Hungry For Football Discussion?

The Michael Vick saga has dominated sports headlines around the country recently, but some Sabre posters don't think it should dominate the discussion on the football message board. As a Wahoo and UVa graduate, I tend to agree. But here's the catch: EVERYONE controls the message board topics! So if you want less Vick, then you need to help do something about it.

The board had several great threads on Friday thanks to a few simple starter posts that got people thinking and talking. Check out these threads for inspiration and then hit the football message board to start your own hot topic today!

Don't have a message board user name? It's easy to get in on the action. Just follow this link and join the conversation with your fellow Hoos.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

SabreMail subscribers,

Just wanted to let you know that I'll be on vacation this week. I will return next Monday with my usual football and basketball recruiting updates. Also, look for a new "Countdown to Signing Day," a complete look at Virginia's 2008 football recruiting class. I will analyze what has taken place thus far and what may lie ahead in the months to come before National Signing Day. On the basketball side of things, I will look into where coach Leitao and company will go from here in the 2008 class in light of Ed Davis' recent decision. Virginia is in hot pursuit of star guard Elliot Williams, guard/forward Sylven Landesberg and center John Brandenburg, but we'll also look at other potential targets that could fill the three scholarship spots.

Have a great week. I look forward to returning!

Lacrosse recruiting ...

Virginia landed the top lacrosse recruiting class in the country in 2007, landing nine Under Armour All-Americans. TheSabre.com will feature three of the Cavs top recruits and provide a look into Dom Starsia's incoming freshman class this week. Huntington (N.Y.) Shamel Bratton was rated the #1 player in the county by RISE.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. To sign up for an Edge subscription, please check out the Sabre Edge Sign Up and Information Page. If you're already on board as an Edge subscriber, click the links below to catch up on recruiting.

Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

The Christchurch (VA) star, rated a 4-star prospect by TheSabre.com, discussed his recent trip and updated his recruitment as well.

The Latest on Marcus Davis
Image: Marcus Davis6-5, 215-pound Marcus Davis, a star out ATH of Ocean Lakes High School in Virginia Beach, has only made visits to Virginia Tech and Virginia these past few months. He has mainly been focused on lifting weights with his teammates, preparing for his upcoming senior season. Davis took time to discuss his recruitment, which has not changed too much recently.

Cavs fading down the stretch

Sean Singletary has been a bright spot in a dismal season.

How sorry is this? Virginia's game at Florida State on Sunday will be the battle for last place in the ACC. The Cavaliers weren't expected to be an upper-echelon team in the conference, but they sure weren't supposed to be the worst.

Yet that's the position the Wahoos put themselves in by losing their last four games, including two in the past week. They are 4-11 in the ACC and could fall into a last-place tie with the Seminoles if they lose in Tallahassee. In that case, FSU would win the tiebreaker and Virginia would be the bottom seed in the ACC tournament next week.

Last Sunday's loss at Wake Forest and Wednesday's home defeat at the hands of N.C. State were like so many UVa games this season. Bad defense, weak rebounding and a lack of hustle and heart doomed the 'Hoos, who seem ready for this season to come to an end.

   What's New on TheSabre.com?

ACC Football Kickoff 2007: Players Ready
PINEHURST, N.C. - August is just days away and football fans are anxiously - to say the least - awaiting the start of fall practice. The Atlantic Coast Conference is getting a jumpstart on the upcoming season this weekend with the annual ACC Football Kickoff event for all 12 league teams. ESPN 840 AM's (Charlottesville) Wes McElroy trekked to the Tar Heel State for the festivities and he checks in with a report from around the ACC.

JHoo's Summer Reading: Defensive Line
Image: Jeffrey FitzgeraldSince Al Groh arrived in Charlottesville and installed his version of the 3-4 defense, I have had annual concerns about whether we had he personnel on the defensive line to properly execute the defense. That is, until this year. Chris Long is an All-American candidate. Jeffrey Fitzgerald may be down the road. And at defensive tackle, the rotation should be up to the task. Add to that a talented depth chart, and you can understand why the defensive staff is looking forward to rolling out this unit for the 2007 season.

Best Seat in the House: Debbie Ryan
Image: Coach Debbie RyanVirginia women's basketball coach Debbie Ryan has been named to the Class of 2008 for induction into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame. Ryan has won 651 games and earned the ACC Coach of the Year Award seven times in her career at UVa. The 30-year coach of the Hoos joined Jay james on The Best Seat in the House to talk about the recent announcement.
