Three Former Hoos Make The Super Bowl

The NFL playoffs have dwindled down to the final two teams after Chicago (NFC Champions) and Indianapolis (AFC Champions) advanced to the Super Bowl. For Virginia fans, that means three more Hoos will suit up in professional football's biggest game.

For Chicago, running back Thomas Jones and offensive tackle John St. Clair will represent UVa in Miami. Jones played a huge role in helping the Bears reach the Super Bowl, rushing for 123 yards and 2 touchdowns in the NFC Championship Game. Chicago defeated New Orleans 39-14.

For Indianapolis, Terrence Wilkins is the former Cavalier that is headed for the Super Bowl. Wilkins is a wide receiver/return specialist for the Colts. Wilkins averaged 20.0 yards per kick return and 13.3 yards per punt return in Indianapolis' 38-34 win against New England.

The Super Bowl is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 4 in Miami.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Football recruiting .

17 UVa football commitments were in Charlottesville over the weekend, making their official visits to the University of Virginia. One more commitment - Henrico DB/ATH Corey Mosley - made a trip to Charlottesville as well, however he was on an unofficial visit. He had taken his official last month.

Though there were no uncommitted players with UVa offers in town, the weekend was still a success from the standpoint of solidifying the 2007 class. According to sources and according to some of the players we have already spoken with, it seems that all of the commitments enjoyed their experiences.

Stay tuned throughout the week for reaction from this past weekend.

Last week, UVa missed out on two prospective offensive line targets in Anthony Castonzo and John Elliott. Both had originally been scheduled to visit UVa this past weekend.

The 6-6, 255-pound Castonzo decided to narrow his list to three - Boston College, Stanford and Vanderbilt. Elliott, a 4-star recruit and one of UVa's top targets in the 2007 class, committed to Boston College while on a mid-week official visit.

Also, LB Almondo Sewell, a 2006 Virginia signee, has decided to pursue other options. His recent standardized test scores showed that he was not making as much progress as UVa admissions would have liked, so Sewell and the staff decided to go their separate ways. Sewell says there are "no hard feelings" and looks forward to finding other opportunities.

This week, we will release yet another edition of 'Countdown to Signing Day,' which is a look at UVa's 2007 class recruiting picture. There are more targets out there, so we'll see if UVa decides to extend any other offers and which recruits will come in for official visits.

Also stay tuned as we continue to roll out feature profiles on 2008 class prospects. UVa has already extended scholarship offers to current high school juniors. Find out which ones may be the next top targets for Al Groh and company.

Basketball recruiting .

Penn Charter (Philadelphia, PA) is only 9-12 on the season, but the Quakers have won four of its last six games. Last week, the Quakers captured two of three games, defeating Chestnut Hill Academy and Red Land while falling to the Haverford School.

In the two wins last week, 6-1, 185-pound point guard Sammy Zeglinski, who signed a letter of intent with UVa this past November, scored 24 and 17 points, respectively. Zeglinski was the first player commit to Dave Leitao's 2007 recruiting class.

Penn Charter next takes the floor this Friday, when it takes on Malvern Prep at home.

Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Minnifield on the Road to Recovery
Image: Chase MinnifieldFour-star wide receiver/defensive back Chase Minnifield, one of UVa's prized commitments for the 2007 recruiting class, recently suffered a torn ACL while playing for Henry Clay's (Lexington, KY) varsity basketball squad. Last Thursday, he had surgery to repair the injured knee and is now in the beginning stages of rehabilitation.

Countdown to Signing Day: Surprise, Surprise
Surprises are not all that uncommon in the world of recruiting. UVa received a pleasant surprise last weekend, when offensive lineman target Lamar Milstead de-committed from UNC and pledged to the 'Hoos. Milstead's decision, as well as two more commitments from last weekend and recent news regarding a target and a previous commitment, have shedded more light on UVa's 2007 recruiting class - a good class that is currently rated #14 in the nation by Rivals.com and #25 in the nation by Scout.com. What else is in store for UVa with just three weeks left until Signing Day?

Comfort level, Trust Factor into Mosley's Decision
Image: Corey MosleyIt has been a little over a month since Henrico (Richmond, VA) ATH Corey Mosley made an official visit to the University of Virginia. The 5-8 ½, 190-pound prospect enjoyed his trip and seemed close to committing to the Cavs, but it wasn't until last night that Mosley got the boost he needed to go ahead and commit to Al Groh and company.

Dom Joseph Excited to Return to UVa
Dom Joseph, who committed to the University of Virginia last March, is looking forward to his return trip to Charlottesville this weekend as he makes his official visit. The 6-0, 190-pound prospect has not been down to UVa since last year's spring game.

Virginia basketball trounces Howard

In one of the more lop-sided victories since the Ralph Sampson era, the Cavaliers did a little more than take care of business Wednesday night in University Hall. In front of a crowd of over 7,000 (decent, considering the holiday break), the Hoos jumped out to a 30-9 lead right out of the gate. Howard wasn't big enough, strong enough or fast enough to handle the Cavs, who eventually won the contest 115-66. Virginia pulled all of its starters prior to the midway point of the second half.

Here's a brief run down on last night's game:

Roger Mason: Amazing, even though he was pulled with over 10 minutes left in the second half. Hit his first six shots - the first five were all from 3-point range - two of them clearly beyond the NBA 3-point area. His last two 3-point attempts (of the half) missed, and were about 30 feet from the basket, and still looked like they would fall. Perhaps Mason was getting board with those simple 25-foot shots?

Mason's line: 7/11 FG, 5/8 3FG, 2/2 FT, 5 Reb, 6 Asst, 2 TO, 1 Stl.

Chris Williams: He took over where Mason left off, draining four 3's in a row to close out the half. Williams was everywhere on the court, playing great defense and scoring almost at will. He air-balled his first 3-pointer and never missed a shot after that.

Williams' line: 8/9 FG, 5/6 3FG, 1/4 FT, 5 Reb, 3 Asst, 2 Blk, 3 Stl, 0 TO.

Travis Watson: Missed a few point-blank shots, but was very active. Really wanted the ball early. Was a monster on the boards before he left the game early in the second half.

Watson's line: 5/11 FG, 1/1 FT, 7 Reb (first half), 2 Asst, 3 TO, 1 Blk.

Adam Hall: Still doesn't have the spring (or hops as he likes to call them) he needs, but played an great game anyway. Accurate from the outside, hitting all three of his 3-pointers. Played very little in the second half. Still getting over a deep knee bruise and likely needed the rest.

Hall's line: 5/8 FG, 3/3 3FG, 3 Reb, 2 TO, 2 Stl.

J.C. Mathis: Didn't look particularly fluid. Grabbed 3 rebounds before sitting the bench for a majority of the first half. Had one assist, hit 1 of 2 shots from the field, turned the ball over twice.

Elton Brown: Dominated inside. Hit 4/7 from field and 8 of 10 from line. Grabbed four rebounds. Sadly, had 5 turnovers, mostly due to trapping on the blocks and hacking at the ball. The refs weren't calling a lot of low post fouls, so Brown would have likely had another 6-8 free throws had they called the game more closely.

Keith Jenifer: Although he threw the ball away a couple of times really late in the game (when the lead was 53 points), he played with poise. Jenifer tied Mason for a team high 6 assists and only had 3 turnovers. He pushed the ball extremely well, often finding Clark down low. Unfortunately, Clark had a little trouble finishing tonight (missed two dunks) or Jenifer might have a lot more assists. Perhaps the best play from Jenifer came at the defensive end. He stuck to his man like glue. Jenifer shot 2/3 from the field with his only miss coming from 3-point range. He also grabbed 4 rebounds.

Jermaine Harper: Played with speed and poise. Once many of the starters were out, Harper used that time to turn on the juice. He had some nice shake-bake moves, and even brought the ball up the floor a couple of times. Shot 4/7 from FG range, grabbed 4 rebounds. Here's the impressive number... 5 assists NO TURNOVERS! 2 steals, although it felt like he had a lot more than that.

Jason Clark: Very active. 5 rebounds, 1 block, 1 steal, 1 assist. He hit all three of his free throws and shot 3/7 from the field. Made some great moves down low, but missed some easy shots. Probably just needs to settle down a bit. Did I mention that he's an active player?

Jason Rogers: Rogers came into the game with 10 minutes to play. He was joined by all four freshmen. They went on a 19-9 run with this lineup. Rogers was the beneficiary of some great passing and finished strong with 2 monster slams. He had one rebounds and registered two blocked shots. A good effort by Rogers.

Jason Dowling: Was 1/3 from the field. Missed a couple of 3-pointers. He probably didn't know it, but his team would have tied the record for most 3-pointers made in a game with 15 had he dropped just one of those 3's. FYI: UVa shot 11/15 from behind the arc in the first half. Dowling got a steal and assist during his 4 minutes on the floor.

Bret Gladstone: Yep, even Bret got into the scoring column. He nailed his only shot of the game, a 3-pointer from the right corner. He also had an assist.

Overall, the Hoos played under control and with purpose in a win that was a rout from the start. Usually, a team will lose their composure when the lead gets into the 30's, but not UVa. The Cavs worked hard almost every trip up the court and extended their lead to 56 with just under six minutes to play.

During the post-game interviews, Williams and Mason echoed that the real test begins next Wednesday night and that they are responsible for making the freshmen understand the difference between the levels of competition.

Team Stats: 43/73 FG (59 percent), 14/24 3FG, 15-20 FT, 27 Asst, 21 TO, 6 Blk, 10 Stl. 44 Rebounds to 29 for Howard. Howard shot 38 percent for the game, the third team in a row that UVa has held under 40 percent shooting.

Reynolds, Cavs Wheel Past Wake
Image: J.R. ReynoldsWhen Wake Forest visited Virginia last season, guard J.R. Reynolds grabbed the late-game spotlight with a clutch game-winning floater in University Hall. Reynolds didn't wait until the final 5 seconds to steal the show this time around in the John Paul Jones Arena. Reynolds poured in a career-high 40 points as the Cavaliers took an 88-76 victory Sunday against the Demon Deacons.

Image: Sean SingletaryAfter dropping two ACC road contests, the Virginia men's basketball team returned to the John Paul Jones Arena earlier this week to take on Maryland. The Hoos picked up a 103-91 victory to improve to 2-2 in the league standings thanks to some outstanding performances by Sean Singletary, Jason Cain, Mamadi Diane, and others. Check out 91 images from the game in this photo gallery.

Snelling Excited For Shrine Game Opportunity
Image: Jason SnellingFormer Virginia running back Jason Snelling's post-UVa career gets under way this weekend when he represents the Cavaliers in the East-West Shrine Game on Saturday, which kicks off at 7 p.m. Snelling was invited to play in the game in November and accepted shortly after that offer. He is suiting up for the East roster.

Scouting Report: Wake Forest
Image: Ben D'AlessandroVirginia picked up a key ACC victory earlier this week when it knocked off the visiting Maryland Terrapins. Can the Hoos make it two in a row on Sunday? Wake Forest enters this game in last place in the league standings with a 1-4 conference record. Still with 6'11" Kyle Visser down low, the Demon Deacons could put up a fight in Charlottesville. Former ACC assistant coach Ben D'Alessandro takes a look at Visser and the Deacs with this scouting report.

Tucker's Touch Helping Hoos
Image: Jamil TuckerA deft outside shooting touch is something not normally associated with a 6'8" forward. But don't tell that to Virginia freshman Jamil Tucker. The native of California, who came to Virginia via Gary, Ind., has emerged in recent weeks to make opponents pay when they leave him open - and that is paying dividends for the Hoos.

Best Seat in the House: Chris Horne and Lamar Milstead
With football's February 7 signing day rapidly approaching, Jed Williams and The Best Seat in the House are keeping an eye on Virginia's recruiting situation. This week, Sabre recruiting analyst Chris Horne joined Williams to talk about the Cavaliers' class, the recent commitments, and more. Plus, Lamar Milstead, who switched to the Hoos from North Carolina, appeared on the show to talk about his decision and his future with the Cavs.

Rollercoaster Ride Resumes For Hoo Fans
Image: J.R. ReynoldsAt the conclusion of my article on the football season's highs and lows, I proclaimed bravely that I could be signed up for next season instantly. I love Virginia athletics, and I can handle another trip on the rollercoaster. But I didn't figure I'd be forced to handle it again so soon. J.R. Reynolds and the men's basketball team thrust me back into the first car quickly so now I'm ready to just throw my hands up and scream.

Things I Learned About ... The Defensive Line
Image: Jeffrey FitzgeraldThere may have been no unit that I enjoyed watching last year as much as the defensive line. Why? Because after a season of development, we may have no unit with more upside going into next season. Barring injury, I believe that Chris Long, Jeffrey Fitzgerald, and Nate Collins represent the best returning unit of the Al Groh era. With that in mind, let's look at Things I Learned About The Defensive Line.

Hoos Hand Terps 103-91 Loss
Image: Mamadi DianeVirginia returned home on Tuesday evening and got its season back on track with a rousing 103-91 victory against No. 22 ranked Maryland. Sophomore swingman Mamadi Diane led UVa (10-6, 2-2 ACC) with a career-high 26 points. Four other Cavaliers - Sean Singletary (25 points), J.R. Reynolds (17), Jason Cain (13), and Jamil Tucker (12) - scored in double figures in the win.

Marcus Accepts Falcons Position
Image: Strength Coach Evan MarcusEvan Marcus is leaving his position as head strength coach and director of the McCue Center Weight Room at Virginia to join the staff of the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League (NFL). Marcus, who was at Virginia for four years, oversaw strength and conditioning activities for all 25 of the Cavaliers' varsity sports.

Scouting Report: Maryland
Image: Ben D'AlessandroCarrying a three-game losing streak, the Virginia men's basketball team will try to get back on track with a game in the John Paul Jones Arena, where the Hoos are 8-1. The opponent this time around is the Maryland Terrapins, a team that has won six straight games in this series after UVa swept the two 2003 meetings. How can the Cavaliers overcome the Terps in this season's first match-up? Former ACC assistant coach Ben D'Alessandro takes an in-depth look with this scouting report.

Jed's Best Seat Buzz: What You See ...
Image: Jed Williams"You are what you are." In the gallery of Grohisms, this one has a wing all to itself. Of course, Al wasn't referring to Dave Leitao's Cavalier hoops squad in his 4,178 (rough approximation) applications of the phrase, but he might has well have been.
