Virginia kicker Kurt Smith joined a growing list of Cavaliers taken in the NFL Draft on Sunday when San Diego selected him with the No. 188 pick overall, which falls in the sixth round. It is somewhat unusual for teams to draft kickers and Smith was just the second kicker selected in the draft.

Smith spent much of his career at Virginia as a kickoff specialist, but he also had a chance to boot some field goals back in 2002. For his placekicking career at UVa, he made 7 of 12 field goals and 22 of 24 PATs. On kickoffs, Smith had a booming leg that resulted in 119 touchbakcs on 290 career kicks (41 percent). In addition, 190 of 290 kicks reached the end zone (65.5 percent) and teams averaged just 21.4 yards per return against him. Smith held teams to an average start of the 22-yard line in his career.
