Recruiting News | |||||
This Week In Recruiting By Chris Horne Virginia landed two more commitments this week - one from Raynard Horne, a 6-1½, 200-pound RB/DB out of Overlea High School (Baltimore, MD), and one from Cedric Jeffries, a 6-2, 185-pound WR/DB out of Egg Harbor Township (Egg Harbor, N.J.) Horne, who is being recruited to play running back but could get a look at safety, impressed the coaches during this summer's camp. It was then that he landed an offer from Virginia, which was the only program to offer at this point. Marshall, Maryland, Virginia Tech and West Virginia were showing interest as well. Jeffries chose Virginia over offers from Illinois, Maryland, Purdue, Rutgers, Vanderbilt and Wisconsin. A wide receiver and safety in high school, he is being recruited by Virginia as a wide receiver. Both Horne and Jeffries performed extremely well at this year's Nike camp at State College (PA). Horne ran a 4.46 in the 40, posted a 36-inch vertical leap and benched 185 pounds 22 times. Jeffries ran a 4.5 in the 40 and posted a 30-inch vertical. Jeffries has been rated a 3-star prospect by Rivals and Scout. Including the latest additions, Virginia has 14 commitments in the 2006 recruiting class. Expect the staff to try and use up the full 25 schollies. They could go over that number if a few players are forced to go to prep school.
John Graves, who is rated as TheSabre.com's #4 overall player in the state of Virginia, told TheSabre.com that he is considering making an early decision. The 6-3, 240-pound Meadowbrook (Richmond, VA) star defensive end is not certain what he will do, but is considering an early commitment. Virginia, Virginia Tech, Georgia, Florida (no offer) and Ohio State are the primary contenders at this point.

Groh signs five-year contract worth $1.7 million annually Al Groh got what he wanted: A new contract and a fat raise. In a press release today, UVa announced that Groh signed a five-year deal that will boost his total annual compensation to $1.7 million. Groh is entering the fifth season of his original seven-year contract worth $765,000 annually. He has compiled a record of 30-21 in four years, with three straight seasons of at least eight wins and a bowl berth. What do you think? Does he deserve it? Are you pleased? Skeptical? Say this for Al Groh: He runs a clean program. There hasn't been a whiff of scandal since he arrived 56 months ago. Most of his players (the ones who stick around) graduate. Few have gotten into trouble off the field. Football hasn't tarnished the university's image under his watch. If anything, it has enhanced it. Groh has represented UVa well. At the same time, there are questions about Groh's leadership style and the way he runs the program.
Al Groh, who normally forbids his assistants from talking to the media, is relaxing that policy during training camp. Ron Prince was available for an interview this morning for the first time since becoming offensive coordinator in 2003. I talked to him along with other media members about play-calling, Marques Hagans, D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Jason Snelling, offensive versatility, and much more.
On "Meet the Team Day," let's also make it "Meet the Fan Day." The latest subject of FanWatch is Art Halstead, a former UVa baseball player, a longtime member of TheSabre.com and a guy who knows how to enjoy himself on game day. You can find him making the rounds of pregame tailgates, then having a great time in Section 121. (But, shhh, don't tell the ushers.)
For the first time since Al Groh became Virginia's coach, he should have the depth and size he likes on the defensive line. The Cavs may go eight deep - three nose tackles and at least five ends - which would allow new defensive line coach Lavern Belin the luxury of rotating players and keeping them fresh. They all have the requisite bulk to take on blockers, a key to the 3-4 defense, but there are questions about their experience, pass-rushing ability and durability.
Like last year, Virginia will ease into the 2005 season with a soft September. The two home games against Western Michigan and Duke should be easy wins, but the trip to Syracuse is a potential stumbling block. Here are 10 things you should know about each opponent, including what's to like, what's not to like, some stellar stats and dubious distinctions, and the take of their play-by-play announcers.
Three years ago, with just a week remaining in fall camp, Al Groh lamented that he had "2½" offensive linemen. That is not the case this year. Even with the loss of All-American guard Elton Brown and three-year starting center Zac Yarbrough, the UVa offensive line may be deeper and more talented than it's ever been under Groh. The Cavaliers approach the 2005 season with five front-line players, all with starting experience, and a stable of talented youngsters, some of whom are entering their third year in the program.
With the temperature closer to a fall-like 80 degrees and the cadence and brass of the Cavalier Marching Band echoing in the background, Saturday evening's practice had that college football atmosphere. Add to that a 40-plus play scrimmage and it was an enjoyable evening of football. So after five hours of football Saturday, here's what we observed, overheard and learned. The passing game took center stage as the staff is still searching for a backup quarterback.
Up at 8 a.m. on a Saturday? That's not the Galinsky Way. But it was worth the early wakeup call to check out an eventful morning practice. Not a particularly sharp or energetic practice, mind you. More like hot, sweaty and sloppy. Marques Hagans was among many Cavaliers who needed IVs afterward as temperatures crept into the 90s. I needed a cold shower and a thermos of Gatorade before I could start this story, and all I did was watch.
