3) A dose of good health, then a bag of common sense (Al Morris)
4) The Virginia Tech lunchbox (Danhoo)

10) World peace, a 7-foot center and good sushi at Scott Stadium (AustinHoo)

Now this week's contest...

What's your New Year's Resolution?

Make sure it applies to either UVa sports and/or TheSabre.com. And, no, please don't resolve to spend less time on the message boards in 2006. We can't condone that kind of behavior.

Please send your entry to [email protected] with the header: SabreMail Contest. Thanks, and good luck!

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Football recruiting.

Due to the de-commitment of Egg Harbor Township (Egg Harbor, N.J.) wide receiver/safety Cedric Jeffries, Virginia now has 20 verbal commitments for the 2006 class. Jeffries, a 6-1, 185-pound prospect who was rated a 3-star by Rivals.com, committed to Virginia this summer before changing his mind and committing to Penn State this week. He made an unofficial visit to Penn State several months ago and then went back for an official visit this month. Sources say the UVa coaches would have pulled the offer had Jeffries, who was wavering at the time, not solidified his stance with the 'Hoos.

Virginia's most recent commitment was from Indian River (Chesapeake, VA) standout cornerback DeAndre Filer. Filer, a 5-10, 175-pound prospect, will attend prep school before arriving at UVa.

Heading into the weekend, it appears the only prospect close to a decision is Westmont Hilltop (Johnstown, PA) athlete Brad Kanuch. In speaking with Kanuch's mother last night, it appears the 6-0, 175-pound speedster will discuss the decision with his family next week and make a decision. The finalists are Connecticut, Maryland, Penn State and Virginia.

O.C. Wardlow

Last weekend, several UVa commitments participated in the North Carolina/South Carolina Shrine Bowl. Mount Tabor High School (Winston-Salem, N.C.) quarterback O.C. Wardlow completed 5 of 8 passes for 59 yards and a touchdown in North Carolina's 28-24 victory.

According to sources, Vance (Charlotte, N.C.) defensive back Rico Bell looked good during the Shrine Bowl practices, while it was evident that West Iredell (Statesville, N.C.) wide receiver Chris Dalton, who looked fast, needs to bulk up significantly before he will be able to contribute at UVa.

At least one new target emerged from the Shrine Bowl - tight end/defensive lineman Dennis Godfrey. Godfrey, a 6-3, 240-pound standout for Lee County (Sanford, N.C.), has received or will likely receive offers from Clemson, East Carolina, North Carolina, N.C. State, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia and Virginia Tech. A Wake Forest verbal commitment, Godfrey has decided to take several official visits to make sure about his choice. He is scheduled to go to Clemson on January 13th, Virginia on January 20th and Wake Forest on January 27th.

According to Godfrey, UVa is recruiting him as a tight end.

Basketball recruiting fans, be sure to check out the latest Sabre Edge article: Leitao Off to a Good Start with 2006 Class. PrepStars.com Talent Evaluator Brick Oettinger and Scout.com National Recruiting Analyst Dave Telep analyze the 2006 signees, the commitments, how UVa measures up to other ACC schools and how Coach Leitao will do at UVa.

Here is a sample.

Initial impression of UVa's recruiting class.

Brick Oettinger: They are all good players and they all will help for the future. I think it will help immediately. There's plenty of room to go. Some of the guys they have now may have trouble staying ahead of the guys they have coming in. Will Harris, Tat if he comes and Tucker - all these guys can play.

Dave Telep: I think they did a nice job. It's important to understand with Virginia that this is a rebuilding situation. There is no doubt about that. That is not something that you can fix in one year and roll on from there.

Today's SabreMail is brought to you by TransDigital.

We're proud to introduce a new sponsor that can really help you and/or your business operate more efficiently. The company is called TransDigital Document Services, and what they do is take a customer's existing paper-based filing system and make it much more accessible by converting the paper to digital images.

For you and your business, that can make a huge difference for many reasons. By improving customer service. By reducing costs. By streamlining workflow, saving space and saving time.

Once TransDigital is done with the conversion, you'll be able to search files in seconds. You'll have the ability to search for specific words on pages that would normally take weeks to read. That allows you to save time and money researching case files, compliance documents and medical records, among other things.

So please check out TransDigital's website and if you end up using their services, please tell them you learned about TransDigital at TheSabre.com. That's why they're sponsoring us!

'Hoos preparing for the Music City

Image: Virginia CavaliersCoach Groh is singing a happy tune as his team gets ready for the Dec. 30 Music City Bowl in Nashville. Even though he's working without both of his coordinators...even though Ahmad Brooks and Tony Franklin won't play in the game...even though Minnesota has the nation's #2 running game...and even though a loss would mean a three-game losing streak and a 6-6 record, Groh said, "I'm having more fun than I've had in a long time."

Minter's departure cuts into Cavs' depth

Image: Donte MinterThe men's basketball team didn't have much depth to begin with. Then freshman center Sam Warren left the program in the preseason, followed this week by junior forward Donte Minter, who is likely to transfer for "personal reasons." Sure, Minter's departure is not a surprise, nor is it a big loss considering knee problems had kept him off the court all season. But with just eight scholarship players left on the roster, including injured guard T.J. Bannister, the question isn't how many games the Cavs will win. It's whether they'll have enough healthy bodies to survive the season.

Sabre articles from the past week

  • Groh Doing it All on Defense, John Galinsky

Image: Al GrohHow are the Cavaliers preparing for the Music City Bowl without either of their coordinators? Well, not surprisingly, Al Groh has heaped more of the workload on himself. With a smile on his face today, he referred to himself as the team's new defensive coordinator, linebackers coach and defensive backs coach. He'll make the defensive calls in the bowl game. "Not by genius, but by default," he joked.

  • Minter No Longer a Cavalier, John Galinsky

Image: Donte MinterDivision I-A college basketball teams are allowed to have 13 players on scholarship. Virginia is now down to eight with today's announcement that Donte Minter is no longer on the team for "personal reasons." The move comes as little surprise considering the junior forward had not played all season, but it leaves the Cavaliers even smaller and thinner in the frontcourt.

  • Sabre Roundtable: You're the Coach!, TheSabre.com

Image: Virginia CavaliersImagine this: Al Groh has resigned and, due to a terrible lapse in judgment, Craig Littlepage has named you UVa head football coach for the next five years. It's your program. What will you do? Where will you focus your recruiting efforts? What kind of assistants will you try to hire? What are your media policies? What schemes, systems and philosophies will you implement? How will you spend your time?

  • FanWatch: Darren Yowell (hoomanchew), TheSabre.com

Image: Darren Yowell (Hoomanchew)In this third installment of FanWatch, let us introduce you to Darren Yowell. Well, if you read the message boards, you probably already know him as hoomanchew, among the most enthusiastic and passionate posters on the Sabre, not to mention one of the most prolific (over 5,000 posts!). He's also one of the original members of the legendary "Wilk Hall" tailgate.

  • Cavalier Call-In Highlights: 12/19/05, John Galinsky

Image: Coach Dave LeitaoOn his Cavalier Call-In radio show tonight, Dave Leitao talked with host Mac McDonald about last Saturday's loss at Gonzaga and Friday's upcoming home game against Loyola. They also discussed Sean Singletary's performance against the Zags, the team's schedule during winter break and Laurynas Mikalauskas's defense. Leitao took questions from fans about making UVa "a force to be reckoned with" and about the team's scholarship situation next year.

  • The Sabre's Guide to Nashville, Rob Mahini (Vandy-Hoo)

Ah, Nashvegas! I spent a few good years of my life making a ruckus as a Vandy grad. While I didn't learn too much in class, I did learn a good bit about the campus and the town. The Music City is a great place to visit, so Wahoos should feel blessed about their bowl game destination. Book those tickets and go west, young 'Hoos! (You old ones, too).

  • Singletary Sensational in Loss to Zags, John Galinsky

Image: Sean SingletarySean Singletary outshined the nation's leading scorer, but Gonzaga's overall depth and talent ultimately proved too much for Virginia on Saturday night in Spokane, Washington. Despite a career-high 35 points from their sophomore point guard, the Cavaliers couldn't quite pull off the upset of the #10 Zags and dropped their third straight game.
