This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Virginia is off and running in the 2007 football recruiting class as Al Groh and company have received their first verbal commitment. This Wednesday, Woodside (Newport News, VA) inside linebacker prospect Jared Detrick pledged his commitment to the Hoos.

Detrick, a 6-2, 230-pound prospect, has played on the varsity level since his freshman year. His primary positions last season were defensive end and tight end, but he did play some linebacker. He finished the year with more than 60 tackles on defense and had 300 yards receiving on offense.

Detrick chose Virginia, which was the first school to officially offer a scholarship, over interest from Michigan and Tennessee among others. Virginia Tech had just received film as well according to Woodside head coach Danny Dodson. Virginia is led here by primary recruiter and new defensive coordinator Mike London.

For more information on Detrick, check out the Sabre EDGE. We have posted new videos of Jared on his player profile.

Although this Sunday will not be a full blown junior day, a few key prospects are expected in town for the men's basketball game versus Maryland. West Springfield's 6-5, 235-pound quarterback Peter Lalich, who made an unofficial visit to Virginia last weekend as well as for the most recent junior day (for the VT basketball game), plans to be in Charlottesville on Sunday. Lalich will head to Miami today and tomorrow before going to Virginia. Virginia is still considered the leader here.

Gloucester outside linebacker recruit Aaron Taliaferro plans to be in attendance as well. According to head coach Tommy Reamon, Taliaferro holds offers from Maryland, Virginia and Virginia Tech. Clemson is a school showing more interest as of late. At this point, UVa leads for Taliaferro.

From what we have been able to confirm, UVa has offered the following in-state prospects in the 2007 football recruiting class.

  • West Springfield QB Peter Lalich
  • Hampton QB Tyrod Taylor
  • Yorktown RB Max Milien
  • Hylton OL William Alvarez
  • Manchester OL Khalil Latif
  • Stone Bridge OL Andrew Nuss
  • Matoaca WR Kris Burd
  • Highland Springs WR/DB Cris Hill
  • Kempsville WR Jay Smith
  • Culpeper LB Terence Fells-Danzer
  • Woodside LB Jared Detrick - UVa commitment
  • Gloucester LB Aaron Taliaferro
  • Christchurch LB J'Courtney Williams
  • Highland Springs CB C.J. Fleming

Subject: Looking at the ACC tournament brackets
Posted by: ATrueWahoo on Fri Mar 3 2006 9:14:44 AM
Message: 3 scenarios:

1. If we beat Maryland Sunday at U-Hall and both Georgia Tech beat Clemson and Virginia Tech lose to BC, then we play Virginia Tech in the 1st round of the ACC tournament Thursday Night at 9:00. A win here would most likely mean another date with the BC Eagles.

2. If we beat Maryland and GT lost and VT wins, then we play Georgia Tech.

3. If, we lose to Maryland, we would fall to that 8/9 seed in the ACC (Dukes part of the bracket) So to summerize my post, Sunday's games against Maryland is a must win game to still have any chance at making it to the Big Dance.

A win against Maryland in the season finale and 2 ACC victories vs VT/BC gets us into the big dance. I gave you the scenarios, now let's sit back and see what kind of team we have in Charlottesville.

Sabre articles from the past week

Majik Man Helped Start Virginia's Climb
Image: Don MajkowskiWhen Don Majkowski arrived at the University of Virginia, he was a talented young player from Western New York who had just finished a year of post-graduate work at Fork Union Military Academy. When he left, he was Majik, the school's all-time passing leader and the quarterback who led the Cavaliers to the first bowl game in school history. Now, 10 years after his retirement from pro football, Majkowski is managing his budding analyst career.

Tar Heels Trample Cavaliers
Image: J.R. ReynoldsIn Virginia's game at North Carolina on Wednesday night, junior guard J.R. Reynolds scored his 1,000th career point with a second-half jumper. It was one of precious few positive moments in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels grabbed a double-digit lead early and never looked back en route to a dominant 99-54 victory.

Mikalauskas' Role Vital for Virginia
Image: Lars MikalauskasAs winter winds down in Central Virginia, there's the temptation to complain about the cold weather and about how long the winter season lasts. If you mention it to Virginia's Laurynas Mikalauskas, however, you might get a wide smile and light chuckle out of the freshman. After all in his native Lithuania right now, it is really cold: 5 degrees Fahrenheit cold.

Defense Will Be Critical For Virginia Baseball Again
Image: Mike CampagnaOn the baseball diamond the last two years, much of Virginia's success can be attributed to defense. The Cavaliers back up excellent pitching with strong play in the field, where players like shortstop Mike Campagna make routine plays and record timely outs regularly. Continuing the streak of solid defense will be a critical ingredient for the Cavs again this season.

Young Pitching Could Be Key For Cavaliers
After defeating George Washington 11-5 on Tuesday, coach Brian O'Connor and the Virginia baseball squad have opened 2006 with a 9-2 record. This comes on the heels of the most successful two-year stretch in the history of Cavalier baseball. Under O'Connor's tutelage, Virginia finished second during the 2004 ACC regular season going 44-15 overall and 18-6 in league play. UVa's 44 overall victories that year tied the school-record for most wins and Virginia's 18 ACC victories were the most in school history. Last season, the Cavaliers compiled a 41-20 record and reached the championship game of the ACC Baseball Tournament before competing in the NCAA Tournament for a second consecutive season.

Best Seat in the House Audio Special: Jeff Lamp
Image: Jeff LampJed Williams, the host of Charlottesville's Best Seat in the House radio show, is celebrating the Last Ball in U-Hall with a week-long series of interviews with some of the Cavaliers of years past. Tuesday night, Jed caught up wtih Jeff Lamp and they talked about Lamp's years at Virginia, University Hall, and more.

Last Ball in U-Hall: Ted Jeffries Played Big At Center
Image: Ted JeffriesThe Sabre's "Last Ball in U-Hall" series, which will continue to appear through the opening of the John Paul Jones Arena, rolls on with Ted Jeffries, a fan favorite for his hard work and drive on the floor. Jeffries never led UVa in scoring and was never selected All-ACC while wearing a Cavalier uniform from 1989 to 1993, but but the out-of-position center finished his career with 787 rebounds, good enough for sixth place on the Virginia all-time list.

John Paul Jones Arena Nears Completion
Image: JPJ ArenaWith just one scheduled game remaining in University Hall, the ever-evolving John Paul Jones Arena continues to take shape across the street in Charlottesville. The JPJ's outer shell boasts its Jeffersonian red bricks and white columns, while the interior's daily makeover continues. The completed project, which remains on schedule and on budget as the building surges toward its planned opening in July, is expected to be a special blend of architectural ingenuity and multi-purpose practicality - oh, and one heck of a basketball facility.

Cavalier Women Give Fond Farewell to Home
Image: Sharnee ZollThe old saying "Home is where the heart is" is believed to have first appeared nearly 2,000 years ago. It only took 33 years for the Virginia women's basketball team to appreciate its meaning, however. The Cavaliers said goodbye to University Hall on Saturday with an 83-64 win against Clemson, a halftime tribute, and a post-game ceremony. Everyone from Debbie Ryan to Cathy Grimes to Sharnee Zoll agreed that they would miss their second home. The Cavs are moving to the John Paul Jones Arena next season.

Virginia Women Close U-Hall With Win
Image: Coach Debbie RyanFor 33 years, the Virginia women's basketball team hit the court at University Hall to take on opponents from near and far. Sunday, the final regular-season game in the program's history resulted in one more victory as the Cavaliers dispatched Clemson, 83-64. Takisha Granberry's 18 points led four players in double figures for UVa, which enters this week's ACC Tournament on a four-game winning streak as the No. 9 seed.

Tigers Trounce Cavaliers
In a critical road game at Clemson, Virginia was sluggish on defense, turnover-plagued on offense, and behind on the scoreboard from the opening minute. The Tigers forced 29 turnovers and shot 52 percent from the floor to prevail 90-64. The 90 points are the most allowed by the Cavaliers this season.

Chalktalk: Free Throw Shooting
Image: Mamadi DianeAt almost every professional and college basketball game, one thing usually happens without fail: fans behind the opposing team's basket try feverishly to distract free throw shooters. Tactics range from unending noise, unified motion, and well-timed shouts to jumping up and down, waving arms, and creative posters. Why all the fuss? Free throws can help decide the outcome of games, which just might be the case today when Virginia takes on Clemson.

Photo Gallery: Virginia vs. Boston College
Image: UVa-BC PhotosVirginia picked up ACC win No. 7 by defeating Boston College on Tuesday in University Hall. J.R. Reynolds was red hot and finished with 28 points, while Mamadi Diane, Laurynas Mikalauskas, Tunji Soroye, and Adrian Joseph all played key roles as well. Check out 74 photos from the victory in this Edge Photo Gallery.

Last Ball in U-Hall Bittersweet for Ex-Cavalier Women
Image: University HallAs a Virginia women's basketball fan, you may remember the big games in University Hall. As a former player, everyone who has worn the Virginia blue and orange understands how neat it is that they can be associated with EVERYONE ELSE who has worn the Virginia blue and orange and played in University Hall. That makes the Last Ball in U-Hall a bit bittersweet as the games come to an end.

Best Seat in the House Audio: Barry Parkhill, Part 2
With only one regular season men's basketball game remaining, Jed Williams welcomed Barry Parkhill to the Best Seat in the House to talk about his memories of University Hall and UVa in Part 1 the interview. In part 2 of this Edge Audio feature, Williams and Parkhill discuss the new John Paul Jones Arena and the features of the new building. Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week

EDGE Recruiting Video: Woodside LB Jared Detrick
We have posted junior season video clips of Woodside (Newport News, VA) linebacker prospect and recent Virginia commitment Jared Detrick. The 6-2, 230-pound Detrick, who pledged to the 'Hoos earlier this week, saw time at defensive end, linebacker and tight end last season as a junior.

UVa's First 2007 Commitment: Woodside LB Jared Detrick
The University of Virginia landed its first commitment of the 2007 recruiting class today, as Woodside (Newport News, VA) linebacker prospect Jared Detrick pledged to the 'Hoos. Detrick is an athletic 6-2, 230-pound prospect who will be a four-year starter on the varsity level for head coach Danny Dodson.

Burd, Mills Headline Matoaca's 2007 Class
WR Kris Burd and RB Patrick Mills - both of which earned Richmond Times-Dispatch first-team all-metro honors in 2005 - lead the Matoaca Warriors into 2006. Head coach Pat Manuel is counting on his dynamic rising seniors to help the program achieve even more than it did last season, when it won the Division 5 Group AAA Central Region championship and reached the state semifinals.

2007 Class: Stone Bridge OL Boasts Early Offers
From Stone Bridge's (Ashburn, VA) 12-2 squad last season, head coach Mickey Thompson feels two players could end up on the Division 1A level in the 2007 class. There is offensive/defensive lineman Andrew Nuss, who already has several 1A scholarship offers, and then there is athlete Terence Glenn, who led the offense from the quarterback position and who Thompson calls a "late bloomer." Jeron Gouveia, an impressive 2008 prospect, is another kid to watch next season.

2007 Class: Kempsville Fields Top Talents
Head coach Jeff McGowan boasts at least four potential 1A prospects for the 2007 class (including WR Jay Smith, who has been offered by UVa), and it's one of the reasons why he's so excited about the 2006 season. Kempsville missed out on a playoff berth after losing a coin toss, but the players, led by these four excellent talents, don't plan on leaving their playoff hopes to chance again.

Patrick Henry Star Lands First Offer
Image: D.J. ThomasPatrick Henry (Ashland, VA) star D.J. Thomas picked up his first official scholarship offer last week, when Virginia Tech came in with an official letter. There certainly may be more to come for the 5-9, 168-pound standout athlete, as Maryland and Virginia have been showing interest as well.

2007 Target Profile: Haden has UVa Offer
Joe Haden, who has been the starting quarterback for Friendly High School's (Fort Washington, MD) varsity football squad since his freshman season, led Friendly to a 9-2 overall record this past season and is looking for more in 2006. He also has accumulated a handful of Division 1A scholarship offers, including one from the University of Virginia.

2007 Class: Anson County's Triple Threat
Three Division 1A prospects - ATH Michael Bowman, LB Barquell Rivers and OL Trinton Sturdivant - will lead Anson County (Wadesboro, N.C.) into the 2006 varsity football season. All three players currently hold Division 1A scholarship offers, including one who has close to 20.
