Check Out the Pitt Football Game at the JPJ! Virginia football fans will have the opportunity to watch the ESPNU television broadcast of the Cavaliers' season-opening game at Pittsburgh live at John Paul Jones Arena, the Virginia athletics department announced this past week. The Cavaliers' season-opening football game is being televised by ESPNU, which is not readily available on area cable packages so the school decided to help the fan base find a place to watch the game. The free watch party will utilize the video boards and audio system in the new on-campus arena. The game, scheduled for Saturday, September 2, will kickoff at 7 p.m. Parking will be free for the event. UVa students will be admitted to the building at 5:30 p.m. with a valid student ID. The main lobby entrance will open at 6 p.m. to the general public. "There is a great sense of anticipation for college football and our team's opening game against Pittsburgh," said Jon Oliver, Executive Associate Director of Athletics. "This is going to be a fantastic way for our fans, who are not traveling to the game, to come together and cheer on the team. It is one more example of how the John Paul Jones Arena is serving the community."

This Week In Recruiting By Chris Horne Basketball recruiting takes forefront .
A 4-star prospect, Jones, who is a natural two but could play the one position if necessary, averaged 21 points per game last season as a junior. His commitment is huge, as UVa is losing standout two-guard J.R. Reynolds after this season. Having an opportunity to replace Reynolds was a factor in Jones' decision (check out Friday's EDGE article below). Jones is the third player to commit for UVa's 2007 class, joining 3-star point guard Sam Zeglinski and 4-star small forward Eric Wallace.
UVa does not currently project to have any more scholarships available for the 2007 class, but the staff is recruiting for one more player. The position of need/want is power forward/center and the staff is hosting top power forward Alexis Wangmene on an unofficial visit. Wangmene, who is transferring to Blair Academy in New Jersey for his senior season, is a 6-8, 235-pound power forward recruit. Stay tuned for more on Wangmene following his visit.
Football recruiting . Salesianum (Wilmington, DE) tight end recruit Andrew Szczerba chose Penn State over UVa. The staff wanted Szczerba, a 6-6, 255-pound prospect who would have been an excellent addition, but the addition of Mount Lebanon (Pittsburgh, PA) TE Andrew Devlin certainly softens the loss quite a bit. Also, UVa hosted Mitchell Schwartz this past weekend on an unofficial visit. Schwartz is a 6-5, 305-pound offensive line recruit out of Pacific Palisades, California. The 3-star standout holds offers from Michigan and Oregon (where his brother plays), as well. Stay tuned for more on his UVa experience.

Post of the Week
Posted by: TheGrinch on Mon Aug 21 2006 9:08:03 AM Message: Thinking that press-breaking is all on the point guard is a common misconception, but truly effective press-breaking is probably more dependent on ability of the other four players. If it's a straight up man press, then the pg is important, but having some ball handling options at the other guard spots will help. Having only two competent ball handlers on the floor at any one time last season hurt us more against this type of press than the individual abilities of any of our point guards. From Harris, Tat, and hopefully an improved Diane, we should have three players on the floor who can handle the ball at any point ... even if SS or JR is on the bench. Good passers are also effective in breaking this type of press, and we should have more effective passers on the floor this year. Against a trapping-style press (which is usually what people mean when they say "press"), passing is more important than dribbling. Dribbling through this type of press is the least effective method of breaking it. You punish the trap-press with the pass, so you need a few other good passing players for the doubled player to pass to and send it on. Last year, we tended to dribble through the press, which lets the pressing team recover defensively. Throwing over it prevents the trapping players from getting back to the ball and should yield an easy basket on the other end. Losing TJ hurts against the press because we lose a player who could handle and pass, and we didn't have many of those last year. This year, we should have more, so we won't miss him as much as last year's team would have missed him. Breaking the press is the least of my worries for this season ... effective and consistent play is a much bigger concern.
Bannister Decides to Transfer
Bannister, in an interview with Jeff White of The Richmond Times-Dispatch, said it was just time for a fresh start. "When it's time to move on, you got to move on," Bannister said in the RTD. "I feel it was time to do that and get a fresh start and show everybody what I can do." Bannister, a guard from Jacksonville, Fla., played in only 16 games for the Cavaliers during the 2005-06 season because of surgery to repair a sports hernia last September. He never fully recovered from the injury/surgery and averaged 2.1 points, 2.3 assists, 1.3 rebounds and 13.0 minutes played a game last season as a junior. Bannister played in 76 games during his three years in the Virginia program and started 21. He averaged 3.6 points, 3.1 assists, 1.5 rebounds and 18.7 minutes played a game, and made 77.1 percent (128-166) of his free throw attempts for his UVa career. "I want to give it a chance to heal up and work on my game at the same time," Bannister told the RTD, "so I think a year off will probably be the best thing for me."

Issue No. 195 - June 24, 2005 Virginia added two more players this week - one to the 2005 class and the other for 2006. Pasadena City College (Pasadena, CA) punter Ryan Weigand became the 24th member of UVa's 2005 recruiting class. In search of another punter, the Cavs scoured the nation this spring until they found Weigand, a 6-1 1/2, 175-pound prospect who averaged 40.3 yards per punt last season. Weigand, who had originally committed to Tulsa but did not sign any scholarship papers, visited Virginia last week and decided to go with the Wahoos. Here is an excerpt from the Q&A session we had with Ryan earlier this week.
TheSabre.com: What do the Virginia coaches like the most about you? Weigand had qualified academically coming out of high school, which means he'll be able to transfer to UVa and have immediate eligibility. He only played one year for PCC, so he'll have three years of eligibility remaining.
