-year head coach Lee Maes, held its preseason scrimmage Saturday at Memorial Gymnasium. The Orange team defeated the Blue team 3-2. Game scores were 24-26, 25-22, 16-25, 25-17 and 15-12. The Cavaliers open the 2008 campaign at 5 p.m. Friday against Murray State in the JMU Tournament in Harrisonburg, Va.
    • Virginia's Monica Wright Named To Preseason "Wade Watch" List: Virginia junior guard Monica Wright has been named a member of the 2008-09 preseason "Wade Watch" list for the State Farm Wade Trophy Division I Player of the Year, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced Tuesday. Wright was an Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American last season after leading the Cavaliers in scoring (17.6 points per game) and steals (2.4 per game).
    • Tunji Soroye Returns To Virginia Men's Basketball Team: Virginia men's head basketball coach Dave Leitao announced on Monday that center Tunji Soroye is returning and will be a member of the 2008-09 team. Leitao also announced that forward Laurynas Mikalauskas is no longer a member of the Virginia team.

    Time To Panic Yet?

Image: Calvin BakerThe Virginia men's basketball team has lost five of its last six games, blowing second-half leads in three straight ACC losses. The Cavaliers' record now stands at 11-7 overall and 1-4 in the ACC. Obviously, things don't look good right now for the Hoos, particularly when you throw in the fact that Sean Singletary said he is nursing a bruised hip/hip pointer.

Last week, I was asked in radio interviews whether it was time to panic with this year's team. My answer was "not yet, but it is getting closer." The analogy I point to is a contestant on Deal or No Deal. The little plastic box is open, the red button is flashing, and a decision will be made soon.

So how do I feel after the Georgia Tech game? I'm still not sure it's time to panic, but that deal is looking more and more appealing. After all, there are two ways to look at this. The team is in last place in the ACC and ailing with injuries while the schedule features five road tests in the next seven games - the forecast doesn't look bright. Or, the team is only two wins behind the third place team in the league and the last three conference games have been close (two went to overtime) - the forecast is cloudy, but there's a chance of clearing.

GT coach Paul Hewitt thinks it is too early to start deciding who will end up where in the ACC.

"I think it's so early to talk about that, honestly. We're not even at the halfway point yet so there's a lot of time left; there's a lot of basketball left to play," Hewitt said. "We're just going to keep playing, and I'm sure Dave's going to have them keep playing. There's a long way to go."

So does UVa coach Dave Leitao see an added sense of urgency at 1-4?

"I operate that way game one, day one. There's always urgency," Leitao said. "You only get 30-some odd [games] a year and 365 days so every one is critically important in my book. It's not the end all, be all to it - the season didn't end today - but obviously at 1-4, it doesn't look as good as if you were 4-1. What that means is you wake up tomorrow and I don't think panic sets in or any of that stuff happens, but you certainly have to change your fortunes if you have any level of expectations."

In Case You Missed It ...

Sabre articles since the last SabreMail

    Hoo Preview '08: JHoo's 10 Things ...
Image: Cedric PeermanThe 2008 season is almost upon us and as in past seasons, I plan to discuss with you on a weekly basis what I learn about the Hoos in each game. That in turn begs the question of what I hope to learn over the course of the season. There are plenty of options. Quarterbacks, safeties, defensive pressure, playmakers, and so on. Let's see if we can limit that list to only 10 for now ...

Hoo Preview '08: Better Than Expected?
Image: Jed WilliamsIt's the oldest, most tired and trite motivational trick in the book - "no one thinks we're going to be any good." Everywhere you turn, a sports team has a mountainous chip on its shoulder. I understand why it's so popular. I subscribe to basic psychology (even passed the darn course at UVa) and so does any coach worth his clipboard - nothing gives a good kick in the butt quite like the "how-dare-they" belief that everyone else thinks you're going to get your butt kicked. I get that. And this year, for one ACC member in particular, the Freudian shoe fits.

    Hoo Preview '08: Quarterbacks
Image: Peter LalichThe countdown to kickoff with Southern California has reached single digits. The countdown to naming a starting quarterback at Virginia? It's probably on a similar, if not identical, timetable. Fifth-year senior Scott Deke, true sophomore Peter Lalich, and redshirt sophomore Marc Verica continue to battle it out with chances of more than one playing a distinct possibility.

Hoo Preview '08: Q&A With True Freshmen
For the true freshmen, the summer is a transition to college football but also to college life in general. The Sabre caught up with five of Virginia's incoming freshmen - Cam Johnson, Austin Pasztor, Colter Phillips, Buddy Ruff, and Billy Schautz - to get their early opinions of Virginia, learn what expectations they have for the upcoming season, their thoughts on some of their teammates and coaches, and much more.

    Hoo Preview '08: QB Quotables
The Virginia quarterbacks decided to remain silent during training camp, announcing their decision to decline media interviews at Meet the Team Day. Their teammates, however, have been fielding questions about the quarterbacks throughout. Here are some quotables about Scott Deke, Peter Lalich, and Marc Verica.

    Hoo Preview '08: Practice Photos
Image: Rashawn JacksonThe Virginia football team's big season opener against Southern California is just around the corner, but running back Rashawn Jackson and his teamates have been busy preparing for the 2008 season throughout August. The Sabre's Mike Ingalls ventured out to three practice sessions this fall to get you close to the action with some great photographs. The three image galleries feature 152 total photos, including fan favorites like Kevin Ogletree, Mikell Simpson, Clint Sintim, and more!

Hoo Preview '08: Cabbell Set For Challenge
Image: B.J. CabbellSophomore offensive lineman B.J. Cabbell knows that he has limited experience. After all, he has played in just four games in this college career with all of the snaps coming as a reserve guard or on the field goal team. That's quite a bit different than what he's about to experience when Southern California comes to town on Aug. 30.

    Hoo Preview '08: Offensive Line
Image: Eugene MonroeVirginia offensive line coach Dave Borbely leaned casually against the metal media barrier at Meet the Team Day. Casually fielding questions about his guys, he slipped in some humor, dropped some one-liners, and gave good background information on just about every projected starter. But one question I asked had his attention and his response had mine.

Hoo Preview '08: Bradley On Right Track
Image: Landon BradleyIn his short time at UVa, offensive lineman Landon Bradley has quickly gained the reputation of being a hard worker on the rise. Teammates and coaches alike have noticed his work ethic and coachability. And those compliments carry even more weight coming from a teammate of Eugene Monroe's caliber; the senior left tackle said the "very coachable" Bradley will "be a great player here."

Hoo Preview '08: Texas Tech East?
Image: Kevin OgletreeMuch has been made about Virginia offensive coordinator Mike Groh's offseason visit to Texas Tech. There are certainly elements of the Red Raider attack that any offense might want to implement. The intricacy of the pattern combinations, the multiple formations, the use of offensive linemen alignment to create space, and how to potentially assimilate some of it into the UVa offense is intriguing. That will be our focus as we take a look at the Red Raider offense. What is it? What makes it successful? What components might be melded with the Virginia system?

Hoo Preview '08: Cavalier Conversation - Covington
Image: Maurice CovingtonFor Maurice Covington, it felt like 2004 all over again. There he was on the practice field with his high school buddy Brandon Woods - both veteran players with starting roles and big dreams for the season ahead. But the similarities end there. Covington isn't a kid roaming high school hallways anymore. He's a 21-year-old man eyeing one final opportunity to build the career he always envisioned.

Hoo Preview '08: Jobe Keeps Proving Himself
Image: Staton JobeStaton Jobe is hoping to continue a unique tradition in Charlottesville. The list of walk-ons that have impacted Cavalier football history is deep - especially those that catch the football. Two of Virginia's most important current defenders, safety Byron Glaspy and linebacker Jon Copper are former walk-ons. The most well-known of Cavalier walk-ons might be the reigning NFC sack leader Patrick Kerney. And then there's a laundry list of prominent pass catchers like former UVa wideouts Derek Dooley, Keith Mattioli, Tim Finkelston, Bryan Owen, and, maybe the most notable, Patrick Jeffers.

    Hoo Preview '08: Wide Receivers
Image: Cary KochThings are looking up for UVa assistant coach Wayne Lineburg. Why? After frustrating injuries during Lineburg's first year on the staff last season, everything is finally starting to come together at the wide receiver position for Virginia. For the first time in quite a few years the questions surrounding the wide receiver position are more focused on who is throwing the ball rather than who is catching it.

Hoo Preview '08: Q&A With Jenkins
Image: Nick JenkinsIf you hadn't seen UVa redshirt freshman Nick Jenkins between Meet the Team Day in 2007 and 2008, you probably wouldn't recognize him. A year ago, he entered camp listed at 6'3", 315 pounds. His head was shaved and he was working behind two experienced players. In 2008, Jenkins is listed at a 6'3", 285 pounds and much more athletic and built. His head now sports floppy hair and he's in the trenches taking reps with the first- and second-team units.

Hoo Preview '08: Conrath Vies For Time
Image: Matt ConrathFor anyone still mourning the loss of All-everything defensive end Chris Long, take notice. Another high-octane defensive end is waiting in the wings in Matt Conrath. The redshirt freshman, however, says he doesn't in any way think he compares to Long, though he credits him for being a good mentor for playing defensive end in the 3-4 defense.

    Hoo Preview '08: Defensive Line
Image: Nate CollinsWith the loss of three starters, the defensive line position is one of the biggest unknowns for the Virginia football team in 2008. Consider that dynamic ends Chris Long and Jeffrey Fitzgerald, the tone-setters and key disruptors on last year's successful unit, represent two of lost starters, and the uncertainty is even greater. Still, there appears to be a fair amount of talent in place on the D-Line with the likes of Alex Field, Matt Conrath, Nate Collins, and Nick Jenkins in the mix.
