SabreMail Contest, Week #12 Last week's contest: What prank should we pull on Virginia Tech next year? Since some cheeky Hokies snuck into Scott Stadium and painted a big "T" next to the "V" at midfield before the big game two weeks ago, it's only fair to start planning payback. We asked for ideas for appropriate pranks before next year's game in Blacksburg. One of the best ideas was strewing plucked turkey feathers all over Lane Stadium. Several of you also suggested stealing - um, borrowing - the lunchbox that one Hokie carries around all year. As a symbol of the team's working-class mentality, the Virginia Tech lunchbox is a swell target for a clever Cavalier prank. So the winning entry comes from Robert Keller (GoHoos1113) for his top 10 suggestions for what to do with the lunchbox once it's swiped. 10) Bury it near Lane Stadium and leave them clues to its exact location. Of course, take them on a whirlwind tractor tour of the state before revealing that it was right where they started. 9) Mail it to Mark Warner. 8) Transfer a compromising Photoshop image of Beamer's wife to the lunchbox. (Cause you know how dem Hokies love Photoshop!) 7) Place the lunchbox in the middle of a pile of duplicate lunchboxes, each filled with turkey droppings. 6) Fill it with cheese dip. 5) Paint it pink and put "Strawberry Shortcake" stickers on it. (A couple of love notes inside from a third grader wouldn't hurt either!) 4) Send them a ransom note and demand payment of a full set of teeth. 3) Two words - Krazy Glue! 2) Send them Polaroids of the lunchbox on vacation with a yard gnome. And finally, 1) Place diplomas inside the lunchbox for all of the football players currently enrolled in the Apparel, Housing and Resources Management program - written in Crayon! Of course, if none of these work, you could always give the lunchbox subsidized housing at Tech...
Well done, Robert. You win a free month of Sabre Edge. Now to this week's contest: Name a funny replacement for Danny Rocco. Rocco, UVa's associate head coach, is leaving to become Liberty's head football coach. So who would be the most inappropriate, poorly qualified, ridiculous candidate to become Al Groh's right-hand man, and why? Please send your entry to [email protected] with the header: SabreMail Contest. Thanks, and good luck!

This Week In Recruiting By Chris Horne Football recruiting. This weekend will be a big one on the football recruiting front as the 'Hoos expect to host a handful of prospects on official visits. The current list of uncommitted official visitors looks like this, with several more being possibilities.
Vance (Charlotte, N.C.) DB Rico Bell
Kenny Britt, a 6-4, 185-pound wide receiver out of Bayonne, was trying to set his official visit to Virginia for this weekend as well. We'll continue to try and confirm whether or not Kenny will be in Charlottesville this weekend. In addition to the uncommitted prospects, don't be surprised if several committed recruits take official visits as well. Stay tuned, as TheSabre.com will provide full coverage of these prospects following their visits.
Two Pennsylvania prospects might be closing in on decisions. Malvern Prep (PA) DB Trey Womack and Westmont Hilltop (Johnstown, PA) ATH Brad Kanuch could make commitments in the next few weeks. Virginia is in great shape with Womack and good shape with Kanuch. Kanuch is making an official visit to Maryland this weekend and his decision will come down to the ACC rivals. John Graves hopes to make his decision before Christmas as well. He will take an official to UVa this weekend and then plans to head to Virginia Tech next weekend. This decision will come down to the two in-state programs.
Commitment update. 6-4, 235-pound LB/TE recruit George Johnson will lead Glassboro into the NJSIAA South I championship game on Saturday. Glassboro is looking to finish the season undefeated. Currently, the team is 11-0.
Kordell Young's outstanding high school career came to an end on a good note, as West Deptford defeated Paulsboro 38-3 in the Thanksgiving rivalry game. On the year, the 5-8, 180-pound star rushed 151 times for 1,887 yards (12.5 YPC) and scored 33 total touchdowns. He had 21 rushing scores on the year. Young had three rushing touchdowns (38, 39, 13) and returned a kickoff 89 yards for another score in the win over Paulsboro.

News, Notes and Fan Discussion | |||||
Regular season ends with loss at Miami The Cavaliers finished the 2005 regular season with a respectable 25-17 loss at Miami and ended up with a winning record, so why do most fans not feel good about the season? Given the schedule, a 6-5 record qualifies as a mild disappointment. Now fans are anxious about the team's bowl trip (probably the Emerald Bowl in San Francisco) and the possibility of losing several assistants to head coaching jobs. (Stay tuned.) Singletary, Cavs bounce back from Arizona loss How did the men's basketball team lose to Arizona by 30 points last Sunday, then beat Northwestern by 15 three days later in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge? There were many reasons, but Sean Singletary's stats were a good indication. Singletary scored 24 points in the first game and 23 in the second, but it was his floor game that provided the major contrast. Against Arizona, he had nine turnovers and no assists. Against Northwestern, he had no turnovers and three assists. To read more, check out the stories below. Free basketball articles... Sabre Edge basketball articles... Around the Wahoo sports world...

For the ACC, long the top conference in the country, this year probably will mark a step down in overall talent, but that was almost inevitable given player attrition. Still, there are some returning stars and plenty of freshman phenoms, so the ACC will still manage to be one of the nation's top conferences. Here's one man's guess to how things will pan out in the conference during Dave Leitao's first year at UVa...
Before the season, I pinpointed five things that I thought were necessary for Virginia to have a successful year. I felt they needed to stay healthy, be more aggressive, find ways to change games, win special teams and play angry. What went right and what did not? Now that the regular season is over, let's take a look at how those keys panned out and give a few grades.
Last night's game proved what we already knew - Sean Singletary isn't just Virginia's MVP, he's its MIP. Most Important Player. Most Indispensable Player. Most Irreplaceable Player. When he was on the court, UVa outscored Northwestern by 26 points. When he sat on the bench, the Wildcats were 11 points better. That was no coincidence. Singletary will be the driving force for the Wahoos, provided - cross our fingers, knock on wood - he stays healthy and out of foul trouble.
Virginia may have been picked to finish last in the ACC, but the Cavaliers represented the conference well tonight. With dominant perimeter play and superior speed, the Wahoos whipped Northwestern, 72-57, in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge at University Hall. UVa's victory helped the ACC win the Challenge for the seventh straight year, this time by a 6-5 margin.
It wasn't a bad effort, but it was a loss. So what do the members of the Sabre Roundtable have to say about the 25-17 defeat at Miami and the end of a 6-5 regular season? Nick Sauer and John Galinsky join "Best Seat in the House" host Jed Williams and Sabre Edge subscriber Dan Waddell (SteelCav) in discussing the positives and negatives of the Miami game and how it affected their view of UVa's season. They also offer predictions on the ACC championship game.
Virginia wasn't among the top teams in the conference this season, but four Cavaliers were among the best at their respective positions. D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Kai Parham and Connor Hughes made the All-ACC first team, while Marcus Hamilton earned second-team honors in voting by the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association. Deyon Williams also earned honorable mention recognition.
Yes, my prediction was wrong, but with five minutes remaining in the third quarter and Miami leading just 15-10, you were wondering whether or not 'ole Greg called it right. This game reminded me of something my father used to say. "If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a Merry Christmas." Virtually every Miami score was a result of a mistake on special teams or when the 'Canes converted a long down-and-distance situation on a drive.
For about 17 minutes tonight, Virginia looked like it might repeat last year's upset of Arizona. The next 10 minutes ensured that wouldn't happen. During an awful stretch of basketball spanning both halves, the Cavaliers watched their six-point lead turn into a 22-point deficit as the #9 Wildcats surged to an 81-51 victory at the McKale Center in Tuscon. It was Dave Leitao's first loss in three games as UVa's head coach.
The effort was outstanding. The gameplan was sound. The play-calling was solid. And yet Virginia still lost today for the same reason it lost four other ACC games this season - it wasn't good enough. Ultimately, I think, that's how this team will be remembered. Not as major underachievers, but as a team that simply wasn't as good, for a variety of reasons, as many of us hoped or projected.
Virginia played with pride and regained some respect but couldn't quite pull out another signature victory to close a somewhat disappointing regular season. The Cavaliers battled #10 Miami from start to finish at the Orange Bowl, losing 25-17 despite tricking the Hurricanes early and outgaining them on the day.
