This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Last Friday, UVa landed a verbal commitment from one of the top defensive tackle prospects in the east in Nick Jenkins. Jenkins, a 6-3, 285-pound prospect out of Good Counsel (Wheaton, MD), committed to the Hoos over offers from 30 other Division 1A programs including Florida, Maryland, N.C. State and Penn State.

Rated a 4-star prospect by Rivals.com and Scout.com, Jenkins tallied 76 tackles, five quarterback hurries, and two sacks last season as a junior. He will be a 4-year starter for head coach Bob Milloy.

"He's the best tackle I've ever had in all my years of coaching," Milloy said of Jenkins. "He's an avid weight-lifter and he works out five days a week. He really wants it. He's a good leader, role model, and the whole bit. We're fortunate to have him."

Jenkins, who committed to UVa while on an unofficial visit late last week (his second this year), gives Virginia an outstanding nose guard prospect. He combines excellent size, strength and ability to play the position. He will join former Orange High School standout Asa Chapman - who is expected to attend Fork Union this year - as defensive tackles in the 2007 recruiting class.

As for other defensive tackle prospects, UVa made the top 10 for Ballou (Washington, D.C.) 5-star prospect Marvin Austin. Austin reportedly will cut his list in August, so stay tuned next month to see if UVa can continue to hang around.

J'Courtney Williams

Virginia now has 11 new verbal commitments in the 2007 recruiting class. The position make-up looks like this: 1 QB, 1 RB, 1 WR, 1 TE, 1 OL, 1 DT, 4 LB (counting J'Courtney Williams, who is also being recruited as a safety) and 1 CB. Rivals.com has five UVa commitments rated as 4-star prospects - QB Peter Lalich, WR Chase Minnifield, DT Nick Jenkins, LB Terence Fells-Danzer, and S/LB J'Courtney Williams.

Scout.com rates one of UVa's commitments - S/LB J'Courtney Williams - as a 5-star prospect. Three others - QB Peter Lalich, WR Chase Minnifield and DT Nick Jenkins - are rated 4-star prospects.

In terms of in-state ranking, UVa has landed the No. 2 (Lalich), No. 4 (Williams) and No. 5 (Fells-Danzer) ranked players in TheSabre.com's Top 30.

Look for UVa add around 20 new players in total with this year's recruiting class.

West Springfield quarterback Peter Lalich has been selected to the Elite 11 Quarterback Camp/Competition. The event, which is only for the top 11 quarterback prospects in the country as selected by Student Sports, takes place in Southern California from July 24-27. Lalich's selection gives the state of Virginia two participants, as Hampton quarterback Tyrod Taylor has also been selected.

Three Virginia targets committed elsewhere late last week and into this week. They include Spring Valley (Columbia, S.C.) TE/OL Mason Cloy (Clemson), Clover Hill OL Blake DeChristopher (Virginia Tech), and Stone Bridge OL Andrew Nuss (Notre Dame).

Post of the Week

Can't wait for football season? Pezhoo's offseason posts have been a good substitute as he tries to win the National Championship, video game style. Here's the latest:

Subject: Wahoo Dynasty - Year 4 - Game 2
Posted by: Pezhoo on Thu Jul 6 2006 5:40:48 PM
Message: # 3 Virginia at #70 Wisconsin: This was pretty much a demolition, UVa ran all over the Badgers, I loved it. UW was running an option offense but for the most part my linebackers were able to keep them under control. They did manage to knock the Badger QB out for a series or two early on. The halftime score was 21-6 and the final was 45-13.

Post-game Press Conference:

Coach Fish: Hi everyone. We were really looking forward to this game against a tough program from the Big-10 in a hostile atmosphere. We were able to take their crowd out of it pretty early and dominate the line of scrimmage. Greg Hollins was nearly unstoppable today, we rode him to the win. Obviously Johnnie Allen gives us a great weapon on the option, he's supercharged our running game.

The video game version of Marshall Ausberry made a big block for Pezhoo in Game 2.

Reporter: You mentioned the running game, your 298 yards today is clearly a program high in your tenure. Did you think you could move the ball that consistently coming in?

Fish: Well, we've got experience, size and depth at most positions now and runners who can find a hole and have the speed to exploit it. That TD run in the third quarter was a good example, Reggie Price and Marshal Ausberry got to the corner and sealed it off, then Hollins turned on the jets and scored from 14 yards out. It was a pretty exciting play, from a head coach standpoint.

Reporter: And Jonathan Stupar continued his stellar play.

Fish: Yes, another 3 catches downfield and a touchdown. We're hoping he'll be a finalist for the Mackey award this year, our passing offense is run through the tight end this year.

Reporter: You might not know but LSU lost and Iowa is trailing, there's a good chance that Virginia will be the number one team in the nation next week. Can you comment on that?

Fish: Well, you don't get an award for being number one in mid-September but if it happens it'll be only the second time in school history that it's happened. It will be nice for the fans to talk about anyway.

Reporter: You've got a tough NC State program visiting Charlottesville next week, last year's game was a 31-29 barnburner that more than 800 yards of offense. Do you think this year's game will compare?

Fish: I know they have a very good defensive line again this year so I'm concerned about how we'll be able to move the ball. I'm pretty sure our defense won't give up 29 points again. They passed us silly last year, this year we're putting a lot of pressure on the QB with our D-line as opposed to blitzing, that's giving us more flexibility. We haven't gotten the interceptions just yet but I think they'll come. Once they do I think you'll see some exciting stuff with the speed we've got on defense.

Thanks for your time.

Post of the Week

Subject: This about sums up Wilk Hall
Posted by: wahooforlife on Mon Sep 6 2004 2:44:05 PM
Message: The Ten Commandments of Tailgating

1. Thou shalt not be a cheapskate. It is considered poor taste for a person shopping for a tailgate to mention the word budget. If a budget must be followed, do so in a reticent manner. Even if one is on a strict budget, however, it is acceptable to buy expensive brands of labeled alcoholic beverages because, after all, these are for friends that deserve the best.

2. Thou shalt not diet. Diets are to be forgotten on game day. Green pasta, guacamole and pistachio ice cream are considered greens by real tailgaters for the sake of a diet.

3. Thou shalt have plenty. Never run out of food or drink. It is far better to have too much than too little. Besides, think of all those great leftovers.

4. Thou shalt not arrive at the last minute. Never rush. Always arrive early. You are, however, permitted to rush your spouse and family if they are preventing you from being early.

Tailgaiting Rule No. 5:
Do Not Question the Chef.

5. Thou shalt always park in the same place. - Where security is either lax, or discreet. Thy tailgate party shall only have one chef. The chef is right. Always right! If you question the chef, you question the almighty. The chef doesn't eat, drink, he/she tastes. All chef decisions are final, unless he/she changes his/her mind.

6. Thou shalt not talk politics. Politics are to be avoided at a tailgate party. If a guest insists on talking politics, animal rights or gun control, you are permitted to demonstrate a reason for gun control.

7. Thou shalt not resist progress. It is the duty of all tailgaters to constantly upgrade and improve their tailgate parties. If there are new gadgets to be bought or made, tailgaters must buy or make them.

8. Thou shalt not make others tailgate. Since some guests to a tailgate party are not as excited about tailgating as you are, they must be allowed to stay in your vehicle during blizzards or rainstorms. Do not, however, deliver food to them. Make them come outside to get it.

9. Thou shalt not snub the women who choose to dress up. Upon first impression they may appear too fragile for football. But it is likely they were born with pompoms in hand, can call a penalty as well as any ref (or better in the SEC), and can drink you under the table. Besides, you'll LOVE them later when they produce flasks of Crown from beneath those tiny little skirts.

10. Thou shalt not depart the parking lot until traffic clears. It is much better to tailgate for an hour or two than to sit in traffic with idiots. Relax and enjoy the sunset.
