But that's not all. The Sabre has also compiled a directory of opponents' Web sites so you can read up on the Cavaliers' opponent from behind enemy lines. The Pittsburgh example is linked here, but most of the Web sites for the football and basketball teams' opponents have been linked in our Other Sites section. That makes it easy to check up on UVa's opponents before the opening kickoff!

That doesn't even include the articles you get as part of our premium EDGE coverage. Each week, you'll receive features, columns, and analysis on the Hoos' next game. If you want to be "in the know" and impress your buddies at the next tailgate, the EDGE is the place to be. This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Basketball recruiting takes forefront .

Alexis Wangmene, a 6-8, 235-pound power forward prospect, made an unofficial visit to UVa last week. Though this was the second time the standout prospect had visited UVa, we keep hearing that the University of Texas could be the team to beat here. Wangmene resides in San Antonio with his guardians. He will transfer to Blair Academy in New Jersey for this upcoming season.

Besides Wangmene, UVa is seriously in the running for two other low post prospects in the class of 2007. One is Patrick Patterson, the 5-star recruit out of Huntington (WV), while the other is Solomon Alabi out of Montverde Academy. The 6-8, 235-pound Patterson is down to six schools and UVa is one of them. Duke and Kentucky are among a few others. UVa is vying for an official visit spot from the talented player.

Alabi, a native of Nigeria, has narrowed his list to three schools - UVa, Arizona, and Florida State. The 7-1, 235-pound center will make official visits to all three schools (beginning with UVa on September 9) before making a commitment.

Football recruiting .

This week, TheSabre.com will release its PreSeason Top 30. There will be some movement from the PreSummer Top 30, as more prospects have come to light and more film has been viewed. Stay tuned for this toward the end of the week to read this feature.

One newcomer to the list will be Henrico's Corey Mosley, a 5-9, 192-pound athlete prospect. Mosley has made at least three trips to UVa including a recent trip for a practice. Mosley holds offers from UVa, Virginia Tech, and Tennessee. He is not sure when he will make a decision.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

PreSeason Check-in: 4-Star LB Terence Fells-Danzer
Image: Terence Fells-DanzerDespite it being his first-ever season competing in track last spring, UVa football recruit Terence Fells-Danzer adjusted just fine. A member of Culpeper's (VA) Cedar Run district champion squad this past season, Fells-Danzer displayed his athleticism in a handful of events - his best being the high jump and 100 meters, respectively. The 6-1 ½, 220-pound star linebacker prospect certainly showed his athleticism, just one thing the UVa staff coveted when recruiting him.

Hargrave Report: Dowling Draws Rave Reviews
Image: Ras-I DowlingRemember Branden Albert? Albert, who was not rated highly coming out of high school, drew rave reviews while from Hargrave Military Academy coaches and turned out to be one of the gems of Virginia's 2005 class. Well, 2006 signee Ras-I Dowling is drawing similar reviews following his first week of practice at Hargrave.

Davis a Five-Star Prospect for '08 Class
Image: Ed DavisIn the recently released Scout.com Top 50 rankings for the 2008 class, Ed Davis was rated a five-star prospect and the No. 4 overall recruit. He is also rated a five-star prospect by Rivals.com, which has him as the No. 8 overall recruit in the 2008 class. We caught up with the star rising junior, who talked about changing to a new school, which programs are his current favorites, and his experience with the Boo Williams AAU squad this summer.

Subject: Scholioe situation for next year; my status update
Posted by: molo83 on Mon Aug 28 2006 7:16:18 AM
Message: Here is a breakdown by position of returning players, assuming no attrition, all RS JRs return, and some but not all walk-ons retain a scholie. Current Juniors who will not have eligibility remaining after next season are marked with an asterisk, so we can see who will be around when this year's recruits are RS FR/SO expected to take on more significant roles. Verbals also listed.

A. Offense (30-33 returning schole players, depending on Robb, Williams and Zidenberg as scholie players in 07) [7 recruits for next class] :

(1) OL: Albert, Ausberry*, Barker, Cabbell, IYC*, Lipsey*, Monroe, Robb (?)*, Shields, Slebonick, Stair. 11 back next season, although Robb's situation is a little difficult to predict. I put Shields here rather than TE spot. By the time this year's recruits rwach RS FR/SO campaign only 7 would remain. So far, we have Cuffee and Hallick as new recruits. Would like to see at least one more OL in this class, better to have 2.

The Cavaliers look set at tight end with Jonathan Stupar and company back next season.

(2) TE: Phillips, Santi, Stupar, Torchia. With Devlin and Ambrose, no more spots here.

(3) WR: Byers*, Covington, Dalton, Davis*, Koch, Ogletree, Pearman, and maybe a RS SR year for Williams*. Minnifield already part of next class. Likely spot for one more.

(4) RB: Horne, Payne, Peerman, Simpson. Milien already in. No more here I don't think.

(5) FB: Bradley*, Zidenberg*. Likely to get filled out of recruited walk-on role?

(6) QB: Deke, McCabe*, Sewell, Verica. Vic maybe switches back. Lalich already in. Done here.

B. Defense (33-35 scholie players returning, depending on a couple of walk-ons status next year):

DL: Billyk*, Carter*, Collins, Crawford, Field, Fitz, Gottschalk, Long* . Jenkins and Mihota (maybe OL for him?). At least one more here, maybe 2.

LB: Appleby, Bivens, Burrell, Carter, Childs, Clark, Copper, Dias*, Dolce, Fuller, Hall, Jackson, Richardson*, Sintim. 14 back, only 2 of which aren't back following year. Detrick, Fells-Danzer, Sewell, Taliaferro already verbals. No more here.

DB: Bell, Best*, Brown, Cook, Glaspy, Gorham*, Hall, Jackson*, Lemhuius, Lyles*, Parker, Woods, Womack. 13 back, and 2-3 already verballed with Joseph, Williams, and Dowling. No more here.

C. Kickers (2): K: Gould* P: Weigand* No more here I don't think.

So, with a verbal list of 16, and 65-70 returning scholie players, I look for us to verbal 4 more: one or two OL, one WR, and one or two DL.

Comments, and I'm sure, corrections?

Check Out the Pitt Football Game at the JPJ!

UVa fans can catch the Pitt game at the John Paul Jones Arena on Saturday.

Virginia football fans will have the opportunity to watch the ESPNU television broadcast of the Cavaliers' season-opening game at Pittsburgh live at John Paul Jones Arena, the Virginia athletics department announced this past week. The Cavaliers' season-opening football game is being televised by ESPNU, which is not readily available on area cable packages so the school decided to help the fan base find a place to watch the game.

The free watch party will utilize the video boards and audio system in the new on-campus arena. The game, scheduled for Saturday, September 2, will kickoff at 7 p.m. Parking will be free for the event. UVa students will be admitted to the building at 5:30 p.m. with a valid student ID. The main lobby entrance will open at 6 p.m. to the general public.

"There is a great sense of anticipation for college football and our team's opening game against Pittsburgh," said Jon Oliver, Executive Associate Director of Athletics. "This is going to be a fantastic way for our fans, who are not traveling to the game, to come together and cheer on the team. It is one more example of how the John Paul Jones Arena is serving the community."

Deng enjoys UVa visit
By Chris Horne

Last weekend was an important one for the Virginia Basketball program, as Coach Gillen and company hosted the Rivals.com number two-ranked basketball player in the country in Blair Academy's (NJ) Luol Deng. This was the first of four visits for Deng, a 6-8, 217-pound small forward. The visit went especially well, according to Blair Academy Head Coach Joe Mantegna.

"The visit went great," said Mantegna. "He was very impressed, and had a terrific time. He liked the people and the basketball program.

"Academically, it is a perfect fit."

Deng will officially visit Missouri this weekend, Duke on October 26, and Indiana in December. Many felt the Cavaliers would have to make a great impression on Deng to have any shot at landing the silky smooth forward. It looks like the staff may have done just that.

"The visit surpassed all expectations," said Mantegna. "UVa is definitely in the mix, and will be there until the final decision. They definitely made an impression."

Luol Deng has all the tools and is one of the most versatile players in the country. He will see some action at point guard this season for Blair Academy in addition to his regular small forward responsibilities. Deng has an excellent basketball IQ and the work ethic to match, and that's just a few of the reasons he has become the country's hottest commodity.

In Case You Missed It ...

Sabre articles from the past week

10-Day Hoo Preview: October Schedule Breakdown
Image: Virginia CavaliersAfter an opening month that features three road games, the Virginia football team treats its fans to three Scott Stadium showdowns in October. Of course, the month starts off with a trip to East Carolina, the third consecutive road game in the schedule. If the Cavaliers can gain and sustain momentum through the ECU game, however, October could be a season-building month.

10-Day Hoo Preview: September Schedule Breakdown
For the third time in three years, the Cavaliers will face the top three ACC teams from the previous season. Virginia's out-of-conference slate includes an interesting mix of teams, including a season-opening visit to Big East foe Pittsburgh. Today, we look at the five-game September schedule, which includes the road test at Pittsburgh in one week. The month closes with a pair of ACC road games.

Best Seat ACC Preview 3-Pack: VT, UNC, Duke
Jed Williams continued with some ACC football previews on The Best Seat in the House on Charlottesville's WINA 1070 AM. This 3-pack features three of the Cavaliers' Coastal Division foes. Virginia Tech's Frank Beamer, North Carolina's John Bunting, and Duke's Ted Roof talk about their fall practices and the upcoming season.

Soccer Teams Open With Wins
A hazy night at Klockner Stadium didn't cloud a pair of season-opening wins for the Virginia soccer teams. The No. 3 men's team dispatched a resolute Davidson club in the evening contest, 1-0, which followed a decisive 6-0 victory for the No. 7 women against Syracuse.

Men's Soccer Team Has Talent, Experience, Lofty Goals
The Virginia men's soccer team is loaded. There is no way around it - the Cavaliers' roster is literally overflowing with talent. In fact, UVa coach George Gelnovatch says "it is among the most talented teams since I've been the coach here." That, of course, means the expectations are high for the Hoos, who open their season with the Virginia Soccer Classic tonight.

Women's Soccer Aiming High
When the Virginia women's soccer team opens play today with its first ever meeting against Syracuse, it will be akin to firing a gun that doesn't have all the bullets. But despite some missing components, the Cavaliers are still aiming squarely at their long-range target - the National Championship bull's eye.

10-Day Hoo Preview: Position Outlook, Secondary
Image: Nate LylesThe secondary started to gel last season with four consecutive solid outings against FSU, UNC, Temple, and Georgia Tech but had troubles after losing Tony Franklin to suspension and Nate Lyles to injury. Even with the loss of Lyles and Franklin, the relative youth and inexperience, and a non-existent pass rush, the 6.7 yards per attempt given up in 2005 was the lowest number in Al Groh's five seasons. Can the Cavaliers raise their game even more in 2006?

10-Day Hoo Preview: Hamilton Lives Up To Hype
Image: Marcus HamiltonMarcus Hamilton came to Virginia amidst a lot of hype. Part of Virginia's best recruiting class ever, Hamilton was given five stars by Max Emfinger and Rivals.com ranked the Centreville native as the nation's 11th-best cornerback. He redshirted as a freshman, in large part due to an injury, and was a reserve defensive back in 2003. From there, Hamilton has steadily developed into of the ACC's best corners.

10-Day Hoo Preview: System Outlook, Pass Defense
Image: Tony FranklinIt is very difficult to separate a defense into "run" and "pass" defense because the two are so co-dependant. Many horrible pass defenses have been propped up statistics-wise because the run defense was so porous that no opponent ever threw the ball and vice versa. Many people are anticipating UVa to show drastic improvement in 2006 is against the pass. Will Tony Franklin and his secondary cohorts deliver?

10-Day Hoo Preview: Position Outlook, Defensive Line
Image: Chris LongIn Al Groh's 3-4 defensive system, the 3 part of the equation - the defensive line - needs to be an active group of players that can absorb and occupy blocks to allow the 4 part of the equation - the linebackers - to lead the charge. If the linemen can also shed those blockers and make plays, then that's a welcomed bonus. Can Chris Long lead an otherwise inexperienced and unproven group to success this season?

Best Seat in the House: Byron Glaspy
Image: Byron GlaspyVirginia safety Byron Glaspy joined the football team during spring practice in 2005 as a walk-on out of the engineering school. By the end of the 2005 season, Glaspy had joined the starting line-up for the Hoos after attrition took its toll in the secondary. The sophomore joined Jed Williams on The Best Seat in the House where they talked about the journey from walk-on to playing time, wearing an Orange jersey this fall, and the upcoming season.

10-Day Hoo Preview: System Outlook, Run Defense
Image: Mike LondonThe offseason return of defensive coordinator Mike London has created some excitement for the Virginia football program, and not only through London's immediate impact on recruiting. The talk has been of a defense that changes fronts, attacks more, and plays with increased aggressiveness. Of course, being successful defensively all starts with shutting down the run and forcing the opponent to be one-dimensional. How will the Hoos accomplish this goal?

Best Seat ACC Preview 3-Pack: BC, Wake, & Maryland
Football season is days away and the entire ACC has been hard at work in preparation for the upcoming year. Jed Williams entertained several ACC players and coaches on The Best Seat in the House in order to get ready for kickoff. Check out interviews with Maryland quarterback Sam Hollenbach, Boston College coach Tom O'Brien, and Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe in this audio 3-pack and stay tuned to the EDGE for more ACC previews.

10-Day Hoo Preview: System Outlook, Running Game
Image: Coach Dave BorbleyOne thing is certain about Al Groh - he likes tough, hard-nosed individuals on his football team. That's why he likes linebackers and tight ends and running the football; there's nothing like going mano-a-mano in the trenches in a battle for yards. But what can Groh and new running game coordinator Dave Borbely expect from the rushing attack in 2006? The Sabre takes a look as part of its 10-Day Hoo Preview.

10-Day Hoo Preview: Position Outlook, Running Backs
Image: Jason SnellingAl Groh has always built his offensive backfield around players with a diverse set of skills. 2006 is no exception. This versatility allows the coaching staff to align the offense in an uncommon amount of sets and creates huge mismatches for opposing defenses. Can this year's group led by Jason Snelling and Cedric Peerman produce big-time numbers for the Hoos?

10-Day Hoo Preview: Position Outlook, Quarterbacks
Image: Christian OlsenOver the years, Virginia has had several successful quarterbacks lead the team through the ACC battlefields. Recently, Matt Schaub and Marques Hagans took the snaps for long strings of starts before moving on to professional football in the NFL. This season, however, the Cavaliers face a different challenge with a one-year starter under center in senior Christian Olsen. Can Olsen lead the Hoos to another bowl game? Will any of the reserve QBs see playing time? The Sabre takes a look at the quarterbacks in this position outlook.

Best Seat in the House 2-Pack: Olsen, Billyk
Image: Allen BillykTwo players will be new starters near center this season for the Virginia football team. Christian Olsen is set to start at quarterback, while Allen Billyk is lined up at nose tackle. Jed Williams caught up with both players recently on The Best Seat in the House to talk about the upcoming season.

10-Day Hoo Preview: Position Outlook, Receivers & Tight Ends
Image: Emmanuel ByersSince the departure of Billy McMullen, Virginia's wide receivers have rarely been classified as a strength on offense. With a solid if not spectacular performance last season, the group entered fall camp as one of the key elements of the Virginia offense for 2006. The loss of Deyon Williams to a stress fracture has dampened some of the enthusiasm, but this is still one of the most talented and deepest components of the Hoo offense. Can Emmanuel Byers and company produce this season?

10-Day Hoo Preview: System Outlook, The Passing Game
Image: Christian OlsenThe Sabre.com continues its 10-Day Hoo Preview with a look at the passing game. What can the Cavaliers expect from Al Groh's modified West Coast system? Will the running backs be involved more this year? Can Christian Olsen make the throws necessary to succeed? In this system outlook, the Sabre examines what to expect out of the passing game this year. Make sure to stay tuned to the Edge from Sunday, Aug. 20 through Tuesday, Aug. 29 to get ready for kickoff with the 10-Day Hoo Preview.

10-Day Hoo Preview: Next In TE Line - John Phillips
Image: John PhillipsIt seems only natural to compare sophomore tight end John Phillips to former Virginia star Heath Miller. Both hail from small towns in the western half of the Virginia and neither received much attention from college recruiters. Both were three-sport standouts in high school. Both are quiet, reserved individuals who are country boys are heart but, when it comes to football, each carries himself in a professional manner.

10-Day Hoo Preview: Position Outlook, Special Teams
Image: Spring Game PhotosThe Virginia football team, for the most part, is very successful and very efficient on special teams. Sure UVa practices kicking and punting a lot, but there is another reason the Hoos produce in this phase - the personnel on the various units. Many of the Cavaliers' most talented players, like Vic Hall for example, are also first string on special teams.

10-Day Hoo Preview: True Freshmen Excited
Image: Nate CollinsWhile there was disappointment over the number of 2006 class members who actually enrolled at Virginia, the ones in football training camp are very excited to finally be Cavaliers. TheSabre.com was able to catch up with this year's newcomers, including Nate Collins (who Al Groh said was the true freshman most likely to play in the opener) during last week's Meet the Team Day event and get their thoughts on training camp, college, goals for the season, and an assortment of other topics.
