Unlike most people, George Welsh never relished the thought of leaving his job. He didn't look forward to having enough free time to pursue other interests, like golf or poker or mountain climbing. He hasn't taken up any new hobbies or discovered new passions since resigning as UVa's football coach in 2000. "I'm flunking retirement," he said this week.

George Welsh

For those who know George, that's no surprise. After all, for nearly 40 years, he already was doing what he loved most - coaching football. And not only did he love it, he was pretty darn good at it. That's why he'll be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame tomorrow in South Bend, Indiana.

There's no need to recite his list of accomplishments or discuss his legacy in this space. All of you are aware of what he did here for 19 years and what he meant to Cavalier football. (Not to mention his exploits as a player and coach at Navy.) Suffice to say it's a well-deserved honor.

What's interesting is that at the age of 71, he says he is interested in getting back into coaching next year as an assistant for an NFL or I-AA team. (The recruiting grind of I-A coaching isn't a good fit.) Why not? He works out every day and says he feels good again after wearing down toward the end of his UVa career. And there's no doubt he still has an incredible football mind. Just check out his work for us in "Ask the Experts," one of the most popular features on TheSabre.com.

So good luck with the job hunt, coach. Until then, we'll try to keep you busy. Hey, you may be flunking retirement, but we can still learn a lot from your success.

    Post of the Week

This post started a good discussion about Wali Lundy on the football message board...

Subject: Re Lundy: I am a bit surprised at the lack of excitement about
Posted by: 111Balz on Tue Aug 9 2005 10:43:52 AM

    Wali Lundy

Message: the kind of season he is likely to have. Linked in his bio with stats over his career. This is one of the top returning backs in the country and the ONLY reason why we are not talking about how he has/will rewrite every UVA tailback....is Alvin Pearman, one of our all time best Rb's as well.

I have also read a bunch of comments about Lundy's fumbling problem. Well, I have researched every single box score from last year and guess what...he lost two fumbles (Clemson and VPI) and fumbled one other time that we recovered (Maryland). That's in 187 touches. And dwarfed by 17 TDs many of them in the red zone where everyone goes after the ball.

If Al hadn't had the luxury of Alvin Pearman, Lundy might have shattered some records last year.

    Around the Wahoo sports world...

  • Virginia's training camp began a week ago and has been full of interesting developments. Ahmad Brooks has not practiced yet, while receivers Fontel Mines and Deyon Williams have been sidelined with injuries. Ottowa Anderson's return has provided a nice boost. The competition for starting spots is most intense at nose tackle, safety and receiver. And some of the true freshmen are making a good impression. For the full scoop, Edge subscribers can check out the stories below. If you're interested in joining Sabre Edge, please sign up here.

  • You want to watch the Cavaliers practice? Tomorrow is your last chance. There are two practices starting at 8:45 a.m. and 6:45 p.m. on the lower field behind the McCue Center, and both are open to the public. After that, all practices will be closed leading up to the season opener Sept. 3 vs. Western Michigan.

  • Even if you miss the practices, you can still visit with players and get autographs at Meet the Team Day. The annual event will be held Thursday, Aug. 18, from 3-5 p.m. at Scott Stadium.

Today's SabreMail is brought to you by Glenmore Country Club.

Glenmore Country Club, nestled near the Blue Ridge Mountains just outside Charlottesville, is one of the most beautiful places in the Commonwealth. Just ask Al Groh, who lives there. But you don't have to be a resident (or a football coach) to enjoy what Glenmore has to offer.

Become a corporate or non-resident member and enjoy golf on its 18-hole, par-72 championship course designed by architect John LaFoy. Treat your employees or clients to a round they won't forget. Or host a fundraising tournament there.

While you're at it, how about holding your next board meeting in the Pinnacle Room at Glenmore? Enjoy lunch and an afternoon round of golf. And make sure to tell them you found out about Glenmore because of TheSabre.com - that's why they sponsor us.

  • State of the Program, Part 4: The Special Teams, John Galinsky

Image: Connor HughesYou only have to attend one Virginia football practice to see how much time and attention Al Groh devotes to special teams. On Monday, for example, the Cavaliers spent 32 minutes of a two-hour, 21-minute practice working just on special teams play. That's two more minutes than they used for offense vs. defense scrimmage situations. Groh has emphasized special teams ever since he arrived at UVa, and that focus has paid off with solid to superb results in every phase of special teams but one. (Yeah, you know what that is.)

  • AP Report #3: Alvin Pearman Rookie Diary, TheSabre.com

Image: Alvin PearmanI've been getting repetitions with the kickoff, kickoff return, punt and punt return teams in various spots and that's what you hope for as a rookie - the opportunity to get in there and show the coaches what you can do. In the NFL, practice is much more important than the preseason games. That's where the decisions are made. Everybody's fighting for a job right now and I'm trying to fight as best I can. My main focus is to do whatever is asked of me to the best of my ability.

  • Cavalier Camping: Nick's Notebook, Nick Sauer

Image: Virginia CavaliersWhile attending the past few open practices, I was struck by the overall athleticism of the team, the enthusiasm on the field and the pace of the practices. I was encouraged by the passing game, the defensive line and the special teams. I was also impressed by what I saw from many of the true freshmen. But I was concerned by the secondary, the dropped balls, the Ahmad Brooks injury and the QB situation behind Marques Hagans.

  • CavCamp Blog: Let's Get Physical, John Galinsky

Image: Al GrohToday's practice was the wettest, longest, loudest and most physical one of training camp so far. With the players in full pads for the first time, there was more hitting and hollering than before - and that was just the coaching staff. Al Groh and his assistants aren't shy about offering criticism or praise, as they showed throughout the nearly three-hour practice. Their enthusiasm and energy livened up a damp afternoon that was highlighted by a rookie scrimmage and more developments regarding the receiving corps and nose tackle Ron Darden.

  • CavCamp Blog: Saluting General Groh, John Galinsky

Image: Al GrohIt's difficult to appreciate the organization and military precision of an Al Groh practice without attending one. Perhaps the best way to describe it is with a military-style breakdown of Monday night's practice, complete with observations and a few scattered opinions. But first, let's start with the news of the day - the biggest developments from training camp - including the non-participation of Fontel Mines and Deyon Williams, the Ahmad Brooks rehab report, the emergence of Ron Darden and two new scholarship players.

  • Cavalier Camping: Welcome Back, Ottowa, Greg Waters

Image: Ottowa AndersonWith several wide receivers now in their junior year and four newcomers, Ottowa Anderson is the dean of the unit as the lone senior at the position. After missing last season on academic suspension, Anderson hasn't taken long to make an impact, not only as a wideout, but in what has become his bread and butter, special teams. This report from Sunday's practice also includes items on the leadership of Marques Hagans and Wali Lundy, a battle between two freshmen linemen, an interesting snap-count drill, Mario Moore's absence, and much more.

  • CavCamp Blog: Is Ahmad OK?, John Galinsky

Image: Ahmad BrooksOf all 104 players at Virginia's first practice of training camp, the one drawing much of the attention of fans (and reporter-types) isn't even wearing a jersey. Ahmad Brooks spends much of the session in a compression shirt looking like he's training for the Tour de France, not for football season. He pedals furiously on a stationary bike, jogs lightly on the sideline and does some agility drills. He also moves around with a slight limp and chats with head trainer Ethan Saliba. Which makes me wonder: Should we be worried or not?
