Report: London Interviewing At Richmond

When the University of Richmond head football coaching job came open last week, speculation immediately included Virginia defensive coordinator Mike London as a candidate. London, a graduate of UR, has experience throughout the college and pro ranks, but has never been a head coach so the opportunity is viewed as a potentially good move for his career.

Well speculation of mutual interest has turned to confirmation, according to a report by Jay Jenkins from The Daily Progress in Charlottesville. The newspaper, citing multiple sources, said London is interviewing today with Richmond.

Stay tuned for further developments.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Football recruiting ...

This past weekend was a big one for Virginia's recruiting efforts, as 6-7, 275-pound offensive tackle R.J. Mattes made an official visit to Clemson. Mattes, a 4-star prospect and Virginia's top remaining target in this class, has one more official visit remaining - a trip to South Carolina this weekend - before he makes his college choice.

Clemson is thought to be very high on the Robinson (Concord, N.C.) star's list, so this past weekend's experience was extremely important. Stay tuned, as we will check in with Mattes for comments on the official visit experience as well as his upcoming decision. At this point, we feel this race will come down to Clemson, N.C. State, and Virginia, though Mattes has not yet ruled out North Carolina and South Carolina.

Another top remaining target, Chamblee (GA) OL/DT Omoregie Uzzi, was scheduled to make the first of three January official visits this past weekend. The 6-3, 300-pound prospect was scheduled to head to Alabama, so we will check in with him for comments on the visit. Uzzi plans to visit Georgia Tech this coming weekend and Virginia on the weekend of the 25th before making a decision.

Also stay tuned this week for the latest on other top remaining targets including Pennsylvania CB Jarred Holley, Virginia WR A.J. Price, and Pennsylvania LB/H-Back Christian Wilson. Checkout the EDGE update below on Price, who plans to make an official visit to Penn State this coming weekend. Virginia is hoping to host Holley and Wilson on official visits this month and possibly as soon as this coming weekend.

The Contact period has resumed, so look for the staff to hit the road for in-home and in-school visits in the coming weeks. With only a little more than three weeks until Signing Day, now is indeed crunch time for college coaches to make strides with top targets.

Basketball recruiting ...

DeSmet Jesuit (St. Louis, MO) had two games last week, winning the first and losing the second to move to 8-7 on the season. In fact, DeSmet had a four-game winning streak until it was snapped by a 12-2 Chaminade squad on Friday night.

In Tuesday night's 49-40 win over Riverview Gardens, Virginia low post recruit John Brandenburg tallied 15 points and 8 rebounds. Brandenburg, a 6-11, 235-pound senior, made 7 of 8 free throw attempts in the win. In a 3-point loss on Friday night, Brandenburg scored 10 points, hauled in 8 rebounds and had four blocks.

I hope to catch up with John for comments on his recent performances as well as his entire senior season this week, so stay tuned.

In case you missed it, check out the EDGE article below on top recruit Sylven Landesberg. Landesberg, a 6-6, 195-pound guard/forward out of Holy Cross High School (Flushing, N.Y.) became his school's all-time leading scorer last month, taking the top sport previously held by former Virginia guard Willie Dersch.

Landesberg, who is averaging 27.9 points, 12.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game, had led Holy Cross to a 10-2 record this season and Holy Cross' first ever ranking in the USA Today Super Top 25. Holy Cross is the 22nd best team in the nation according to USA Today.

Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

A.J. Price Decision Coming Soon?
South Lakes (Reston, VA) wide receiver A.J. Price has not heard from Michigan recently, all but assuring that his decision will come down to two schools - Penn State and Virginia. The 6-4, 170-pound senior, a first-team all-Liberty district and second-team Washington Post all-metro selection in 2007, will head to State College this weekend for what could be his final visit before making a college choice.

Georgia Star Sets Three Visits
Image: Omoregie UzziUVa is one of three finalists for offensive guard/defensive tackle Omoregie Uzzi, but for now the staff is just hoping to get the star prospect in for an official visit. The 6-3, 300-pound recruit out of Chamblee High School (GA) seems poised to make official visits to all three of his finalists this month, beginning with Alabama this weekend.

Countdown to Signing Day: The Final Stretch
In less than four weeks, high school seniors will sign on the dotted line and make it official. Four weeks from today is Signing Day. The ensuing four weeks, however, is the final stretch for college coaches to try to reel in those remaining targets and to put the finishing touches on this 2008 class.

In Case You Missed It ...

Sabre articles since the last SabreMail

Cavs' Cameron Drought Continues
Image: Dave LeitaoThe Virginia men's basketball team picked up right where it left off on Sunday night at Duke. Obviously for Dave Leitao and the Cavaliers, that wasn't a good thing considering where they left off was a 38-point demolition at Xavier. Simply put, the Hoos again gave up too many open looks and lay-ups defensively while struggling to score offensively. The Blue Devils took full advantage in an 87-65 blowout of the Cavs, who trailed by double digits for much of the game and never threatened.

Big Crowd Watches UVa Women Top VT
It's safe to say at this point that the Virginia women's basketball team is on a roll. The Cavaliers have won seven straight games, dating back to an early December loss at Connecticut. And the Hoos aren't just winning. They're winning big. In fact, Sunday's 70-57 victory against Virginia Tech is the closest margin of victory for UVa since its trip to Hawaii in November.

Greg's Game Grades '07: Gator Bowl
Image: Gator BowlAl Groh often stated in the weeks leading up to the Gator Bowl that a victory would require exceptional play from all three operations - the offense, defense and special teams. Well, the Cavalier special teams, as it has all season, delivered a mixed-bag performance and while the offense was effective at times, second half breakdowns doomed the Hoos.

Sabre Roundtable: ACC Ready?
Image: Sean SingletaryThe Virginia men's basketball team is working through one final lengthy break before starting ACC play this weekend at Duke. Are Sean Singletary and the 10-3 Cavaliers ready for conference play? This Sabre Roundtable answers that question and more as three media heavyweights - Richmond Times-Dispatch beat writer Jeff White, WCAV TV sports anchor Marc Davis, and Sabre Editor Kris Wright - weigh in on the Hoos.

Photo Gallery: Gator Bowl
Image: Chris LongThe Virginia football team's successful 9-win season ended on Jan. 1 with a disappointing loss to Texas Tech in the Gator Bowl. It marked the last game for seniors like Chris Long, Nate Lyles, and Ian-Yates Cunningham. The Gator Bowl also provided a glimpse at the continued emergence of Mikell Simpson, who set a bowl record for running backs with a 96-yard touchdown run. Check out the action from Jacksonville in this gallery.

JHoo: 10 Things I Learned Vs. Texas Tech
For three and a half quarters, I thought that the Gator Bowl represented as good a game as we have seen during the Al Groh era in terms of the quality of both the game plan and the execution of that plan. And then ... ugh. Breaking down the game admittedly is not a lot of fun, but that's the task before us.
