SabreMail Contest, Week #8 Last week we asked you this question... What's the craziest thing you've ever done as a UVa fan? We received a bunch of entries, but the nuttiest one belongs to Ashley Reedinger (AshleyHoo05), who wins a free month of Sabre Edge for this story: The craziest thing I've ever done as a fan (and probably as a person, period) occurred during my third year at UVa. I had been reading the Sabre instead of studying, as usual, and I came upon the rumor that Derrick Byars was considering transferring. He was definitely my favorite basketball player (both to watch play and as a person) while I was a student, and I was extremely upset upon hearing this news. I immediately called my friend Erika and shared the news. She jokingly said to me, "We should send him a card, tell him how much we love him and to please stay!" I proceeded to up the ante with, "While we're at it, we should make a top 100 reasons we love Derrick list," which was followed by a mutual agreement that we should just go all out and make a scrapbook. So we did. The next day, Erika went to K-Mart to buy photo-printing paper and a scrapbook, and I conjured up every picture of Derrick from the Sabre Edge photo gallery and the Internet that I could get my hands on. I also stayed up late writing, "The Top 50 Reasons We Love Derrick Byars." Erika and I spent the next 72 hours straight completely blowing off class and schoolwork to work on our project. We spent several hours printing off all of the pictures and cutting out cutesy captions and décor from old programs, newspaper articles, etc. Thank goodness I'm such a packrat. We put about three reasons per page and covered the rest of each page with photographs and captions. We easily filled the entire book. Lastly, we wrote a heartfelt letter telling him how much we loved him and how sad we were that he was unhappy at UVa, but that we would be devastated if he were gone. After the project was complete, we were unsure how we should deliver it to him. We were concerned about coming off as completely psycho, so we opted to look his address up in the student phone book and leave it on his doorstep for him to find. We were able to later confirm that he received the scrapbook and appreciated the effort. Although we were unsuccessful in convincing him to stay, this project will go down as one of my favorite college memories and Derrick will always be one of my favorite UVa basketball players. I wish him the best at Vanderbilt. Well done, Ashley. Hope the restraining order isn't still in effect. Thanks to everyone who entered. (The top two runners-up are posted further down in SabreMail.) Now to this week's contest:.. What's your biggest pet peeve on game day? Overbearing ushers? Fans who ask you to sit down? Lousy concessions? Describe anything that often annoys, irritates or frustrates you when watching a game at Scott Stadium. Winner will be based partly on the ability to convey those emotions. So get peeved and tell me a good story. Please send your entry to [email protected] with the header: SabreMail Contest. Thanks, and good luck!

This Week In Recruiting By Chris Horne Football recruiting... Things continue to be relatively quiet on the recruiting trail, though Virginia will host one uncommitted official visitor this weekend. Trey Womack, a 6-1, 175-pound defensive back recruit out of Malvern Prep High School (PA), is making his second official visit in as many weeks. He traveled to Northwestern last weekend and will head to Charlottesville this weekend. Virginia, which was one of the first schools to offer, has been high on Womack's list for a long time. Trey has taken several unofficial visits to UVa and enjoyed both experiences. While he says he will probably take official visits to Rutgers and Tennessee, a great experience this weekend could change things. Womack, who plays wide receiver and defensive back, has helped Malvern to an 8-0 record this season. Malvern is primed to capture another private school league title.
Highland Springs standout linebacker Jarrell Miller, who may be the top remaining target for the 'Hoos, was officially named to the 2006 Army All-American team yesterday. Miller has taken an official visit to Tennessee and plans to take an unofficial visit to Virginia Tech this weekend. He is scheduled to visit Virginia next weekend, Florida on November 25th and UNC on December 2nd. He will likely take an official visit to Virginia Tech as well. Miller plans to announce his college decision at the Army All-American game.
Commitment update. George Johnson, Jr., has helped Glassboro (N.J.) to an undefeated record in 2005. A tight end and defensive end for head coach Herb Neilio, Johnson is averaging close to 30 yards per catch on offense and has totaled close to 40 tackles with seven sacks on defense. The 6-4, 235-pound linebacker recruit remains firm in his commitment to Virginia. He may take official visits to Penn State and/or Rutgers as well to make sure of his decision, but claims that he does not plan to go anywhere besides Virginia. Johnson is a big recruit for Virginia as he possesses the size and speed Coach Groh needs at linebacker.
Basketball recruiting. Virginia landed Ben C. Rain (Mobile, AL) 6-8, 225-pound power forward Johnnie Lett earlier this week. Despite only having three available spots in the 2006 class and having three commitments already, Virginia may not be finished just yet. Will Harris, a 6-6, 230-pound Brewster Academy standout, is currently on an official visit to Virginia. Stay tuned for further updates on how his visit goes and if Virginia will have its fourth verbal commitment. Lett is a nice pickup for the 'Hoos. He will bring defense and rebounding right away, two abilities Coach Leitao certainly covets. Lett was a finalist for 5A state player of the year last season. He averaged 18 points and 15 boards per game his junior year.

Post of the Week After an ugly loss to UNC and a bye week, and with Temple coming to town, the boards weren't exactly crackling with good football talk. So let's talk music...
Subject: What would you guys like to hear as our intro music?
I know it's a sort of lame topic but just thinking about it after watching a Tech entrance video posted on the ESPN board. To read the entire thread of music suggestions, please click the link below...
After long bye week, bring on Temple. Please. Are we all tired of dwelling on the North Carolina loss? Of course we are. That 7-5 debacle made the bye week seem like an eternity. Finally, we have another game to anticipate. Temple comes to Scott Stadium on Saturday, and a beatdown of the nation's worst Division I-A team should at least make us feel a little better going into the rough homestretch of the season. Of course, a close game may send the message boards into meltdown mode. Let's hope not! Please check out the Temple Game Page and free articles below to read more about the 'Hoos...

SabreMail Contest Runners-Up Craziest thing you've done as a UVa fan? Here are a few more entries...
In response to the allegations over Ronald Curry ultimately choosing UNC over us because of Nike gear, I decided to do a little Ronald Curry Nike fishing at the 2000 North Carolina game. I purchased a small child's fishing pole and brought with me an extra pair of Nike shoes. After carrying the extra pair of shoes into the stadium with no questions from the ticket takers or ushers, I attached them to the end the fishing pole which I had placed inside my pants and ran down my leg. Each time Ronald took the field, I yelled "free Nike's for Ronald Curry" and brought out the fishing pole. Surprisingly, the UNC fan behind me thought it was the funniest thing he had seen at a game. In what turned out to probably be one of my low points in sportsmanship, as the North Carolina players were leaving the field after another defeat to the 'Hoos, I went Ronald Curry fishing right above their exit from the field. As I hollered "Free Nikes for Ronald Curry" he walked under the pole and shoes, looking up at me and shaking his head.
I played a sousaphone while riding a bicycle on the field during a pep band halftime show. The sousaphone was orange and blue paisley, with this written on the bell - "This space for rent call 924-xxxx" which was the university president's home phone number. Needless to say, having smuggled in my fraternity brother's 12 flasks and an entire gallon of bourbon inside the sousaphone, I lost function during the second half. Some complete strangers walked, er, dragged me to my fraternity (it was all they knew about me). I lost my bike, only to find it two years later chained to the fourth floor balcony of a friend's apartment. He said it was there when he moved in.

Probably the worst thing the Virginia Cavaliers could do this week is look at Temple's national rankings among Division 1-A teams. They are a breeding ground for overconfidence. The Owls ranked in the bottom 10 (of 117 teams) in rushing offense, scoring offense, pass efficiency defense, total defense, scoring defense, net punting, punt returns and passing efficiency. With a lame-duck coach in Bobby Wallace, the Temple players have not quit but they have not been clamoring to "win one for the gipper" either.
As Virginia coach Al Groh says, November is when seasons are made. That's not necessarily true in the ongoing world of recruiting, but it is true that this month is key as far as UVa's 2006 class is concerned. Virginia will host a number of recruits on official visits during the month of November and the staff would certainly love to close the month with several commitments in the fold. Currently, Virginia has 16 verbal commitments, including speedy receiver Chris Dalton, in the 2006 class and will likely take 7-10 more if possible.
After an abysmal loss to UNC, let's take a look at what Virginia needs to do to get back on the right foot against a horrible Temple team this Saturday. The Owls don't pose much of a threat at 0-9, having been outscored 409-86 on the season, so these keys are mostly about what Virginia needs to accomplish going into the homestretch. One thing the 'Hoos need to prove is that they can run their offense without Marques Hagans running for his life.
Marques Hagans pronounced himself "110 percent." Ahmad Brooks, D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Wali Lundy are all getting healthier. Jermaine Dias is back at practice. At the same time, two key offensive players - the team's leading rusher and #2 receiver - are likely to miss the Temple game with sprained ankles, Virginia coach Al Groh said today. So are the Wahoos in good shape for a successful November stretch run, or not?
On his Cavalier Call-In radio show tonight, Al Groh talked with host Mac McDonald about the bye week and the upcoming game against Temple. He also took questions from fans about the emotions of the team and the play-calling against North Carolina, the health of Marques Hagans, the challenge of recruiting against Virginia Tech, and more.
When I was in Pittsburgh, Heath Miller's mom was in town the Saturday before the game. I went over to his place and hung out for a while and his mom made us some great southwest Virginia food. We had the opportunity to talk and I spent a good bit of time in the locker room with him after the game. Heath had a great game with four catches for 72 yards and a touchdown. It was so weird looking across the field and seeing my man Heath on the other team instead of on my team.
