This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Football recruiting .

Last week, UVa landed another prospect for a key need area when 6-7, 270-pound Landon Bradley pledged to the Hoos. Bradley is an offensive lineman recruit out of Conway High School in South Carolina. He plays offensive tackle for Conway and expects to end up there on the next level as well.

Bradley landed an official scholarship offer from Virginia around mid-October. He attended UVa's summer camp this year and performed well. So well, in fact, that UVa Head Coach Al Groh indicated that an offer would be on the table should Bradley be ready to commit on the spot. Bradley decided to wait and so an offer was not extended at the time.

Bradley blossomed this offseason. As a junior last season, he played at around 6-5, 230 pounds. He added two inches and 40 pounds this offseason and has impressed so far this fall, garnering serious attention from Florida State, LSU, and South Carolina, among others. UVa was the first and only Division 1A school to offer at the time of his commitment.

Twenty-two players have committed for UVa's 2007 recruiting class. Among the group, Hargrave OL Billy Cuffee (a holdover from the 2006 class) and Pottsville (PA) standout Brad Hallick join Bradley as recruits certain to play on the offensive line. Several others could end up there, however.

Hargrave 28, Fork Union 16

I was on hand last for last Friday's game between Hargrave Military Academy and Fork Union. Hargrave, which was the home team, came away with the win. Stay tuned today for a report on the game and UVa's commitments as well as more on the Jarrell Miller situation. Miller, a former Highland Springs standout linebacker who is now at Fork Union, has reopened his recruitment after originally signing with UNC last February.

Game ball .

There is a tie for this week's game ball, which is split among some familiar names.

First, it is playoff time for Henry Clay High School in Lexington, Kentucky. And star recruit Chase Minnifield shined in his team's 49-7 win over Scott County in the first round of the Class AAAA state playoffs. The 6-0, 185-pound Minnifield rushed for 130 yards and scored two touchdowns, including the first score of the game. He was 7 for 7 on extra points as well.

Henry Clay faces Woodford County this week.

Image: Peter LalichWest Springfield QB Peter Lalich bounced back from a two-interception performance last week with an eight-touchdown performance in last Friday's 63-15 win over Hayfield. The 6-5, 225-pound signal caller completed 19 of 22 passes for 356 yards and eight touchdowns. He now has 29 touchdowns on the season to only seven interceptions.

Honorable mention: Yorktown RB Max Milien continues to show that he has bounced back from a knee injury that kept him out of the early season. The 6-1, 195-pound back rushed 11 times for 147 yards in Yorktown's 38-0 win over Wakefield. Milien scored three touchdowns, including two on the ground and one receiving. Yorktown is now 8-1 on the season.

Basketball recruiting .

Image: Patrick PattersonThis coming weekend promises to be a big one for the Hoos. Five-star power forward Patrick Patterson (Huntington, W.V.), 7-0 center Tomasz Kwiatkowski (Lee Academy, ME), and 6-3 guard Mustapha Farrakhan are all expected to be in town this weekend on official visits. Top junior recruit Ed Davis, a forward prospect out of Benedictine (Richmond, VA), is also expected to be on hand.

Check out feature profiles on Kwiatkowski and Farrakhan from last week on the Sabre EDGE. You can also find numerous articles on the 6-8, 235-pound Patrick Patterson.

Stay tuned this week as we continue to track the recruitment of Mike Scott, the 6-8, 215-pound power forward out of Hargrave. Scott has taken official visits to UVa and N.C. State. Several sources indicate that UVa could get a commitment soon, so stay tuned. Scott is also considering Clemson and Wake Forest at this time.

Also, stay tuned for the latest on current UVa commits Sam Zeglinski and Jeff Jones. The four-star Jones made his official visit to UVa this past weekend.

Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Sewell Progressing at Hargrave
Image: Almondo SewellThe Military school experience can be difficult for some, but not for Almondo Sewell. The 6-0, 245-pound linebacker recruit seems to have enjoyed his time at Hargrave so far - very much so, in fact - and is looking forward to putting what he has learned to good use at the University of Virginia.

Schwartz Schedules Second Visit to UVa
The offensive line continues to be a big need for the Virginia staff in the 2007 recruiting class. So, with scholarship spots dwindling, look for the staff to try and bring in at least two quality big men. Al Groh and company will host 6-5, 305-pound Mitchell Schwartz on an official visit in November and are hoping to impress.

Mike Scott Makes Second Official Visit
Image: Mike Scott6-8, 215-pound Hargrave Military Academy power forward Mike Scott made what was his second official visit this past weekend, when he traveled to N.C. State. The native of Chesapeake (VA) had a good visit, which came a week after an official visit to the University of Virginia. What's next for the talented athlete?

Issue No. 167 - December 3, 2004

Pearman nominated for Dudley Award

Each year the Virginia football coaches have to nominate one player for the Dudley Award, which goes to the top player in the state. Sometimes that's a tough decision. This year it was probably pretty easy.

Senior tailback Alvin Pearman has done it all for the Cavs.

Alvin Pearman, whose versatility and productivity have made him an indispensable player for the 2004 Cavaliers, will go to the Sheraton West Hotel in Richmond next Wednesday for the Dudley Award ceremony. The other candidates are quarterbacks Bryan Randall of Virginia Tech and Lang Campbell of William & Mary.

Randall probably will win the honor, but Pearman has had a superb senior season. In 11 games, he has rushed 186 times for 985 yards, caught 26 passes for 381 yards, returned 28 punts for 314 yards and returned four kickoffs for 164 yards. He has scored 11 touchdowns (nine rushing, one receiving, one punt return) and leads the ACC by a wide margin with 167.6 all-purpose yards per game. He even has four tackles on special teams.

Pearman also has carried the Cavalier offense in the second half of the season. Against Virginia Tech, he rushed 28 times for 147 yards, caught a 32-yard touchdown pass and added 64 return yards for a grand total of 243 all-purpose yards. If only Virginia had 10 more players just like him.

In Case You Missed It ...

Sabre articles from the past week

Cavaliers Win Exhibition Tune-Up
Image: Sean SingletaryThe Virginia basketball team opened Dave Leitao's second season with a 78-63 exhibition game victory on Saturday night in the first men's game in the new John Paul Jones Arena. The Hoos used a hot-shooting first half (53.3 percent) to pull ahead of Augusta State and never really let the visitors back in the contest. Sean Singletary had 13 points and 8 assists in the win.

Seminoles Smash Hoos
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Every other year for the past 15 years, Virginia has traveled to Tallahassee to do battle with Florida State. The results have generally been ugly for the Cavaliers and that trend continued Saturday as Virginia was routed 33-0 by the Seminoles at Doak-Campbell Stadium.

Keys to the Game - Florida State
Image: Coach Al GrohO.K. Virginia has never won in Florida. Everyone knows that. In Tallahassee, it usually isn't even close. But as Al Groh likes to say about these sorts of streaks - previous years have nothing to do with the current contest. With that in mind, what can the Cavaliers do this year to knock off the Seminoles? Here are "5 Keys to the Game" if the Hoos want to get a win.

Why or Why Not? - Florida State
Image: Wes McElroyThe Cavaliers head south on Saturday for a showdown with the Seminoles. Of course, Virginia won last year's football contest in Charlottesville. However, the Hoos have never won in the state of Florida. Can the Cavaliers pull off a victory this week? Will Jason Snelling continue to run the ball well? Will Mike Brown have a big day on punt returns? ESPN 840 AM's Wes McElroy tackles 5 'Why or Why Not' questions.

Game Preview: Florida State, Part 3
Image: Florida State SeminolesFlorida State's defense still has some reasonably high rankings this season - 10th in scoring defense, 6th in passing defense, and 6th in the country in overall defense. But this isn't the same ol' D. Injuries have hammered the Seminoles and they have held just one opponent to under 10 points all season long. That was Rice. Even Duke and Troy scored a few points on the vaunted FSU defense. Can Virginia do the same?

Hoos Tailgating With Mom - Apple Fritters
The Cavaliers start their November stretch of games with a trip to Tallahassee. For Hoos still at home, that means cheering from the couch. For fans making the trip, that means another noon kickoff and earlier tailgating. Regardless of which group you are in this week, these brunch recipes are appropriate for breakfast or afternoon munchies.

The Hawk's Nest - Tough Places To Play
Image: Ahmad HawkinsWith a hard fought 14-7 win last week against N.C. State, the Virginia Cavaliers look to keep the winning ball rolling this Saturday against the Florida State Seminoles. The Cavs will be looking to add to their winning streak of two games and also will be trying to win their first ever game in Tallahassee. It won't be easy because Florida State has one of the toughest venues in college football.

Best Seat in the House: Roger Mason Jr.
Image: Roger MasonFormer Virginia star Roger Mason Jr. is the last Cavalier to be selected in the NBA Draft (2002) and the only former Hoo currently on an active NBA roster - Mason made the cut with the Washington Wizards this season to return to the league. Mason joined Jed Williams on The Best Seat in the House to talk about returning to the NBA, his time overseas, Virginia basketball, and more.

Game Preview: Florida State, Part 2
Image: Marcus Hamilton vs. Greg Carr is a key match-up this weekend.Florida State is the defending ACC Champion, but things haven't been going all that well in Tallahassee. The Seminoles are sitting in the Atlantic Division cellar and they've lost four conference games so far in 2006. Still, the FSU offense is dangerous when it is clicking. What can the Hoos' defense expect this week? Truthfully, it is hard to say - the Noles are unpredictable on offense and quarterback Xavier Lee adds a different kind of weapon under center.

Lundy Bounces Back From Slow NFL Start
Image: Wali LundyAfter two weeks of being designated inactive and three weeks without a single carry, Wali Lundy got a second chance with the Houston Texans against Jacksonville two weeks ago. The former Virginia standout made the most of it and he seems to be finding a groove in Texas. Certainly fans of the Hoos and Texans are hoping it is the start of bigger things to come.

Jed's Best Seat Buzz: Learning How To Win
Image: Jed WilliamsTo some, it was a droll 14-7 grinder (a good buddy of mine called it "the most boring game EVER!"). A puntfest (17 combined) as much as a pointfest. A lazy autumn afternoon at The Scott where you could safely nod off for a couple of hours and miss virtually nothing ... at least the scoreboard would tell you as much. I'll take a different, far stronger tack on Virginia's narrow win over N.C. State. Landmark.

Game Preview: Florida State, Part 1
Image: Florida State SeminolesThe Seminoles are ranked 22nd in the nation in rushing defense, 10th in scoring defense, 6th in passing defense, and 6th in the country in overall defense. Bottom line? The Noles can play defense. Over the last four weeks the respective offenses have been relatively equal. That means if there is an edge to be had for Virginia, it could come on special teams.

A Fan's Notes from the Upper Deck - N.C. State
Image: Kevin OgletreeEvery year, my group of college buddies picks a Virginia football game as the stage for our annual reunion. Often, we stage the annual gathering at a road game to witness the college football environment of another program: Wisconsin, Penn State, Boston College, and South Carolina are examples. And while we enjoy visiting new schools and stadiums, our favorite reunions are the years we pick a home game. And this year, we luckily picked the battle against the Wolfpack.

Greg's Game Grades: UVa 14, N.C. State 7
Image: Jason SnellingA pair of defenses slugged it out at Scott Stadium on Saturday, meaning Virginia's offense had to come up with a late-game drive, which Jason Snelling capped with a touchdown run to give UVa a 14-7 win. The Cavaliers seemed to control the flow of the contest throughout, however, and several units performed well in the victory. How did the grades shake out?

Photo Gallery: Virginia 14, N.C. State 7
Image: Branden AlbertThe Virginia football team picked up a big ACC win against N.C. State on Saturday, dropping the Wolfpack 14-7 at Scott Stadium. Several Cavaliers had solid performances - Jason Snelling had both touchdowns in the win, Tony Franklin had a game-sealing interception, and Branden Albert played well enough to be named the ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week. Check out 133 photos in this gallery from the game.

The Turning Point - N.C. State
Image: Jameel SewellVirginia had held its 7-0 lead for most of the afternoon, but N.C. State came up with a late touchdown drive to tie things. That left UVa with another home lead hanging in the balance and less than five minutes to remedy the situation. The first two plays of the game-winning drive followed and they were "The Turning Point" in a 14-7 win against the Wolfpack.
