SabreMail Contest, Week #14 Last week's contest: Write a country music lyric to describe life as a UVa fan. In honor of the Music City Bowl, we wanted entries that would make Dolly Parton proud. Most, I'm afraid, would make her cry. (Are Wahoos just not country enough?) But there were some good ones too. The winner is Brandon Arnett (chiefwahoo), who earns a free month of Sabre Edge for this entry, sung to the tune of Willie Nelson's "On the Road Again."
Just can't wait to get on the road again The life I love is following the Wahoos with my friends And I can't wait to get on the road again On the road again Goin' places that I've never been Losing games by scores I hope we never see again (7-5!) But I still can't wait to get on the road again We can sing that one on the way to Nashville. Now this week's contest... Ask Santa for one thing to give the Cavaliers. As a UVa fan, what's #1 on your wish list? Santa can bestow one gift on the 'Hoos. What should it be, and why? If we get enough good entries, we'll run a top-10 list next week. Please send your entry to [email protected] with the header: SabreMail Contest. Thanks, and good luck!

Recruiting News | |||||
This Week In Recruiting By Chris Horne Football recruiting. Kenny Britt, Bruce Campbell and James Nixon all enjoyed their official visits to the University of Virginia last weekend. Britt, a 6-4, 185-pound wide receiver out of Bayonne (N.J.), was hosted by fellow New Jersey native Mike Brown and was impressed by the players and coaches. Virginia is in good position with Britt, who will go to Rutgers this weekend for an official visit. Bayonne head coach Frank Blunda does not expect his star to make a decision until January. Virginia put itself back in heavy contention for Campbell and Nixon, who are teammates at Hyde Leadership Academy in New Haven, Connecticut. The 6-7, 265-pound Campbell, a 4-star prospect who is being recruited to play either offensive tackle or defensive end by Virginia, rated his experience a 9 on a scale of 1 to 10. He claims no favorites among Maryland, Michigan State, Nebraska and Virginia, but this was key for the 'Hoos to bounce back in the wake of Mark D'Onofrio's departure. D'Onofrio was the primary recruiter for all three players. According to sources, Nixon, a 6-0, 175-pound cornerback recruit with exceptional speed, had a great time on his first-ever visit to Charlottesville. James will take officials to Rutgers (this weekend), Maryland and Connecticut before likely coming to a decision. He may not make all five official visits.
Last Friday, Indian River (Chesapeake, VA) defensive back DeAndre Filer gave his verbal commitment to UVa. Filer, who was rumored to have committed on his official visit to Virginia on the weekend of December 2nd, will go to prep school before enrolling at UVa. At 5-10 and 175 pounds, Filer is being recruited by UVa as a cornerback. He impressed the Virginia staff this summer when he had a stellar performance during UVa's camp. This season he made six interceptions from the cornerback spot.
It wasn't all good news this week, as Conestoga (Wayne, PA) linebacker Mark Herzlich de-committed from Virginia and committed to ACC rival Boston College. Herzlich, who had been having second thoughts for several months, made an official visit to Boston College last weekend and decided to commit.
A recruiting dead period takes place beginning December 19th and lasts through January 1st. The definition of a dead period, as defined by the NCAA, is a period where it is "not permissible to make in-person recruiting contacts or evaluations on- or off-campus or permit official or unofficial visits."

Sabre articles from the past week
It's been a hectic December for Al Groh. Four of his assistants, including both coordinators, left for other jobs at the start of the month. Recruiting has been hot and heavy. Bowl preparations are underway. "We have a lot of balls up in the air at the same time," he said today, addressing those subjects and many others in an informal discussion with reporters. Groh also talked about the status of Tony Franklin, Ahmad Brooks, Kai Parham, Michael Johnson, Keenan Carter and Chris Cook.
Unfortunately, the 2005 season may be remembered more for what happened off the field than on. Coaching changes, injuries, Al Groh's media travails and multiple player suspensions almost overshadowed the games, many of which were disappointing anyway. Still, some players, like Connor Hughes, had great seasons, and there were a number of positive developments. Here's my opinion on some of the highs and lows of the 2005 season, both on and off the field.
On his Cavalier Call-In radio show Monday night, Dave Leitao talked with host Mac McDonald about the loss to Fordham, the exam break, next Saturday's game at Gonzaga and the status of Sean Singletary's hip injury. He also took questions from fans about developing a killer instinct, getting his players to play passionate basketball, emphasizing things like diving for loose balls, J.R. Reynolds' subpar play and the health of T.J. Bannister.
Early in the year everyone kept telling me about how long the season is and I was concerned how my body would hold up. I think I've done pretty well. It's a lot different than college. I'd be sore after college games because I was getting 25-30 touches, but now I'm going on all the third-down situations and returning punts so I'm only getting about 7-8 touches per game. So I'm feeling stronger. This is a point of the season where taking care of your body throughout the season pays dividends.
