SabreMail Contest, Week #1 Winner We instituted a weekly SabreMail contest last week and got a bunch of responses to our first challenge: Most Original Tailgating Recipe. It was hard to pick a winner, but John Hering gets the nod for his "Uncle Shrivey's Spam-Kebobs," named after his father (Shriver Hering). We said we'd base our judgment on originality and tastiness. I can't vouch for how tasty this is - frankly, I'm skeptical - but I love the name and John's exuberance. In his e-mail, he wrote, "I defy you to grill up some of Uncle Shrivey's Spam-Kebobs on your Hibachi at your next tailgate and not draw crowds of people clamoring to trade you cases of beer for one of these. Don't let the name fool you. These simple-to-make but delicious kebobs are a taste explosion and are perfect tailgate fare as they require no utensils, condiments or even napkins. Just grill and enjoy right from the stick." Uncle Shrivey's Spam-Kebobs (For best results do not substitute any of the below ingredients - e.g., the thicker teriyaki sauces do not work as well.) 3 cans of Original Spam
Soak wooden skewers in water for 2 or 3 hours (or overnight) so that they don't burn when you toss them on the grill. Cut the Spam into cubed-size pieces. I recommend making four cuts along the long edge, three cuts along the width, and two or three cuts along the depth which will create 72 or 98 cubes. Assemble skewers by starting with a piece of Spam, and then alternating onion, pineapple, and Spam until the stick is full. Usually 4 pieces of Spam, 3 pineapple cubes, and 3 pieces of onions. Place skewers in large Ziploc bag and pour entire bottle of marinade into bag. Throw bag into cooler and head off to the game! When it comes time to cook them, grill them for a couple of minutes on all four sides. Best enjoyed by chomping off a piece of each ingredient all at once and washed down with your favorite beer. YUM! (I think.) John wins a free month of Sabre Edge. There were many other worthy contenders. Runner-up honors go to Fred Harry for his recipe for "Shrimp Boil." Shrimp Boil 8 lbs shrimp
OK, I like any recipe that involves boiling food in beer. Anyway, let's move ahead to this week's contest: Please describe, in 500 words or less, your worst experience as a Wahoo fan. It could be anything. A particularly excruciating defeat. A bet you lost. Any moment where rooting for the Cavs caused you pain, embarrassment, heartbreak, etc. (Don't worry, we'll have a best experience contest later.) Please send your entry to [email protected] with the header: SabreMail Contest. Thanks, and good luck!

This Week In Recruiting By Chris Horne Football recruiting. We're working on getting an interview with top wide receiver recruit Chris Bell, who made his first official visit last weekend. Bell's visit was to the University of Florida. He did not make a verbal commitment to the Gators, a good sign for the 'Hoos. LSU, Nebraska and Penn State are the other programs at the top of the list for Bell, but Virginia is in good position at this point. Bell, a 6-3, 205-pound, 4-star recruit out of Granby (Norfolk, VA), is one of UVa's top targets and the top target on offense.
DL Jared Odrick made an official visit to Florida as well. Odrick, a 6-6, 290-pound, 4-star prospect out of Lebanon (PA), will make an official to Virginia Tech this weekend. Then he goes to Penn State in October and Georgia and Virginia in November. Virginia will be his final official visit. Stay tuned for news on Odrick, as we plan to catch up with him following this weekend. His visit to Florida went well, but Jared will be patient and plans to make all five visits before committing. He is being recruited by UVa as a defensive end.
Another major UVa target heading to Virginia Tech this weekend is Meadowbrook (Richmond, VA) OLB/DE recruit John Graves. The 6-3, 240-pound Graves was thinking about making a decision before his senior season, but has not yet committed. Virginia is in great shape now, but we'll find out if anything has changed after this weekend's unofficial visit. Basketball recruiting. While Virginia awaits a decision from 6-4, 175-pound North Crowley (Crowley, TX) standout guard Kelvin Lewis (who is deciding between Auburn and UVa), Coach Leitao and company will host two more 2006 class recruits this weekend: Jon Mitchell, a 4-star power forward, and 6-10 center Brad Sheehan. Both prospects are from New York. In addition to the 2006 guys, Virginia will host two top 2007 prospects - Penn Charter (Philadelphia, PA) point guard Sam Zeglinski and DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD) 5-star shooting guard Austin Freeman. Freeman, who has 15 offers, is not close to deciding, but Zeglinski may be.

Post of the Week A funny look at Sabre addiction. Of course, if he's suggesting I run for president, VetHoo is beyond help...
Subject: Top 10 signs that I'm hopelessly addicted to TheSabre.com
9. I hardly talk to my wife anymore 8. My entire conversation with my dear 95 year old grandma the other day was with me also reading the sabre edge board and only half paying attention to her 7. I am actually a more informed Virginia football fan 6. The lawn hasn't been mowed in weeks 5. I am consistently dodging responsibilities at work in order to get my fix 4. I now know what BTTTS means 3. John Galinsky - 2008 2. Many of my conversations with my friends and wife now begin much like "one time, at band camp"...."today, on the sabre message board...." 1. I am a hopelessly optimistic Virginia football, holding the task of gaining info on our team a much higher priority than work, keeping of the home, walking the dog, etc, and need to be a part of the largest support group around for this thing (I love you guys...sniff sniff...) Thread of the Week This post started a good discussion on the football board...
Subject: What has to happen Sat for the fan base to be satisfied?
All things considered, it seems like the fan base has been fairly even tempered about the whole thing. It is nice to say "a win is a win," if you are playing a respectable rival. But, none of the first three games should be that challenging. But again, to credit the fan base, people aren't going berzerk about this. I'll admit to being a bit concerned but currently reserving judgement. A weak showing against Duke would have me very worried. Is this the common belief? How much of a "big win" is necessary on Saturday for everyone to say, to quote Kevin Bacon from Animal House, "remain calm all is well"? Blue Devils come to C'Ville for homecoming game Two games into the football season, the best thing we can say about the Cavaliers is that they're 2-0. Fortunately, that's also the most important thing we can say. The outcomes are fine but the details have been unsettling. Shaky pass coverage and tackling. An inconsistent offense. Too many turnovers. The Wahoos may not be ready to handle a quality opponent, but for another week, they won't have to. Yay, Duke! Please check out the Game Page and free articles below to read more about the matchup...

Sabre articles from the past week
Virginia may be 2-0 this season, but it remains to be seen whether the Wahoos have what it takes to beat a quality opponent. After this week, we'll still be waiting. Duke is the worst team in the ACC and doesn't have the depth, talent or firepower to give the Cavaliers a major challenge. But who knows? UVa needed strong finishes to defeat Western Michigan and Syracuse and can't take anyone lightly. Not even the Blue Devils.
My first touch as a professional, just like in college, was on a special teams play. In the game against Seattle, the first time I touched the ball was actually on kickoff coverage when I forced a fumble and we recovered. The play happened right on our sideline and it was crazy. I looked up and saw we had recovered the ball. I got excited, the crowd was going crazy and the team and coaches were jumping up and down. It was a very good feeling. It's hard to put it into words; everything was happening so fast. It was kind of overwhelming.
There is no doubting that Duke is a little short on the talent side, but for whatever reason the Blue Devils have always been a thorn in the side of the Wahoos. Every year, I go in expecting an easy win, and usually I watch in stress and come away generally annoyed by the game. As far as keys to winning this game, they are much more about what Virginia needs to do (and not do) than they are about the threat that Duke poses. One of those is for Jermaine Dias and the linebackers to keep their assignments and cover the tight ends on play-action passes.
Ahmad Brooks isn't listed on the depth chart for Saturday's game against Duke and Al Groh wasn't "indulging any questions about Ahmad today." That's not good news. But in the absence of Brooks, another Cavalier linebacker has been playing like an All-American, and Groh was more than happy to discuss Kai Parham's contributions to the team. Groh also talked about Wali Lundy's status and other injuries (including his own), Keenan Carter, Chris Cook, D'Brickashaw Ferguson, the backup quarterbacks and the team's latest academic casualty.
On his Cavalier Call-In radio show tonight, Al Groh talked with host Mac McDonald about the Syracuse game, including the fourth-down decision on the final drive. He also took questions from fans about stopping play-action passes, when to blitz, whether it was realistic to win championships with UVa's academic standards, the personal foul call on Tony Franklin and when the Cavs will start using the shotgun.
The Cavaliers secured their second win of the season with a 27-24 triumph over Syracuse. Virginia played better, blocked better, tackled better and coached better than it did against Western Michigan. And while this week's grades show that some areas did improve, only two units came to the Carrier Dome with their "A" game, including Mark Miller and the linebacking corps.
At this point, it's all about survival. No Ahmad Brooks. No Wali Lundy. Let's face it, Virginia's just not a very good team without those guys. Once they return, that may change. But right now, we might as well be satisfied with ugly wins, because the Cavs don't have what it takes to dominate anybody. For now, that's fine. Of course, if the 'Hoos don't make major improvements over the course of the season, they don't stand a chance in the ACC. But there are reasons to think this team will get healthier and better as the weeks go by. And wouldn't that be a nice change from last year, when a dazzling start didn't mean much by November?
In a game full of mistakes and big plays, the guy who made the most of both - Marques Hagans - led #25 Virginia to a harrowing 27-24 victory over Syracuse. Hagans directed a drive that ate up the final 6:24 and ended with a 19-yard Connor Hughes field goal as time expired, allowing the Cavs to escape the Carrier Dome with a 2-0 record.
