Men's Tennis Clinches Commonwealth Challenge For UVa

The Virginia men's tennis team wrapped up the Commonwealth Challenge trophy for the Cavaliers as they defeated in-state rival Virginia Tech on Wednesday. UVa won the match in Blacksburg, 4-3.

UVa leads the competition, which involves all teams in the two schools' athletics programs with a points system determining the annual winner, by an 12-6 score currently. There are only four points remaining so the overall title has been clinched by the Hoos. A trophy featuring a combination of the red brick prevalent at the University of Virginia and the limestone at Virginia Tech goes to Virginia this year. The trophy will be presented at the Commonwealth Day football game between the two schools this fall. There are also traveling plaques for the winning team in each sport.

With the win over the Hokies, the Virginia men's tennis team has won four straight matches. The Cavs are 11-5 and 2-0 in the ACC. No. 11 Virginia returns home for the first time in a month with a pair of conference matches this weekend. The Hoos host Wake Forest today at 3 p.m. at the Synder Tennis Center. They also welcome N.C. State to town on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Basketball recruiting . West Side (Gary, IN) couldn't overcome the loss of key players from last year's squad to have the year it wanted, but Virginia bound Jamil Tucker played well in what was his senior season. The 6-9, 210-pound forward averaged 22 points, 10 rebounds and three assists per game for West Side.

"He had an outstanding year as an individual player but, as far as the team goes, I think he was a little bit disappointed," West Side head coach John Boyd said.

According to Ford, Tucker will likely be a power forward for Virginia next season. Known for his outside shooting touch, Tucker is a versatile player who should bring an array of skills to the UVa team in 2006. Ball-handling will be one asset, as Tucker played the point guard position at times throughout his high school career.

Tucker has already met qualification standards, so he is now just preparing to get to the University of Virginia. Stay tuned for an EDGE update on the talented big man over the weekend.

Football recruiting. Virginia is off and running in 2007 class recruiting, as the staff has already landed three verbal commitments. The latest one came last weekend, when 6-1, 200-pound Yorktown (Arlington, VA) running back Max Milien pledged to the Cavs over heavy interest from Virginia Tech and Maryland, among others.

Milien, who is the second prospect from the state of Virginia to commit to UVa, rushed for 1,067 yards on 140 carries (7.6 yards-per-carry average) and scored 12 touchdowns. He added 26 catches for 414 yards and nine scores.

While other programs were recruiting Milien more as an athlete, the Virginia staff is recruiting him to play running back. This was a factor in his decision according to Yorktown head coach Bruce Hanson, who praised the UVa staff for the job they did in recruiting his star.

EDGE subscribers can check out junior year video clips of Milien on his EDGE recruiting card.

Other recruiting videos added to the database this week include Manchester (Midlothian, VA) OL Khalil Latif and Patrick Henry (Ashland, VA) ATH D.J. Thomas. UVa has offered Latif and is showing interest in Thomas, who holds an offer from Virginia Tech.

UVa Lacrosse & Baseball Announce Special Ticket Offer

Kip Turner and the No. 1 men's lacrosse team host Johns Hopkins on Saturday.

The University of Virginia athletics department is offering a special doubleheader rate for fans attending Saturday's lacrosse and baseball games at UVa. Fans can use their ticket stub from Saturday's 1 p.m. lacrosse match between top-ranked Virginia and ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins to purchase a general admission ticket for the Cavaliers' 5 p.m. baseball game against Wake Forest for just $2.

Regular admission to either event is $6 for adults and $4 for youth and seniors. The lacrosse match will take place at Klöckner Stadium and the baseball game is scheduled for Davenport Field.

Due to anticipated large crowds for both events, fans should be aware of three parking options. The University Hall and McCue Center lots will open at 8 a.m. After 12 p.m. the Emmett/Ivy garage will be available for parking. There is no charge to park in any of the three lots.

Own a Piece of History

The Last Ball in U-Hall concluded the Cavaliers' regular-season run in University Hall this past weekend, a disappointing 71-70 loss. Still, many of Virginia's all-time greats and legendary players returned for a day-long celebration that brought chills for many, tears for others, and smiles for all.

Now you can relive that Sunday afternoon and all the good times in University Hall with a special offer from the Virginia Athletics Foundation. The VAF is offering a commemorative plaque with a piece of hardwood from the U-Hall floor that was used from the 1978 - 1997 seasons.

For information on how to order the plaque (which would make a great gift for a birthday, Father's Day, Christmas), check out this VAF information.

Thread of the Week

Subject: Spring game contrast
Posted by: KCHoo on Wed Mar 22 2006 2:20:43 PM
Message: something that Prince didn't take with him from Groh. They are expecting over 30,000. This is something Prince has done -- it was nowhere near as big under the previous regime.

Subject: Never understood why this is such a big deal to some people.
Posted by: 1995hoo on Fri Mar 24 2006 7:00:40 AM
Message: I'd like to believe that many UVA fans have higher priorities than driving two hours to watch practice. I don't mean that as a slam on people who go to the spring "game"-if one enjoys going, then by all means one should go, and certainly Wilk Hall always puts on a good showing. My point is just that there are some people on the Sabre who act like UVA people are not proper fans because they don't want to drive down from NOVA, or up from Tidewater, fighting the traffic and the rest, to watch what is essentially just practice. I disagree with anyone who feels that way.

Subject: That's what they do at football schools
Posted by: HiltonHeadHoo on Wed Mar 22 2006 9:18:22 PM
Message: 70k will turn out to watch Nebraska get coached by a local music teacher.

Subject: Re: If we played VT on the same Friday and had a lottery for free tickets, there
Posted by: LTHoo on Wed Mar 22 2006 4:59:03 PM
Message: would 500,000 requests because everyone would view it as a high priority event and schedule around it. The UVa spring game isn't a high priority regardless of when it is played, hence is it not well attended. Any potential conflict or inconvenience represents a valid reason for not attending. I am not criticizing anyone, I am just being realistic.

Subject: I have issue with the date and time because it makes it tough if not
Posted by: mwolve on Wed Mar 22 2006 4:26:05 PM
Message: impossible to get there from the 757 unless you take time off. That doesn't account for getting players up there, though it is possible depending on when they can leave school. I know that I'm in the minority, but I'd be willing to pay $5 for the Spring Game if it was played when I could make it.

Sabre articles from the past week

Hagans, Lundy Hoping for Draft Success
Image: Wali LundyMarques Hagans and Wali Lundy shared four years on the Virginia football field and in that time, they were among the most productive Cavaliers to ever don the Orange and Blue. 11,136 yards. 54 rushing touchdowns. 9 receiving touchdowns. 29 passing touchdowns. 1 touchdown return. 32 wins. The two Cavaliers hope that all that production earns them a spot on an NFL roster.

Best Seat in the House: D'Brickashaw Ferguson
D'Brickashaw Ferguson has quickly become a hot topic around the country as the NFL Draft, where he is expected to be a top 10 pick in April, approaches. Ferguson sat down to talk about the upcoming draft and more on the Best Seat in the House with Jed Williams. Check out the EDGE audio here.

Around the Horn: Cavaliers Rolling in March
Image: Sean DoolittleThe Cavaliers, winners of five in a row and 11 of the last 13 are coming off a stellar performance over the weekend with a three-game sweep of then second-ranked Clemson. With a win last Sunday over No. 1 Georgia Tech, a 10-3 spanking of Dayton, Virginia now stands at 19-4 overall and 4-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Video: Virginia Pro Day
Image: Brian BarthelmesVirginia's Pro Day on Tuesday featured approximately 25 to 35 scouts that watched several Cavaliers go through workouts. The Sabre has updated video clips for Brian Barthelmes, Marques Hagans, and more. The video includes the 40-yard dash, broad jump, and offensive line drills.

Scouts Flock to Virginia Pro Day
Image: D'Brickashaw FergusonVirginia's annual Pro Day football activities on Tuesday drew high interest from NFL scouts and many Cavaliers - including likely top 5 draft pick D'Brickashaw Ferguson - displayed their skills in a variety of tests. There were assessments of 40 time, bench press reps, vertical leap, broad jump, 'L' drill, and shuttle times. Scouts also worked out individuals.

Making a Case for Redshirting
With spring football practice just days away, Virginia still has plenty of questions to answer before next season. The incoming recruits, of course, are not part of spring practice. That won't matter, according to Rob Mahini, because they all should be redshirted anyway. Check out Rob's case for redshirting - and in turn, rebuilding - in this Edge feature.

No. 2 Clemson Hits Town This Weekend
Last weekend, Brian O'Connor took his Virginia baseball team to Georgia Tech for a three-game series against the No. 1 team in the nation. The Yellow Jackets had not lost prior to Sunday's defeat against UVa. This weekend, UVa welcomes Clemson to town for a three-game series and the competition will be just as fierce when the action starts today at 5 p.m. The Tigers are ranked No. 2 in the nation and have lost just 3 times all season.

Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Smith Making Splash on Recruiting Scene
Kempsville (Virginia Beach, VA) wide receiver prospect Mordecai "Jay" Smith is used to putting in the time and energy to become the best receiver he can be, and it's one of the reasons why his recruiting stock has skyrocketed in 2006. He had a good teacher growing up who instilled a good work ethic and sound football fundamentals.

Devonte Campbell a Top UVa Target
Before his sophomore year at Forestville (MD), Devonte Campbell had never played football. He had been and still is a very good basketball player, but football was and still is something new. Playing football has turned out to be a great move for the 6-3, 230-pound linebacker/tight end recruit, who, after a very good junior season, has drawn scholarship offers from six Division 1A program including one from the University of Virginia.

Milien Becomes Third Commitment!
Over the weekend, UVa landed a verbal commitment from 6-1, 200-pound Yorktown (Arlington, VA) standout running back Max Milien. As a junior last season, Milien had 140 carries for 1,067 yards and 12 touchdowns, averaging 7.6 yards per carry. He added 26 catches for 414 yards and nine scores. He is a versatile player who lines up at tailback and wide receiver for coach Bruce Hanson.
