This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Basketball recruiting ...

Things will start to heat up for the University of Virginia this week as Holy Cross (Queens, N.Y.) star senior guard Sylven Landesberg is expected to make a visit. At last check, the 6-5 prospect was scheduled to arrive in Charlottesville on Aug. 30 and expects to stay five days.

Rated a 5-star prospect by Scout.com and a 4-star prospect by Rivals.com, Landesberg averaged 27 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists last season as a junior. He earned top scholarship offers from throughout the country, recently narrowing his list to Georgia Tech, Kentucky, St. John's, Texas, and Virginia.

This week's visit will be Landesberg's second experience at UVa. He attended the NBPA Top 100 camp in June as well. Although he could not tour the grounds or speak with the coaches, he was able to check out the town and, of course, get a look at the John Paul Jones Arena (which he was very impressed with).

Landesberg also has an official visit set to Georgia Tech for the weekend of Sept. 15 and is considering a trip to Kentucky as well. He has never visited either of those programs, but has tripped to St. John's and Texas. This week will be huge for the Cavs so stay tuned for the latest once he completes the visit.

Virginia will host another top target on the weekend of Sept. 9. 6-11, 230-pound center John Brandenburg, a 4-star recruit out of De Smet Jesuit (St. Louis, MO), will make his official visit to UVa at that time. He has already made a visit to Stanford, which is the other finalist in this race. He loved that experience, but Virginia will have its shot soon.

Brandenburg is UVa's top target at the center position.

While things will certainly get rolling on the 2008 class front in the month of September (as more visitors are expected as well), Virginia hosted a top prospect from the 2009 class this past Saturday. 6-9, 190-pound junior center Ryan Kelly visited Charlottesville alongside his parents.

As a junior last season, Kelly averaged 14 points, 9 rebounds, and 4.5 blocks per game in helping Ravenscroft (Raleigh, N.C.) to a conference championship.

Kelly, who has been offered by Virginia, N.C. State, and Virginia Tech, among others, discussed the visit with TheSabre.com last night. Stay tuned to the EDGE for a full report.

Football recruiting ...

This week, we plan to follow up with more important targets in the 2008 recruiting class, including Christchurch (VA) star receiver Deion Walker, Easton (PA) cornerback/wide receiver Jarred Holley, and more. Coaches can resume phone call contact on Sept. 1, so the recruiting season is really going to get started in the coming week.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Top Guard to Visit UVa Soon
Image: Sylven Landesberg6-5, 195-pound guard Sylven Landesberg, a star rising senior out of Holy Cross High School (Queens, N.Y.), has planned two more visits. These visits could be his final experiences before he comes to a decision, something he would like to do as early as next month.

Top Target Saddler Ready for Busy September
Gateway (Monroeville, PA) dynamo athlete Cameron Saddler heads into the start of his senior season having set three of four planned official visits. The multi-talented prospect - a 5-7, 165-pound running back, wide receiver, and return-man extraordinaire - will visit Charlottesville next month.

Around the World of Wahoo Sports ...

  • Men's Soccer Downs South Florida 1-0 in Exhibition: After inclement weather altered its preseason schedule several times, the Virginia men's soccer team finally made its 2007 debut, downing South Florida 1-0 in an exhibition Sunday morning at Klöckner Stadium. Jeremy Barlow's goal in the 21st minute was all the Cavaliers needed to post the victory.
  • Women's Soccer Defeated by Connecticut 2-1 in Exhibition: The No. 11 Virginia women's soccer team concluded its preseason schedule on Sunday, falling to No. 10 Connecticut 2-1 in an exhibition game at Klöckner Stadium. The Huskies led 1-0 after 90 minutes, but the coaches decided to play two overtimes and each team scored once after regulation.
  • Field Hockey Falls to No. 7 Penn State 3-1: Virginia's Traci Ragukas scored the opening goal of the match against No. 7 Penn State (2-0), but the Nittany Lions scored the final three goals of the game to take the victory with a 3-1 decision.
  • Volleyball Wins Two Matches: The Virginia volleyball team defeated Texas Tech and Arizona State before losing to UNLV in the Las Vegas Tournament. In the season-opening win against Texas Tech, Sarah Kirkwood set the program record for career service aces after she produced seven against the Red Raiders. In the win over Arizona State (the first time in program history that Virginia has beaten a Pac-10 school), Shannon Davis had a solid afternoon with eight kills and eight blocks. In the UNLV loss, Lauren Dickson paced Virginia with 12 kills. Kirkwood was named to the all-tournament team.
  • Men's Basketball Schedule Features 17 Home Games: A 17-game home schedule, featuring eight games against Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponents and a visit by Big East Conference member Syracuse, highlight the Virginia men's basketball team's 2007-08 schedule released Thursday.
  • UVa Diving Coach Fafara Retires: Dave Fafara, longtime Virginia men's and women's diving coach, announced Friday he is retiring from coaching. Fafara held the post at UVa for 18 years before officially deciding his business interests were becoming too time consuming to devote the time necessary to coach.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

George Welsh
John Phillips
With two more commitments this week, UVa is now up to seven verbal commitments for the 2005 recruiting class. Five of those commits are in-state, with the others being from Pennsylvania (The Haverford School OL Will Barker) and North Carolina (Southern Durham WR/OLB Maurice Covington).

This week the Cavaliers landed commitments from Bath County HS (VA) tight end John Phillips and North Stafford HS (VA) offensive lineman Patrick Slebonick.

Phillips, a 6-6, 240-pound prospect, chose the 'Hoos over an offer from Virginia Tech. William & Mary, which his brother Jacob will attend next year on a football scholarship, also was seriously in the running. UNC was heavily recruiting him as well.

Slebonick gave his verbal this morning to Coach Groh and company. At 6-4, 290 pounds, he is a prototypical offensive line prospect who could end up anywhere on the line. He boasted offers from Virginia Tech and N.C. State, with Maryland, Tennessee, and West Virginia among the other schools giving him serious looks.

10-Day Hoo Preview '07: JHoo's 10 Things
Image: Al GrohThe 2007 season has a very strange feeling to it already. Hoos fans cannot seem to decide whether to be optimistic or pessimistic, excited or deflated, anxious or nervous ... and I can understand why. I am not sure I can remember breaking down a team that had such potential for success while at the same time having so many legitimate question marks. What are those question marks? What key indicators will I be watching this season? Here are 10 Things To Watch as Al Groh and the Cavaliers prepare for 2007.

10-Day Hoo Preview '07: Schedule, Part II
Image: Virginia CavaliersMany people - from fans to media experts - are forecasting a good start for Virginia this season. Predictions range from a 7-0 start to a 5-2 run to open the season. Of course, that's all on paper and the players on the field will decide what ultimately happens. One thing figures to be true, though: UVa's schedule figures to get tougher in the second half of the season. Part II of The Sabre's schedule analysis looks at the final six games.

10-Day Hoo Preview '07: Schedule, Part I
The Sabre's 10-Day Hoo Preview has kept tabs on Virginia so far, but now its time to look at the opponents. The Cavaliers, of course, open on the first Saturday in September with a long trip to Wyoming. What do the Cavs' chances look like in Laramie? The first part of the schedule analysis looks at the Cowboys and the first half of UVa's season.

10-Day Hoo Preview '07: WCAV Roundtable
Image: WCAV TVWith Virginia's season a little more than one week away, The Sabre asked its video partners from WCAV to answer some quick questions about the Cavaliers. Anchors Marc Davis, J.W. Stehle, Dave Strumpf, and Kris Budden tackle 5 questions about which Hoos they're waiting to watch this season. Check out their answers in this Sabre Roundtable.

10-Day Hoo Preview '07: True Freshmen
Image: Peter LalichVirginia's freshman class features 24 talented athletes that should bolster the program's depth this season and beyond. Among the highly touted recruits is quarterback Peter Lalich, a player many fans can't wait to see. Sabre recruiting analyst Chris Horne, who followed all of the players through the recruiting process, caught up with Lalich, Dontrelle Inman, J'Courtney Williams, and others to talk about their early days at UVa.

10-Day Hoo Preview '07: First Year Alum
Image: 5ftHooFor the past five football seasons, I've used my student ID to swipe into games. For the past four football seasons, I've gone to work on the Corner on gameday mornings before heading over to Scott Stadium. Now, as a first year alum, I no longer carry my student ID, and I don't have to work on the weekends. There are a lot of things that will be different going into this football season compared to my five, yes, five years as an undergrad. But the one change I am looking forward to the most is definitely my gameday experience.

10-Day Hoo Preview '07: Jenkins Hopes To Play
Image: Nick JenkinsTo redshirt or not to redshirt? That is the question facing college football coaches throughout the nation every fall. As was the case with Virginia's 2006 recruiting class, a vast majority of the 2007 class looks destined to wear red this year. But there are several true freshmen making a strong claim for playing time, including is nose tackle Nick Jenkins.

10-Day Hoo Preview '07: Defensive Backs
Image: Nate LylesAdmit it. At least once this offseason, you've had a thought like this: If the secondary can just get its act together, the Virginia defense could be dominant in 2007. It's O.K. It's no secret that the Cavalier secondary gave up too many big plays in 2006, which prevented a great defense from being dominant. The defensive backs have heard those whispers for an entire offseason and they insist they're ready to tell a different story this time around.

10-Day Hoo Preview '07: DB Duo In The Mix
Image: Mike ParkerMike Parker and Trey Womack may not start a game this season, but do not underestimate their importance to the success of Virginia's secondary. These two redshirt freshmen are eager to show what they can do on the field and each will likely make contributions in the nickel package on long-yardage situations as well as on special teams.

10-Day Hoo Preview '07: Linebackers
Image: Jermaine DiasWhen the 2006 season began, the linebacker corps appeared to be a big question mark for the Cavaliers. Outside linebacker Jermaine Dias had six career starts and inside backers Antonio Appleby and Jon Copper had combined for two. The only proven commodity in the group was outside linebacker Clint Sintim. While at times there were lapses in the play of the linebackers, the general postseason consensus was that this group was an essential part of the success for the nation's 17th-ranked defense.

Best Seat in the House: Norman Nolan
During his career at Virginia, Norman Nolan developed into a reliable low-post player on both ends of the floor. Nolan, who played at UVa from 1995-98, finished his career with 1,321 points, including 630 in his final season (that tops Ralph Sampson's best single season output). Nolan led the team in rebounding for three straight seasons and piled up 26 career double-doubles. Jay James welcomed the former Cavalier standout to The Best Seat in the House - check out the free audio interview.

10-Day Hoo Preview '07: Q&A - John-Kevin Dolce
Image: John-Kevin DolceJohn-Kevin Dolce signed with the University of Virginia out of St. Anthony's (Long Island, N.Y.), a school that boasts one of the top football programs in New York. A defensive end in high school, Dolce was recruited by Virginia to play the outside linebacker position. He redshirted in his freshman year but hopes to see some action this upcoming season.

10-Day Hoo Preview '07: Practice Photos
Image: Jameel SewellTraining camp rolls on for the Virginia football team, which opens its season on Sept. 1 at Wyoming. Jameel Sewell and the Cavaliers begin preparing for the Cowboys in the coming days, but first take a quick look back at the open practice sessions. There are 109 photos in the two galleries, including shots of Sewell, Vic Hall, Al Groh, Dontrelle Inman, Eugene Monroe, and many more.

10-Day Hoo Preview '07: Collins Catching On
Image: Nate CollinsWhen he came to Virginia, Nate Collins knew very little about playing nose tackle. Sure, he had taken a few snaps on the defensive line in high school, but he says that the exposure was limited to basics. In other words, just go out there and create some havoc. He's already figured that part out at UVa too.

10-Day Hoo Preview '07: Q&A - Jeffrey Fitzgerald
Image: Jeffrey FitzgeraldJeffrey Fitzgerald jumped on the scene in 2006 and "snuck" up on opposing teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The redshirt made one of the most surprising splashes in the league, going from an unknown name to a defensive force and a freshman All-American. Before he begins crashing backfields in Laramie and Chapel Hill, Fitzgerald sat down with ESPN 840's Wes McElroy to talk about the 2007 Virginia team, his tag team partner Chris Long, and the urge to return kickoffs.

10-Day Hoo Preview '07: Defensive Line
Image: Chris LongThe defensive line was one of Virginia's areas of strength in 2006. The stellar play of Chris Long and the emergence of Jeffrey Fitzgerald gave Cavalier fans a reason to tune in each week and also be hopeful about the 2007 season. That 2007 season is now upon us and every indicator points toward another great season from the defensive line.
