Special Recognitions Part of Arena's Opening

Official Release, Virginia Athletic Media Relations

Curtis Staples

Some of the most recognizable individuals in Virginia's men's basketball history received special recognition Sunday night at halftime of Virginia's 93-90 victory over Arizona at the John Paul Jones Arena.

Former players Barry Parkhill and Wally Walker, and former head coach Terry Holland were honored by having areas of the John Paul Jones Arena dedicated in their names. They are the Barry Parkhill Practice Court, the Wally Walker Virginia Basketball Hall of Fame and the Terry Holland Men's Locker Room.

"The impact of Terry Holland as a coach, Wally Walker as a player and Barry Parkhill as a player and as a significant figure in the athletics department in the campaign to get the arena started, all have contributed significantly to the tradition of Virginia basketball," said UVa athletics director Craig Littlepage.

"The level to which these three outstanding gentlemen have contributed to the success of Virginia athletics, as well as Virginia basketball, is demonstrated by the way friends of the University and athletics department have responded by participating in the campaign to have these facilities named in their honor."

Walker led Virginia to its only Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Basketball Tournament championship and its first NCAA Tournament berth in 1976. He is the only Cavalier to receive the Everett Case Award as the ACC Tournament's Most Valuable Player. He received the award after Virginia upset three nationally-ranked teams en route to the 1976 ACC title. Walker scored 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the championship game against North Carolina.

Walker's scoring average of 22.1 points a game during the 1975-76 season ranks as the sixth best in UVa history and his 1,849 career points rank sixth on Virginia's all-time list. His number (41) is retired at UVa. Walker was the fifth player chosen in the 1976 NBA draft, taken by the Portland Trail Blazers.

Parkhill was one of the best all-purpose guards in the ACC from 1971-73. He led the conference in scoring with an average of 21.6 points a game as a junior in 1972, when the Cavaliers went 21-7 and were selected to play in the National Invitation Tournament for only the second time in school history. That season he was named ACC Player of the Year and later conference Athlete of the Year. He also earned first-team All-America honors. Parkhill compiled a career average of 18.2 points a game and totaled 369 assists, which was tops in Virginia history at the time. The figures helped him become only the second player in school history to have his number (40) retired.

In 1974 Holland became Virginia men's head basketball coach. His teams compiled a record of 326-173 in 16 seasons, becoming the winningest men's basketball coach in UVa history. Among Holland's many accomplishments at Virginia are a pair of Final Four appearances (1981 and 1984) and a National Invitation Tournament title (1980). He also earned two ACC Coach of the Year awards. From 1995 to 2001 Holland served as the athletics director at Virginia, a position he now holds at East Carolina.

In addition, the jersey of former Virginia men's basketball standout Curtis Staples was retired during the halftime ceremonies. Staples, a guard from Roanoke, Va., finished his Virginia career in 1998 as the NCAA's career leader in three-point field goals made with 413. His mark held until Duke's J.J. Redick established a new NCAA record for three-point field goals made (457) last season. Staples currently ranks third on the NCAA's career three-point field goals made list. He led the Atlantic Coast Conference in three-point field goals made per game during each of his four seasons at Virginia.

Staples ranks ninth on Virginia's career scoring list with 1,757 points. He lettered four times for the Cavaliers and was a team captain as a senior during the 1997-98 season. Staples averaged a career-high 18.1 points a game during the 1997-98 season and earned third-team All-ACC honors.

Earlier on Sunday, at halftime of the Virginia women's basketball team's 92-72 victory over Old Dominion, the UVa women's basketball locker room at the John Paul Jones Arena was named the Debbie Ryan Women's Locker Room in recognition of the Cavaliers' long-time coach. Debbie Ryan is in her 30th season as the head coach of the Virginia women's basketball team.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Basketball recruiting .

Patrick Patterson

Last night was an excellent night for UVa men's basketball as the team came away with a big-time win in the regular season opener at John Paul Jones Arena. A number of recruits were on hand over the weekend, and TheSabre.com will bring you coverage of all the visitors in attendance.

Three senior recruits were in Charlottesville on official visits this past weekend. The trio was headlined by five-star power forward Patrick Patterson, who, along with his parents, was seen in attendance for last night's game. Patterson is a 6-8, 235-pound prospect out of Huntington, West Virginia. Also in town making their official visits were 6-3 guard Mustapha Farrakhan (Thornton Township - Harvey, IL) and 7-0 center Tomasz Kwiatkowski (Lee Academy - Maine).

Senior forward Mike Scott, a 6-8 recruit who is currently at Hargrave Military Academy, was said to be in attendance on an unofficial visit. Top junior recruit Ed Davis was there as well. Davis is considered a five-star prospect as a junior at Benedictine.

UVa has signed two players in the early signing period so far. They are Sam Zeglinski, a 6-1, 180-pound point guard out of Penn Charter (Philadelphia, PA), and Jeff Jones, a 6-4, 185-pound guard out of Monsignor Bonner (Drexel Hill, PA).

Zeglinski, who was also at the opener, averaged 19 points, five assists and three steals per game last season as a junior. He is rated a three-star prospect. Jones, a four-star recruit, averaged 21.9 points per game last season as a junior.

Football Recruiting .

The men's basketball program had its big recruiting weekend this past weekend. One week later, the football program will host a number of recruits for the Miami game. Stay tuned, as we will compile a list of visitors for this upcoming weekend. Among those uncommitted prospects expected in attendance are Mitchell Schwartz, a 6-5, 300-pound offensive lineman out of Pacific Palisades, California, and Dontrelle Inman, a 6-3, 185-pound wide receiver out of Batesburg-Leesville in South Carolina. Schwartz will be making an official visit, while Inman is only scheduled to make an unofficial at this time.

Game ball .

This week's game ball goes to West Springfield quarterback Peter Lalich, who completed 35 of 46 passes for 452 yards and three touchdowns in last Friday's 59-29 win over South County. The 6-5, 225-pound Lalich did not throw a single interception in the win.

West Springfield (Springfield, VA) season is over with a 4-6 record. In what was an outstanding performance, Lalich finished his senior season with 208 completions out of 307 attempts (67.8 completion percentage) for 3,133 yards with 32 touchdowns to only seven interceptions.

This weekend will be an exciting one for several UVa commits. Henry Clay (Chase Minnifield) is in the state quarterfinals. Good Counsel (Nick Jenkins) is in the finals of the WCAC playoffs. Yorktown (Max Milien) is the number two seed in the Division 5, Northern Region playoffs. Matoaca (Kris Burd) is the number one seed in the Division 5, Central Region playoffs. And, last but not least, Roman Catholic (Dom Joseph) is in the Catholic League semifinal.

Zeglinski Excited to Sign with Hoos
Image: Sam ZeglinskiToday, 6-1, 180-pound point guard recruit Sam Zeglinski will sign a letter of intent with the University of Virginia. After being committed to the program for over a year, the Penn Charter (Philadelphia, PA) star is certainly happy to "officially" be a part of the program. "It is real exciting. I'm finally signing after being committed for a year," Zeglinski said.

Jones' Terrific Official Visit Experience
Image: Jeff JonesFour-star guard Jeff Jones, who committed to the University of Virginia in August of this year, made his official visit to UVa this past weekend. The 6-4, 185-pound prospect enjoyed his time in Charlottesville, getting a glimpse into what his next four years will be like.

2008 Class: Friendly's Dynamic Duo
Friendly High School (Fort Washington, MD) boasts at least two top targets for the 2008 class. They are Josh Haden and Lamaar Thomas, both of whom have already received Division 1A scholarship offers according to Friendly assistant coach Marcus Berry. UVa has offered one of these kids and is also keeping a close eye on senior wide receiver Vincent Hill, who has turned in an outstanding performance this season.

Posts of the Week

Opening night at the JPJ was a good night for Sean Singletary and the Hoos.

Subject: Ahhhh, last night was certainly memorable...
Posted by: WahooFla on Mon Nov 13 2006 9:28:09 AM
Message: with a HUGE thank you to my donor friend Josh, we had great seats, and in my first JPJ experience, I was awe-struck with the facility. We have seats that are right on the aisle, nobody in front of us, only 3 or 4 steps up to ground level, where we find restrooms right around the corner and a concession stand right across the all. Hell, as old farts, we even have a first aid station right across the hall!!!! I guess we could pass out from the excitement and get immediate attention!

I was somewhat concerned at our play in the first half, particularly on defense(I HATE zones!!!), where I thought we looked almost lazy and soft. We missed way too many slices to the basket because we didn't have the strength to finish strong, taking most of them under the basket to come up from the other side....always a sign of tentativeness.

Then came the 2nd half, and it was all reversed. We played a lot of man, and played it much more aggressively, and we took the ball much stronger to the hoop. Coach used his bench beautifully, and Jason Cain really came alive and started gobbling up the rebounds and loose balls, as only he can do. I thought our pressure eventually tired 'Zona, and we definitely had more energy than they did the last 7 or 8 minutes. Part of that was the crowd, but I attribute most of it to adroit substitutions by our coaches. Coach L was terrific in this game!

The atmosphere was terrific, even in the first half, although the game was somewhat of a yawner the first 20 minutes.

I was fortunate to be in attendance at the first game in U-Hall, the last game in U-Hall, and now the first game in JPJ. All three were great experiences, but last night we WON. That makes a big difference.

I think this team has very good potential, although we clearly have a lot of work to do. We still struggle to find production in the paint, and our big guys seemed a bit confused at times. The ball-handling was terrific overall, but we can set screens much better, and we have a couple of youngsters who haven't figured out where they're supposed to be.

I can definitely see us in the top half of the ACC, but I don't see us much over .500 in the ACC at this point, unless we get significantly better underneath.

Overall, I'd give the facility an A, the crowd an A-, the coaching staff an A-, and the players a B for skillset and A for heart. It was a great evening!!!

By the way, all you whiners who've been complaining about everything from quality of seats to the A/V system to all the ads: get over it!!! This is an incredible facility, and it's going to be a gold mine for UVa Athletics. Thank you to ALL the donors, especially my friend, Josh! If we're after a recruit who wasn't impressed last night, we should drop him off our list.

Subject: WOW, WOW, WOW....That is my feeling
Posted by: hoomanchew on Mon Nov 13 2006 9:28:21 AM
Message: What a night! Everything was awesome.....I am glad I was there and a part of that! A few random thoughts.

My hoops season starts today (9-10, 11-12 year old teams I coach) I am INSPIRED! The whole day was perfect, bw3's with good friends and then the comeback. In a way, I am glad we came back from way down, just added to the already great night!

The arena..awesome. Loud, and hopefully we will be able to get many people in there for every game. I understand that "lower level" teams won't draw as much, but it is built so even if we only have 10-12 k it will be very loud. My only gripe, the 1 student section, section 301(I think) up in the corner took a while to get filled, understandable, but IF the team gets better, ect, that wont be a problem. The other student section around the floor, and behind the basket was ROCKIN! Great job by the students!

Not gonna anylize the game so much, but will say Mo, SS and Caine deserve props! Reynold showed heart, and is a GREAT hoo'. Lars was reckless, a little to emotional maybe, but every player that got on the court did something positive! Tat forced a few shots but he has ZERO fear! Petila (sp?) played well early. All in all what a great night, and I look forward to some more great games there. UVa did all hoo' fans proud with this arena!

1 more thing...I am now in the "assemblage of Cain" fan club!

WAHOOWA!

Subject: J.R. symbolizes team's toughness...
Posted by: Hoos1&1 on Mon Nov 13 2006 8:07:15 AM
Message: When he first entered the game with the goggles I was just glad to have him out there for his court presence, leadership, etc. But when he shed those goggles and risked his own safety for his teammates I realized why it's so much fun being a fan of this team. Thanks, J.R.!

   SabreMail History

Issue No. 167 - December 3, 2004

Men's basketball stays unbeaten

Elton Brown has four double-doubles in five games.

Rebounding and defense were the two biggest question marks for the Virginia basketball team going into the 2004-05 season. So far, those have been the Cavaliers' only constants.

In five games this season, the Wahoos have outrebounded every opponent and held each team to 60 points or fewer. Last season UVa grabbed an average of 5.3 fewer rebounds than its opponents and held just three of 31 teams under 64 points. Now that's progress.

Even though their shooting has been inconsistent, their effort has been outstanding. Elton Brown already has recorded four double-doubles, including 15 points and 12 rebounds in a 48-44 triumph at Northwestern in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge on Wednesday. It was the fewest points the Cavs have allowed in Pete Gillen's seven years as head coach.

Having earned a No. 24 ranking, Virginia will try to keep up the good work tonight against Auburn (5-0) at the Siegel Center in Richmond. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.

In Case You Missed It ...

Sabre articles from the past week

Virginia Opens Arena By Axing Arizona
Image: Mamadi DianeWhen Virginia first envisioned a new shining home for its basketball teams, nights like this were part of the dreams. The John Paul Jones Arena filled to the brim, Hoos with bright smiles in bright orange. A team willing to put everything it has on the line in front of a crowd waiting to adore their efforts. A top 10 opponent falling by the wayside. Yes, Virginia there is a new Cavalier castle and the Hoos delivered a rousing first win with a 93-90 victory over No. 10 Arizona on Sunday night.

Cavalier Women Open JPJ With Win
Image: Coach Debbie RyanDebbie Ryan said the pre-game ceremonies felt like being in a movie. The Virginia women's basketball team made sure the first official game in the John Paul Jones Arena followed a Hollywood-like script. The Hoos never trailed against Old Dominion and needed less than 5 minutes to pull out to a 10-point lead that never fell into single digits again. UVa eventually cruised to a 92-72 victory.

2006-07 MBB Preview: 10 Key Questions (Part II)
Image: Mamadi DianeWith Virginia's basketball season just days away, there is some debate among fans as to how high the expectations should be for 2006-07. Regardless of your opinion, however, everyone agrees that there are certain questions about this year's Hoos that will determine just how successful they end up being. The Sabre has formulated 10 Questions whose answers could determine just how good this team becomes. Part II follows.

2006-07 MBB Preview: 10 Things To Look Forward To
Image: JPJ ArenaThe leaves are past peak, Halloween is a memory, and the holiday commercials are creeping onto our televisions. The unmistakable harbingers of another basketball season! In our recent past, basketball season was that bleak period of time when we'd debate tourney snubs and buy-out clauses. The Gillenium conditioned me to dread the months from November through March. Well, for the first time in many seasons, I'm actually looking forward to a number of things as the Hoos hit the hardwood - so many that I could even compile a Top 10 list!

Greg's Game Grades: FSU 33, UVa 0
Image: Jason SnellingVirginia's trip to Florida State last weekend was a bitter one. The Hoos fell behind by two touchdowns early and never recovered in a 33-0 shutout loss. There may have been a few bright spots (Jason Snelling had 108 all-purpose yards), but as a whole, this was not a good showing. As one might imagine, the grades reflect the poor performance.

2006-07 MBB Preview: 10 Key Questions (Part I)
Image: J.R. ReynoldsWith the positive vibes surrounding the Virginia men's basketball program and the John Paul Jones Arena ready to rock, fans, coaches, and players are ready to get this season started. Of course, much of that excitement is focused on having a great year in the JPJ and making a run at an NCAA Tournament return. As with any team in any season, of course, there are some questions about that will determine just how high these Hoos can climb. The Sabre tackles 10 Questions whose answers could determine just how good this team becomes. Check out Part I.

Jed's Best Seat Buzz: Does Leitao's Team Have "It"?
Image: Jed Williams"It." The latest, greatest sports platitude - heir to the "help my team win" and "give 110 percent" throne - "it" gets tossed about these days without much hesitation or thought. All of which seems unfair, untrue, and misplaced. Because only a select smattering of teams exude anything remotely resembling "it." Of the UVa programs that I've covered directly as a broadcaster and reporter over the last seven years, I recall only three "it" squads. But there may be another one waiting in the wings for 2006-07.

JHoo: 10 Things I Learned Against FSU
Image: Florida State SeminolesThe Virginia football team added another game to its losing streak in the state of Florida last weekend with a 33-0 loss at Florida State. The Seminoles jumped out to an early 14-0 lead and the final margin truly grew after halftime. Despite the disappointing defeat, the game is still worth a closer look. Here's 10 Things I Learned Against Florida State.

2006-07 MBB Preview: Points of Emphasis
Image: Sean SingletaryAs Dave Leitao enters his second season at Virginia, we have a better idea of what to expect from his program. There are certain things that he expects in games and preaches in practice - more depth and talent on the roster should allow him to harp on those tenets even more in 2006-07. So exactly what are the Points of Emphasis for Sean Singletary and the Hoos?

The Turning Point - FSU
Image: Florida State SeminolesBelieve me, I've seen the message board zingers and I've heard the sports talk radio jokes. What was "The Turning Point" of Virginia's 33-0 loss at Florida State? When the Cavs came out for warm-ups. When they got off the bus. No, when the plane landed in Florida. Actually, it was when the schedule was issued.

2006-07 MBB Preview: Schedule Analysis
Image: Coach Dave LeitaoIn many ways, the 2006-07 men's basketball season is about a new beginning. Obviously, the Cavaliers have moved into the John Paul Jones Arena - that in and of itself signals a fresh start. Plus, this is just the second year of the Dave Leitao era. Most importantly, perhaps, the Hoos are eyeing a renewed tradition of excellence with hopes of an NCAA Tournament berth. What will it take to get there? The Sabre's season preview begins with a look at the schedule.
