Women's Swimming Wins ACC Title

Official Release
UVa Athletic Media Relations

The Virginia women's swimming and diving team won the 2008 ACC Championship in spectacular fashion Saturday, besting second-place North Carolina by 228 points on the campus of Georgia Tech. This marks Virginia's sixth ACC women's championship, with the last coming in 2004. Virginia finished the four-day competition with 800 points; North Carolina was second (572) while Florida State placed third (544.5).

UVa comes home with three relay titles and three individual titles; all the individual titles were won by freshmen.

Rookie Liz Shaw was the epitome of dominance in the 200 fly on the final day of the event, setting her second ACC meet record in the preliminaries and then breaking it later in the finals. Her winning time of 1:56.07 also broke the conference record she set earlier in the season in the dual meet against North Carolina. Shaw automatically qualified for NCAAs. Hannah Davis, Stephanie Glover, Megan Evo, and Jessica Lewis teamed up to set a conference record and an ACC meet record in the 400 free relay, finishing in 3:18.69 to capture the crown. That time was just .3 seconds short of an NCAA 'A' standard.

In the 200 back, Mei Christensen put in a solid performance, placing second and automatically qualifying for NCAAs with a time of 1:56.27

This Week In Recruiting

Football recruiting ...

There was a nice turnout of 2009 recruits for Sunday's junior day atVirginia. So far, we have caught up with Liberty (Bealeton, VA) safety Corey Lillard, Sherando (Stephens City, VA) quarterback Ross Metheny, Cardinal O'Hara (Springfield, PA) quarterback Tom Savage, and Brookville (Lynchburg, VA) quarterback/athlete Logan Thomas. Stay tuned for Edge updates on each of these prospects over the next few days.

Of the four prospects mentioned above, Virginia has offered three. Lillard and Thomas had offers prior to the visit, while the 6'5", 220-pound Savage left Charlottesville with an offer. Metheny, a 6'3" lefty signal caller, did not receive an offer but had a great experience and received high compliments from the staff.

Other prospects confirmed to have been in attendance include Meadowbrook (Richmond, VA) offensive lineman Morgan Moses, Harrisonburg (VA) running back Alex Owah, and George Washington (Danville, VA) running back David Wilson. Certainly there were many more juniors in attendance, so stay tuned for more updates throughout the week.

At least two prospects did not make the trek to Charlottesville. Lackey (Indian Head, MD) cornerback Darrell Givens and Catholic Memorial (West Roxbury, MA) offensive lineman/defensive lineman Brennan Williams were not able to attend, but Givens plans to reschedule and Williams has already visited UVa on two occasions. Stay tuned for updates on these two this week.

Basketball recruiting ...

As expected, Holy Cross (Flushing, N.Y.) guard/forward Sylven Landesberg was named to the 2008 McDonald's All-American team. Landesberg, who is UVa's most highly rated recruit in the 2008 class, was also named the Catholic High School Athletic Association Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. He earned the Player of the Year nod over Rice (New York, N.Y.) guard Kemba Walker, a fellow McDonald's All-American who signed with UConn last November.

The CHSAA intersectional playoffs begin this week. Holy Cross will play on Friday against the winner of the St. Francis Prep/St. Peter's game.

DeSmet Jesuit (St. Louis, MO) captured the Class 5, District 3 Championship with a 70-54 win over Ritenour on Saturday. Led by Virginia recruit John Brandenburg, who finished with 21 points, the Spartans outscored the Huskies 36-15 in the first two quarters and never relinquished.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

O'Hara Star QB to Visit UVa
6-5, 220-pound Cardinal O'Hara (Philadelphia, PA) quarterback Tom Savage plans to be in Charlottesville on Sunday for the University of Virginia's football junior day. Savage, a top prospect who holds about 15 Division 1A scholarship offers according to Cardinal O'Hara head coach Dan Algeo, expects to return home on Sunday with a new offer in the fold.

"Baby D" Coming Off Huge Junior Season
Phoebus (Hampton, VA) junior Dominik "Baby D" Davenport is, quite simply, a football player. Possessing a great knowledge and feel for the game, he is affectionately referred to as "Coach Davenport" by his fellow teammates. The 6-1, 240-pound prospect has earned the respect of opposing coaches as well, as he was recently named second-team offensive guard and first-team defensive lineman by the Virginia High School Coach Associatio

A Look Inside Steve Greer's Recruiting Process
Image: Steve GreerOn January 31st, hours after returning from an official visit to the University of Virginia, Solon (OH) linebacker Steve Greer made a verbal commitment to head coach Al Groh. He would sign a letter of intent with UVa on February 6th, marking the end of a long recruiting process for the 6-2, 218-pound prospect. To take a deeper look into Greer's recruiting process, TheSabre.com caught up with Solon head coach Jim McQuaide.

Must-Read Article

730: The magic number. After four years and 124 starts, that number, and the ACC career assists record, was Sharneé Zoll's. Zoll managed seven assists in Virginia's Thursday night 83-71 victory over Clemson, moving her past former UVa great Dawn Staley to the top of the ACC all-time career assists list. Zoll's performance gives her 731 assists for her career. Number 730 came early in the second half, as Zoll executed a beautiful alley-oop to Monica Wright amidst huge cheers and a standing ovation from the crowd and the bench.

"Words can't describe what a dream this has been," Virginia Coach Debbie Ryan said. "I've gotten a chance to coach two of the greatest players in women's college basketball history, Sharneé and Dawn. I'm blessed and honored to be their coach. I'm sure Sharneé watched Dawn growing up, and with her as a model, she's going to be an incredible person and player."

  • Virginia Holds Off Stony Brook in 15-13 Win: Virginia scored the final two goals of the game to gain a hard fought 15-13 win over Stony Brook Saturday afternoon at Klöckner Stadium. The win is the second in a row for the third-ranked Cavaliers, while the Seawolves dropped their season opener. "It was the craziest, most intense dual meet I've ever been involved in," Virginia head coach Steve Garland said. "I had people come up to me after the match saying it was the most intense match they have ever seen. But it was an absolute heartbreaker for us. If this doesn't show our guys they can win the ACC title, then nothing will. Maryland is an awesome team and we went toe-to-toe with them.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Roman Catholic (Philadelphia, Pa.) defensive back Dom Joseph verbally committed to UVa last Friday, becoming the second player to commit to the Hoos in the 2007 recruiting class.

Joseph is a 6-0, 190-pound prospect who has played safety his sophomore and junior seasons. As a junior, he tallied a total of six interceptions on the year including two in one game. Joseph, who had interest from other schools such as Boston College, Iowa and Pitt, is being recruited by Virginia as a cornerback, which is the position he wanted to play coming into high school.

Joseph excels in baseball as well and hopes to play both football and baseball at Virginia. He plays centerfield for the Roman Catholic varsity squad.

Joseph is not only the second player to commit overall, but he is the second player projected on the defensive side of the ball. UVa's first commitment was from Woodside (Newport News, Va.) inside linebacker prospect Jared Detrick. Detrick is a 6-2, 230-pound player with good athleticism.

Defensive Effort Helps Hoos Top NCSU
Image: Sean SingletaryThe Virginia men's basketball team dominated the defensive end of the floor for the first 20 minutes - including six first-half steals from Sean Singletary - and visiting N.C. State never fully recovered Sunday as the Cavaliers took the 78-60 victory. Just how dominant was the first-half performance? Heck, it even impressed Dave Leitao, a notorious stickler when it comes to defense.

UVa Edges Stony Brook
Image: Danny GladingAfter the Virginia men's lacrosse team knocked off Drexel to open the season, all memories of the last-second 11-10 defeat to Drexel at the beginning of last season seemed to fade. After Stony Brook recovered from a 9-2 deficit on Saturday to knot the score at 12 late in the third period, however, one could not help but replay last season's upset once more. The Cavaliers, however, showed a resiliency late that may have finally put that upset to rest for good, as Virginia ultimately triumphed 15-13.

Quick Take With Ted Angelinos
Image: Ted AngelinosThe Virginia men's tennis team is off to a roaring start in 2008, posting an 11-0 record thus far while owning the nation's No. 1 ranking. The Hoos won the ITA National Team Indoor Tournament earlier this week. Among the many stars on the roster is senior Ted Angelinos, who has been a huge part of the Cavaliers' success with a record of 8-0 in singles and 6-2 in doubles. The Sabre caught up with the Greece native for a quick take on men's tennis.

5 Questions For O'Connor's Cavs
Image: Brian O'ConnorThe Virginia baseball team is coming off another NCAA Tournament season - the fourth consecutive tourney season under Brian O'Connor. But for the fourth time in as many years, the Wahoos failed to advance to an NCAA Super Regional. The Hoos fell to eventual National Champion Oregon State, handing the Beavers their only NCAA Tournament loss as OSU claimed back-to-back College World Series titles.

Best Seat In The House: Bob Pruett
Image: Coach Bob PruettVirginia welcomed coach Bob Pruett to the football program last week when he was announced as the new defensive coordinator for the Cavaliers. Pruett most recently was the head coach at Marshall, directing the Thundering Herd to a 94-23 record (.803) over nine seasons. Pruett joined Jay James on The Best Seat in the House to talk about UVa, his coaching career, his relationship with Al Groh, and more. Check out the free audio interview.

Weymouth, Draws To Play Key Roles
Image: Coach Julie MyersThe Virginia women's lacrosse team opened its season with a 14-6 win over in-state rival Virginia Tech on Wednesday. Julie Myers' Cavaliers showed just how much depth and talent they have in the fold as nine different players posted points in the victory. Jenny Hauser and Ashley McCulloch led the way with 4 points each while Megan O'Malley and Brittany Kalkstein contributed 3 goals each.

Photo Gallery: Virginia Vs. UNC
Image: Sean SingletaryAfter slumping for much of 2008, the Virginia men's basketball team nearly upset North Carolina and won at Boston College. Sean Singletary and the Hoos will try to keep the positive momentum rolling tonight against Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Get ready for the ACC contest with this photo gallery of UVa against UNC.

Best Seat In The House: Brian Boland
Image: Coach Brian BolandThe Virginia men's tennis team claimed the ITA National Team Indoor Championship on Monday, becoming the first ACC school and just the 11th different program ever to win the 34-year event. Coach Brian Boland joined Jay James on The Best Seat in the House this week to talk about the title, his No. 1 Cavaliers (11-0), and this weekend's matches. Check out the free audio.

Goal-Oriented Cavs Open Season
Image: Megan O'Malley"We want to win a national championship," says senior captain Megan O'Malley. "We came so close last year and that's not good enough for us. We want to fight and work that much harder to get back to where we were but actually finish it this year and win a title." And with that goal firmly in mind, the Virginia women's lacrosse team opens the 2007 season.

FanWatch: UVA91 DUKE89's Streak Grows
Image: David Scott, UVA91 DUKE89David Scott, UVA91 DUKE89, attends James Madison University in Harrisonburg, but on most Saturdays in the fall, his heart lies eastward. That's because Scott has been a life-long UVa fan and he passionately supports the Hoos, particularly during football season. In fact, he hasn't missed a Virginia home football game since 1994, a streak that he doesn't see ending any time soon.
