This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Basketball recruiting...

Mike Scott turned in 25 points on 11-of-18 shooting in last Thursday's Capital Classic. It wasn't enough to spur Scott's U.S. All-Stars squad on to victory, though, as the Capital All-Stars won 149-145.

The 6'8" Scott added five rebounds and two steals in the losing effort. He was named to the all-tournament team. Fellow UVa recruit Jeff Jones, who was recently named first-team AAAA all-state by the Pennsylvania AP, never found his rhythm for the U.S. team and finished with seven points on 3-of-9 shooting.

For comments from UVa's recruits, check out last Friday's EDGE update on the Capital Classic. Jones and Scott discuss their futures at UVa and what to expect in their first year under head coach Dave Leitao. The update also includes new photos of the players.

TheSabre.com was in Hampton, Virginia, this past weekend for a few games from the Boo Williams Invitational.

Boo Williams Summer League's 17-and-under squad captured the championship title Sunday, as top junior recruit Ed Davis scored the game-winning bucket with 2 seconds remaining for the win over Mean Streets of Chicago. Davis, who recently listed UVa and UConn as his two favorites, tallied 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the winning effort.

Look for updates on several UVa junior targets today, including guard Sylven Landesburg (Metro Hawks AAU) and guard Andre Jones (BWSL).

UVa has yet to land a commitment for the 2008 recruiting class.

Stay tuned for another update on 6'8", 235-pound power forward Patrick Patterson. The 5-star senior out of Huntington (W.V.) still has not narrowed his list of schools from six to three and now may wait until May to make a commitment according to Sunday's report in the Huntington Herald-Dispatch.

Patterson was on the winning USA squad in Saturday's Nike Hoops Summit. He will be part of the Jordan Classic later this month.

Football recruiting ...

The spring game will take place this Saturday and junior recruits do plan to be in attendance. One recruit expected to attend is St. Anthony's (Long Island, N.Y.) defensive tackle Scott Vallone. The 6'2", 260-pound prospect visited UVa this past Friday for a spring practice and plans to return this Saturday. The Sabre EDGE will bring you comments from this past Friday's experience and a look ahead to what he expects out of the spring game.

Smithfield (VA) WR Dyrell Roberts, Christchurch (VA) WR Deion Walker, and Norview (VA) DT Buddy Ruff are among other recruits expected in Charlottesville this Saturday.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Scott Performs Well in Capital Classic
Image: Mike ScottIn last night's Capital Classic held at the Comcast Center (College Park, MD), the Capital All-Stars defeated the U.S. All-Stars 149-145. UVa recruit Mike Scott turned in a good performance in a losing effort, finishing with 25 points including 16 in the second half. Last night was also the first time Scott had the chance to play with fellow UVa recruit Jeff Jones.

08 Target Profile: G Elliot Williams
St. George's School (Memphis, TN) guard Elliot Williams showed why he is being heavily courted by ACC and SEC programs with an excellent performance this season. Averaging 23 points, five assists, five rebounds and four steals per game, the 6-4 prospect led St. George's to a 25-6 record, a small schools championship title and an appearance in the Division 2 state championship game.

UVa Has Offered Massive OL
Virginia was one of three schools to receive a visit from 6'7", 310-pound York (Elmhurst, IL) offensive tackle prospect Neil Deiters last week. Deiters checked out Charlottesville on March 24th, which of course was UVa's second junior day for the 2008 recruiting class.

Blog Post of the Week

A little debate out there in the blogosphere regarding who has the hotter seat: Groh or Clemson's Tommy Bowden. Deinhart says Tommy, Maloney says Groh. But, in the end, both think Groh should worry about getting fired.

They're both wrong, and the mistake these guys are making is assuming that Clemson and Virginia have the same atmosphere surrounding their coaches. So comparing the two is like comparing apples with Micheal Vick's water bottles.

Cavaliers win on Hughes' and Winborne's late-game heroics

Connor Hughes kicks the winning FG with less than 10 seconds remaining.
Wake Forest gave Virginia quite a fight last Saturday, but the Hoos dug down deep and were able to pull out the win. While there were many heroes on the day, no one shined more than sophomore placekicker Connor Hughes. With the game under two minutes, Hughes connected on a booming 53-yarder field goal to tie the game. After a remarkable interception by Jamaine Winborne to get the Hoos into field goal range, Hughes nailed another one with less than 10 seconds remaining to win the game.

As mentioned above, there were quite a few heroes on the day for the Hoos. Matt Schaub returned to action for the first time since the opening drive against Duke over a month ago. Schaub came out hot, completing 30 of his 45 pass attempts for 326 yards and two touchdowns. Schaub also showed some guts, breaking free from an apparent sack and diving into the end zone for a crucial two-point conversation to tie the game at the start of the fourth quarter.

Virginia's defense should get some credit as well. While they did give up 47-yard touchdown pass to Wake in the third quarter, they dug down deep when the team needed it the most. When Virginia was coming back, Schaub threw two interceptions late in the game. Wake was unable to capitalize on either turnover. On a game-deciding 4th and 2 on UVa's 8-yard line, the Cavalier defense stopped Wake Forest to give Schaub a chance to move the team down the field for the tying score. And let's not forget Winborne's interception that put Virginia in field goal range to win the game, rather than going to overtime.

This was a character-building win for the Hoos over an improving Wake Forest team. The win puts UVa at 2-0 in the conference and 3-1 overall, which puts them off to a better start than last year's 9-5 bowl-winning team (the 2002 team started 2-2).

In Case You Missed It ...

Sabre articles since the last SabreMail

Cavs Rally To Top UNC
Image: Drew ThompsonThe third-ranked Virginia men's lacrosse team needed late game heroics from Drew Thompson and Garrett Billings to stave off 10th-ranked North Carolina on Saturday evening as the Cavaliers notched a thrilling 10-9 overtime victory. "That was a really good win against a quality North Carolina team," said Virginia coach Dom Starsia.

Expect Diverse Roles For Santi
Image: Tom SantiIn some ways, Tom Santi is getting a bum rap. After all, the prevailing view among the Wahoo faithful seems to be that he had an average - at best - to an awful - at worst - season in 2006. But statistically the tight end had his best season as a Cavalier and he is Virginia's returning leader in receptions, yards, and receiving touchdowns. So what gives? Did Santi play well or poorly? Probably a bit of both.

Why or Why Not? - Baseball Rolling
Image: Wes McElroyThe Virginia baseball team has soared into the top 5 in the national rankings thanks to a strong 27-6 start this season. The Cavaliers are in the thick of the ACC race at 8-4. Can the Hoos keep it going? ESPN 840 AM's Wes McElroy tackles some "Why or Why Not?" questions about the baseball team on items like base running, Sean Doolittle, and more. Remember, "Why or Why Not?" features a true/false type statement and the guest tells you why it is a factual statement or why it is not.

Around the Horn: In Good Position
Image: Brian O'ConnorThe Virginia Cavaliers improved to 8-4 in the ACC and took over the top spot in the Coastal Division with a three game sweep of the Virginia Tech Hokies in Blacksburg last weekend. UVa owns the head-to-head tiebreaker with North Carolina, which also failed to sweep in Blacksburg. Virginia coach Brian O'Connor says that one game edge in the respective series against the Hokies could be huge at season's end.

Hoo Tales - The Alley To Love
For Simone and Dave Alley, their 1996 season tickets to Virginia football turned out to be more than mere football tickets - they were their tickets to love. After all, those Scott Stadium seats combined with a match-making sister and a honeymoon starting in Georgia to form a match made in Hoo heaven.

Sewell Still Limited In Practice
Image: Jameel SewellReturning quarterback Jameel Sewell is participating in spring practice following offseason wrist surgery, but his level of participation is still something that is monitored each day. Virginia coach Al Groh indicated that there is "a residual soreness from each practice" so back-to-back days typically mean that Sewell doesn't get the same amount of repetitions.
