Spectacular Spring Continues

After a one-week hiatus, SabreMail returns with plenty of good news. Since our last update, UVa athletes have continued to experience unprecedented success on the national scene.

First and foremost, some Hoos picked up a National Championship last week thanks to outstanding individual performances. Let's start with the biggest story of all - Somdev Devvarman. The Cavalier junior became the first ACC player ever to capture the NCAA singles championship when he pulled out a three-set duel with Georgia's John Isner. Devvarman also teamed up with Treat Huey to reach the semifinals in doubles. The Sabre celebrated the accomplishment with this photo on the home page this past week:

Also picking up a national title was the varsity four boat for the women's rowing team. Chrissie Monaghan, Amanda Chase, Rebecca Ryall, Mindy Fiesler, and coxswain Mary Eddy helped UVa win the national title in that event for the third time in the last four years.

On the team end, the Virginia baseball team started an NCAA Regional with a 2-0 record for the first time under coach Brian O'Connor. The Cavaliers now need just one more win to advance to the Super Regional level for the first time in O'Connor's tenure. UVa faces the Oregon State-Rutgers winner (1 p.m.) at 6 p.m. on Monday if the games are played as scheduled. Rain moved the games back one day already.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Football recruiting ...

Image: J'Courtney WilliamsThe latest "Q&A" segment will be released this week with Christchurch (VA) LB/S J'Courtney Williams being the subject. We should say former Christchurch star, as Williams graduated this past Saturday.

Williams, a selection to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl and a 4-star prospect, is one of Virginia's most highly rated recruits. The 6-3, 228-pound prospect discusses a variety of topics, including which position he expects to play at Virginia. Williams' position has been an issue of debate among Virginia fans, as the talented recruit had thought he was in line to play a hybrid-type safety position for the Cavs. Has anything changed?

Williams also reflects on his recruitment, specifically discussing just how important UVa defensive coordinator Mike London, who was his primary recruiter, was to his decision. The in-state talent says he is all set to get to Virginia and plans to enroll the first week in July.

Williams does plan to visit Virginia before he arrives in July ... actually, he plans to go to Charlottesville today. He informed The Sabre.com that he will be accompanied by 2008 class recruit Corey Lewis, a former teammate of his at Christchurch.

"Corey is 6-7, 280 pounds, and he runs a 4.9 in the 40," Williams told TheSabre.com over the weekend.

Lewis attended Christchurch School his freshman and sophomore years before transferring to East Stroudsburg South in Pennsylvania. A talented lineman who saw action on both sides of the ball in his junior season, he claims recent offers from Michigan, Penn State, and Virginia. Lewis is very high on Virginia, but may not make a decision this week (we wouldn't rule it out, though). He is expected to return to Virginia for the Elite Junior Day on June 16.

A two-sport athlete, Lewis also plays basketball for East Stroudsburg South.

Some important dates to remember this month include ...

June 16th - UVa's Elite Junior Day
June 23rd - UVa's 7-on-7 passing tournament and Big Man Camp
June 24th-27th - UVa's Traditional Four Day Camp

The Sabre finally caught up with 6-2, 180-pound DB/WR Ras-I Dowling last week. Dowling, originally a 2006 class recruit before he had to prep at Hargrave for a year in order to raise his SAT score, only recently received his needed SAT score and is now set to enroll at Virginia. He plans to enroll on July 3 and is extremely excited about the opportunity.

Dowling, one of the best athletes in this class, expects to start out his career at cornerback but could switch to safety. He is considered a 4-star recruit, especially after starting the entire season at cornerback for Robert Prunty's postgraduate football squad.

With Dowling now all set, Virginia just awaits word from 6-5, 290-pound Ballou (Washington, D.C.) OL Lamar Milstead. Milstead doesn't need much to attain a qualifying SAT score, but he does need about 20-30 points. He is confident he made it with the last test, but stay tuned as we will check back for the latest. Should Milstead not make the score, he has one more SAT try remaining before he would have to prep.

Basketball recruiting ...

An important week - very important, in fact - as far as Virginia basketball recruiting goes is the week of June 19-24, which is the week of the NBPA Top 100 camp. This camp features top prospects from all across the country so there will be a large number of top targets in the 2008 recruiting class in attendance.

According to DeSmet Jesuit (St. Louis, MO) head coach Bob Steiner, 6-10, 220-pound C prospect John Brandenburg will be in Charlottesville from June 18-23. Brandenburg, a top 100 recruit as rated by Scout.com and Rivals.com, has been offered by Virginia and is seriously considering the Hoos. His coach does not expect a decision until the fall, but this visit is no doubt very important for the Cavs to have any chance once decision time comes.

Brandenburg is a two-time first-team all-Metro Catholic league selection for DeSmet.

Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Dowling Ready for UVa
Image: Ras-I DowlingOnce Ras-I Dowling received his qualifying SAT score, he immediately called primary recruiter Bob Price. Price was "happy, very happy," Dowling says. The 6-2, 180-pound DB/WR is finally set to go to the University of Virginia, and Al Groh and company will get one of their most highly rated recruits in the 2007 class.

Glennon Doubles Offers in Evaluation Period
Image: Mike GlennonAfter more than doubling his scholarship offer total in the month of May, there is no doubt that 6-6, 195-pound quarterback Mike Glennon has had one impressive Evaluation period. I caught up with Westfield's (Chantilly, VA) star junior to discuss his recent offers, his summer plans and his decision-making process.

The Latest on Ed Davis
Image: Ed DavisWith Virginia's 2007 class complete barring any surprises, Virginia coaches and fans look ahead to the 2008 recruiting class. Certainly, there is no bigger target than Ed Davis, the 6-8, 215-pound forward out of Benedictine High School (Richmond, VA). Davis, a 5-star recruit and one of the top rising seniors in the nation, revealed a top three at this point in his recruitment.

A Final Look at UVa's 2007 Class
Image: Jeff JonesCoach Leitao and company were unable to land coveted power forward Patrick Patterson in the spring signing period, meaning the Cavs' class consists of the four prospects signed in the fall signing period. But that does not mean that the class hasn't improved. Three of UVa's four recruits rose in PrepStars.com's final player rankings, with two of the three settling in the national top 100 list.

Springtime Means Good Times for Cav Fans

Ben Rubeor and the Cavaliers host Notre Dame on Saturday in the NCAA Tournament.

Spring has become an annual celebration time for University of Virginia fans thanks to the strong success of the season's programs. Once again this spring, the men's and women's lacrosse teams and the women's rowing team have won ACC Championships. Men's tennis earned the right to host an NCAA Tournament home regional for the second straight season and women's tennis returned to the NCAA Tournament after a very strong campaign. The baseball team is among the top 15 teams in the nation as well.

As a result, this weekend could be one of the Cavaliers' finest as Charlottesville plays host to a multitude of spring sporting events. The nation's No. 1 men's lacrosse team opens NCAA Tournament play by hosting Notre Dame on Saturday at 3:30 p.m., while the nation's No. 2 women's lacrosse team hosts Princeton on Sunday at 1 p.m. The No. 7 men's tennis team opens NCAA Tournament play at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning when it welcomes Army to Charlottesville. If the Cavaliers win, they return to action Sunday at noon.

In addition to all the exciting postseason action, Virginia faces North Carolina for a three-game baseball series that begins on Friday at 7 p.m. UVa battles UNC on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. The Tar Heels are ranked No. 1 in the nation.

In Case You Missed It ...

Sabre articles since the last SabreMail

NCAA Tournament Notes: Pitching Options
Image: Davenport FieldWhen Brian O'Connor emphasized "now we have all hands on deck" after Saturday night's 7-4 win over Oregon State, he truly meant it. Thanks to Sunday's rain in the Charlottesville area, the Cavalier coach actually might have a few more options with UVa's next game scheduled for 6 p.m. on Monday against the OSU and Rutgers winner. The elimination game is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Scaglione, Hoos Defy Baseball Gods
Image: John ScaglioneESPN 840's Wes McElroy said it best - the baseball gods were not smiling on Virginia Saturday night. But after going through what must seemed the trials of Job, the gods blessed the hosts with a win and their first 2-0 start in an NCAA Regional under Brian O'Connor. But it required much sacrifice as the Cavaliers lost two of its pivotal players. Fortunately for the Hoos, players like John Scaglione and Mike Mitchell stepped up and delivered.

NCAA Tournament Notes: Lambert Shines
Image: Casey LambertThere were more than a few frazzled heads in the crowd when Casey Lambert emerged from the Virginia bullpen with one out in the seventh inning of a 3-3 tie against Oregon State on Saturday night. But UVa coach Brian O'Connor knew what he wanted to do if the Hoos ended up in that type of situation before the first pitch was ever thrown.

Doolittle Sets Tone With Strong Start
Image: Sean DoolittleAt 5:51 p.m. on Friday, Sean Doolittle (8-3) left the pitching rubber at Davenport Field for, in all likelihood, the last time to a long standing ovation. At 6:13 p.m., he left the field with the career record in wins (22) by a Virginia pitcher as the Cavaliers took the opening game of the Charlottesville Regional, 5-1, over the Lafayette Leopards. After the game, coach Brian O'Connor gave Doolittle a verbal ovation of his own.

NCAA Tournament Notes: Marsh Rolls
Image: Sean DoolittleBrandon Marsh led the Cavaliers with four hits in Friday's 5-1 win over Lafayette. It was his third four-hit game this season (the other two came vs. VT on March 31 and Maryland on April 27). Marsh helped spark the Cavaliers' offense in the first inning when they took the lead and never looked back. first hit and first run when he scored on Brandon Guyer's first inning home run to left center field. The right fielder then added singles in the second, fourth, and seventh innings. Plus, he picked up a stolen base.

2007 Charlottesville Regional
Image: Sean DoolittleAs Sean Doolittle and Virginia prepare for the 2007 Charlottesville Regional, TheSabre.com wants to help prepare our readers for the weekend action. The field includes Lafayette, defending National Champion Oregon State, Rutgers, and the Cavaliers. What are the teams' strengths? How do the Hoos match up with each opponent? Let's take a look at the four-team bracket.

The JPJ's Top 10 Moments
Image: Sean SingletaryI've tried to move on and shift my focus after basketball season, a task that is admittedly difficult for me in any year. Moving on after Virginia's 2006-07 season has proven even more difficult than usual. This year, the Cavaliers were not only a fun and entertaining team to watch, they were also highly successful as ACC co-regular season champions. Throw in the fact that it was the inaugural season for the John Paul Jones Arena and this could be a season long remembered by Hoos. Let's reminisce a little with the JPJ's Top 10 Moments ... though you should have no problem guessing No. 1.

Best Seat in the House: Brian O'Connor
Image: Brian O'ConnorThe Virginia baseball team is gearing up for the NCAA Tournament this week as the program prepares to host regional action, starting Friday at 4 p.m. UVa coach Brian O'Connor joined The Best Seat in the House to talk about the NCAA games, pitching, offense, Mark Reynolds, and more. Check out the FREE audio feature here.

Northwestern Holds Off UVa
Image: Kate BreslinPHILADELPHIA - Over the past month, the Virginia's women's lacrosse team has found numerous different ways to beat a formidable slate of opponents. On Sunday evening in the NCAA Championship game, however, the Cavaliers finally ran into a team whose talent was too much to overcome. Northwestern showed all the reasons that it is the top-ranked team in the nation as the Wildcats edged Virginia 15-13 in front of 6,075 at Franklin Field.

Lambert Makes Strong Start In Cavs' Loss
Image: Casey Lambert43 times in his career, games have ended just like he wanted them to: with a save. Actually, 174 times in his career Casey Lambert's Virginia teams have left the diamond a winner, just like he wanted. Saturday afternoon in Jacksonville didn't end the way Lambert wanted it too thanks to a 5-0 loss to UNC in the ACC Tournament. However, Lambert did end his ACC career in style and in a way that could prove vital to Virginia's postseason success.

Hoos Turn Focus to Northwestern
Image: Blair WeymouthPHILADELPHIA - How does a team follow up an unprecedented nine-goal, second-half comeback? Virginia will have to answer that question on Sunday evening at 7 p.m. when the third-seeded Cavaliers face off against first-seeded Northwestern for the NCAA Championship. Blair Weymouth and UVa wasted little time in moving on from Friday's dramatics - the Hoos went back to work on Saturday afternoon at Franklin Field, practicing for two hours to tune up for Sunday's duel with the Wildcats.

ACC Tournament Notes: Cavs Come Up Short
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Virginia baseball team fell short of qualifying for the ACC Championship Game thanks to a shutout loss on Saturday. Instead, North Carolina earned a berth in the title game for the first time since 1990. UVa now must wait for its NCAA Tournament fate, which will be announced on Sunday afternoon.

Audio, Video Special: Rob Lanier
Image: Coach Rob LanierVirginia's Rob Lanier is joining the Florida men's basketball program as an assistant coach after working in the same position at UVa for the past three seasons. Lanier was one of the orginial members of coach Dave Leitao's first staff. Sabre partners WCAV and The Best Seat in the House caught up with Lanier this week to talk about the decision to go to Florida, his time at Virginia, and more. Check out the FREE audio and video.

UVa's Unbelievable Rally Stuns Duke
Image: Jess WasilewskiPHILADELPHIA - It was all over. There was no way Virginia could come back from a nine-goal deficit with 20 minutes remaining in the second half. Fans began to file out of Franklin Field and members of the media started to write stories about a Duke blowout of the Cavaliers. They all jumped the gun. Virginia miraculously rallied with the biggest comeback in tourney history and Jess Wasilewski notched the game-winner with nine seconds remaining to win 14-13 and advance to Sunday's Championship Game against Northwestern.

ACC Tournament Notes: Format Rumblings
Image: Brian O'ConnorJACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Following Virginia's Thursday night win over Georgia Tech, there were rumblings and grumblings that if a Virginia win/ North Carolina loss scenario played out, Virginia would automatically be in Sunday's Championship game without having played a third game. That scenario didn't materialize, but UVa coach Brian O'Connor said the coaches had three main reasons for using this tourney system even if it had.

Finding Good Help
Image: Pitching coach Karl KuhnImage: UVa coach Kevin McMullanFour consecutive 40-win seasons. The entire 2007 season ranked in the top 10. Four consecutive NCAA Regional appearances. That's a token list of the accomplishments of Cavalier baseball under the direction of Brian O'Connor. The first thing the head coach will tell you, however, is that while he might be the face of Virginia baseball, the driving force behind the club's unprecedented success over the last four seasons is associate head coach Kevin McMullan and pitching coach Karl Kuhn. "Anybody that really knows the ins and outs of our program know those two guys are the backbone of our program," says O'Connor. "We would not in any way be where we are today without what those two guys do."

Rule Delivers Against Georgia Tech
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Virginia's coaches realized Jake Rule would have to provide some quality relief work on the mound if the Cavaliers had any chance of winning the ACC Tournament. So with a 6-1 lead in Wednesday's game against N.C. State, the staff decided to give Rule some work in a less than critical spot to "get his feet wet" in the postseason. It proved to be a good decision because the Hoos needed Rule in a tight spot during a 4-1 win over Georgia Tech on Thursday and he delivered.

ACC Tournament Notes: Keep Trying
Image: Sean DoolittleJACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Virginia baseball team moved one step closer to Sunday's ACC Championship game with a 4-1 victory against Georgia Tech on Thursday. After Sean Doolittle delivered a strong start against GT, the Hoos now own a 2-0 record through the first two games of round robin play, meaning a UNC loss to either N.C. State or UVa would put the Cavaliers in the title game.

Marsh Steps Up, Sparks UVa
Image: Brandon MarshJACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Virginia's Brandon Marsh entered the opening game of the ACC Tournament mired in a 4 for 24 slump (.166) over the final six games of the regular season. Things didn't start any better on Wednesday for Marsh, who erased Tyler Cannon's lead-off single in the first inning by hitting into a 5-4-3 double play. Fortunately for him and the Hoos, he dove in and reversed those fortunes.

ACC Tournament Notes: Adjustment Big In Win
Image: David AdamsJACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Virginia's most productive inning in its 6-1 win over North Carolina State in the first game of the 2007 ACC Baseball Championship came in the fifth inning. Patrick Winfield struck out looking on three pitches. Tim Henry flied out sharply to center on the second pitch he saw. Tyler Cannon lined out on a rope to second base. Six pitches. Three outs. Like I said, highly productive. That's because the Cavs got more aggressive in that frame and they eventually "took advantage of it" according to David Adams.

Speculating On Lanier's Replacement
Image: Coach Rob LanierWith the news of Rob Lanier leaving Virginia for Florida, Dave Leitao has a spot to fill on his staff. In all likelihood, this move will want to be done quickly with the summer recruiting and AAU circuit firing up soon. There seem to be three potential paths: promote within, hire a rising star assistant, or hire a head coach who is starting over. Let the speculation begin!

ACC Tournament - 5 Keys To Success
Image: Sean DoolittleFor the first time in four years, the Cavaliers limp into the ACC Baseball Championship Tournament. Reeling from its series loss a week ago to N.C. State and an 11-7 spanking at the hands of Coastal Carolina last Tuesday, Virginia wants to right the ship, secure its position as an NCAA regional host, and make a case for a top eight seed. There are five keys for Sean Doolittle and UVa to accomplish those goals.
