Wahoo Fans Wait On Singletary's Decision

Virginia junior point guard Sean Singletary had until June 18 to make a decision on whether to stay in the NBA Draft or return to UVa for his senior season. As if we have to tell you: THAT'S TODAY!

Obviously, Wahoo fans are sweating it out while waiting for any news on Singletary's decision. If he returns, the chances of another strong season and a return to the NCAA Tournament in March 2008 are heavily bolstered. If he leaves, the Cavaliers will have one of the youngest backcourts in the ACC and beyond, meaning a return trip to the Big Dance would be a stiff challenge. Of course, that's from the perspective of the team and program.

For Singletary, the decision hinges on whether he is ready as an individual to make the jump to the NBA. There have been numerous reports on the process and in each one, Singletary has not given a strong indication of what his decision might be. The only thing that seems certain is that his likely draft position - he's projected as a second-rounder at best - will not be the sole determing factor. Instead, he has indicated that he will make the best decision for himself and his family, regardless of the experts' projections.

Stay tuned. The Sabre will bring you the news on Singletary's decision as soon as it breaks!

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Football recruiting ...

Once again, Virginia's June Elite Junior Day was a big success. This time around, head coach Al Groh and company reeled in four commitments, doubling their 2008 class total to eight commitments. The newest additions to the class include ...

Stratford (CT) RB Torrey Mack
DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD) CB/WR Rodney McLeod
Hackensack (N.J.) ATH Ausar Walcott
Friendly (Fort Washington, MD) DB Devin Wallace

The 6-0, 190-pound Mack rushed for close to 1,700 yards and 21 touchdowns in his junior season. A speedy back, he has been timed in the 40 at 4.48 seconds.

McLeod, a 5-10, 180-pound prospect, has run in the 10.9 range in the 100 meters and also claims 40-yard dash times in the 4.4s. A very good overall athlete, he also performs well in the long jump in track and field. He plays cornerback and wide receiver for one of the top high school football programs in the state of Maryland and feels like he will end up at cornerback at UVa.

The 6-3, 210-pound Walcott is a versatile player with very good all-around athleticism. He likely projects as a safety or outside linebacker at Virginia.

Wallace, a 5-11, 200-pound prospect, plays safety for Friendly High School but is being recruited by Virginia as a cornerback. He has good speed and is a physical specimen according to Friendly assistant coach Marcus Berry.

Stay tuned throughout the week as we follow up with more prospects who made the trip to Charlottesville last Saturday. Today, we will produce updates on top Eleanor Roosevelt (Greenbelt, MD) safety recruit Okechuckwu Okoroha and UVa tight end commit Colter Phillips. Okoroha is considering Virginia as well as -15 other Division 1A programs that have extended official offers.

Corey Lewis ...

East Stroudsburg (PA) star OL Corey Lewis did not make the trip this past Saturday, but he will be in Charlottesville on Wednesday for another unofficial visit. Though the 6-7, 290-pound prospect may not make a decision then, Virginia continues to be the heavy favorite in this race. Stay tuned for more on his trip on Wednesday night.

Basketball recruiting ...

UVa held its Elite Camp over the weekend and a number of potential 2008 targets were expected in Charlottesville. Stay tuned as we will follow up with these prospects throughout the week.

One recruit who already has an offer from the Hoos is 6-9, 205-pound forward Miles Plumlee. The Christ School star is expected in Charlottesville today and plans to tour the grounds and talk to the coaches and players. This is a big visit for UVa, as Plumlee is seriously considering the Cavs along with Indiana, Stanford, and Vanderbilt, among others. He plans to trim his list by the end of the month and hopes to commit somewhere by the end of the summer.

Plumlee will participate in the NBPA Top 100 Camp, which begins on Wednesday. A number of top rising seniors and rising juniors are expected in Charlottesville this week, so stay tuned for more on this as well. The NBPA Top 100 Camp is one of the top camps in the country and it is certainly a big plus that UVa gets to host the event.

Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

McLeod Finds "Perfect" Fit
The University of Virginia has landed a verbal commitment from 5-10, 180-pound wide receiver Rodney McLeod, a top prospect out of DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD), one of the most prestigious high school football programs in the state of Maryland. McLeod, who chose UVa over seven other Division 1A offers including Maryland and Virginia Tech, committed to the coaching staff toward the end of the Elite Junior Day.

Virginia Lands One of Connecticut's Best
Connecticut is not traditionally a major stomping ground for UVa football recruiting, but the Cavs have landed a commitment from one of the state's best rising senior prospects. 6-0, 190-pound RB/DB Torrey Mack, a star out of Stratford High School, pledged to the Hoos this weekend.

Wallace, Three Others Commit to Cavs!
UVa's June Elite Junior Day is once again a success, as Friendly (Fort Washington, MD) defensive back Devin Wallace joined three other recruits in verbally committing to the University of Virginia following the event. The 5-11, 200-pound prospect pledged to head coach Al Groh following an outstanding experience over the weekend.

Cavs Score Fourth Commitment!
Bergen Catholic (Oradell, N.J.) ATH Billy Schautz, a 6-4, 220-pound prospect, is the newest member of Virginia's 2008 recruiting class. Within the last hour, he pledged his commitment to UVa head coach Al Groh and is the fourth rising senior to commit to the Hoos.

Post of the Week

A funny look at Sabre addiction. Of course, if he's suggesting I run for president, VetHoo is beyond help...

Subject: Top 10 signs that I'm hopelessly addicted to TheSabre.com Posted by: VetHoo on Tue Sep 20 2005 9:05:50 AM Message: 10. I actually had a dream last night that I was in a support group for sabre.com users and abusers - we were all dressed like socrates in white togas and sandals and arguing about why we should win bigger

9. I hardly talk to my wife anymore

8. My entire conversation with my dear 95 year old grandma the other day was with me also reading the sabre edge board and only half paying attention to her

7. I am actually a more informed Virginia football fan

6. The lawn hasn't been mowed in weeks

5. I am consistently dodging responsibilities at work in order to get my fix

4. I now know what BTTTS means

3. John Galinsky - 2008

2. Many of my conversations with my friends and wife now begin much like "one time, at band camp"...."today, on the sabre message board...."

1. I am a hopelessly optimistic Virginia football, holding the task of gaining info on our team a much higher priority than work, keeping of the home, walking the dog, etc, and need to be a part of the largest support group around for this thing (I love you guys...sniff sniff...)

In Case You Missed It ...

Sabre articles since the last SabreMail

Vandy-Hoo: In It For Life
Image: Tiki BarberTen years. As the days since graduation have stretched into months and then years and then an entire decade, the memories of the past slowly fade into a dull historic landscape. But I do remember one thing. I remember not caring about Virginia athletics half as much as I care about it now. Heck, I almost missed the 1995 FSU win because I wanted to sleep after an egregious all-nighter. This fact struck me recently, as I enjoyed the company of some old friends at my 10-year college reunion: I'm not a casual fan anymore, I'm in it for life.

JHoo's Summer Reading: Running Backs
Image: Cedric PeermanI cannot say that I was surprised to see that my quarterbacks article caused some debate on the message boards. When there are a lot of questions that have to be answered about a certain position, there are going to be a lot of opinions about what the answers will be - and why. I suspect, however, that this article will cause less consternation. Why? Because I think that there may be less to question about the talent at the running back position than at any other position on the team.
