This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Football ...

Signing Day 2007 has come and gone and there were really no major surprises with respect to UVa's class. The Hoos signed 24 prospects - Coach Al Groh says he expects all 24 to be in Charlottesville in August (meaning he expects no academic casualties at this time).

Two players whose decisions were in question on Signing Day decided to sign elsewhere. LB Romale Tucker signed with Syracuse and WR Vincent Hill signed with Akron.

UVa finished with a class ranked #24 in the nation by Rivals.com and a class rated #7 in the ACC by the ACC Area Sports Journal. It was a very good class - perhaps the best of the Al Groh era - and one that fills some needs and adds quality talent to a lot of different areas.

If you haven't already, check out the Sabre EDGE coverage of last Wednesday's Signing Day and the 2007 recruiting class. And stay tuned for further coverage, including Q&A sessions with some of UVa's top gets in the class.

Also, stay tuned for a preview into the 2008 class for a look into what areas may be most important for the staff to recruit in '08. UVa is off to a good start so far with a commitment from 6-7, 265-pound junior Matt Mihalik and will have a junior day coming up soon on February 24. As Groh said on Signing Day, Denny's never closes ... and recruiting never stops.

Men's basketball .

Jeff Jones inched closer to become the all-time leading scorer in Philadelphia Catholic League history with a 41-point performance last night. He also had 12 rebounds and 5 assists. The 6-4 guard could not help Monsignor Bonner to a win last night, falling to Neumann-Goretti 79-75, but he did force an overtime with a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Jones is at least 32 points away from being the PCL all-time leading scorer. The league is checking into what his actual total is - right now, it's 1,829 points. The all-time leading scorer is Reggie Jackson of Roman Catholic with 1,861 points.

Jones is averaging 22.5 points per game this season. Monsignor Bonner has two games remaining.

Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

In Focus: Cavs Come Back with Strong Class
Simply put, UVa's 2007 class is one of the best of the Al Groh era, and kudos to the staff for putting together and keeping together this caliber a class in the face of coaching turnover as well as a disappointing 2006 season. Rated the number 25 overall class in the country by Rivals.com, Virginia's class consists of seven 4-star recruits including four from the state of Virginia. UVa head coach Al Groh and staff landed top talents from out-of-state and really enhanced the athleticism of the team.

Q&A: ACC Sports Journal Editor Dave Glenn
Dave Glenn, Editor of the ACC Area Sports Journal, discusses the 2007 football recruiting classes in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Glenn gives his rankings and discusses the headliners of each program, the surprises and disappointments and more in what seems to be a good but not great recruiting year for the ACC.

Hagans delivers in win over Western Michigan

Coach Al Groh decided to start all-everything talent Marques Hagans over freshman Anthony Martinez at quarterback this past Saturday against Western Michigan. The move proved to be an excellent decision, as Hagans led the team to an easy 59-16 victory over the Broncos in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Hagans completed 12 of his 20 passes for 162 yards with three touchdowns. He also kept the Broncos' defense off balance with his feet, rushing for 68 yards on nine carries.

A lot of Cavaliers got into the scoring column this game, including two freshmen. True freshman receiver Deyon Williams saw his first action of the season. On his very first play from scrimmage, Williams caught a 35-yard pass for a touchdown. Redshirt freshman cornerback Tony Franklin provided icing on the cake with his 45-yard interception return for a touchdown with just over three minutes remaining.

Overall it was a good day for the Cavaliers on both sides of the ball, especially on the defensive end. After a poor effort at South Carolina the week prior, the Hoos really needed to step up it up against Western Michigan, a team that had put up 1,050 yards in their last two contests. Against the Wahoo defense, the Broncos put up just 91 yards on the ground and were stifled through the air for a majority of the contest. More than 200 of the Bronco's 317 yards in the air were picked up in the fourth quarter, when the game was well out of reach.

The Cavalier defense also sacked the Broncos' quarterback three times and caused a number of hurries, interceptions and fumbles. Virginia forced six turnovers on the day, converting most of them into touchdowns. Two interceptions were run back for scores - one by Franklin as mentioned above and another by senior defensive leader and cornerback Almondo Curry on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter.

In Case You Missed It ...

Sabre articles since the last SabreMail

Hokies Run Past Cavaliers
Image: J.R. ReynoldsFor seven straight games, Virginia had relied on stingy defense, timely shooting, and rebounding to ascend to the top of the ACC standings. The Cavaliers had a poor showing in all three of those categories on Saturday in Blacksburg and they got blitzed by rival Virginia Tech, 84-57. It was the Cavaliers' largest losing margin on the season.

Scouting Report: Virginia Tech
Image: Ben D'AlessandroTo say the least, the Virginia men's basketball has been on quite a run lately. Seven straight league wins, three in a row on the road in the ACC. Impressive. As should be expected in this conference though, it doesn't get any easier this weekend. The Hoos travel to Virginia Tech for a rivalry showdown that features some of the best guards in the conference according to former ACC assistant coach Ben D'Alessandro. Check out this scouting report for the Hokies.

Around the Horn: Preseason 2007 Edition
Image: Brian O'ConnorThe Sabre.com takes an extensive look at the 2007 Cavaliers next week with our Virginia Baseball preview. In our first edition of Around the Horn, we preview opening weekend as Brian O'Connor and the Wahoos travel to Conway, South Carolina, for the second consecutive season for the Springmaid Beach Resort Tournament at Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field where they will face Elon, North Florida, and Coastal Carolina. In this first edition, The Sabre also tells you why Virginia can meet its two primary objectives this season: Win the ACC and earn a trip to the College World Series.

JHoo: Nerves Aside, Signing Day Good For Hoos
Image: Coach Al GrohSigning Day for 2007 has past. My reaction? Whew. Signing Day causes me way too much stress every year. As I recently noted, I am Chicken Little when it comes to recruiting. Always have been, always will be. But having said that, I think that many great recruiters are Chicken Littles, too, always staying on top of the game out of fear that the sky may be falling. Turns out, there was no need to worry, Al Groh and his staff kept the class together.

London To Return To Virginia
Image: Coach Mike LondonIt is no secret that Virginia defensive coordinator Mike London is considered a rising star in the coaching business. That's why his name keeps finding a way on to short lists for head coaching openings. Most recently, his name had been mentioned as a front runner for the top job at Old Dominion, which begins play in 2009. For now, UVa fans can breathe a huge sigh of relief - London is staying in Charlottesville.

"Fun Day" Welcomes 24 Signees For UVa
Image: Coach Al GrohThe Virginia football team slugged its way through a challenging 2006 season. Ultimately, the Cavaliers finished with a 5-7 record and frustration brewed in Wahoo nation. Among the biggest concerns that grew during the "rebuilding" season? Losing recruits from what appeared to be a strong class on paper. Turns out, all the hand wringing was for naught.

Best Seat in the House: Signing Day
Image: J'Courtney WilliamsCollege football signing day 2007 finally arrived today as recruits around the country inked letters of intent with their schools of choice. How did the Cavaliers do? Virginia picked up 24 recruits to compile a highly rated class. UVa coach Al Groh, The Sabre's Chris Horne, and signee J'Courtney Williams all joined Jed Williams on The Best Seat in the House to talk about the day.

Swept Away: Role Players Help Roll Maryland
Image: Tunji SoroyeCollege Park, MD - Mamadi Diane's lay-up 3:17 into the game gave the Cavaliers a 10-8 lead over Maryland that they never relinquished. Still, the Terrapins made it interesting late when they cut a 15-point deficit to two in the final moments before Tunji Soroye sealed the deal with his 11th rebound and an icing free throw. It sure was fitting that Hoos not named J.R. Reynolds or Sean Singletary helped push the team into the early lead and wrapped up the win late. Why? Because Virginia's role players kept coming up big all night in what was a key storyline of the Cavs' 69-65 win.

5 Things I Learned Against Duke & Miami
Image: Will HarrisSean Singletary's game-winning shot and subsequent stare against Duke last week captured a lot of attention. And rightfully so. After all, you don't see fall-away rainbows over two defenders go in to beat a top 10 team every day of the week. As incredible as that shot proved to be, however, there were some other key details in last week's 2-0 ACC record. Take the play of Will Harris for example. Let's look at "5 Things I Learned Against Duke & Miami."

Jed's Best Seat Buzz: "Recruiting" London
Image: Jed WilliamsMere hours from Signing Day (a national holiday in many states far exceeding such trivial celebrations as Thanksgiving and Christmas), Virginia Football is positioned for a banner haul. It's a (gasp) drama-less Signing Day. But in this special case, the recruiter needs recruiting. Or re-recruiting - Virginia's most important recruit might just be a current Cavalier: Mike London.

Scouting Report: Maryland, Game 2
Image: Ben D'AlessandroVirginia travels to College Park tonight in search of its third straight ACC road victory and seventh straight league win overall. The Cavaliers started that streak in the John Paul Jones Arena on Jan. 16 by defeating Maryland in a 103-91 romp. UVa's guards made the difference in that game and one should expect the Terrapins' defense to place an added focus on the Hoos' backcourt in the second match-up. Former ACC assistant coach Ben D'Alessandro looks back at the last meeting and talks about potential adjustments for Game 2 in this scouting report.

Best Seat in the House: Spring Sports
Image: Brian O'ConnorVirginia's spring sports teams have started practice and the various Cavaliers are undoubtedly ready to get the games going as well. Jed Williams welcomed many of the Hoos' spring sports coaches to The Best Seat in the House recently to talk about their upcoming seasons. Check out the free audio of Brian O'Connor, Dom Starsia, Mark Guilbeau, Brian Boland, and Karen Johns.
