Wahoo fans and Sabre junkies, I'm delighted to announce that this will be my last edition of SabreMail. Starting Jan. 1, Kris Wright will take over as TheSabre.com's editor, so he gets to put together this nutty newsletter every week. Have fun, Kris!

But while I may not miss SabreMail (or customer service, or monitoring the message boards, or, well, you get the idea), I'll certainly miss this job. If you didn't see the announcement of my impending departure and the hiring of Kris Wright, you can read it here.

In my 20 months as editor, I enjoyed helping create the content you read on the site. But the most rewarding part of the job was becoming part of the Sabre community, which is like a big, dysfunctional family - but a wonderful one. I was touched by all of your emails and posts this week. Many of you thanked me for my contributions to the site, but let me thank all of you for letting me serve in this role for nearly two years.

It's been a pleasure and an honor to be the Sabre's first editor, and it will be exciting to see the site grow and improve in the coming years. So though my role will change, I'll remain part of our community - writing, posting, lurking - unless Kris kicks me out for a terms of service violation.

John Galinsky
Editor (for two more days!)

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Football recruiting.

Not much has happened recruiting-wise over the past week. The recruiting "dead period" lasts until January 1st. Then, coaches may resume in-home visits and recruits can resume making official visits. Another "dead period" comes on the dates of January 9th-12th and January 30th-February 2nd. February 1st is the National Signing Day.

Virginia's next big recruiting weekend appears to be January 20th. Prospects scheduled to officially visit UVa on that weekend include Robinson (Fairfax, VA) 3-star athlete Lucas Caparelli, Lee County (Sanford, N.C.) tight end/defensive lineman Dennis Godfrey, Forestviille (MD) 4-star offensive tackle Antonio Logan-El, Wakefield (Raleigh, N.C.) 3-star defensive tackle Gavin Smith and Pemberton (N.J.) 3-star defensive end Johnnie Troutman.

Virginia currently has 20 verbal commitments, with two - NT Asa Chapman and CB DeAndre Filer - likely destined for prep school. In fact, Filer has already confirmed that he will be heading to prep school for the 2006-2007 year while Chapman could still make it academically. Look for UVa to try and fill all 25 spots in this year's class.

Oakton's Keith Payne earned Associated Press all-group AAA first team and player of the year honors for his senior year performance. The 6-2, 230-pound standout rushed for 2,059 yards and 26 touchdowns in leading Oakton to a Division 6 state championship. He also had 10 receptions for 116 yards and two scores.

A decision could come any day for Westmont Hilltop (Johnstown, PA) athlete Brad Kanuch. Kanuch, a 6-0, 175-pound prospect who has been timed at 4.26 in the 40-yard dash, is considering Connecticut, Maryland, Penn State and Virginia. He has taken official visits to all except Penn State, where his brother currently plays football and his uncle is the defensive coordinator.

An excellent athlete, Kanuch is being recruited simply as an athlete by UVa.

Today's SabreMail is brought to you by Glenmore Country Club.

Glenmore Country Club, nestled near the Blue Ridge Mountains just outside Charlottesville, is one of the most beautiful places in the Commonwealth. Just ask Al Groh, who lives there. But you don't have to be a resident (or a football coach) to enjoy what Glenmore has to offer.

Become a corporate or non-resident member and enjoy golf on its 18-hole, par-72 championship course designed by architect John LaFoy. Treat your employees or clients to a round they won't forget. Or host a fundraising tournament there.

While you're at it, how about holding your next board meeting in the Pinnacle Room at Glenmore? Enjoy lunch and an afternoon round of golf. And make sure to tell them you found out about Glenmore because of TheSabre.com - that's why they sponsor us.

Please check out Glenmore's website to learn more.

Thank you for actively supporting the sponsors of TheSabre.com. Sponsorships are a critical component of our business and sponsors' success will permit us to continually improve our services to you, our community.

SabreMail Contest, Week #15 winner

Last week we asked this question: What's your New Year's Resolution?

The best entry was turned in by Hampton Nager (3 U Circle), who wins a free month of Sabre Edge.

My new years resolutions are meager, really...

Give to charity; take advice; lose a pound; find a twenty; tie an artery; unravel a paradox; split an atom; unify the Middle East; make an igloo; break a horse; reduce the deficit; increase the peace; dine family style, fight broadway style, and solve a groovy mystery scooby-doo style.

...that, and yell like hell for the 'Hoos!

No contest this week. Since this is my last SabreMail, it will be up to Kris to continue the contests or find a better way to slightly amuse some of you.

Post of the Week

Subject: 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, and Hooville was Busy,
Posted by: stubbyhoo on Sat Dec 24 2005 9:45:40 PM
Message: 'Twas the night before Christmas, and Hooville was busy,
Al Groh was recruiting and in quite a tizzy;
The jerseys were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that an OC and DC soon would be there;

The players were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of National Championships danced in their heads;
And Biscuit in his 'kerchief, and Al in his cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,

When out on The Lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my Lawn Room to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the luster of mid-day to objects below,
When, what was this that would surely make news,
But a blue and orange bus filled with great Hoos,

With a grand old driver, that no one could squelch,
I knew in a moment it must be George Welsh.
More rapid than eagles his players they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

"Now, Tiki! now, Rhonde! now, Thomas and Aaron!
On, Terry! on Chris! on, Patrick and Herman!
To the top of the rotunda! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"

As opponents did fall to those great Hoo teams,
When George mowed them down like a bottle of Jim Beam,
So up to the Rotunda those athletes they flew,
The bus full of great Hoos, and George Welsh too.

And then, in a moment, I heard every Hoo,
The pounding and jumping of each big shoe.
As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,
Down from the Rotunda George Welsh came with a bound.

Dressed in his orange and blue, from foot to his head,
And then he flung off his cap right onto my bed;
A bundle of recruits he had packed in his bus,
And they had all just come from the White Spot and eaten a Gus.

His eyes -- how they twinkled! his nose slightly big!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a giant fig!
His sharp football mind that none could surpass,
And his game day acumen could always kick ass;

The tattered playbook that he held in his hand,
Held the secrets of victories cherished 'cross the land;
He had a great smile and dry little wit,
And he had Hoo spirit that just wouldn't quit.

He was smart and efficient and had just what we needed,
So that Hokies and Seminoles would all be defeated;
With a wink of his eye and a pick of his nose,
I knew that he would end all of our football woes;

He did it for love, and never for the cash,
And filled all our coaching and player needs in a flash,
And laying his finger inside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the Rotunda he rose;

He sprang to his bus, to his team gave a yell,
And away they all drove like a bat out of hell.
But I heard him exclaim, as he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all Hoos, and to all a good-night."

'Hoos facing Gophers today in Music City Bowl

Image: Virginia CavaliersWake up! If you're in Nashville, it's time to start tailgating. Even if you're not, head to the kitchen, pop a brew and put in that old Dolly Parton CD. With a noon kickoff (11 a.m. Central time), there's not much time to get in the right frame of mind for the Music City Bowl. The Cavs conclude their season today against Minnesota and will be trying to salvage a winning season.

  • Music City Bowl Blog: Nashville Ain't Hooville, John Galinsky

    Image: Virginia CavaliersNASHVILLE - I first sensed that Nashville hadn't caught Music City Bowl fever on the ride to my hotel last night. When I told the cabbie I was here for the bowl game, he said, "What bowl game?" Walking through downtown this afternoon, I knew what he meant. I saw a grand total of seven people wearing UVa gear and only a handful of Minnesota fans. For Nashville residents, this event barely registers on the radar. The question is how much the game means to each of the participating programs and their fan bases.

  • Cavs Shake Off Pesky Retrievers, TheSabre.com

    Image: Coach Dave LeitaoVirginia's second straight game with an opponent from Maryland didn't follow the same script as last week's 98-59 romp against Loyola, but the result reads the same: UVa wins. It wasn't easy against UMBC - thanks in large part to the Retrievers' ability to hit 3-pointers - but rest assured, Dave Leitao and company were happy to leave the ALLTEL Pavilion at the Siegel Center in Richmond with the 77-66 victory.

  • Loyola-UVa Photo Gallery, Mike Ingalls

    Image: UVa-Loyola Photo GalleryCheck out our exclusive photo gallery from Virginia's impressive 98-59 victory over Loyola last Friday. There are 82 pictures of all the action, including big plays by J.R. Reynolds (25 points), Adrian Joseph (24 points) and Jason Cain (15 points, 16 rebounds). There are also vivid shots of Laurynas Mikalauskas's dunk (and subsequent technical for hanging on the rim) and Mike Forkin's first career basket.

  • Game Preview: Music City Bowl, Greg Waters

    Image: Minnesota Golden GophersFor Virginia fans longing for the days of a dominating, power-running game led by the likes of Elton Brown and Zac Yarbrough, you're in luck because that's what you can expect to see Friday in Nashville at the Music City Bowl. Oh, you thought I was talking about the Cavaliers? I meant the dominating, power-running game of the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

  • Nick's Keys to the Game: Music City Bowl, Nick Sauer

    Image: Kai ParhamMinnesota's powerful offense presents an extremely challenging matchup for Virginia in the Music City Bowl. What do the 'Hoos need to do to escape Nashville with a win? On offense, they need to control the ball, use play-action effectively and avoid turnovers. Defensively, Kai Parham and company must crowd the box, get off to a good start and avoid playing it by the book.

  • Total Team Effort Spurs Blowout, John Galinsky

    Image: J.R. ReynoldsSo maybe Virginia isn't a one-man team, after all. The Cavaliers, carried by Sean Singletary all season, put together a complete performance in tonight's 98-59 whipping of Loyola (Md.) at University Hall. UVa (4-4) snapped a three-game losing streak, while J.R. Reynolds and Adrian Joseph broke out of their shooting slumps in a big way as five Cavs scored in double figures. Singletary, hampered by foul trouble, wasn't one of them.

  • AP Report #11: Alvin Pearman Rookie Diary, TheSabre.com

    Image: Alvin PearmanI haven't had much time for Christmas shopping. Tuesday was my big shopping day. I have one brother (who you all know) and three sisters, my mom, dad and grandparents to buy for. If I could send Coach Groh something, I'd send him an awesome offensive and defensive coordinator. I'm so happy for Ron Prince, Al Golden and Danny Rocco. From my first year, I knew it was only a matter of time before all of those guys would have head coaching jobs.
