SabreMail Contest, Week #9

Last week's contest: What's your biggest pet peeve on game day?

Among the things UVa fans are peeved about: too many Hokie fans in the crowd during UVa-VT games; overbearing ushers, cops who blow their whistles in your ears; lousy concessions; restroom problems; kids in the parking lot throwing and kicking balls into cars. Mostly, though, you get peeved by your fellow fans. They're too quiet. They don't show up. They constantly criticize the coaches. They boo the players. They leave early. And the bane of everyone's existence - the fan who wants everyone to just please sit down.

The most evocative entry in this category belonged to Lars Nordin (vikinghoos), the first two-time winner of the SabreMail Contest. He gets another free month of Sabre Edge. If he keeps winning every month, he'll never pay for his subscription again.

The year was 2003 and the Wahoos were taking on Virginia Tech at Scott Stadium. Al Groh had reeled off some impressive recruiting classes and we could all see a bright future; the Hokies would serve as a significant measuring stick of our progress. When Wali Lundy ran in the final touchdown to firmly hammer the last nail in the Hokies' coffin, all Hoo fans should have been going nuts, and most of them were. However, I experienced three things that day that sum up everything that is wrong with some of our supposed "fans."

Right after kickoff, this high school-aged girl sitting in front of us got bored.yes bored if you can imagine that.and pulled out a deck of cards. She then proceeded to turn her back to the field and used her seat to play solitaire. I was speechless, but another Lundy screen pass brought me back to my senses and my group kept cheering loudly. Now, the lady in front of us but slightly to the left, who had constantly looked at our group with evil eyes, suddenly put cotton in her ears.I guess we were making too much noise. This same lady sat through every Good Ole Song and didn't make a peep all game.her husband was the same. With the notable exception of Solitaire Girl and Cotton Lady, the entire Stadium is raucous, and then it happens.that peeve of all peeves.the tap, tap, tap on your back.I ignore it.the tapping continues.I turn to face the source and am confronted with the worst thing that exists at Scott Stadium. You read about them in books, but to be face-to-face with a real live Plank Sitter is surreal; they are seldom seen in nature. In slo-mo, this perfectly healthy Plank Sitter says, "Coouulllddd yyoouu pplleeaassee ssiitt ddoowwnn."

I take my keys out, toss them to him and respond, "Plank Sitter, why don't you grab Solitaire Girl and Cotton Lady, take my car and drive home to watch the game on my big screen TV. Extra drinks are in the fridge in my garage. Lozenges can be found in the medicine cabinet in the kitchen if you lose your voice!" I turned around and continued yelling. At the end of the game, my keys were on the seat where the Plank Sitter had been sitting.

You go, vikinghoos! Thanks to everyone who entered. Now to this week's contest:..

What's your worst experience with an opposing fan (or fans)?

At home or on the road. In the stadium or in the parking lot. Tell me a good story about an unfortunate run-in with an opposing team's fan or fans.

Please send your entry to [email protected] with the header: SabreMail Contest. Thanks, and good luck!

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Football recruiting...

Image: Keith PayneVirginia's coaching staff landed commitment #17 when Keith Payne, a 6-2, 230-pound running back out of Oakton (Vienna, VA), verbally committed last Saturday. Payne was officially offered following UVa's win over Temple and immediately accepted.

Payne is rated the #20 overall prospect in the state and a 3-star prospect by TheSabre.com. He has helped Oakton to a 7-2 record this year, tallying 1,191 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Malvern Prep (Malvern, PA) defensive back Trey Womack had a great official visit to Virginia last week, putting the 'Hoos in very good position. Womack, who wants to decide by Christmas, is considering making official visits to Rutgers, Tennessee and West Virginia. Northwestern, Rutgers and Virginia are his only offers at this point.

This is a big weekend for UVa football recruiting, as Coach Groh and company will host Highland Springs LB Jarrell Miller, LB Matt Wrightand ATH Brad Kanuch on official visits. Miller is rated as the best defender in the state, while Phoebus star Wright has been a playmaker for Coach Dee for several ye

ars now. With linebacker being such a need, both are important recruits

Kanuch, a 6-0, 175-pound running back with 4.26 40 speed, is being recruited by UVa as an athlete with wide receiver or defensive back being the likely positions if he were to choose the 'Hoos. The Westmont Hilltop (Johnstown, PA) star says he likes UVa and Maryland a lot, but is really looking for the "it" feeling before he makes a final decision.

Commitment update.

Several Virginia commitments will begin the high school playoffs this evening. QB O.C. Wardlow will lead #5 seed Mount Tabor against #12 seed North Davidson in the opening round of the 4-A playoffs, while WR Chris Dalton will lead #11 West Iredell versus #6 North Iredell in the first round of the 3A playoffs. Both Wardlow and Dalton have been selected to compete in the NC/SC Shrine Bowl in December.

Basketball recruiting.

While Virginia leads right now, Brewster Academy (N.H.) small forward Will Harris may be leaning towards making a spring decision, Coach Jason Smith said. Harris took an official visit to UVa last Thursday and Friday and had a great time, but it appears he just may not be ready to make a decision right now.

How will suspensions affect Wahoos?

Image: Virginia CavaliersYesterday's news that four players (Tony Franklin, Kwakou Robinson, Ottowa Anderson and Vince Redd) have been suspended for an unspecified team rules violation sure doesn't come at a good time. The Cavaliers have three games remaining, all against ranked opponents, and must win one to become eligible for a bowl. How will the latest piece of adversity affect the 'Hoos? Will they be demoralized? Motivated? We'll find out tomorrow.

Sabre articles from the past week

  • Game Preview: #24 Georgia Tech at Virginia, Greg Waters

Image: Georgia Tech Yellow JacketsGeorgia Tech has not won in Charlottesville since that fateful November evening back in 1990. The voice of the Yellow Jackets, Wes Durham, says it's the "Scott Sisson Curse." Under Al Groh, Virginia has won three of four from the Jackets and has been able to produce against the Tech pressure. But this may be the most complete team coach Chan Gailey has ever fielded against the Cavaliers. Then again, Gailey brought a very good team into Charlottesville in 2001 and lost.

  • Cavs Suspend Four Players for GT Game, John Galinsky

Image: Ottowa AndersonTwo days before a critical game against Georgia Tech, UVa announced that four players will not participate in the contest due to an unspecified violation of team policy. Ottowa Anderson, Tony Franklin, Kwakou Robinson and Vince Redd will miss at least one game. UVa's two-sentence news release did not indicate the reasons for the disciplinary action or whether it might be longer than one game.

  • Nick's Keys to the Game: Georgia Tech, Nick Sauer

Image: Marcus HamiltonWhat does Virginia need to do to beat a very good 6-2 Georgia Tech team this Saturday? There are many keys. The Cavs must take advantage of GT's aggression on defense, protect Marques Hagans and be aggressive in the red zone. Defensively, UVa needs to stop P.J. Daniels, rattle Reggie Ball and see if Marcus Hamilton can contain Calvin Johnson.

  • Joe Gieck: Fond Farewell to a Cavalier Legend, Tom Baker (Old U Hoo)

Image: Joe GieckOn an ordinary day in 1962, a skinny guy from Altus, Oklahoma, arrived in Charlottesville driving a 56 Ford south from a temporary career detour in West Point, N.Y. Out of the car stepped Joe Gieck, and a legendary career with UVa Athletics was begun. Forty-three years later, it's coming to an end, so last Friday evening a crowd of several hundred people from all walks of life gathered in Memorial Gymnasium - where Joe had his first office - to pay tribute to someone William Faulkner might have had trouble describing.

  • Tuesday's News: 'I'm Living My Dream', John Galinsky

Image: Brennan SchmidtMidway through the second quarter last Saturday, Brennan Schmidt took a helmet to his right thigh and hobbled off the field with a deep bruise. On the next series, he was back in the game. Last year, when his shoulder kept popping out of place and despite often-excruciating pain, Schmidt never missed a game. The guy never misses a game. In fact, for the 48th straight time Saturday against Georgia Tech, the senior is expected to line up at defensive end, tying the school record for most career starts.

  • Sabre Roundtable: Post-Temple Talk, TheSabre.com

Image: Virginia CavaliersFor the rest of football season, we'll be convening a weekly Sabre Roundtable including three of our "experts" and one Sabre Edge subscriber. In this case, longtime fan (but infrequent poster) Hal Drumheller of Holly Springs, N.C., joins Nick Sauer, John Galinsky and Mike Ingalls in discussing the best and worst aspects of the Temple game and other topics related to Cavalier football.

  • Temple-UVa Photo Gallery, Mike Ingalls

Image: Temple PhotosCheck out our exclusive photo montage of Virginia's 51-3 win over Temple. There are 172 photos of all the game action, including some cool sequences of Wali Lundy's first touchdown run and Tony Franklin's big hit in the Temple backfield. There are also photos of fans and the halftime ceremony honoring Joe Gieck on a splendid day for UVa football.

  • Cavalier Call-In Highlights: 11/7/05, John Galinsky

Image: Al GrohOn his Cavalier Call-In radio show tonight, Al Groh talked with host Mac McDonald about the win over Temple and the upcoming game against Georgia Tech. He also took questions from fans about the leadership of Chris Long and Brennan Schmidt, the status of Vic Hall, the importance of crowd involvement, the excessive celebration penalty on Wali Lundy, the possibility of an early signing period, the improvement of the running game, and more.

  • Greg's Game Grades: Virginia 51, Temple 3, Greg Waters

Image: Chris LongWhile there were certainly areas that were not perfect, the Cavaliers played physical football, they were aggressive and they did what they needed to do - dominate an inferior opponent. Virginia outrushed the Owls, 262-10, and averaged 6.1 yards per play compared to Temple's 2.7. The defense, led by Chris Long, forced three turnovers, netted five sacks, held the Owls to a 22% third-down conversion rate and forced nine three (or less) and outs.

  • Owls are Foul: So, Should We Give a Hoot?, John Galinsky

Image: Jason SnellingAgainst an opponent as grossly incompetent as Temple, it doesn't serve much purpose to examine the final score or the stats. Those things are virtually meaningless because they only reflect how the Cavaliers played relative to the competition, and in this case the competition was a joke. Against the Owls, everyone looks good. To get a better gauge of UVa's performance, you have to dig a little deeper. What matters? What doesn't? I think the resurgence of the running game, led by Jason Snelling, bodes well for the rest of the season.

  • 'Hoos Trample Temple, 51-3, John Galinsky

Image: Wali LundyVirginia ran, defended, scored and dominated like it hasn't done all season. Then again, it was just another typical day for Temple. The Cavaliers smacked around one of college football's worst teams today, starting a three-game homestand with a 51-3 victory at Scott Stadium. Wali Lundy and Jason Snelling, both slowed most of the season, combined for 239 rushing yards and six touchdowns as UVa (5-3) moved a step closer toward bowl eligibility.
